Anyone having trouble with Windows 10 update?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 11:29 AM PDT

Is there any simple way to disable warning while changing file extensions on windows ?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 03:33 AM PDT

Is there any simple way to disable the warning - "Any way to disable the 'If you change a file name extension, the file might become unusable' dialog?" when changing file extensions on windows.

I know I am making the change, I know if it becomes corrupt then I will revert. The main problems come when I want to create new files with an extension, I have to create a .txt file using the context menu New > New Text Document and then rename the .txt file it creates to a file extension that I would want eg. ".md", ".xml" etc.

I understand the need of the prompt from the casual consumers, but I find it very annoying in my daily workflow. Or wherever I end up creating a new file of a particular filetype.

How secure is the Windows Credential Manager? (Note: This is a multi-part question.)

    Posted: 01 May 2021 01:35 PM PDT

On both my office and personal computers, I've seen that some of my tool/website credentials are stored in my local WCM, which I can access, modify, or even remove at will.

So, when implementing a tool that can (among many other things) update the credentials of tools or websites on my local machine, I came across a few bits of code that can programmatically access and/or modify the values stored in the WCM. Some of them are listed in this StackOverflow answer.

The one I found that worked especially well for my use case was this Java one by Dariusz Szczepaniak, which somehow works even on Windows 10!

    My question is a multi-part . . . -er:

    • If it is that easy to access the credentials stored in WCM—that too, in plain text—how secure is the Credential Manager, really?
    • Why does it still exist in the system in its current state?
    • Why am I able to access and/or modify the plain-text values stored in it so easily via some Java-native code?
    • Is this really a feature of Windows or a bug?
    • Is there something else in Windows, which is more secure than the WCM that I can use instead, or do I need to continue to encrypt the credentials in my program, before storing them in the WCM?

Is there a free application that allows me to add bookmarks to PDFs?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 07:39 PM PDT

As far as I can gather, Adobe Pro is what one needs for this, but that's ridiculously expensive.

All I want to do is simply add a few bookmarks to my PDFs for personal convenience.

I'm running Windows XP (yeah yeah, I know).

I already like using Sumatra PDF reader, so if I could continue using that (and just use another program to add bookmarks to my PDFs) that'd be cool beans.

I hope you are all doing well, best wishes.

    Licensing Q re: Windows 2019

    Posted: 01 May 2021 06:00 PM PDT

I'm part of procurement team managing a few VM-Ware servers with multiple virtual Windows 2019 VMs. We purchased multiple Win 2019 licenses, and they're in my VLSC (fine).

As we enter multiple years (1) Am I correct in assuming those licenses are "my companies" for good or is it obvious (but it really isnt) that I need to renew ever year; and (2) How can I tell when the support will run out? Is it in the license details section of the VLSC? or Should I have been purchasing an extra support subscription? Or is it included in the purchase in the Windows Licenses?

    Thank you very much.

My clean, simple desktop. 2 programs to change the taskbar look and size, 7+ taskbar tweaker and T clock redux. Also I don't use the start menu, I use powertoys run to find and launch programs and files, much faster and better looking. If you want me to make a tutorial to copy this, let me know.

Register digital licensed Windows on the account previously used for pirated Windows.

    Posted: 01 May 2021 05:56 AM PDT

Hi, I need help with my current situation: I am getting a new laptop which has pre-installed licensed Windows on it. My main Windows account has always been logged in and synced on the "lite version" of Windows (pirated). If I log in with that account on the new laptop, will the license be registered on that account? What will happen to my other PCs that have logged in with the account and will the license be active if I reinstall Windows with a media creation tool? Thanks!

    Windows 10 suspend specific window

    Posted: 01 May 2021 01:38 AM PDT

Is there a hotkey to suspend the currently selected window? It would be much easier to just press a hotkey with the window selected rather than having to navigate to the task manager > resource manager > look for the process > right click > suspend. And for resuming the process you'd have to do all of the mentioned steps again..

So does anyone know if there is a hotkey for that? Or if i can create a own hotkey like with the program "autohotkey"?

My current windows 10 build: 19042.928

Or is it only with certain keyboards that you can do it?

    Thanks
