Pixel 5 vs dedicated camera - Night sight (Computational photography)

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 01:48 PM PDT

Was curious how good Googles night sight performed vs a modern dedicated camera in terms of getting a usable Jpeg. Computational photography can do very impressive things, the stacking and long exposures are sure impressive.

This isn't a scientific test, I just thought it was interesting comparing googles night sight against a dedicated camera that has a decent IBIS to allow longer exposures handheld.

On the pixel I just shot with nightsight on, keeping the phone as steady as possible handheld.

On the camera I shot at F1.7 and altered ISO 'til I got a sub 2 second exposure (the limits of handholding without too much blur)

I'm really surprised how well the Pixel 5 did. It seemed to make the images WAY brighter than real life and in the process it amplified any noise but still created very good detail, the camera still seems the sharpest.

    Some notes before people comment:

    • It was an Olympus M43 EM5.3 camera using IBIS at F1.7 (APS-C and FF cameras can capture more light but often have less effective IBIS)
    • Without IBIS on the camera I couldn't even get a usable photo. I needed more like 1/10s to get a photo instead of the 2" I was using.
    • Again, this was just me trying to get the most usable jpeg out of each camera by hand holding.
    • I did not edit either image or use a tripod, straight out of the camera jpegs.
    • A samsung or iphone might take better night photos, not sure but Pixel is one of the best and the only phone I have.
