    Looking for slight gaming/art laptop.

    Posted: 02 May 2021 05:38 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US. ~$850 or less in the United States. (Can go slightly higher)

Are you open to refurbs/used? ~Absolutely, I would honestly rather have used than new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? ~not looking for anything crazy, the 2-in-1 might be better for art though. Need good performance, and I need very good battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you? ~Kinda mild on this, I'm looking for something that's more thin cause of travel.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~13 or less

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. ~I use a lot of free softwares Simple games like Minecraft I would like to run okay. Something that can handle at least two programs open at one time.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? ~Mentioned before, games like Minecraft. Being able to use higher settings (legit any better than the bare minimum) and an FPS that's above 30 (I'm desperate) would be nice. I would like to be able to play more online games as well.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? ~the keyboard being backlit would be nice, touch screen is fine but I don't need it.

Gaming laptop NOT advertised as a gaming laptop.

    Posted: 03 May 2021 12:46 AM PDT

So, I wanna buy a laptop used for the games listed below which is NOT advertised as a gaming laptop. It shouldn't have the word "gaming" in its title, description or any photographs describing it. This is of the utmost importance. Don't question this, please.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

1 lakh Indian rupees, and in india.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, but of course brand new would be better.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality should be good, performance should meet the requirements of the games and software below, battery life should be at least 2 hours+.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not at all important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6 inches or above.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Yes, I do video editing and gaming. I use shotcut, discord, and obs studio.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Yes, I game. I play Cod: Modern warfare, fortnite, and Star Wars battlefront 2. I wanna play them at at least 30 FPS or above (I'm desperate) at medium graphics.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

It should have a HDMI port, two usb-c ports, headphone jack. A backlit keyboard would be pretty lit, but it's not required.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My requirements might be impossible to fulfill, but I do want to see my options. Thanks!

School, CAD and gaming laptop for £1500(UK)

    Posted: 03 May 2021 04:54 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Would like to keep it under £1500(UK) but this could be extended a bit
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Only very good ones
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life of at least 5 hours doing light documents and web browsing etc. Less than 20mm thick. Not going to fall apart. At least 60fps in AAA games at high settings 1080p for the next 4 years.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Less than 20mm thick and ideally less than 2kg.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14-16"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I've only got a few years left of school and I would like to go into engineering at uni so CAD performance is required. Idk what program I will use for CAD though.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
All games 1080p. Minecraft - Shaders, mods, 144fps, maybe RTX at 60fps. Shooters - 144fps, competitive or medium settings. Factory games(e.g. Satisfactory) - I would like to be able to maintain good fps with a very large world. AAA games - at least 60fps on high settings. I would like for these to be the fps that I would get after 4 years of game development, however in the most demanding future titles I'm open to turning some settings down.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I want it to be robust enough to survive in my backpack and for the keyboard+touchpad to be good enough to use for decent periods of time.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I was thinking a 6+ core cpu (ryzen or intel), and a gpu that's at least as good as a 3060 80W/2070 80W. The battery life is very important to me however, so please prioritise this.

    Posted: 03 May 2021 04:14 AM PDT

    this?

    Or

    HP Pavilion Gaming 15-dk0018nt (8UT66EA)

    Specs: 16 Gb ram, Gtx 1660ti, 60hz, Intel i7 9750h, FHD, 1TB HDD, 128 GB HDD

    Or

    this?. (1660ti max-q)

I know the first one is the best, but it's much more expensive than the others. Is it worth it? Or would others be enough for me?

Looking for Help on Choosing a Laptop for College

    Posted: 03 May 2021 04:10 AM PDT

Right now I'm between a 2020 Razer Blade 15 Base Model and a Thinkpad P1 Gen 3. I'm going into computer engineering so will be doing a good amount of coding and also CAD work, but want to have a computer capable of gaming on the side.

The Thinkpad is nice because they're built like tanks and Lenovo's long-term support for them is apparently pretty solid. My concern with it is that the Quadro T1000/2000 won't be able to keep up in some of the games I play, which I won't be doing too often anyways however it'd be nice to have something that can handle them whenever I do have the occasional minute of free time.

As for the Blade, I really want the 144 Hz display and the 2060 would make me confident that it can handle almost any game with at least med-high settings. What I'm getting hung up on is the alleged tendency for Blades to break quickly, which when factoring in Razer's reportedly bad customer support, I'm hesitant to pick it up.

The gamer in me is telling me to not pay more for a Thinkpad with comparatively worse specs, however, I also don't want the computer to break after a year of use. I'm not worried about these being able to handle any programs that I'd use for school, which is why I'm focusing on their ability to play games but obviously I'd like something that can do 3D modeling work as well as programming. I mainly just want a laptop that will last me throughout all four years of college, and these two seem like good picks.

    Which has a brighter screen? 13" 2015 MacBook Pro v 13.5" Surface Laptop 3/4

    Posted: 03 May 2021 03:56 AM PDT

I work a lot of direct sunlight, and my 2015 MacBook Pro is just about good enough for it - it defo could be brighter though. I'm looking to buy a new laptop this year and are torn between the 13.5" Surface Laptop 4 (when it's out) and the latest 13" MacBook Pro (whatever that is). Does anyone know how those two screen might compare? I'm drawn to the new Surface Laptop (more bang for my buck), but I'm worried, like with every Windows laptop I have used, that the screen just won't be bright enough.

    The Lenovo Yoga 9i("14"):

    • Intel Core i7-1185G7 (3,00-4,80GHz) (BNCH-11901b)
    • 14,0" UHD (4K) 3840x2160px Touch IPS 500nits LED LCD

    • M.2 PCIe SSD 1000GB

400€ Germany Laptop for children/home schooling

    Posted: 02 May 2021 11:11 PM PDT

Hello! Because my father thinks I know everything about anything that has something to do with computers and I do not want to admit that I am an impostor, I came here to ask you guys for help.

My little sister has just started with elementary school, but because of the virus, she has had only a few weeks with live attendance and mostly remote/online schooling. My father and his wife only have one computer, and it is a really old thing, so they decided to get another one specifically for the purpose of home schooling.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Edit: They told me they were able to spend up to 600€.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
2-in-1 is optional, performance needs to be just enough for office/surfing, probably no gaming at all. Battery life is not main issue.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Does not matter.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A

Help beat my current suggestion! Need a laptop for work + light gaming.

    Posted: 03 May 2021 02:24 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase:

    • 400$ max. USD, USA

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • Refurbs yes, used from a random seller, no. Obviously I'd prefer something new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • I'm on a shoestring budget so I know I can't expect too much. My basic requirements are that it fulfills its job (running work stuff + light gaming) and doesn't die within five years.
    • Battery life isn't important now, but it will be in a year or so if I hopefully start grad school.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Semi-important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • Large as possible within budget. I have to do some graphic design work for my job and it's difficult on a tiny monitor.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Zoom [required]
    • InDesign [required]
    • Photoshop [required]
    • Clip Studio Paint

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Overwatch, willing to play at lower graphics settings provided it doesn't lag.
    • Rimworld
    • Divinity Sins I and II
    • Dragon Age series

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Would love to have a monitor that's color correct for printing (like, actual printing of professional stuff at a printing press, not personal stuff at a home printer). I'm not interested in buying a Mac at this time, though, since I'd ideally like something that I can easily open up and upgrade.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • I mostly need this for work, but gaming is a plus! My PC died ages ago and my other laptop just can't keep up, which is an issue with a new job I'm starting.
    • My current suggestion is a slightly newer version of the laptop my partner has. His laptop lets me run Zoom and Rimworld (can't do overwatch, however) which basically fulfills my basic needs for a new computer. Help me find something better!

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Will be taking a CS course in a few months time so I'll mostly be doing programming and working with data. With that being said I don't think ill be doing any video editing.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm a console gamer, so I intend on playing games on my laptop such as Civilization, Football Manager and Minecraft lmao

    Laptop Purchase Confusions

    Posted: 02 May 2021 10:04 PM PDT

So recently I'm looking into buying a Ryzen 5000s cpu and Nvidia 3000s gpu laptop. So far I've really only found the 2021 omen 15 and the Legion 5 Pro.

The Legion 5 Pro doesn't seem to be starting their sale in America anytime soon.

Looking at the Omen 15, why is it that the 4800H version is sold out on the hp website while the 5000s series cpu Omen 15 have like 0 reviews with them?

As an extension question, do people generally purchase laptops online directly from the official website, or are bestBuy or other retailers more usual? Since the 5800H omen seems sold out according to the bestBuy website but is up for purchase on the ho website.

    Thanks!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      No budget limit

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
USB-C charging (not while gaming, but browsing, considering downvolting for this) Build quality is very important to me and 2x Ram slots + replaceable NVME SSD full length

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Don't want it too large like an Alienware M51, smaller than that

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14-15
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Photoshop, Gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Fallout 4, 1080p 60 FPS +, Witcher 3 med-ultra 1080p 60+ FPS
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
USB-C Charging while browsing web, Webcam on the laptop, not separate
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary
    • Prefer major manufacturers (asus, razer, etc), no huawei, xiaomi, xmg and such

Surface Book 3 vs (Xps + Ipad) ?? Engineering student need digital notetaking solution

    Posted: 03 May 2021 01:06 AM PDT

I currently own a Surface Pro 6, 1tb with 16 gb. Along with pen and keyboard, since a 2+ years or so.

It has problems regarding notetaking, specifically the pen cease to work and I have to reboot.

After swearing to Windows, Microsoft or whoever and sending the computer back to microsoft where they sent me a new one the problem seems to remain, so it may be the pen or the software idk.

So I decided to contact Amazon where I bought the laptop and they offered a refund.

    So I will now have:

    - 2000 or so euros

    - 1 surface pen, keyboard and charger

I want to change my solution, I am veeeery open to switch to linux definitely so I'm considering a dual solution:

    - Dell xps (15?) + ipad (idk which?) + ipad pen

    - Surface book 3 (3000 euro) but I already have the pen and maybe I can sell the keyboard for 50 bucks

WHAT I REALLY NEED IN ORDER:

    - Handwriting reliably! I don't want no hw/sw problems whatsoever (I use onenote and drawboard)

    - Storage 512 but I would prefer to stay in the 1tb sweeeet spot

    - Onedrive support so I will have to check for linux if that is even working fine

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE, I would love to hear some experienced users' opinion

Looking to buy/build cheap ($200-300) laptop for Mother's Day

    Posted: 02 May 2021 09:20 PM PDT

I've built several mid-high range gaming desktops before and am computer-competent, so I'm trying to get a laptop for my mother to last her another decade or so. It just needs to be a serviceable computer that will get an average of 2 hours of light use (emails, vids, video calls) per day.

Trying to get as cheap as I can get a functional laptop for my mother. I'd not like to pay more than $300.

New or used doesn't matter as long as it's not too old

It doesn't need to be powerful, just a basic and efficient computer for a few hours a day

Weight and slim factor are irrelevant, it won't move much

Anything between 15" and 17" is fine

The expectation is that it will be low budget, low performance. I'm tired of family and friends getting laptops for her when I know I can get her much better. Usually when you buy em from a retailer it comes so bogged down with loads of excessive software which usually stress the CPU over time from what I've seen. While I'd rather not have to, building one myself by getting the cheapest and effective parts isn't an issue for me

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Max $2000, but preferably ~$1200. Country: US
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Open to it, but would definitely prefer new
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance and build quality are most important
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I don't want something huge but I also dislike ultra thin laptops
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      12-14"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Not necessary, but being able to run games would be nice
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Fallout 4 is probably the biggest thing I'd want to play. I don't know much about FPS and all that
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I want a good keyboard, backlit if at all possible. More than anything I want something that will last a long time.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
