    Home Networking Suitable Ubiquiti Alternative?

    Home Networking Suitable Ubiquiti Alternative?

    Suitable Ubiquiti Alternative?

    Posted:

This has probably been asked a million times but im going to ask again with the latest "news" about ubiquiti and most of the posts I can find are quite dated (since the omada line is expanding rapidly).

Im planning a whole home + workshop network install and want to get it right. I work from home and want work devices on a seperate VLAN. I will also be running a number of POE IP Cameras / NVR that I want to make sure cannot speak to the internet. Theres also a need for an iot SSID. I also have a plex server for backups / streaming around the house and storing NVR footage. I mainly just need a reliable setup and something easy to manage. My ISP can only deliver 55 mbps (no gigabit stuff).

My plan so far was a UDM (non pro) with several POE switches from Ubiquiti. The appeal was the single interface and the (supposedly) powerful AP. After the recent breach and how it has been handled im not sure I want to spend money with a company like that.

So first: Should I be looking at finding an alternative to ubiquity or should I not worry about everyhitng that has happened?

Second: Who can provide a suitable alternative? TP-Link Omada looks nice and after installing the container for the controller it looks identical to the Ubiquiti one I demo'd. How do the features compare and does Omada offer a "full ecosystem" of switches, routers, and APs? The TP-Link products seem (on the whole) a fair bit cheaper for equal or better "specs" but am I missing something that sets ubiquity apart from these cheaper tp-link products?

Cable Modem: High Bit Error Rate on Only One Channel

    Posted:

I've got an old (ca. 2013) DOCSIS 3.0 modem from Thomson.

I also had a tree take out my feed coax. The feed coax was spliced rather than replaced.

The short version is I don't know if I'm better served by replacing the hardware, or replacing the feed line so that it's not spliced.

The symptom I'm seeing is that one (and only one) of the "Forward Path" channels (ie- outbound) is de-syncing. The Bit Error Rate (BER) is consistently around 2-3%, but will spike up to 30-40% and renders the connection very unstable. All other channels are consistently at a 0% BER.

I figure the BER only affecting one channel means it's likely a hardware issue rather than the line. If the coax line was noisy, I would think it would be noisy on more than one channel. But I guess it's possible that there's some weird issue causing only challenges at the 483.0 MHz range (but not the 477.0 MHz or 489.0 MHz ranges.)

This is a shot in the dark, as I know we're getting pretty specific.

Do you think the modem is dying? Or the feed line? Anyone seen their modem fail this way?

So many cat6 options. Which should we use?

    Posted:

    $

    $$

    $$$

Speaking more specifically to wire in walls, attics, and crawlspaces. I used the $$$ to wire my current house. I'm usually the type to overengineer whatever I do, especially if it's something I want to do once and never again. But how different are these cables from each other? I don't want to cheap out and have issues, but is the $$ option or even the $ option a good alternative??

    Thanks!

Managed PoE switches - what should I buy?

    Posted:

    Hello --

I fitted the house with a few Netgear managed switches a few years ago - since the topology is weird in this old house with detached garage, I ended up needing a 16 port main switch, and an 8 port and a 5 port auxiliary switch on different locations.

Time brought a few Unifi access points (local only, luckily) and some cameras, so I was thinking of getting rid of all those ugly injectors and go PoE.

Although the Netgears serve me well (I don't really need much more than just VLAN's, really), I was reluctant to go with them again due to the requirement for an online account to manage the switches. Should I just put up with that, or is there an recommendable alternative around? Ideally I'd have a 16 port with at least 8 PoE ports main switch, and smaller switches that can be fed by PoE and distribute power to one or two ports, if that doesn't push it too far.

I am in Europe and somewhat price sensitive, but not too much (if it fits the bill, but is slightly expensive, I'll bite the bullet). Reasonable power consumption, especially when mostly idle, and non obnoxious fans would be nice.

    What should I buy?

Steal of the century, 48 port ubiquiti poe switch that i just landed for 80% off. The catch? I don't have a server... so what should i make out of this bad boy?

    Posted:

Ok so here is the deal, for some reason a friend of mine who works at a major networking company landed a 48 port ubiquiti poe switch. Worth 835 bucks new, im getting it for 250. So i have this massive switch, but no rack, no server, no use for it.... yet. The reality is i've been wanting to build a nas for awhile, i have an ethernet connected modem, router, xbox, ps5, smart tv, computer, pi, and secondary laptop on dock with ethernet. So im using SOME of the ports, but not anything close to 48! Don't even have extra AP's in the place, its a fucking apartment!

So basically my budget is low as hell, and i want to make a NAS but probably can't afford a proper one for awhile, any recommendations on what i should do with this thing? I do work in IT and want to develop my knowledge of networking and servers, so im down to do some projects! Maybe some PI clusters that do things? Make my own home automation? Get 40 POE powered led lights and create the worlds most over networked led clock? I'm winging it here guys, what does a man do to start out?

Is my network engineer roommate screwing us?

    Posted:

TLDR: Can you limit other devices connection speed on a belkin router? How can I find out if this is what's going on?

Recently moved into a room with strangers. One of them is network engineer. My wifi connection is trash, ~15 mbps, 25 at bEST, even though my landlord claims we have a high internet speed plan, which I actually believe.

We use a belkin router, and he has an ethernet connection to his room.I was curious to see what was going on so I logged into the router admin. There wasn't any access control restrictions, but I'm not sure if I was looking in the right place and every router's admin page is different so I was having trouble researching where to possibly look for dirt (I'm a cs student, but they don't really teach home networking :p )

So I just rebooted the router, which helped a tiny, but now I try to login to the router again and it refuses connection. I can only assume he noticed that and me logged in as admin, so he disabled remote admin access since he's the only one with a physical connection... I mean I guess if he was worried for security that would make sense but that's super shady????

SO, r/HomeNetworking please help me out, because google only has troubleshoot solutions lol. Could he be screwing us with router configurations? If so how would I go confronting him about this to make sure.

    Ethernet Port without wiring

    Posted:

Recently moved into a new home, router is on second floor whilst I'm in the 3rd floor. I have 2 devices that are only connectable via ethernet. I cannot run a wire upstairs due to landlord restricting drilling so I'm wondering how I go about connecting these devices. I already know I won't be getting the full speed, but there must be some sort of solution like a wireless access point that uses WiFi rather than a ethernet cable (with atleast one ethernet port)? Hoping people can recommend exactly what equipment I need to get this done so I can go buy it at the store today.

Noob question, trying to move a modem to a different room connected via a coaxial. Will it work?

    Posted:

Theres a modem in my parents room that im pretty sure is actually a second access point(?) for the upstairs and another modem downstairs. Anyways i want to move the upstairs modem from my parents room to my room (also upstairs) instead of running a ~30ft ethernet cable for my pc/xbox for gaming.

The modem is connected via a coaxial from the wall and my room has a vacant coaxial cable on the wall that i think was used for cable tv.

My question is can i just simply take that modem, unplug it from that wall, and move it my room and hook it up to that vacant coaxial outlet?

Im the only one whos gonna take advantage of an actual wired ethernet connection since they just do some light browsing and occasional streaming via wifi anyway.

Can I put 2.5 or more Gbps sfp+ module in "1Gbps" switch ?

    Posted:

    Hi,

I am new in higher than 1Gbps speeds and I have a question: I can buy D-LINK DGS-1210-10 in really really good price. I see it has 10 ports and 2sfp+ ports. Can I put 2.5Gbps transceiver in a switch like that or does the switch needs to be prepared for that? Switch is rated for 20 Gbit/s. I cannot go higher because of the cables that are in walls (maybe 5Gbps at most). I have tried looking for an answer here but I could not find one.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Help setting up a wireless access point to home router

    Posted:

(Hardware details listed at end) I'm trying to get wifi in my shop out back but the signal from my router doesn't quite reach, just enough to piss me off. I have a modem router combo and have to leave it in the room it's in for my wife who works from home. I got up in the attic today and ran an Ethernet cable from my router out to the corner of the house where my shop is closest to and hooked up this access point I bought. It said outdoor rated and has big ass antennas so I figure it will get the job done.

I plug in the Poe injector and plug the lan side into my router and the Poe side into the Ethernet to AP. AP boots up, but no link light on router. My routers web page doesn't show the AP as a connected wired device.. the access point is broadcasting but my devices fail to connect, no internet connection.. I have to connect to it to set it up though? DHCP is turned on..

I'm worried I should have bought an extender instead. Maybe my router and the AP are fighting for who is going to broadcast? Like I would have to disable my routers wifi network and let the APs mesh wifi take over? I'm at a loss..

Router- Netgear CX something, can check if need be WAP- TP-Link EAP225

    Port Forwarding for Unturned

    Posted:

Hi, I am trying to start a little unturned server for my girlfriend and I. I have the server created but it only shows up in LAN for me to play, my girlfriend cannot see it. I tried port forwarding because from what I've read that is the problem. The router address is 192.168.254.254. I login fine and get to the port forwarding page but when I click add nothing happens. Here's a link to what happens when I click add. I've no idea how to fix it. https://imgur.com/rlDpbgf

    Managed network devices newbie question

    Posted:

I'm starting to move from a non managed network to a managed network. I was reading posts about different brands and that got me to thinking. Is it possible to to mix and match gear?

I currently have a ubiquiti 8 port switch as my first managed device. I also downloaded their controller software and adopted the switch on my setup and can configure it using the ubiquiti software.

I realize my network isn't an optimal setup.

    1. If I decide to switch to TP-link Omada can I manage the ubiquiti switch with their software? Conversely can I purchase an Omada switch and manage it with the ubiquiti software.
    2. I'm also assuming that 'brains' Dream machine series for Ubiquiti and OC300 for TP-link Omada are the parts that you don't want to mix and match.

I realize that over the years things will change so I would like to be able to still use the gear until it breaks or I need to upgrade. I tend to purchase my equipment as I have available funds and would prefer not to have to replace a managed switch down the road if I don't have to. Or have to replace, most if not all the current hardware because I switched brands. Obviously the controller hardware/software combo would need to change but what else would.

    Any basic advise is appreciated.

    New home internet woes

    Posted:

I'm moving into a new house in the next few weeks, it's 60/70 years old and looks like it may have at one point been wired for phones. The previous owners had a DSL provider in the area but I'm trying to switch over to the high speed provider in the area which I've used in the past and has better speeds.

I'm wondering, since I don't see any sort of existing cabling in the house for the high speed provider (that will use coax), what are they going to do to bring it into the house. Are they going to dig in the yard? Run a cable from a utility line? Any idea to know how they plan to get it to me? There is no sort of cable distribution anywhere in the house.

    Fast Home VPN appliance

    Posted:

I'm needing to install a device that will connect everything that connects downstream of it to the VPN of my choice. I've done a search several times and I can't seem to find the right combination of words to find an article that explains how to do this. In a business environment this would just be a firewall Appliance, I think... Anyway I already have Wi-Fi throughout the home so I'm NOT looking for a VPN capable access point, but a hardwired option. Anything out there with good GUI and works downstream from the a consumer main edge router (the Att gateway)?

I would rather not have to have some sort of a advanced ISP configuration where they assign me multiple static IP addresses! I just want a simple device where everything downstream of it is sent through VPN. It's this not possible?

I'll venmo 50 bucks to someone who gets me there!

    Is Gigabit Internet Worth it?

    Posted:

I am currently on a trial period for Cogeco's 1 Gigabit Fiber plan and was wondering what your thoughts on gigabit internet was. I live in the GTA and have been with an ISP called CIK Telecom for a while now, and the main reason for switching over to Cogeco was because CIK Telecom was sometimes unstable. About 3-5 days out of the month the internet was bad and unusable outside of editing google docs, and while this may just seem like whining, it also impacted zoom calls and such.

I payed about $70 or so for a 60/10 plan (with phone) at CIK, this gigabit plan (with phone) is 1000/30 for $130. On Paper, it seems like a no brainer to choose Cogeco Fiber over CIK's plan because for about twice the money, you get more than 15 times the speed. But whats holding me back from fully committing to Cogeco is the usage. Me and one other person in the house game regularly, and thats about it. The 1 Gigabit is hardly ever fully utilized outside of downloads, and most content providers can't deliver data that fast.

Now, don't me wrong, Cogeco's 1 Gigabit Fiber is top notch, I can get about 940mbps which is very close to the maximum speed I can achieve, I just don't want to pay for internet I don't use, its like buying a mansion but only living in the shed out in the yard.

So my question is, would you keep Gigabit or consider upgrading to Gigabit internet? Why or why not?

    Ruckus ICX-7150 and 2x R500 issues

    Posted:

I recently purchased preowned ruckus gear including an ICX 7150-C12p and 2 R500s from eBay.

I expected to be greeted by a configure-me.xxxx wifi connection but either AP has an islandxxxx wifi connection and the password is not super, sp-admin, root or password.

From here, I assumed I would have to configure the switch via a COM port. All the documentation from ruckus I have read claims I can manage it with the USB-c console port and a terminal emulation program (I've tried putty and HyperTerminal on my PC and tio on my popOS laptop) Neither of my devices were able to get the switch to communicate (running on the right COM port, the baud rate is correct, everything matches documentation). I get a terminal window but no "device>" prompt, just a blinking cursor. I can't flash new firmware because I can't get into the console. I am using the USB-c cable that came with my pixel, do I need to switch this out? Do I need an RJ45 to serial and a serial to USB that follows RS-232? PLEASE HELP!

Need help choosing a new router

    Posted:

I am one of the least tech savvy people in the world so bear with me as I flounder around with this plan.

I have a really inconsistent connection with the WiFi in my bedroom and upon reading up on router issues, it seems like the two major issues are that my current router (ARRIS TG1672G) is outdated and the walls in the apartment may be reinforced with concrete. Due to the current furniture layout and some wiring around the apartment, it's not super feasible to move the router closer to my room so I'm considering getting another router to place in my room and use as an access point. If I do this, I'm assuming I would put the new router where the current one is and then use the current one as the access point, right? Would vice versa be better? Does it matter?

So now I have the conundrum of needing a new router but not knowing anything about purchasing a router since I've just kept the one my internet provider gave me. There have been a lot of mixed reviews on almost every router I've looked at and I don't know if the poor reviews are because the routers are actually bad or if it's just that people set it up incorrectly. I'm also a uni student so my budget isn't super great (I'd say about $150 CAD is my absolute max, but I'd prefer to spend less if possible) so I know that limits my "good" options. I don't need a mega powerhouse of a router (Is that a thing? I don't know.) since a lot of my internet usage is just keeping up with schoolwork, but I do play on my PS4 a fair bit too so I'd like something that keeps my gaming experience pretty smooth as well. So far these are the one's that have caught my eye but I am open to suggestions if there are better ones!:
    NETGEAR AC1200 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 5 Router
    ASUS Wireless AX1800 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6 Router (RT-AX55)
    TP-Link Archer AX20 AX1800 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6 Router

I'm looking to add a rack to my house. I want to run ethernet to each room. I understand the fundamentals of a switch and patch panel. What I'm confused about is my router/modem/wifi combo. Do I just run one ethernet from that into the switch and then the switch to patch panel? Should I have something in between for different ip assignments?

I'm wanting to move where my coax enters the house

    Posted:

I'm pretty noob-tacular. The setup (not pictured) as is does not look super professional as it is, it's literally just a hole drilled through the exterior siding into the living room and then it looks like there's some exterior caulking covering it. This isn't included in the imgur album.

    Album of photos imgur link

I'd like do drill through this Coax "patch panel" as I've referred to it in the album, and put my modem and router in my garage that we're going to finish. I've got 1 run of cat5e and 3x80ft of Cat6 coming from Amazon in the next few days, as well as a couple of switches, but most of that is for a different post.

My question is mostly, is there a right way to change how the Coax runs through into my house? I'm planning on just drilling straight through from the outside in and then pushing the coax, that runs another 100feet all around the outside of my house for seemingly no reason, in right there where it comes outta the ground. I'm a little early since everything is just a few feet below my main power breaker, but I can't imagine it's a real concern if that's where all my telecom/cable is running already.

I would rather not have to buy another modem and a router.

Getting very slow (30mbps) wifi when acceleration is enabled, and 300ish max speeds on wired and LAN when acceleration is disabled. Is there any way to get fast speeds on both?

How do I fix spotty connections in my house?

Bedroom 1, 3, and the rooms upstairs the connection always cuts in and out, and its also very weak in the living room at times. What would the suggestion be to fix these issues? To add all the walls in the house are made of wood. Theres not an inch of sheet rock.
