High guys I want to buy a laptop for school. Every computer I've had up until this point failed me and I can't seem to find a laptop that will last me. My iPhone on the other hand is pretty hearty. Do you have any recommendations for a laptop that will last me 10 years? I'm tired of buying computers.

How good are the laptop 3080s ?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 02:54 PM PDT

Title basically, Been hell bent on either building a desktop which is next to impossible with stock issues, or just biting the bullet and buying the new gen laptops with the 3080s and at least hooking them up to my double monitor...

Now obivously the laptop variant is less powerful, and I was wondering if anyone that has a laptop containing the 3070/3080, how are you liking it right now?

Im thinking of buying a laptop for 3D work and renders and also gaming on the side, but im obviously worried that in 4 years time, they wont be sufficient enough compared to a desktop 3080 with a 5900x...

I do a lot of multi-tasking having multile chrome tabs open with a 3d app open alongside having double monitor setup, will these new laptops be sufficient for this demand?

    Thoughts?

Looking to buy a light, portable, but performant laptop for use during my PhD. Please help me review my ideas, and feel free to suggest better ones!

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 08:17 AM PDT

Hi all, I know these posts are pretty common so I'll try to keep it brief. I am beginning a physics PhD in the Fall and I'm looking to purchase a new laptop to accompany my main machine, which is a dell Inspiron 7559 that that I've had for the past 4 years. This computer is plenty powerful for me to run all the data analysis I need, as well as Xilinx Vivado and any simulation software I've needed. Anything more intensive I can usually do on university machines or computing clusters.

I'd like to keep this computer at home while I'm on campus or in the office and instead just carry a more portable laptop for notes, email, scripting, and light programming. I know I don't need anything crazy for these tasks, but it's hard not to start worrying about RAM and storage and get carried away with the latest and greatest. My budget is ~1200 USD, and here are the options I've come up with so far.

    1. 2020 MacBook Air M1, 8-core CPU, 7-core GPU, 8GB Memory, 256GB SSD ($900). I've never used a Mac, and I don't particularly think I'd like MacOS, but it would be nice to have a Unix environment with a relatively hassle-free user experience, maybe I could get used to the OS. I think the memory and storage would be ok for my use case, and I don't know if an upgrade to the storage to 512GB for an extra $250 is worth it. I've read great things about battery life, speed, and temperatures on this laptop which is what seems so appealing. Not to mention the size and weight seem ideal for carrying around. Seems like a good deal for the price, but I'm not a huge fan of Apple's practices. Idk

    2. Thinkpad T460s (whatever specs I can find on the market). I really would like a Thinkpad, and this seems like a great option in terms of portability and performance. I like Windows 10, and paired with Windows Subsystem for Linux it's a great experience. My friend has one of these and I love the keyboard, screen, and form factor. My guess is that I'll not find one new, so I'm a bit hesitant to buy a used one, even if it's relatively cheap. Does anyone know whether it's a good idea to buy a thinkpad used or is it a gamble?

    3. Thinkpad T14 AMD Ryzen pro 4750, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD ($1100). This laptop and the x1 carbon seem like great choices, and the specs on this one seem like it would make it fairly performant, as well. I really like the USB 3.0

I'm not one to buy new devices very often, and there's a lot I don't know about laptops and computing performance, so I would appreciate any thoughts on the computers I've listed so far, as well as any other recommendations people might have. Thanks again in advance!

It's not worthy to buy laptops right now

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 02:07 PM PDT

I think there is nothing interesting in the laptop market right now. Not a big upgrade in processors, 720p cameras, screens with 250 nits, heavy toasters, high prices, not so much 2 in 1 options, ugly designs, etc.

People who don't need a laptop urgently should know that they're waisting their money if the buy something right now.

Best laptop for visual strain/low dpc latency

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 01:11 PM PDT

I have persistent post-concussive symptoms, and currently working on a screen is one of my most challenging tasks. Some screens cause me more visual strain than others.

I just purchased an XPS 15 9500 with FHD after returning a 13 with UHD thinking the matte screen would reduce symptoms/visual strain, but unfortunately it gives me the same issue.

I just got setup with a surface tablet 3 pro for work and even though it has a glossy screen, it causes way less visual strain for me.

Do they use different backlight technologies? I find it very difficult to find this information for Dell. Can someone suggest a good laptop for me?

I want to record music, so low dpc latency and good RAM are the 2 other main things I'm looking for.

    Thank you

Upgrading RAM on my dell inspiron 3593

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 12:52 PM PDT

Hello everyone, so I got my dell inspiron 3593 a couple months ago, and I have 8gbs of ram on it and decided to upgrade the RAM, so I bought a kingston 8gb RAM to add to the extra slot, but I was worried that sth might happen to the software or my data that's saved on the laptop, so should I do any kind of backup for my data and anything else or should I just pop it open, disconnect the battery and add the RAM in the extra slot and just turn it on?

    Thank you in advance

What kind of storage should I buy?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 06:46 AM PDT

My questions might be a little boomer-like, but I'm really bad at hardware stuff.

So I want to expand the storage of my laptop. I don't know what kind of storage should I buy and what types my laptop supports.

The laptop is a dell Latitude 3190.

Buying laptop in a 4 ish months, any suggestions (Read description)

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 08:00 AM PDT

Hi this like 4 months before I can actually get one but does any one hear have recommendations for a laptop with minimum of 8gb of ram, at least 256gb of nvme m.2 storage but 512gb is preferred, any ryzen 4000 series processor maybe 5000 series processor preferable a ryzen 5 but doesn't have to be and a absolute requirement is usb c video out put. Preferred if it is a touch screen. It would be nice if it was a 2 in 1. Price max £600 can be a little over tho but not by that much, don't mined if it's on a deal. Also it has to be some form of windows 10 I don't mind if it's in s mode I can change that.

Please advise on which laptop is better: Yoga slim 7 8GB RAM Ryzen vs Yoga slim 7i 16GB RAM Intel

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 11:45 AM PDT

Which one would perform better. The 8 GB LPDDR4x 4266MHz RAM model has Ryzen 4800U as processor, whereas the 16GB DDR4 3200MHz model runs on i5-11th gen. Which one would be a better buy assuming both can be bought for the same price?

Repaired then sent in for another repair and now the first part is messed up again

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 11:20 AM PDT

I have a 7 year old Alienware. It's battery stopped holding a charge and was stuck at 0%. I got it replaced and it was working wonderfully again. It's CMOS battery then went out and I just got it back from the geek squad at Best Buy who where replacing it. She once again turns on but it's brand new main battery once again is no longer holding a charge. What do I do? Is it only replace the battery I just replaced or could there be another problem?

I tried calling the bestbuy I just got it fixed at but "we are not taking calls at this location right now" and keeps sending me to their website and that's it.

Looking for a laptop for work.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 11:17 AM PDT

Apologies if this is not the place for such a question, but here goes:

Mostly I'm looking for a brand suggestion rather than a specific model but any advice is appreciated as I havent bought a laptop in almost ten years.

I'd like a full featured laptop as opposed to a slim model. Ideally it would have a dvd burner or similar optical drive, but if I have to buy an external one so be it.

It will be used mostly for web browsing, document and pdf editing, streaming videos. I don't want a huge screen because i do want this thing to be somewhat portable. I'm gonna use an external mouse, so I'm not worried about the touchpad for most uses. Anything else I should be worried about?

    TIA.

How sturdy or useful is USB-C for power input to laptops?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 10:58 AM PDT

    Hello,

I am rocking a 13.3" body (14" screen) slim Asus laptop with i7 (8th gen i believe) + 16 gb ram + 512 gb ssd, low-end dedicated gpu, and my ports are USB, USB-C, power, aux, card reader, and mini-HDMI. Bought around 2017.

It still has lots of life. My only complaints are mousepad has been very flimsy in the corners, especially for right click. I have to make several click attempts.

However, another thing I tend to see could be interesting is some of the latest laptops now have power input solely through USB-C. This could be very useful since I have had moments where I could use my portable battery that charges my phone to also charge my laptop. Also, carrying a wall outlet with usb-c output would be useful to be compatible with laptop+portable battery+phone.

What are yall's thoughts so far using usb-c power input? Is it sturdy enough? (like when someone at a cafe trips over your cable, does it break?) Is it actually useful? Would it be worth upgrade in a couple months (also thinking of getting 1TB ssd)?

As someone that still uses aux for audio, there aren't many laptops that have a low amount of IOs with the latest standards and still have aux available.

Laptop for programming , the limit is 1100$

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 04:33 AM PDT

I was thinking of ASUS TUF Gaming FX505GT , I know you're going to tell me why gaming laptop for programming, but I'd like to do some gaming as well.

If you'd suggest something better it would be appreciated, the thing that gets me worried is that it has core i5 9300h processor .

Tbh I never had a laptop before so I don't know much about the best specs altogether.

    Thanks
