    Looking for a school&gaming laptop

    Looking for a school&gaming laptop

    Looking for a school&gaming laptop

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 01:27 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: <800 USD, would love one closer to 500 but I'm not expecting that.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good (or fair) battery life, I don't know that much about laptops so idk what else I would want.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight isn't a huge deal, less that 3.5lbs hopefully. Thin would be nice.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to run Minecraft, skyrim, and Genshin Impact mainly, maybe a few lighter games on occasion.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? It's not necessary but I kinda want it to be pink, nice keyboard.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. It's mainly gonna be for school so it's not a huge deal. Genshin is probably the only game I'm gonna really run, but if possible, I'd really like to run Skyrim and Minecraft as well. I mainly play on my PS4 but if I'm getting a laptop, might as well be able to do some gaming.

Best Laptop For Web Designer & Marketer traveling around?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 03:46 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I've been working on a old lenovo running linux mint, but there's lots of problem with it.

I can't work and use youtube at the same time because everything crashes.

It doesn't render colors properly, and as designer it's a huge problem (i have to double check with the phone the colors).

    Generally speaking, it's crap.

I'm now looking in investing in something modern and more efficient.

    Main needs are:

    • excellent battery duration (my current one doesn't last 1 hour unplugged)
    • Good graphic quality
    • Enough power to run more apps at the same time, and possibly good speed
    • Comfortable for travelling and resistant, 'cause i use to move a lot
    • possibly good audio/webcam quality, i would record stuff & screenshare a lot

I don't need a top gamma product, my budget is around $1k/1.5k

    Thanks in advance!

      Not to bulky.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 03:29 AM PDT

So guys I was planning to buy this laptop today from Amazon but it immediately got out of stock in a few hours. Does anyone of you know when it'll be restocked again and how much time does it take for it to deliver? Also, if you have suggestions for an alternative, please let me know. My budget is about 7K AED. Maybe I should wait for the Lenovo Series to release here or maybe I should just go for this one, what do you guys think?

Macbook Air M1 or Lenovo Yoga Slim 7?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 03:13 AM PDT

    Hi,

Both the Air M1 and the Slim 7 are priced similarly where I live, but the specs are somewhat different:- Air: M1 - 8/256

    - Slim 7: i7-1165G7 - 16/512

I don't have experience using MacOS but as a Business student, it is not necessary for me to use Windows all the time. However, I do play some games on my current old Windows laptop. My question is, which to pick if you are me and I am you?

Pros and cons of the Air:- Slightly better performance due to optimization?

    - Better build quality

    - Better trackpad

    - Better webcam

    - (ARM chip, poor compatibility - mostly emulated)

Pros and cons of the Slim 7:

    - Good GPU and compatibility

    - More RAM and SSD

    - (Poor QC as many have said) - kinda a big deal because I don't live in a place where multiple returns are welcomed.

    Thanks!

    Gaming + University Laptop

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      £850 - £900
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life is a nice to have but not essential as will run off of charger 80% of the time
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Don't want a laptop that is like early Alienware levels of weight and thickness, but don't need a super thin and light one
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14" - 15.6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Fusion 360, Lightroom/ Photoshop
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Forza Horizon 4, Fallout 4 + Fallout 76, GTAV, TF2, Minecraft
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Want stable key-caps as I'm sensitive to inconsistent keyboards (unlikely at this price point though), finger-print scanner would be nice, but not essential
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Not really got anything to add, been looking at the Asus TUF A15, preferably with the 90whr battery, though I don't think it is available with this battery in the UK. Edit: must have a minimum drive size of 500gb and 16gb of ram or 8 that is easily upgraded

HP Pavilion Gaming 15 vs Lenovo Legion Y540

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 02:15 AM PDT

Hey guys, please suggest which one out of the two would be a better pick. the lenovo has Intel Core i7-9750H processor . HP has Intel Core i7-10750H. I am not a gamer but would probably start soon. mainly getting the laptop for daily use. also to run virtual machines like firewalls etc, this is related to my work. both these laptops cost the same.

What is the max ram supported by the HP if anyone knows this? I keep getting different info on different websites. Also hope this laptop is not very heavy as I might need to carry it around for work but I guess a laptop trolley bag should fix that.

Laptop stand with space for keyboard

Need help deciding which one would be better for my use case or the one that would be better overall. M1 vs Gaming Laptop.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 01:19 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am looking for a laptop and I am stuck deciding between an M1 MacBook Air (16GB+512GB, 8 core GPU w/ education discount) and any other gaming laptop for the same price i.e $1330.

I have some shortlisted ones like the Legion 5 / Pro or the HP Omen 15 with probably an RTX 3060 and maybe a 5800H. You can suggest others too.

    My use cases include:

    1. School (Teams, Zoom and MS Office)
    2. Productivity (Video and Photo editing) (To be used with an iPad also)
    3. Web Browsing and Media Streaming (Netflix, Prime and YouTube)
    4. Gaming (GTA V, Minecraft, etc.) (Using Parallels for M1. I'm fine with 30 FPS in games)
    5. Streaming (Probably not, I plan to though)
    6. Virtual Machines (Just for fun. I like exploring other OSes for some reason)

Please note that I will be keeping the device for at least 3-4 years. I have no preference for one OS over the other.

    Thanks :)

Need a new laptop, curious about the vivobook

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:33 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around $800, little more is okay if needed but under 900 for sure.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    New is best

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, battery life, then build quality. Would really like a 4700u or 5700u If possible But the 6 core variants would be fine too. aluminum build like in the hp envies would be nice but not a deal breaker.

2 in 1 would be cool, but I also have a tablet so not a deal breaker either way, but I am a sucker for good built quality.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

It will be a travel machine, definitely important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15.6", smaller would be great but I need a 10key

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Adobe suite, large excel files with some big queries, fair bit of coding, cpu performance will be important. 16gb of ram minimum.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    No gaming on this machine

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Keyboard is extremely important, I type a lot and hate mushy keys. Currently using a 14" midrange lenovo and hate it. Previously had an hp spectre and envy and really liked their keyboards. My daily drive is an MX Blue keyboard. Fingerprint reader would be nice but not critical. Touchscreen nice but not critical. Asus vivobook is intriguing I like the aluminum build, specs, and price but I'm not finding much on their keyboard.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Not a whole lot else, backlit keyboard is also nice to have. I have found a lot of options from the vivobook (not sure of the keyboard is up to scratch) to some pavilions that would work. Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything else

    Gaming laptop for remote adventures

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 01:06 AM PDT

    Hey,

A bit of background; I own a 4x4 overlanding/camping van and am looking for gaming laptop to game and watch Netflix in the backcountry on rest days/days with atrocious weather.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Preferably under $2000 NZD, but can definitely go over because I kinda doubt it will be enough
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
not really sure, but if the you reckon its a good option, I'll look into it
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Some form factor would be nice (probably make it a bit easier to use in the small space of my van) but not necessary. I like good build quality. Performance is most important. Good battery life isn't super necessary, as the only times I would use it while not charging is to take notes for a few hours at Uni lectures.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Kinda important as there isn't a huge amount of space in the van, and I try to keep weight low for better 4x4 performance.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Maybe a little bit of CAD, but most would be done on my Desktop, same with video editing, but will probably be used more for video editing in the future when I travel abroad.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I would like to be able to play current RPG's, and strategy games, won't be playing to many Online game, as I probably won't have internet.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Would definitely prefer USB-C charging, otherwise I'll need to install an inverter in the van. Lower power draw would be nice, so I don't use to much my vans battery's. WWAN or Integrated Mobile Broadband would be handy but I might just get Cellular Router or something. Touch-screen would be handy.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I know it's a lot of stuff, I appreciate anyone who puts in time helping me with this

Want a laptop that's reasonably powerful but very quiet.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 12:52 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

No real budget, I don't mind spending for quality

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    eh

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Good quality, decent power, battery life doesn't matter really, but it's nice.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not at all, as long as it's not ridiculous, and even then.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

larger the better, widescreen is helpful

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Some video/photoediting, some gaming, mostly need something that can stream at 60 fps 1080p of myself.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Most games I play are fairly outdated.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

quietness, i know that quietness and power are something of an oxymoron but id prefer quietness over power and just as much power as i can get while staying realatively silent, its for streaming. Also a good built in webcam would be nice but i will be using an external.

    Oh and several USBs.

-So currently I was thinking to buy her the HP envy X360 AMD 4000 series version however I just read that the 2021 model is launched, however it comes in 15inchs which my sister doesn't want. What my question is that should I get the 2020 model with the 4700u? Will it be powerful enough to last 4 years at least, my sister wants really good battery life, good display to watch movies and do graphic design hence she is going to use the HP pen.

My sister has always liked HP laptops so she wants to stick to them. Another question is that should I get I tell 11th gen versions, is the Intel 11th gen significantly powerful and efficient than the 4000 series or 5000 series AMD u series?

In Malaysia where I live currently most laptops come with Intel version so AMD laptop will be not widely available.

Around $1,000 USD, could go up to $1,100 if necessary.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Would prefer new
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Prefer ultrabook style, don't care for touch screen. Would like decent metallic body at least, and not plastic all around. Would like decent battery life, does not have to be crazy long.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not suoer important. Don't need the thinnest and lightest laptop, just enough to be easily liftable with one hand.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Probably a 13" would do. Plan to use with docks and a monitor when not using on the couch for light web browsing, etc.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Light video editing, and audio editing, recording. Nothing super intensive for video editing, just 3-4 inute video rendering etc. Not sure what programs, maybe ableton for audio and some cheap/free video editing software.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Don't really plan to play many games, besides simple stuff like Cities Skylines once in a while.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Would like decent keyboard and touch pad and reliable build quality. Don't really care about the other options.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Just looking for a solid general use laptop that will be easily portable. Don't plan on doing anything too intensivw, but want it to run fast and reliably. Mainly for general web browsing and recording and editing audio and video of music.

I would want a laptop that lasts me at least 3 years before breaking down, and preferrably one that can be fixed if broken after the warranty period. My last laptop was the ASUS VivoBook and it's USB ports and battery stopped functioning normally right after my warranty expired, and all of that was soldered on to the MB so I couldnt even fix it myself. :|. I already have a desktop, so I can play any newest AAA games there if I really want to, this one would be mainly for studying, coding and playing to pass time if I am bored. Again, my main priority is to not waste a lot of money on something that breaks after a year.

Best laptop for gaming under $700?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 12:16 PM PDT

I found a deal at Costco for a gaming laptop: (https://www.costco.com/msi-gf75-thin-gaming-laptop---10th-gen-intel-core-i5-10300h---geforce-gtx-1650ti---144hz-1080p-display.product.100684897.html) And the member price is even lower, under $700.

Is this the best gaming computer in this price range? (My budget is $700). Other suggestions I've seen are Acer Nitro 5 and Gateway Creator.

[Help] I need a laptop that can handle MC java that is under $500 USD

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:48 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $500USD (or less)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Performance> battery life> build quality

I need a decent battery life and quality good enough for MC java on normal settings (no mods)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not very important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to

I need a laptop that can run Minecraft java edition. That is all I plan to use it for besides the occasional google search.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Minecraft java edition/ normal in game settings. (Min game FPS of 60)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      No touch screen

    1-2 HDMI ports

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't plan to download MC mods, but if possible the mods I would consider would be optifine and or world edit.

Here's a laptop I have been looking at on BestBuy.com:

    Looking college/gaming laptop recommendations

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:10 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

~$1200 (less than that preferably, but i'm open to options)

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Probably not

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality > battery life > performance

I would like a decent battery life, but I can also carry around a charger if necessary. Something that does not overheat very easily would be better, but that it kind of hard with gaming laptops.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I am a college student, so lighter is better but again I am open to options.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I want to be able to run games because my current computer (a mac) can barely run any. I would use it as a college laptop, but definitely want to be able to play games too. I am an atmospheric sciences major, so if it can handle gaming it can probably handle programming that I need as well. Again, gaming/school combination is the most important thing for me :)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Valorant, overwatch, most popular multiplayer games at a decent speed while also having tabs like discord open

I don't really play competitive but I also don't want to be restricted on what I can play like I was with my old computer

    60 fps / medium-high graphics

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I know it is hard to find with gaming laptops, but since I'm going to be using it in class a quiet fan is better. It needs a webcam and a touchpad too. Also, I want it to be able to last for as long as possible since I am probably not going to be able to afford a new one until I graduate. I know gaming laptops are not traditionally known for longevity but I hope this does not affect the options too much.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Honestly I'm open to a lot of options, but the things stated above are what are most important to me. If you know of a laptop that is known to be a good college/gaming combination but does not meet my requirements, feel free to recommend that as well. Again, I just really want to be able to run what I want without using potato graphics or sacrificing the school-practicality of it. Thank you very much for your time and I really appreciate everyone in this subreddit.

Non-gaming laptop, only needed for work (programming) [$1000, USA]

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:07 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1000 is my max. Don't need to spend that much if not necessary.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

performance > battery life > build quality

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15" but its not a huge deal. Wouldn't want to go any bigger.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Programming, doesn't actually need to run any IDEs as I use a virtual desktop program for work. Still want the system to run well, no lag or anything.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not planning on gaming, have a gaming PC already

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard, good screen visibility in sunlight (plan on working outside)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Num pad would be great! Really not looking to game on this thing, more interested in a good build quality (I've had plastic laptops get knocked around and break), longevity, and an overall good work experience.
