Important announcement - We are temporarily not allowing tech support posts!

    Posted:

Good day all, I'm making an announcement that is long overdue. We are conducting an experiment on no longer allowing tech support "help" posts on /r/Windows. This experiment will be for about 24 hours, starting at around 8AM Eastern on Friday April 2nd, then we will allow them again Saturday morning. This only affects /r/Windows, the rest of the subreddits in our network are going to continue to operate like normal.

Help posts made during this time frame will be removed. We are recommending people looking for help with Windows, its built in software, functions and such post in our new help subreddit /r/WindowsHelp. Posts that are not directly related to Windows like 3rd party software, hardware, networking issues, and so on should be posted in /r/TechSupport. That has always been a rule here and will continue to be the rule even after this experiment ends.

You might be asking, "what constitutes a tech support post?". While there is some grey area for this, it will basically come down to is something broken, or would you be bringing your PC to a shop to fix it if this was still the days before the internet. BSoDs? Updates won't install? You deleted System32? Those are tech support posts and all three of those are examples that you should post in /r/WindowsHelp.

To be clear, you can still start a discussion and ask questions here. Do you want to learn how to encrypt your drive with Bitlocker? How about pondering the release date of the next feature update? Maybe you are curious as to the best way to backup your files. Yes, you could be asking for help, but you would not be asking us to help fix things or troubleshoot an issue.

I know I picked the worst day of the year to make this announcement, but I'm no fool!

Display settings won't open in Windows 10

    Posted:

    Like the title says.

When I right click on my home screen and select "display settings" it will freeze on the application launch screen. Same thing happens if I try to launch it by searching for it in the search bar.

If I try to access is by opening the settings app and clicking on "system", the app will freeze and eventually crash.

I can open sound, notifications, and power settings by searching them in the search bar, so I know this issue is just with display settings.

It's been stuck like this for months and I haven't been able to find a solution. Can anyone help me out?

I’m new to coding and I’d like to start writing windows programs, where do I start?

    Posted:

So I'm not very good at coding. The extent of my knowledge is some basic HTML. Windows is my favourite desktop OS, and I think it would be fun and useful to know how to write programs for it. Does anybody have any resources for people like me who are complete noobs to writing windows apps, but would like to start? Thanks in advance, it's much appreciated

Is there any way to disable drag and dropping files to the Navigation pane of Windows Explorer?

    Posted:

It may seem odd, but honestly, it's a function I almost never want, but accidentally set off all the time.

I'll be trying to drag a file from one window to another, there's some hangup, some bit of lag because it accesses a drive that was asleep, and bam, the image I'm trying to save is suddenly in a shared dropbox folder, or lost in some other folder. (And yes, I can hit undo, but then it shows up in the dropbox history, or it's just an extra step.)

I could go through the process to remove dropbox from the navigation pane (which is more difficult than you would think) but honestly, I like using the navigation pane to get to folders, and that only solves one aspect of the inconvenience. I just don't want to be able to add content to folder from the pane itself.

No Bluetooth installed on my pc

I was trying to connect my Bluetooth headphones to my pc when I found that it wasn't even attempting to search for my device and would immediately say 'couldn't connect'. To my surprise, I found that in my device manager Bluetooth was nowhere to be listed.. in this case do I just install Bluetooth drivers? Where should I install them from? Does windows have offical Bluetooth drivers I can install?

My Windows device wants me to update but is stuck on 20% of Installing.

So my Windows laptop PC wants me to install a new update for "security and quality fixes", but every time I click install, the update status is always stuck on Installing at 20% until it eventually gives up a few minutes later. What do I do to make my device update easily?

    Popquizz 169.254.x.x

    Posted:

I have a strange query that I wonder if someone can help me with. On one of the networks I work on someone has used 169.254.x.x addresses on their network equipment. Yes I know this is wrong but let's set that aside. I have a Windows, Linux and a Mac. On the Mac and Linux machines I am able to route to these network devices on the network without any issues at all. I have tried very hard to make this work on Windows with no joy. No matter what I did I just get the following, see e.g. when trying to ping:

    C:\>ping 169.254.0.1

Pinging 169.254.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:
    PING: transmit failed. General failure.
    PING: transmit failed. General failure.

Is there a way to just make Windows ignore all the link-local stuff and treat 169.x as a normal IP subnet?

    Thanks

    BitLocker Help

    Posted:

So apparently our business laptop updated and set up its own recovery key or something. I'm not sure how to gain back access to our laptop without it. Apparently there isn't a Microsoft account associated with this computer and no restore points have been made. Any attempt made to uninstall recents updates is pointless because it takes us back to needing the recovery key.

    Please help ;_;
