Posted: 28 Apr 2021 01:26 PM PDT Hi, I have three devices with the name of 'PC-IPADDRESS' and have no clue what they are. Overloaded Wifi Help - Lots of users Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:16 AM PDT I temporarily have a bunch of people connecting to my home network for the next few weeks, about 20 laptops. I have a Netgear C7100V - Nighthawk AC1900 with 600 mpbs service from Comcast/Xfinity. I've never had any issues until this week when all they are connecting, then the internet drops the wifi first then the LAN. I've tried splitting up the devices on the 2.4 ghz and the 5.0 gz channels and still having issues. After a few restarts it seems to stabilize. Am I just overloading the wifi? Would hardwiring a second wifi router to use as a WAP solve this problem? I'm planning to pick up the xfi modem/router and upgrade to 1,000 mpbs with unlimited data today (I'm going over my data without the kids here and its $25 for unlimited data if I use their equipment vs $30 if I use mine... ) Trying to figure out if I need a second router. Update1: Thanks everyone for all of the information and suggestions. I've changed the gateway to the xfinity xfi gateway since comcast gave me a better deal getting unlimited data. Also added a triband wifi router that is hardwired to the gateway. I'll update if the problems persist or if fixed. May end up trying some of the other proposed solutions. Posted: 28 Apr 2021 06:43 PM PDT A jerk off technician set up my brand new router when I got my new broadband connection. It's a TP-Link Archer C6 v3.20. You're supposed to enter a new password for logging into the router's settings when you set up the router. The jerk off technician failed to tell me this password, I'm guessing intentionally. This is a third world Muslim country btw so shit like this is pretty common lol. Now I try to get in touch with him but he's nowhere to be found. How convenient. The default "admin" or the number at the back of the router doesn't work so obviously he entered a new password while setting up the router. I could reset the router but I'm wondering if that would clear all the settings and password for the ISP and stop me going online. [link] [comments]

Posted: 28 Apr 2021 05:55 PM PDT I've got Starlink, but the point where the modem and router must be is on the far end of my very long house. Does anyone have opinions on the best mesh system for distance? I get 100 or so MPS at the router, but by the time it reaches the house (about 100 ft away) it goes anywhere from 7-15. I'm using the old Google Wifi mesh, and I don't mind spending some money on improving the home wireless network, but wanted to get some non-advertisement opinions from folks who have had success extending a network beyond the standard range. Spectrum Modem Device Limit? Does this sound right? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 05:26 PM PDT Hoping someone can help me out... I'm working on a friend's small office project but it's been awhile since I've done anything with the provided hardware. I'm replacing some old equipment and a cabling nightmare. But before I start buying stuff does this sound right? He has a Technicolor TC8717T modem/router provided by Spectrum. I was planning on using that as the router and running it to an unmanaged switch for 6-7 wired devices. Off the switch I was planning on using his WiFi router as an access point for a handful of wireless devices, probably 5-10. Any idea if these routers will connect/support this many devices? Will all of the devices still be able to communicate to each other? Sorry if these are dumb questions. I haven't used the modem provided by the cable company in 15+ years. Thank you!!! Having to reset router everyday Posted: 28 Apr 2021 03:14 PM PDT As the title says, I have to reset my router every single day at least once, and it have been going on for a long time, no idea for how long, probably a few months. I have to reset it because the wi-fi connection decides to just die, but only if you disconnect and try to reconnect (already connected devices work fine, but if you just arrived sometimes it just wont connect which probably means it's a firmware problem?). What pisses me off so much is that this router is provided by my internet company, so I called them one day, they switched the router for a new one (the one I have right now), and it worked fine, until said problem started. (This is gonna sound very stupid) I'm a 17 yo (meaning my dad takes care of internet and stuff) and I don't have a job to just buy a router that doesn't suck, nor can I just switch companies :/ so I thought about asking for some help here. Hope you can help me :D [link] [comments]
Is TP-LINK Deco M9 Plus a good investment in 2021? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 02:38 PM PDT Hello Redditors. Seeking advice. My grandparents currently live in a townhouse and are typical internet users. They use internet for email & browsing primarily. They have been using WR841N that I setup some years ago. Combined with getting long in the tooth and some flakiness recently (although I'm not sure if it the hardware or the wiring the ISP was "playing" with outside their townhouse - I made sure it has the firmware when I visited them last week) they also intend to move into a ranch style home later this year. Grampa requested that I replace the Wi-Fi router and I obliged. Knowing their use is light, now and even after moving to a ranch home, I didn't want to spend too much as they are on limited income. Then I saw the latest Costco ad come in the mailer & saw that they are going to sell the Deco M9 Plus (3 pack tri-band) for $149 in May. I thought tri-band mesh wi-fi router with dedicated backhaul sounded great even if they choose a big ranch house to move into. Since they are and will continue to be light users, I was not too worried about the theoretical top speed. What I want to be cognizant is about security. From that perspective, is the M9 Plus a good investment in 2021 for the next 3 to 4 years? The TP-Link website's specs didn't mention WPA3 and didn't know if that will be a problem. Also, do we need an TP-Link online account to configure the M9 Plus or can we locally configure it? Or at least disable online access from the internet after the M9 Plus pucks are configured? Thank you for your thoughts! [link] [comments]
Building a router with Pihole as the base OS, any pitfalls? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 02:28 PM PDT I've purchased a small Dual-NIC computer in the hopes of setting it up as a kind of all-in-one networking box / router. Optimally, I would like to be able to set my ISP modem/router box into bridge mode (which I gather just turns everything off for you to do it yourself?), and manage NAT, DHCP and DNS on this one box, as well as a firewall (through iptable rules?), network monitoring (ntopng) and a Wireguard VPN access point. I've used a PiHole VM for quite some time now, and am very familiar with its CLI and GUI interface, and have set it up as my DHCP server and DNS resolver with Unbound, and as I am relatively inexperienced I got to thinking that it'd be nice if I could use this as a base and build off of it, but am left unsure if I have missed some possible pitfalls in this kind of a setup? Would there be any potential issues of the additional configurations I make breaking when updating PiHole for example? Are there any glaring incompatibilities between packages I've missed, or just something that doesn't seem to make sense to pair or do this way from someone more experienced with setting up networks? Is there a benefit to say, running DNS on a barebones Debian/Ubuntu box with bind instead of unbound recursively on the PiHole? I'm hoping the answer is as simple as "Linux is Linux" so I could just treat the Pihole as the slightly customized Debian it is, and then add on whatever I want, but am left a bit unsure. Thanks in advance for any input! TL;DR Pihole on bare-metal dual-NIC > set it as local DHCP and DNS servers > manually configure NAT via iptables > also run ntopng and wireguard: does it make sense? Need to replace isp hitron router with edge router 6FP Posted: 28 Apr 2021 08:02 PM PDT I am going to replace iso hitron router with edge router 6P. What are the things i need to be careful about ? I only have Port forwarding and dhcp reservation on old router. Can i just enter those in edge router while configuring it before deploying it to production so that all my devices connect seamlessly ? Should i also look into setting vlans for iot devices while i am doing this ? [link] [comments]
What am I looking at? Advice for a noob Posted: 28 Apr 2021 04:14 PM PDT Hey lovely peeps, Apologies if I'm in the wrong place to be posting a question like this. In short, when we moved in here we were told our place was fitted with network cabling, we have a few RJ45 outlets throughout the house. It's a new place (2016). I don't believe they're activated or connected to our router but hasn't been an issue as we just exclusively used wifi. Over the years we've added 2 kids and countless wireless, smart devices, etc and with us working from home, I'd like to finally utilize these network drops for our work stations. When looking at our networking nook, I'm a bit lost in what I'm looking at (pictured above). I can clearly see the multiple ethernet cords (that I assume are connected to the rj45 outlets) rolled together and then appear to be attached to this panel (circled). Not pictured just out of view below, is our Router, with the single cable connected from the ISP. So my question is, does anyone know what is missing in this link to connect the router to this panel. Or am I missing something like another chord that's supposed to connect to the router. Any insight would be appreciated. I've done some googling, but I lack the proper lingo to even know what I'm searching for. Many thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Apr 2021 01:55 PM PDT Recently upgraded to 1Gig internet and have the ARRIS SBG8300 but it's just gone downhill. It heats up, signal is really bad and it's just honestly a bad investment overall. I'm thinking on switching but don't know whether the best option would be a modem/router combo, maybe separate or even mesh? My provider does require DOCSIS 3.1 but I'm not an expert in the matter. Price does not really influence the choice. Any advice is welcomed Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
What's a router comparable to the Asus RT-AC86U that's not Asus branded? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 07:04 PM PDT I'm having a security issue with my Asus RT-AC86U, The issue is that the names of some devices on my network keep getting changed to mostly Asian and sometimes English names, I am the only one that has the user and pass to my router and I have never given this info to anyone. Sometimes there's up to 20 unidentified devices connected that have mostly Asain names. I think my router has a backdoor virus on it. I have factory reset and changed the user and pass on the router about 10 times and it keeps coming back. I called my ISP about this and they have no idea how to fix it, neither did Asus when I contacted them. I have the latest version of the merlin firmware on it as well. To avoid this issue I'd like to get a new router that is not Asus branded. I like the multiple clients openvpn support and Tor options on the Asus merlin firmware, if there is a router like the AC86U that has similar features that's not Asus branded please let me know. I am looking for a router with the best security so these features are not a deal breaker for me, the best security possible is important so this issue doesn't happen again. Any info is appreciated. Just got upgraded to 200mb Spectrum service. Still using SB6141, getting 120mb down,,,? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 03:03 PM PDT I recently got upgraded to 200mb internet for free(?) from Spectrum. I am guessing because ATT Fiber is getting ready to go in my area? Anyhow I am still using an old SB6141 modem. It's a workhorse! I've never had a single problem with it. Anyhow I notice on (wired) speed tests I am only getting 120-140mb down. Is my modem a bottle neck now? What is my next own your own modem option that is as reliable? Connection stable router under $200 Posted: 28 Apr 2021 03:03 PM PDT Hi everyone I'm looking for a new router since I'm upgrading my internet. I don't know much about routers so I unsure on which one to get. I've seen recommendations for the Netgear R6700 and the Asus RT-AC86U but I've seen both positive and negative reviews for them. A bit of background is that my house is about 1,400 sq ft but it's a bit old so upstairs has a lil trouble with connection. The main people who would be using it is my mom and I so I would having my gaming PC on it for hours a day running, my moms IPAD usually 24hours, and a couple of mobile devices that need constant connection. Any recommendations? The two above are recommendations I found on reddit that some people recommended for gaming. [link] [comments]
TP-Link TL-PA4010P - Two distribution boxes - no connection Posted: 28 Apr 2021 02:42 PM PDT Hi, I want to get two powerline adapters working for my backyard. (150 meters distance) Somehow when I connect the adapters to the wallet plug I'm getting no connection overall. I have already checked the phases (three-phase), it's the same but it still won't connect. Any advice? [link] [comments]
I want to upgrade my home’s wifi setup, but I don’t know what to upgrade to. Posted: 28 Apr 2021 02:40 PM PDT So here is the context I have a Technicolor CGM4141 gateway provided by Cox as rental. It is only plugged into the internet by a cat 5 port in the wall using no coax cable at all. We are using fiber so we want to be able to use that cat 5 port and not a coax port, our problem is that I don't know if I should be plugging in something like a Netgear Nighthawk into the wall and it would work or if I would have to get a gateway instead.Photo of router Ports [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Apr 2021 10:52 AM PDT https://i.imgur.com/zdmvJlC.jpg I would appreciate advice on how to improve the setup in the image above. (I have a cabled network which has been working quite well since I followed advice I got here and went with Ubiquity.) Power and phone line arrive in the same closet in the basement. Network cables depart from there. Code forbids outlets inside the closet. The closet is in a room which will be used as a guest room, so silence and darkness would be important. Thanks a lot [link] [comments]
( Update) Loss in MoCA Speeds After Reboot Posted: 28 Apr 2021 02:27 PM PDT So I recently purchased a Ubiquiti U6 Lite to run via MoCa to my living room. Initial setup was simple, I hooked everything up with a short cable to test and got over 450mbps(as I had when I tested in a different location). The problem arose when I went to swap for a longer cable and started testing my speeds and only getting 95-100mbps. I immediately switched the cable back and was still only getting 95-100mbps to this location with dips as low as 70. Now in every location that I've tried, my MoCa adapter will only work up to that rated 90-100mbps range. Any suggestions? All speed tests come from a test directly via wire to a laptop. Update: so my speeds are actually closer to 100-120 rather than 90-100 and my port says it's at 1gbps so I'm dumbfounded. Before I used to be able to get 450 but I unplugged it once and now its gone through a 60 percent reduction in speed! [link] [comments]
Intermittent downstream connection drops during daytime hours. Posted: 28 Apr 2021 11:56 AM PDT I'm having downstream connection loss on my Spectrum connection. The modem is a Netgear CM1200. It started 1.5 weeks ago when my internet dropped on a Friday afternoon and I noticed the downstream light flashing on the modem. Long story short, no amount of reboots or troubleshooting fixed the issue. It restored itself in the early evening, and was out again the next morning. Spectrum was at my house and checked everything from the wall connection back to the tap in the ground, and said the connection was perfect, and there was almost too strong of a signal. Everything was good for about a week, and then this past Saturday morning it was out again. It came back in the late afternoon, and was fine Sunday. The past three days, it's been out during the daytime hours, and then restores itself in the early evening. Temps in my area have been on the cold side the past couple weeks, so I don't suspect an issue there. I've swapped coax cables to the wall, and changed the wall plate itself. There's no consistency in troubleshooting, but it's been mostly out all day today, with brief moments of connectivity even if the downstream light is flashing. Spectrum isn't offering much help since it's not their equipment. Here's the modem logs from this afternoon when it dropped again.

Quick question: Does it matter if I place the weaker or stronger router on the modem? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 11:34 AM PDT The cable from the modem leads upstairs to where I have a router. I bought a new router to upgrade a old acces point. The accespoint is downstairs but I was wondering. Does it matter if I place the weaker router directly on the modem and the stronger new router downstairs where now is the weak accespoint? This because I use the accespoint most and it supports wifi 6 while my other router that I want to attach to the modem does not. I got 2 Asus AC68U and one Asus AX58U (the best one I have) Should I put the AX58U on the modem and the two AC68U as accespoints or can I do one AC68U on the modem and one AC68U accespoint and one AX58U accespoint? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 11:32 AM PDT If you were to choose the weakest link in the chain of: cable modem>WiFi router>switch etc. what might it be? In other words "spend the money on X since that is important and you do t want that to be the weakest link" Ex, big speed, bad modem, great router. Or ok speed ok modem and great router. Assuming that speed is 500> 4yr old 1g cbl modem>nighthawk WiFi router. Should I get mesh6, or update my cable modem first. I get giga, but would appreciate a POV. Posted: 28 Apr 2021 05:07 PM PDT I'm moving into a shared house next weekend and fibre WiFi is included and managed by the landlord. I'm looking to create a secondary network that kinda piggybacks the shared network that I can use to access the Internet with all my devices... I've Googled extensively the best way to do this but not sure what's the best way... 1) Connect a W10 laptop to the WiFi and hotspot. 2) Use a WiFi Extender 3) Use a second router 4) Buy an Access Point I basically want to create a secondary private network just for my stuff... I dont mind spending a bit of money, I just want something painless that works... Cheers in advance. [link] [comments]
Cannot connect to host on local network via hostname Posted: 28 Apr 2021 06:29 AM PDT Hey all, I have two raspberry pi's on my network and I am having trouble diagnosing an issue where I cannot ssh to one of them via hostname. My main router is a Google WiFi puck, and I have assigned a static IP to the pi via the Google WiFi app. I have set the nameserver to the local IP of my Google Wifi router (192.168.1.1). I can ssh to and communicate with the server via the static IP address, but not the hostname. The other raspberry pi I have is running CentOS 8 with a static IP set in Google WiFi and I can ssh to it via the hostname 100% of the time. I do admit that I am more familiar with RHEL based systems as opposed to Debian based systems, so some of my issue might be there. I've put some of the information about the raspberry pi I'm having trouble with below: How can I update my configuration to be able to execute [link] [comments] |
