Found an amazing note app and an outliner app

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 03:35 AM PDT

I recently came across two apps which don't seem to be widely known here but have been excellent in my use. They are also the kind of apps that do one thing extremely well and don't ask for unnecessary permissions. That's why thought will share with the community. Also, I am in no way related to the development of these apps. One downside of both apps probably is that the backup files are not in standard/open formats.

A note taking app. Does not support lists/to-do at the moment.

What is great about this app:

    1. Minimalist design. Light/dark mode. Read/edit mode.
    2. Supports folders and one can simply swipe between them
    3. Data remains on device. You can export/import backups. No sync. However, the format of the file is .sn which I guess is proprietary.
    4. Ability to set passcode

A local and minimalist outliner app.

What is great about this app:

    1. Straightforward UI/UX. You land at a list when you open the app. No unnecessary logins/screens.
    2. Light/dark mode. Choice of different fonts.
    3. Data remains local. You can export/import backups. No sync. Again, format is .notelist which mostly is proprietary.

Hope some of you find these useful.

PSA: SoundHound has "always listening" feature activated at random intervals, even if you don't open the app

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 08:06 AM PDT

Long story short: SoundHound will listen to your voice input, even blocking access to your other voice/video recording app. It listens at random intervals for the duration of 1-2 hours non-stop.

I found out this thanks to the help of Access Dots (draw a small dot when an app listens) and DTEK by BlackBerry (pull over notification the moment does something without your permission).

    .

Some background: It began about a month ago when I kept getting notification saying "another app is using your mic", even though I already disabled permissions for most apps.

/u/skippybosco recommended Access Dots and I used DTEK, and I eventually found the culprit: SoundHound.

From quick search on this sub it seems I'm not alone. A few reviews in PlayStore also mention this. It's too bad because I liked SoundHound.

Samsung vs Google basic apps. Who makes them better?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 12:56 PM PDT

When it comes to the more basic phone apps, such as phone, messages, photos, etc, who makes the better apps when using a Samsung phone? Google or Samsung? Ive always had Samsung phones and ive kinda always been one to just stick with what came on my phone from the start, and im doing the same with my new S21 Ultra, but im wondering if im missing out by not trying googles options as well. My GF has a Pixel 3a and she seems to really like Googles apps.

Which app/games should I try from the play pass?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 12:51 PM PDT

Hi everyone, For some reason Google sent me a 1 month trial for the play pass, so I wanted to know which app should I try. Here's a list of games that I've already downloaded: https://ibb.co/W0CprKM Plus I was trying tasker and KWGT.

I'm open to try any kind of app or games since it's free and I'm curios to find new gun games or useful apps!

Premium Google Play Store apps for downloading songs?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 12:41 PM PDT

    TLTR: See last paragraph...

I've earned $40.87 from Google Opinion Rewards and need suggestions of premium apps for downloading music. (Not sure of the extent or quality of music which the free apps offer.)

Prior to the switch from Google Play Music to YouTube, I spent my Rewards "money" on songs to add to my Google Play Music library; however, since Google pulled the rug out from under my feet, I don't know where to get more music to download to my phone. (I could rant in perpetuity about Google Play Music being discontinued, but I won't do that here.)

I'm currently using a free music player app for those songs I'd previously purchased and downloaded from Google Play Music. It doesn't have the capability of adding music, though.

I'm not interested in YouTube for this purpose as I do not want to stream music. I only want to download music to play offline. While YouTube premium seems to offer this option, at $9.99 per month, it's a bit too pricey for me. Also, I'm not clear if the songs would be downloaded to my device, making them available should the app be uninstalled. (I'm not very tech-savvy.)

I've perused the Play Store for apps to download songs, but all I see are a bunch of bad reviews. Basically, what I want is something which functions as closely as possible as the now-defunct Google Play Music. Thanks in advance for any and all responses!

    Spotify creates multiple notification players

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 04:09 AM PDT

Since I got my new phone Spotify has been behaving strangely, namely it creates a new mini-player in the notification drop down every time I switch listening devices. I can swipe between these notifications and they'll show the last song I was listening too on that device, but resuming from them just resumes the regular queue. I tried force stopping the app and they still reappear every time. Does anyone know what causes this behaviour? Below is a screenshot where you can see the 4 dots below the player representing the 4 "pages".

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Looking for an app to help with working alone policies.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 11:18 AM PDT

I'm looking for a very simple app that would essentially be a timer with a built in SMS sender.

So essentially our work policy is that if you're working alone you need to message a supervisor every hour to just say "I'm alive".

I'd like to simplify that with an app that would act like an alarm. You enter the phone number to message, you enter the alarm (say one hour), then after the hour the app starts making noise to alert you to the fact it's been an hour.

If you can't deactivate the alarm in say, 1-2 minutes, it'll send an "SOS" text to the number entered. However if you do deactivate the alarm, it'll reset and send an "all good" text to the number.

Simple, basic, and no need for location services or the app creator to host a server.

Is there anything like this on the market? We're looking for a cheap and easy solution, nothing expensive with contracts and accounts.

Non Chromium web browser that doesn't make you download pdf's before reading them?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 11:11 AM PDT

I've been using Firefox religiously for years, but I have never liked the Android app for several reasons. One of the reasons is that it makes me download pdf's and read them in an external app, unlike the PC version that downloads them into a temporary folder and then erases them, or renders them in browser.

I know Chromium based browsers have this feature, but I don't really want to use Chromium. Are there any non Chromium browsers that work like this?

Way to parallel view all apps

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 10:49 AM PDT

Trying out a cardboard-like setup I tried to parallel view youtube/twitch/etc videos. Turns out my phone will slowly rotate the image away since even 2d videos have to be watched in a 3d space, and my compass/gyroscope is not operating correctly. I would like to try a split screen setup in which one app will "mirror" everything the other app is doing.

Any search I do into a mirroring or zoom app will give me mirroring to another screen or zooming the entire screen/camera stream.

Is it even possible for an app to watch part of the screen and live play it?

How to create an alert dialog initiated by a text watcher in Android Studio?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 07:12 AM PDT

Hi, I am new to android app development, and I want to add a feature into an app to create an alert dialog when the user enters a value less than 10 into an editText. If the user is entering 34, it shouldn't create a dialog after they type the 3, but it should wait until the whole value is entered. Here is what I have so far:

    editText.doAfterTextChanged() {

    //check value in editText
//create alert dialog if less than 10 with "ok" button

    }

Does anyone have any advice on how I can do this? (sample code in Kotlin would be appreciated)

I used powerFTP, but the ads are ridiculous, the workflow is nice though

    Thanks!

Edit: I'm using MiXplorer now. Thanks so much for the help everyone! Feel free to continue giving me ideas, but I don't need any

Is there an app to make selecting, copying and posting a text easier?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 05:15 AM PDT

You have a text which is 5,000 characters, you want to select all the text from character 500th to 2,500th. With the traditional way Android supports you should hold the 500th character, hold the (blue) button and move it to the 2,500th character. You know it very well and how much time it needs when the text is so long.

What is the easiest ways to select a long text? UC Browser have a convenient way to select text from web pages but I'm mostly referring to editable texts (e.g. a Google Doc file owned by you).

I'm not referring to screen scanners.

Thanks for your help in advance.
