Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1500 US, unless there's a major reliability/performance upgrade at $1600 Are you open to refurbs/used? Not with my track record. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance and build quality are top 2. Battery life is a plus. How important is weight and thinness to you? I'm replacing a 5.3 lb gaming laptop, I'm used to heft. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" or 17.3" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing in Photoshop, video editing in DaVinci Resolve, Gaming (Overwatch, Rocket League, FFXIV mostly) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I was playing Rocket League/Overwatch/FFXIV nearly on max, so staying close to that is good Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Has to have a 10-key (non-negotiable, too much data entry), needs to be durable enough to last through most of grad school, good keyboard would be nice because I'll be writing a dissertation on it, don't need/want touch screen. HDMI port for dual monitor capabilities is a necessity. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Am having to replace an ASUS ROG with an RTX 2070, so I kind of need to stay in a similar performance range, but would rather have something with less crappy thermals if possible, this thing ALWAYS ran hot. I also have crap luck with ASUS (this is my 2nd to die right after extended warranty) and HP, so actively avoiding them.

    HP ENVY x360 - AFFORDABLE 13'' BEAST

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 03:55 AM PDT

    Hi,

I do not even know where to start. I will try to explain my struggle first and then move on to the topic. So I had a laptop Lenovo G series ( i3-5005U, 2GHz, Intel HD graphics 5500, 8GB Ram) for almost 6 years. It is still good, but hinges has broken. So I decided maybe it is time for new laptop. I am still student at University, but I do also work in the logistics company. So I wanted something light, reliable, portable (13'') - ultrabook - but also from time to time I would like to do some light gaming - big fan of AoE2DE and Rimworld - so iOS is off the table.

I was so convinced to get Dell XPS13 (2020), but when I have seen some videos and red some articles where, people are complaining about heat issues/overheating. I have stepped back from this device immediately, there is no way I am buying laptop that starts at 1400e which will have issues with cooling and could not go to sleep/save mode after you close him. I would like to mention that some people did not experienced this issues at all. But it is a HIT or MISS situation.

I did not wanted to buy anything from ACER or ASUS either, I am bit skeptical about those two companies. I did liked a lot Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano, but it starts at 1600e in my country. Unfortunately :( and also Lenovo ThinkPad X13, but also I would not have specs that I do have for much lower price.

So I was little bit stuck between HP Spectre x360 and HP Envy x360. But when I have seen reviews and benchmarks. It was decided. Envy won in every category for me.

So I decided to go with HP Envy x360, oh boy I can not express how happy I am to get laptop in that price range to have these specs.

    - AMD Ryzen 7 4700U, touch display 13.3" IPS - 400 nits, 1920 × 1080, RAM 16GB DDR4, AMD Radeon Vega 7, SSD 512GB - you can upgrade your SSD card if 512GB is not enough for you. I will probably upgrade it, because of games that takes a lot of space.

Apart from specs, it is unbelievable experience, laptop does weight 1,3kg. Keyboard is nice to feel, touchpad is very responsive. 16GB of ram does provide smooth browsing and editing of some videos. No stutters. You can flip him to tablet mode because it is 2in1, convertible laptop. You will receive also pen, which is helpful for people that would like to draw. Speakers, Bang & Olufsen, great sound in overall. Fingerprint reader is nice feature as well.

Huge percentage of laptops do have Intel processor with also integrated Intel Graphic Card. I can tell you from my personal experience, AMD is a game changer - why? Because it was able to achieve similar or even better (in some cases) performance for less money than Intel.

Thanks for reading, feel free to ask questions.

Laptop for Designer (by day) and aspiring Streamer (by night) / US / ~$1500+

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 11:50 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1500+ and happy to wait 1-2 mo. for sales (open to your suggestions!)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Not now.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
High- to medium-quality build sounds great (but not mandatory)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not very important.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6"+
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?
Yes, I work in Adobe Suite, and since I'm getting into streaming + gaming online and (potentially) into video editing my own streams, I probably need a laptop that can multitask :)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Death Stranding, Assassin´s Creed Valhalla, Escape from Tarkov, etc.Would prefer to play in a streamable, high-quality settings.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality sounds great. Would prefer a nicer quality screen for my design work as I'll be transferring from Macbook Pro but I have external monitors too!
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I know only popular laptop brands so I'm thinking about Alienware m15 R4 or Razer Blade 15 but these are some questions where I need your perspectives: a) Do I need RTX 30 + or RTX 2070 with Max-Q 8GB GDDR6 is fine?; b) 16 GB RAM or 32 GB RAM? 512 GB or more?; c) What are the not so mainstream machines that could possibly match Razer and Dell and could save some $$$ here and there? Or the build is not that good?
    • Thank you sooo much, ya'll!!!

    College laptop 1500-1700 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
performance first thinking of an i7 or ryzen equivalent and a 1650 is also okay, battery life second (at least 5-7 hours), strong build quality.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Under 5 lbs preferably
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

At least 2 USB A ports, USB c would be nice, and HDMI is a must. reliable build quality is also preferred.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Take into consideration the longetivity of the laptops and if it is known to not last at least 2 years or more I don't think I would consider it. Also 4k isn't really needed since it drains battery but if the best ones are only in 4k id like to see them.

15 inch Laptop to be used for regular zoom meetings and desktop use through thunderbolt ~$1000 USD

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 03:26 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    ~$1000 USD or less

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

This will almost always be used at a desk with semi-regular portable use. Build quality > performance > battery

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not too heavy would be nice, thinness is not really important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Somewhere around 15 inches, it will be used by people with poor eyesights so the larger screen will make a difference.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

This computer is going to be replacing a desktop that should only be performing light computing tasks like email and document editing, although I would like it to be able to run a 4k monitor if possible.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/a

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Solid build quality, as well as nice keyboard and touchpad would be nice. Must have thunderbolt support as I am planning to use it in place of a desktop using a thunderbolt dongle.,

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The goal is to use this in place of a desktop by using a thunderbolt dongle to connect it to power, monitors and existing peripherals and then have the ability to use it portable for zoom meetings in other rooms as well as perhaps some online school work. Does not need to be overly powerful but I would like something that will not "slow down" for a few years to come

What’s the best gaming laptop I can buy for less than $1500 USD?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 02:41 AM PDT

I would also like to know about how loud these get because it will be my first time buying one. And are there any specifications about monitor compatibility because I plan on using an external monitor and KBM. I want something with an AMD but intel would work too. I want to be able to stream on it with an external monitor on it as well on twitch. I will be playing games like Valorant, Apex, and LoL.

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Good performance, good battery life, build quality. I want standard clamshell laptop and no need for touch screen either.

CS student laptop (budget $1500 or so)

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 09:34 PM PDT

Hey guys, I've decided it might be time for a new laptop. My desktop is proving to be way too cumbersome to move in and out of the dorm, and it turns out some laptops are actually more powerful in terms of hardware nowadays.

I'm looking to do some mid-tier gaming, maybe some rendering and plenty of coding. Ideally, I'd like something with at least a 1660ti but not something with a "gaming" aesthetic.

I'm not really particular about extra bells and whistles like fingerprint readers, touch screens or the way the keyboard feels.

Hopefully there is something within this price range, but I'm a little flexible there too. Thanks a lot!

    Gaming Laptop ~1000 USD

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 09:16 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: My budget is ~$1000 but if somebody knows about a good laptop for less than that that'll get the job done then I'm all for it.

Are you open to refurbs/used? No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Having good performance at the cost of battery life is okay, I don't plan on having it off the charger very much.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is a non factor, it could be made of bricks if it does what I need it to do haha.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Something around 15.6 is fine.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming mostly, not really doing any video/photo editing.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I mostly play Civilization and various party games with friends on steam that are pretty easy to run. If it can run civ 6 at a stable 60 fps late in the game then I'll be satisfied.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Having a numpad us pretty much the only specific requirement I need.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thank you for your help and suggestions! Like I mentioned early although my budget is 1k I'm open to spending less than that if it meets my needs without going overboard.

Just got accepted into college for Engineering! Haven't bought a laptop in 10+ years...

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 05:14 PM PDT

Hello r/SuggestALaptop! This is my first time posting, so I sincerely apologize if I sound like an overly-needy an hyper-specific shopper who wants everything in one package! I haven't bought a nice laptop in so many years that I have no clue what the current state of tech looks like, so any suggestions and tips are welcome!

So... big news. I just got accepted into Texas A&M's College of Engineering! I'm going to be moving across the country to attend this school and I've also been saving up for years for this moment, so I have a budget of around $3,000 to work with. I've owned a couple of laptops, mostly for work, but I'm going to need a computer for school as a course requirement.

My life philosophy has always been to save money but spend it where it matters. With more and more of life slowly transitioning to the virtual world, I feel like a quality laptop is something that can contribute enormously to someone's performance, productivity, and overall happiness while working. I'm not nearly educated enough to make this decision on my own, so thank you everybody for helping a friend out!

A&M has a portal for buying laptops through their preferred dealer, I'll post the models and prices below as I have no idea whether the deals are actually any good or not. I'm not limited to the list that they recommend, however, as there is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program.

I love typing and the first thing I notice about any laptop is the keyboard and trackpad. When at home, I plan on setting up a workstation with some nice peripherals, but a quality keyboard and trackpad are an absolute must. I'd prefer a screen over 13", as I've tried reading electrical schematics on that size of screen and although doable, it's incredibly painful. I will need a built-in webcam and microphone, but the quality of those isn't super important (and I think that almost all laptops have those included nowadays).

I suspect that most of my work will be a combination of writing documents (Office 365), internet browsing, programming with Anaconda (python) and Pycharm. One of my hobbies is recording music and I plan on getting started learning a DAW like Ableton Live.

    Without further ado, le form:

    The Form

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:$3,000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?A good keyboard and trackpad is a must.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?I'm not picky, as long as the laptop isn't a chonky-boy.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.13"+
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.For school I'll be doing some light/moderate programming. I suspect CAD will eventually come later. For personal use, I want to do some casual audio editing with a DAW.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Gaming not a priority :(
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?A good keyboard - I'll probably be doing a lot of writing for essays and note taking. I love typing and I absolutely love my mechanical keyboard for my desktop.I was spoiled by my 2008 Macbook Pro's trackpad and how accurate it was. I'd love to have that level of control again in a new laptop.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This is my first laptop purchase in years and I would love to keep this machine as long as I can! A relatively future-proof laptop would be ideal and I'm no stranger to opening up computers to upgrade storage and memory.

A&M has the following requirements for a laptop:

    Minimum laptop requirements:

    Intel i7 or i9 processor

    16 GB of RAM

    512 GB storage system

    Discrete graphics card

    Webcam

Note: Chromebooks, iPad, and similar devices do not meet the operating system and hardware requirements to run engineering applications.

Here is a list of machines that are recommended by the school and through the student portal I can get a "special price." And holy cow, I had no idea when making this list that the information would be so sparse, but hopefully this information is remotely useful? If I can attach more information for these models, let me know and I'll do my best!

Macbook pro Replacement for Amateur Photo editing, and light work

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 12:45 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around £800, can go a bit more

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Refurbs yes, used no.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance and build quality most important

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not the priority

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13/14 inches if possible

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Will be used for Autocad (and possibly Revit) I use Capture 1 20 for photo editing and have a reasonably sized catalogue Will be used otherwise for day to day stuff

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I would err on the side of having more storage space, looking at 1TB. I'm unsure abour RAM as I had thought that 16GB was a baseline that you wanted to hit for future proofing, but it seems a majority of machines have 8GB.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm coming from a Macbook Pro that I have had now for 6 years, so longevity is important for me. Happy to spend more for a machine that will last a reasonable amount of time.

    Thanks!

eta: The machine that I currently used was configured with a 500GB HDD and 4GB RAM when I bought it, and I upgraded these myself, so I am comfortable with a machine that is upgradable either now or in the future if the configuration I have in mind isn't readily available

Help me choose between these two laptops (or recommend something better)

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 12:19 AM PDT

I'm thinking of getting the dell Inspiron 3000 ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08NQ1VX6Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_8WAZAVYETG946MWV113A?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 ) or Lenovo idea pad ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B088FVRD95/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_4DGE090H8B61RTDQMWZB?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 ). I need a laptop that can handle a few apps at the same time without getting ridiculously slow (discord, figma, webflow, zoom). Both of these seem like good options but I've also seen some bad reviews.

Looking for a laptop that can handle gaming, schooling, and some music production as well. (USA, $1000 and under)

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 11:44 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

1000 USD, can be a bit higher but only slightly.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I would want the performance first. I would want the build quality to be quite good, and a great battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thinness isn't as important to me as weight is. Weight is very important to me.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14-17 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I am most likely going to run The Sims 3 or 4, Stardew Valley, and Minecraft. I also desire to run a program used for music production such as Ableton Live. I might be using some school programs as well.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not sure, but I'd want things to run smoothly with no/minimal lag. A decent amount of memory, good resolution. And a good/decent frame rate.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Decent keyboard, audio/headphone jack, easily portable. 8 GB RAM is the minimum that I would want, and 16 GB RAM is the maximum.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I guess I can summarize it. So I travel from one house to another so I'd want my laptop to be easily portable. I'd want things to run smoothly so minimal to no lag. I do live in the United States, however not in the Continental USA. So I'd want the laptop to be from a company that I am familiar with such as Amazon. My budget is $1000, however it can be a bit higher but not too high.

    Looking forward for your suggestions

LF Laptop with good, long-lasting battery life (Budget ~800SGD, Singapore)

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 11:23 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Budget around 800SGD, buying in Singapore.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life and performance is the most important. Will mainly be using this laptop to take online classes at a location that may not have much charging points. Looking for a battery that can last >10hours preferably. Of course, good build quality is also appreciated.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not very important.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Maybe very light photoshop/video editing and gaming but can do without as well, because I use my desktop for that.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Would like a laptop with good build quality to last a couple years at least. And also a battery that will not deteriorate in charge too much after long use.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Side note: have not had good experience with Dell brand in general, so can leave out those options

    Thanks! :)

    Need suggestions for a laptop

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 11:59 AM PDT

Well as the title says I'm looking for a new laptop, and my price range is $800 max, aiming for $700. Overall I know that isn't a lot of money for one. Overall this laptop won't be for gaming, it's mainly to use to load pictures up from a camera I use, and to look at them, and such. Also the laptop will likely be used for web browsing, and maybe a bit of watching Netflix, and video services like that.

I have personally did a little bit of looking yesterday, but there's a lot of options out there, and I don't want to buy something that's junk, and has some issues that are annoying to deal with. So I'm hoping someone on here, who deals with laptops regularly, might be able to suggest some laptops, that fit my need, and within my price range. I appreciate any help, and comments.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Max $800, aiming for $700
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Looking for new laptop
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Honestly just want something that's not complete junk. I know at my price range, performance won't be super high.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Honestly not a super big deal, but it being on the lighter side is always a plus.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Will be used to load up pictures from my camera to go over, and such.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Not aiming for any gaming on this laptop.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would prefer something that's reliable in terms of build quality.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Not really, posted above, on what I am looking for, and my needs.

    Good Gaming Laptop / US / $1000 ~ $1500

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 01:24 PM PDT

Hello! I have a laptop for school that's okay, but I would prefer to actually be able to play games on it with friends. Thanks to the stimulus, I can actually upgrade to a better one, but I need more info, so any help is appreciated!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1,000 - $1,500 USD willing to pay up to ~$1,500 but that's the MAX so if possible something closer to ~$1,200

Are you open to refurbs/used? Depending on the laptop, but new preferred (less of a hassle)

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance > Battery Life (at least around 5 hours unplugged? If that's good) > Build Quality

How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't really matter as long as I can slip it into a backpack

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-15.6 inches, possibly 17

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly gaming (valorant, overwatch, Sims 4, forest, phasmophobia, genshin impact, etc.) + video editing (Adobe) + drawing (paint tool sai, photoshop, gimp, etc.)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Same games as above, no lag with good HD graphics, 60 fps etc. (looking for nividia 2060+, 16gb+ ram)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? RGB back-lit keyboard is one of the goals here! They're cool. Needs a decent/good Webcam too. At least 1tb of storage ssd/hdd/hybrid is fine

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This is gonna be my go-to for a few years so I want good enough specs and space to last until then. I found the Dell g7 and HP Omen on the higher side and the Lenovo Legion 5 on the lower side, but if anyone knows any other good ones in the budget, I'd really appreciate it!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1000 - flexible on price (open to cheaper options and probably up to $1300)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes - Probably only refurbished from an OM
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      • Build quality/performance
      • Battery life
      • Good touch pad
      • Portability
      • Don't care at all about 2 in 1 or touchscreen
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I would prefer lightweight, but not critical to be ultra thin. But a benefit for sure.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Ideally 15 inch
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • Maybe light gaming
        • Civ Games
        • Halo maybe
        • Modern Warfare (possible but not prioritizing gaming laptops)
      • Heavy document processing and lots of docs open at once
        • I'm an attorney and use WorkShare comparisons and other documents processing features a lot
      • Excel modeling
        • Light modeling for financial models
      • Internet browsing
        • Streaming video
        • Lots of tabs
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      • Possible games might include Civilization, Halo, Modern Warfare, Age of Empires
      • Don't really know regarding settings and FPS
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • Good keyboard with full number pad if possible
      • Reliable build quality and great touchpad
      • USB C is a must and having a few regular USB ports would be good
      • Camera in top middle and higher quality would be nice
      • Don't care about fingerprint or touch screen or 2 in 1
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      • I've had a Dell XPS 13 in past and hated the fact that the camera was bottom left and that my finger pad stopped responding well. I want a computer that is going to be good build and wont breakdown too fast.
      • I like running multiple programs at once (word, excel, browsing, etc) so maybe quad core??

My laptop KO'd. Not sure what's on the market for light gaming and web dev programming.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 09:24 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 1, 200 USD.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I prefer performance first, with a solid battery life (at least easily upgradable), and solid build quality. Form factor is also important, but not a deal breaker.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thinness isn't a big deal, however I don't want to hulk around something heavy.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Around 14-15.6 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'd use it occasionally for gaming and Photoshop. However, I'd mainly use it for web browsing, Netflix, and light programing (MySQL, Javascript, etc.)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'd like to be able to play games such as Hades, Overwatch and Dota 2 on medium to high settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

It should have a durable keyboard and have reliable build quality. Touch screen isn't the end -all-be-all. My work laptop and monitor take up a lot of space on my desk, so being able to easily use it on a couch, bed and overall mobility is ideal. It should have at least 8 GB of RAM and must have SSD. It would be nice if it had HDMI and USB-C.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Some devices that peek my curiosity:

    • Dell XPS 15: A bit expensive, but it's nice to see it has FHD and a screen ratio of 16:9.

    • Lenovo Legion 5: I like how the AMD runs with a 144hz screen. It also has a good thermal system and an upgradable battery option.
