Is there a right way and a wrong way to install some packages? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 02:11 PM PDT I was thinking of installing CodeBlocks with the GCC compiler. I heard that you have to be careful, because adding libraries on your system, could also impact how your system works. I'm not sure if this is true. Is there there a method in place to protect your entire OS from another application, that could change how is it structured. I guess is there a way to cage what CodeBlocks and GCC does; for your personal programs, so that it doesn't mess up something like the boot loader (that could be written in C++) . [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2021 10:24 AM PDT This might be a poor analogy, so I'm sorry in advance if it is. Let's say you have some game and want to mod it. Is our game is like Arch and our mod like the extra stuff other Arch-based distros add on to Arch? Is this analogy correct or even on the right track? Do the other distros only use certain pieces of Arch? Sorry if this has been answered before. When trying to find information, I couldn't find what Arch-based really meant and could really only find comparisons between Arch and an Arch-based distro. I'll admit I didn't do a deep dive though. Need advice for a software engineer coming from a windows environment. Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:18 AM PDT I am an experienced software engineer. I have always worked in a windows environment. Recently moved to a new company where the dev environment is linux. I had some issues when trying to change function names. In visual studio I would just " find all" in the archive and modify the function signature but I don't have visual studio anymore. I have a crappy nedit editor. Everytime I had to change the function and then compile(which takes fifteen minutes) to run into more errors. I don't even know if I have a lot of options to install. Our company really controls what we can and can't install. What's your advice? [link] [comments] |
Switched from a GTX 1050 TI to a AMD RX 6700 XT and Proton games no longer launch Posted: 27 Apr 2021 07:18 PM PDT Games that worked fine with Proton before the upgrade no longer even launch. This seems to be affecting all Proton games I currently own and most even have almost perfect scores on ProtonDB. Every time I open a Proton game I get a box with a loading bar, the game appears to almost fully load then crashes without an error message. Before you ask I have removed the Nvidia drivers and installed the amdgpu drivers. Also, native Linux games seem to be working perfectly fine and are recognizing my card. What I have tried
Specs CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6500 CPU @ 3.20GHz NEW GPU: AMD RX 6700 XT OLD GPU: GTX 1050 TI OS: Ubuntu 20.10 (64 bit) [link] [comments] |

How much could you change the kernel so that the same programs still work on linux? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 07:23 AM PDT For example if I wanted to use the program Ranger on a forked kernel, which parts of the kernel can be changed and which ones have to stay the same for the program to work? I'm just wondering how hard it would be to make a new OS that is fully linux/unix compatible? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2021 08:55 AM PDT I'm relatively new to Linux. I know there was a security issue not long ago with sudo. How can I update sudo? I currently have a VM running Ubuntu. If I just run sudo apt update. Then sudo apt upgrade. Will that update sudo? I also updated ubuntu through there update software as well. [link] [comments] |
Remove green check on desktop icons Posted: 28 Apr 2021 02:21 PM PDT Hi, I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 21.04. Since the upgrade, green checks appeared on my desktop icons, which I would like to remove (on "Valid" or "Cancel" contextual frames as well). Do anyone know how to do that ? Thanks ! How do I manage and add music to an iPod? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 06:49 AM PDT I've been trying to add music to my iPod and been using strawberry, the problem is it says "organizing files" for a long time and I can't see my music on my iPod. Is there a better service or am I just using this one incorrectly? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2021 02:08 PM PDT TLDR: Are there any Linux File Managers that have: 4 panel support, dark theme/mode, ability to remember locations that you had open when you closed the file manager, working forward/back mouse buttons? SpaceFM is nearly perfect but forward/back mouse buttons do not work. Hi there. I've been trying out various File managers on Debian and attempting to figure out which one would fit my workflow the best. So far "SpaceFM" seems almost perfect (it has 4 panel support, dark mode and remembers the last folders you had open). However it has one major flaw which I haven't managed to find a fix to: forward/back mouse buttons do not work. In other File managers mouse forward/back works, in SpaceFM it does not. So my question is...
Do you know any Linux file managers that have:

Opinions on this for a new system (Win 10 + Xubun + Arch + Swap) Posted: 28 Apr 2021 07:31 AM PDT Finally got my tax refund from the IRS so I pulled the trigger on a blazing, impressive Lenovo Ideapad 3 15.6 (256 SSD, 8 RAM). /s (Yeah, I know, but it was pretty cheap and it's still adequate as-is, and I don't have to immediately crack it open and replace/add things, plus, it arrives later today). For once, I think I'm going to leave Win10 on it, let it have 50 GB (which I think is just about enough for Office + Photoshop + a few other smaller programs [no games]), plus I'll cut out Update, Cortana, fonts/languages I don't need, etc. (if I get around to it...probably not). Probably just leave Edge as the only browser, since I don't intend to do anything with the machine online. 20-50 GB for Xubuntu. Don't know why. Just redundancy, I guess. Probably just ext4. 100 GB for Arch, which I envision as my main go-to system, after months of using it in a VM. Yes, I'll continue to use xfce on Arch, but the larger size is intended for loading it with all my usual stuff, media players, editors, browsers, etc etc. Probably Btrfs (new to me) or XFS. Likely no Logical Volumes, just regular "flat" partitions. 8 GB swap (partition, not file: shared between the linuces). and whatever left over as a storage partition, probably in NTFS. I think that's pretty compact and streamlined for a basic daily driver. I've got still got this CentOS "Stream" (:( on a very underpowered box I'm typing on right now, and some other stuff around, like a glorified streaming-video ubuntu box, plus a bunch of external HDDs. //EDITED to add: changed mind about xfce on Arch. I forgot my current VM uses KDE + Plasma, which was newer to me and I kind of like it. Not important, just an update. [link] [comments] |
First time trying Linux, which distro should I chose? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 01:19 PM PDT Pretty much what title says, It's gonna be my first time using a Linux and I'm not sure which one to chose, I thought Linux Mint and PopOS would be my "best choices", Fedora also caught my eye but I still don't know much about it so ye. I tried Linux Mint Mate and PopOS (Nvidia) inside VM and both look cool, Mint caught my interest because it is supposed to be one of the most stable distros but when I tried it inside VM it seemed a bit "clunky", it was responsive and all, but animations and stuff just seemed weird and off kinda. I also tried PopOS and it looks much more responsive and cleaner to me so I kinda can't decide, never tried Fedora tho. (I didn't manage to fully install PopOS inside VM for some reason, it failed near the end and I didn't really bother to try solve the problem, tho I think it's because I need to boot it in "legacy" mode). I don't play games that much, got tired of them, I mostly watch anime, browse the internet or do some schoolwork. Even if I decide to play games at some point, I'm pretty sure I can do it on windows inside VM. I'm looking for stable, and possibly lightweight distro so I'm open for suggestions. Here are my specs if it will help you determine what's best distro for me. [link] [comments] |
BorgBackup and file changes detection ? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 01:12 PM PDT I'm using a Linux machine and I'm using BorgBackup to backup this machine and I'm thinking to have another machine so I will be able to send the backup files to this machine using rsync and I will create Backup using crontab my question is if I'm going to backup my Linux machine using crontab so what BORG is going to do just overwrite the same file ? I don't really know I mean is it possible to use Borg using crontab but what about the name of the backup ? Best Regards [link] [comments] |

Is the gnome software store safe? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 01:03 PM PDT I want to install some programs available on the gnome software store but I would like to know how safe it is, is it completely malware free? I know this might be a dumb question but I'm coming from windows and the microsoft store is well known for not being so secure, so that's where my fear comes from. [link] [comments] |

Trying to create routing tables with iproute2... and failing. Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:06 AM PDT I'm trying to use iproute2 to create individual routing tables for multiple interfaces on a Rasberry pi. I created the table names in /etc/iproute2/rt_tables, and ran "ip route add ... table example" for each table. This seems to have no effect. The new routes do not show up in the routing table, and packets are not routed correctly. There are no error messages for any of these commands, and "ip route show table example" shows that the routes have been applied to the tables. The individual routes work when I run "ip route add ..." without specifying a table, so I know its not a syntax error with my routes. It just seems like the tables are ignored. Is there a way to "apply" a table to an interface? What am I missing here? If you want more details on what I'm trying to do, basically I'm turning a Rasberry Pi into a kg175 encryption device.
