Regretting Web Development on Windows Because Ubuntu on Hyper-V Just Works

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 09:38 AM PST

I solved several headaches this week, spending way too much on Apple products, tinkering with my development setup to get everything to work with Windows, and tinkering with Ubuntu to get it to work with my hardware.
I was running a partition before but there is something in my hardware that is not Linux friendly and I was never able to chase it down. It also never loved my displaylink dock that I use to switch peripherals between my work Macbook and my desktop PC via thunderbolt port. There is a current bug that makes it so you need to have at least one monitor that is not over displaylink otherwise your system will run super slow. Though I did get displaylink working a few times and even bought a DSLR monitor to always have connected to the pc, I could never get Ubuntu stable for more than a week. I was also spending way too much time trying to get my workstation to work reliably rather than making money trying to build my side hustle. The life of being a noob to the OS.
After lurking here for a bit I saw the recommendation to just use a VM. This is the single best advice I got. Figuring out remoting to the VM via RDP took a little research but overall not hard.
I have been doing personal projects on Ubuntu via Hyper-V and connected via RDP so I can utilize all three monitors probably 20 hours a week for the past 4 weeks and no problems. It all just works with very little tinkering. The Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) has too many quirks to be super useful for working on a large project if your needs are small WSL might work for you. If you are a Linux Noob, I would suggest just setting up Hyper-V and installing Ubuntu and then remoting into the VM via remote desktop connection.

So I planned to distrohop back to manjaro. I had a my previous arch craft usb which I planned to flash the manjaro image. But for whatever reason my linux machine didn't pickup the usb drive. Since it was a old usb I thought it has decided to die, but just to make sure I plugged it on another machine I had which ran windows. It didn't show up in explorer but I was able to format it with diskpart. Still my machine didn't recognise it. So I typed out a full post with everything I did from start to finish elaborately. But before posting, I thought maybe I should reboot once and see if it works. As I thought it got recognised after reboot. Reboot has solved numerous wierd issues for me in the past so I decided I'll just try it once. So for new people out there, rebooting should be in your primary list of things to do if something doesn't work right. I know it's not good for every situation but most of the times it'll work. But I don't know why it didn't pick up my usb, so if anyone has any idea on the reason do let me know. I did an update before this but I don't think that would be a reason. Thanks and sorry for the shitty formatting, I'm on mobile.

Can anyone help me with this error code I'm getting in SSL Remnux?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 12:49 PM PST

I'm a cyber security student and for one of my classes we have to do some public and private key encryptions and stuff using OpenSSL commands. I got a bit into the assignment and I entered a command and got an error code that means pretty much nothing to my inexperienced brain and I was wondering if someone could MAYBE decipher it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!\

    remnux@remnux:~$ openssl rsautl -decrypt -inkey private.pem -in msg-c1 -out msg RSA operation error 140183630284096:error:0407109F:rsa routines:RSA_padding_check_PKCS1_type_2:pkcs decoding error:../crypto/rsa/rsa_pk1.c:251: 140183630284096:error:04065072:rsa routines:rsa_ossl_private_decrypt:padding check failed:../crypto/rsa/rsa_ossl.c:491:

(Also, I'm not expecting anyone to do my homework for me. I just have no idea what this code means and how to move on from it)

Any good resources for new Linux users?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 03:35 AM PST

Windows has gotten progressively nastier, so I finally took the plunge to install Linux. Horray! However, I have no idea how to use the damn thing. I know there is a lot of five-minute youtube clips where the annoying background music is almost drowned out by the narrators nasal breathing, but is there any more serious learning resources?

I have tried learning by youtube search before, but I spend too much of my resources being annoyed at poor vids, or getting distracted by cat vids or whatever. So I need something meatier, so I can focus my full attention on just learning.

I messed up my boot partition? Help!

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 01:07 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I think I deleted my boot partition so my computer won't boot, and I am also unable to fix it with boot-repair. :/

I am new to Linux and not very technical. I've been a Windows user for my whole life, but for the last 4 months I've made a switch to Linux Mint and I've been loving it. However there are some things I still cannot fully do on Linux such as make music.

This is why I decided to reinstall Windows on my second SSD and use it only for my music production hobby.

    Here's what I did:

On my second SSD I had two partitions. One partition had PopOS on them which was a test, and the other was called "System". Using the Windows installer I deleted the partition with PopOS and left the other one as was.

I formatted the "unallocated space" and tried to install Windows on it but I was getting this message: "Windows cannot be installed to this Disk. The selected Disk is of the GPT Partition Style".

I looked it up online and I followed a guide. The guide suggested to "convert MBR to GPT by reformatting the drive".

Without thinking too much about it I followed the steps and POOF! I realized everything on the drive was gone, along with the system partition! Tried installing again but I was getting some random errors and I felt the installer getting a bit unresponsive.

From that moment on, when I restart my system I am getting this:

error: file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found Entering rescue mode... grub rescue> _

I don't know what this is so atm in my eyes my computer is unusable.

The only thing I thought I'd do was to take out my boot-repair USB to see if that would fix things.

When I clicked on the recommended boot-repair it gave me this message:

GPT detected. Please create a BIOS-Boot partition (>1MB, unformatted filesystem, bios_grub flag). This can be performed via tools such as Gparted. Then try again.

I created a 2MB partition on Gparted, giving it a "boot" flag, but I was still getting the same message. I am hesitating to try anything else because I don't want to break it further.

    Here's also the pastebin:

    https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/c5qZCCTBsB/

How can I get my computer back to normal so it can dual boot with Linux and Windows?

Thank you in advance and sorry for the long post.

    Wi-Fi randomly drops out

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 10:35 AM PST

I have a dell insperon 3505 on Arch Linux. Sometimes, very randomly, the wifi drops out, there is no obvious indication at first that this has happened, I notice first because programs stop being able to access the internet. After a little while, sometimes it'll start working, or if it stops working for a really long time, gnome starts putting a question mark on the wi-fi symbol as if it disconnected. In journalctl I get this

    3月 03 17:46:54 Lo-Laptop-Arch kernel: ath10k_pci 0000:03:00.0: device successfully recovered

    3月 03 17:46:53 Lo-Laptop-Arch kernel: ieee80211 phy0: Hardware restart was requested

    3月 03 17:46:39 Lo-Laptop-Arch wpa_supplicant[572]: wlan0: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-FAILED ret=-110

    once I even got

    3月 03 17:45:47 Lo-Laptop-Arch kernel: ath10k_pci 0000:03:00.0: AMD-Vi: Event logged [IO_PAGE_FAULT domain=0x000b address=0x0 flags=0x0020]

only once though. I've searched a lot online, I've tried setting a different name for the device in /etc/udev/rules.d/, that didn't work, a lot of people say try turning off wifi powersave, however not only does the file /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf not exist on my computer, and trying to search for wifi powersave always only brings up this method, when using iwconfig, it says that powersave is off. What do I do now? I can't reliabily test it because I can't re-produce it even myself, but it's extremely annoying as I'm in online lessons and it just drops out.

How do hotkeys work in linux?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 04:11 AM PST

I've download deepin-screenshot and struggle to bring it up via it's hotkeys. My questions are:

    1. Why do those hotkeys not work for me after downloading the tool (i can trigger it via the GUI)
    2. Where in general do linux hotkeys "live" in? Is there an interface that shows all my possible hotkeys?

Having trouble getting gaming to work properly on my fresh Manjaro install.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 09:20 AM PST

After messing around in a Linux VirtualBox on Windows 10 for a few weeks, I decided that I wanted to give it a try as my primary OS. I settled on Manjaro, since it seems to be quite popular and also beginner-friendly.

The computer is a Razer Blade 15" Base model with an RTX 2060M, and an intel i7-10750H. I've seen other people on Reddit say that they've been able to install Manjaro on the exact same model, and also have it run games smoothly.

I have been able to install the OS, correctly install nvidia drivers (at least, i think), fully update the system, properly reorder mirrors, and essentially all the other basic stuff just fine. However, CS:GO, the game ideal game I'd like to run, only gets about 30FPS on the start menu, and like 5FPS in a match.

Also, I've had to reinstall the OS 3 times now because rebooting after installing nvidia-drivers always prevents me from booting into KDE, and I can't figure out how to fix things from TTY yet.

I'm going to do a completely fresh install again. If anyone is able to help walk me through this to get it working, I would greatly appreciate it. I refuse to give up on Linux
