    Google chrome hangs on reboot/shutdown

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 05:15 PM PDT

I've spent quite some time trying to solve the issue myself, but I could use some help in tracking down whether this is an issue that is inherent in Chrome or whether it is something I can fix myself.

I've outlined the nature of the issue here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1964522#p1964522

This bug may also be relevant: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=39106&q=sigkill&can=2

Using dd to clone the system.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:28 AM PDT

Hi all, i am trying to use dd to clone the system. I have linux mint on my older computer and I wanna move everything( every setting, every software etc) to new computer, like the exact copy of the older one so that i can plug that cloned SSD to new computer and use it with the same settings and OS. I am not sure, if i only copy the file and folder or just make the exact clone of the system, so I can plug new ssd, clone it and boot it from the different computer. I have never done it before, so i am curious. I found other tool like clonezilla but dd looks to be interesting, because It can be done without installing anything extra.

    Thank you

    Going back To windows !!!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 03:23 PM PDT

Hello , So I recently wanted to dip my toes onto Linux and see if I could try it for a couple of days , I installed Mint Cinnamon and Zorin Os . the PC I used is very old. So the experience was choppy. it's used mainly for web browsing , I wanted to try Win 10 on it , But whenever I go to the setup to choose a partition I get the "we couldn't create partition..." Error I have 2 partition and both are "Logical". I guess you can't install win on Logical partition so I tried diskpart and no luck. I flashed Mint onto a usb and went to it's disk manager and changed the partition format to NTFS , went back to Win installation same error , I'm suspecting the problem with it's type being Logical , How can I change it to Primary ? The other partition has My data on it so I can't format the Whole drive

UPDATE : Upon more research , in Gparted there's a small 1.5mb partition made as primary and I can't delete it , and then there's the C partition (Unallocated) , When I create a partition the Primary Option is grayed out ????

Ubuntu dual boot: Screen stuck on ¨ clean, files, blocks¨

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 02:22 PM PDT

I have an Acer Swift 3 with dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04. However, recently, whenever I try to boot on Ubuntu, I am stuck on a black screen with a message that says:

    /dev/nvme0n1p5: clean, 387433/16515072 files, 62797726/66049024 blocks

If it helps, my disk storage on the ubuntu side was already running out of space by the time this happened.

I cannot get past this into Ubuntu. Could someone please help?

Passwordless SSH to Linux from Windows Terminal?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 02:02 PM PDT

Heya! I am trying to simplify my 3 different Linux machines by not having it ask a password. I am unable to get it to allow me to login without a password. :/

One of them had Dropbear installed, but I converted it to OpenSSH so that location should be default root/.ssh instead of etc/Dropbear as I understand it.

Here are the steps I've done:

    Windows 10 machine: installed Win32-OpenSSH (version OpenSSH_for_Windows_8.1p1, LibreSSL 2.9.2)

    1. ssh-keygen (generate default keys, with default name, no pass phrase e.g. id_rsa & id_rsa.pub files)
    2. type C:\Users\USERNAME\.ssh\id_rsa.pub | ssh [root@](mailto:root@192.168.1.3)SERVERIP "mkdir -p ~/.ssh && chmod 700 ~/.ssh && cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys && chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys" (copy over my generated public key and set permissions on the server I want to SSH without password)
    3. Reboot server I'm trying to SSH into
    4. ssh -vvv [root@](mailto:root@192.168.1.3)SERVERIP -i C:\Users\USERNAME\.ssh\id_rsa
    5. Not profit ;( (still asks for password)

The log is very verbose with -vvv but I can paste it if necessary. Just wondering if I'm overlooking a critical step first? Thanks for reading!

Pop!_OS on laptop not booting without external monitor

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 05:09 AM PDT

After installing Pop!_OS 20.10 I encountered a boot issue (previous post), so I decided to go with the 20.04 version, but I still have problems booting into the OS. The OS is installed on a completely wiped drive only containing Pop!_OS.

The issue is that I can't get the laptop to boot normally and get to the encryption password screen. But the thing is the laptop boots normally if I have it connected to an external monitor, and works fine after I unplug the HDMI cable. I tried using xrandr to configure the display as suggested in an older post but with no luck.

I have also tried switching the LoDPI /HiDPI toggles on and off in various tests but nothing changed.

Laptop specs : i7 6500u, 8GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 520 No dedicated GPU, native screen resolution 1920x1080

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Problems with laptop drivers on various distros

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 12:18 PM PDT

Hey there! Not necessarily a noob, but I figured this would be a good place to ask for support.

I'm trying to revive an old HP dv6503eo laptop and I'm facing a few issues when trying out a bunch of Linux distros on it. These issues are mostly related to either the wireless card (bcm4311), the integrated Geforce 7150M, or both.

Here's what happened with some of these installs:

    • Linux Lite seems to be the only one playing nicely with the wireless card (from among the ones I've tested), but it would boot with graphical glitches after installation.
    • Distros that preinstall the proprietary Nvidia graphics (like Pop_OS!) don't have these graphical glitches, but don't allow me to set the resolution to the laptop's 16:10 aspect ratio
    • Manjaro won't even boot in proprietary driver mode, and booting with the open sourced ones would give me the same graphical glitches
    • Mint works in a live session through compatibility mode, but it would boot with graphical glitches after installation. Wireless card doesn't work either.
    • W10 would detect the wireless card just fine, but gets me a transparent UI glitch when installing anything that isn't the generic display drivers. (Needless to say, I wouldn't want to run that on this poor little toaster - even if I could mitigate that issue.)

I'd appreciate any help on how to get both components working, or any insight on distros that would have them working out of the box. Thanks in advance!

Trouble Creating Bootable Clone Of Linux HDD With Windows 10

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 11:55 AM PDT

I'm a Linux noob and I'm running into difficulty with cloning a Linux based boot drive from a HDD to a smaller SSD.

    - This a Golden Tee 2020 Arcade drive which is Linux based. The source drive is 500GB with roughly 400GB unused. I want to clone the written partitions to a 120gb SSD which provides enough space.

    - Upon booting the new disk, I just get a blinking cursor in the upper left and nothing else.

    - Since the computer used to boot the drive auto-runs and boots to game, I'm trying to use Windows 10 to clone the drive. I've tried EASEUS, Macrium Reflect and a couple others to no avail. The data is on the cloned drive but no boot.

    - I've done this successfully numerous times on Windows but never going to a smaller SSD so I'm not sure where my problem(s) lie.

Any help is much appreciated! Thanks

Strange error tyring to configure sftp on Debian 9 - Login pass being rejected but I confirmed it is correct

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 11:08 AM PDT

i'm trying to setup an sftp account w/chroot on my Debian 9 file server.

    Here's what I did:I create a new file structure

    /var/www/ftp/upload

I create a new group called sshusers
I created a new user account called ftpuser

    # groupadd sshusers # useradd -g sshusers -d /var/www/ftp ftpuser

    /var/www/ftp is owned by root:root
    /var/www/ftp/upload is owned by ftpuser:sshusers

    $ ls -l total 8 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Mar 30 11:50 ftp $ ls -l ftp total 4 drwxr-xr-x 2 ftpuser sshusers 4096 Mar 30 11:51 uploads

I setup a simple password for ftpuser and then I tried to switch users

$ su ftpuser Password: $ whoami ftpuser

I then updated my /etc/ssh/sshd_config file and made the following changes

#Subsystem sftp /usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server Subsystem sftp internal-sftp Match group sshusers ChrootDirectory %h X11Forwarding no AllowTcpForwarding no PasswordAuthentication yes ForceCommand internal-sftp PubkeyAuthentication no

    I then restarted sshd.service

    # systemctl restart sshd.service # systemctl status sshd.service ● ssh.service - OpenBSD Secure Shell server Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/ssh.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled) Active: active (running) since Tue 2021-03-30 12:04:10 MDT; 3s ago Process: 1037 ExecReload=/bin/kill -HUP $MAINPID (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Process: 1032 ExecReload=/usr/sbin/sshd -t (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Process: 1973 ExecStartPre=/usr/sbin/sshd -t (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Main PID: 1976 (sshd) Tasks: 1 (limit: 4915) CGroup: /system.slice/ssh.service └─1976 /usr/sbin/sshd -D

    Everything looks good.

When I try to log in using Filezilla, I encounter the following problem

Response: fzSftp started, protocol_version=9 Command: open "ftpuser@192.168.10.12" 22 Command: Trust new Hostkey: Yes Command: Pass: ****** Error: Authentication failed. Error: Critical error: Could not connect to server

I have changed my password on the ftpuser account a few times now. I am able to su into the user with the password but filezilla keeps rejecting the connection. I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

    Can someone please advise?

I installed Zorin OS on my flash drive, using a VM ISO and installed it on the drive. I can properly boot to the OS if its on my PC, but I can't boot if I am using a different PC.

Someone helped me earlier in our community, that installing GRUB on flash drive might help, but I could not find it, and I am new to Linux. Any help is appreciated.
