Nearly every device in my house wakes up at 3:20am and phones home (or somewhere) Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:17 AM PDT Looking at my DNS logs, I see that DNS traffic largely drops off in the evening as the whole family get off devices, shut down and heads to bed. A steady drumbeat of a few devices checking time, updates, etc. Then suddenly at 3:20am, nearly every device in the household wakes up and starts hitting DNS. Variety of devices and manufacturers including Windows, iDevices, Macs, Alexa Dots, Playfi gear, ZoneDirector, you name it. Is that like the Network Witching Hour? Edit for a pic: https://imgur.com/a/6JifkaM Edit Looks like a one off fluke (added 7 day graph to IMGUR). I am going to ignore it. [link] [comments] |
Replaced a UniFi nanoHD with a TP-Link EAP245 Posted: 30 Mar 2021 05:06 PM PDT I posted last week in this subreddit about some challenges I had with my MacBook Pro randomly losing connectivity with my WiFi - even though it still showed fully connected. I had a fantastic response from one user in particular with some recommendations to improve it, but sadly they didn't help. The suspicion was some kind of incompatibility between my MacBook Pro and the nanoHD access point. So, I decided to replace the UniFi nanoHD with a TP-Link Omada device as I'd heard / read good things about those. I settled on the TP-Link EAP245 for ~$100 as we only have ~20 devices and none of them support WiFi 6 so the EAP265 HD and EAP6xx series devices wouldn't be worth the extra money to me. It arrived today and installation was pretty painless - I'd say easier than the UniFi. I set up the Omada software controller running in a Docker container reverse proxied by Traefik, but being able to directly manage the access point made setting the management VLAN a little easier! We'll have to see if this fixes my issues with the MacBook Pro, but so far I'm impressed. The EAP245 supports up to 16 SSIDs (8 on 2.4GHz and 8 on 5GHz) but otherwise these devices are pretty comparable as far as the relevant specs to me are concerned. I use OPNsense for my firewall so I'm not deeply invested in the UniFi ecosystem (eg no UDM or USG, etc), and especially given UniFi's recent move to place the ad in the controller software, this feels like a good option for me. Just sharing in case others are on the fence. [link] [comments] |
Need help with powerline adapter Posted: 30 Mar 2021 07:52 AM PDT Due to how my house is built and whatnot, putting the router near my computer is impossible for now. It's more expensive than buying a powerline atleast, so that's what i did. I got myself the TL-WPA4226 and I've informed myself about it, it has 10/100 ports, but I have some questions First, I got a 500mbps contract, I realize I won't ever get the 500mbps but can I not reach higher with this powerline adapter? I don't know if 10/100 means I'm limited to 100mbps honestly and I have no idea if powerlines will ever actually go over, say, 200mbps. If I get a gigabit link powerline adapter, will I be able to get more than 100mbps? Right now, with 100mbps full duplex I get around 92-94mbps which is pretty decent for what its advertised, but I am wondering if I can make it higher? Even with only 10/100 ports? Should I return this one and buy a gigabit link one? Thanks. UPDATE: got an AV1000 and managed to get 145mbps and got 30€ back, thanks everyone. [link] [comments] |
How to get internet conection to a house in a rural area? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 02:07 PM PDT Hello, there. Me and my SO are moving to a rural area. The house we are renting doesn't have internet. Our neighbors, who happen to be my SO's relatives as well as landlords, together with the rest of the village, have fiber connection installed. When it was being installed, nobody was living in the house we're moving into, therefore, the landlord didn't think to pay the expenses for installing it. What we are trying to figure out now is what our best course of action would be in order to get a stable internet connection in our new home. We have contacted the provider about connecting to fiber network (the terminal seems to be around 100m away from the house) and we are still waiting for an answer from them. We are afraid that it might be too expensive to do that. Is there a way to figure out how much it would cost? Not asking for any details but in case anyone has any experience with this. We got offered to do WiFi enhancers so we get the internet from our landlord's house but we're afraid that we will have spikes and losses. I work online and our main hobby is online video games so we are looking for a stable connection. The two houses are around 50 meters apart from each other. We were even thinking of dragging the ethernet cable from one house to the other but are worried if the length of it would also cause problems to the stability, or whether it would even work. We also started reading about point to point wireless but are worried about bad weather affecting it (very thick snowstorms happen throughout the very long winters there) and we also don't know how stable those are. We basically don't know a lot about them. The speed of the landlord's internet is 100/100mbps. What do you think is our best course of action? What would you do if you were in our situation? Is there any other way we could do this that we didn't think about? Thank you for any help. :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Mar 2021 04:36 PM PDT Hey all, I got my Netgear Wi-Fi 6e router, RAXE500. The LED for All three bands 2.4G, 5G, and 6G are lit. And I set up a password for all three bands. I use a ASUS z590E motherboard with Wi-Fi 6E capability And on another computer I use an external Intel module AX210. But for some reason on either of my computers I can't seem to find the 6gh band. Is there anyone on here have experience with Wi-Fi 6e? I've talked to Netgear for hours with their support service and they can't seem to figure it out they keep telling me they'll call me back with a solution. And obviously they never do. Posted: 30 Mar 2021 06:42 PM PDT Hey everyone, Just got a brand new R6400 router for free. I currently have xfinity 100 mbps and am looking to upgrade to at least 200. I am renting a router/modem combo from xfinity and want to buy a modem to eliminate the need for renting so I can upgrade at basically no additional cost to what I'm paying now. I don't know much about modems, so don't know what would be a great modem to pair with this new router. Please let me know of recommendations! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Mar 2021 06:18 PM PDT My internet connection has been fine for a good 5 months. Last night I started experiencing lots of packet loss, and drop in speeds. My download dropped from 450 to under 100, and my upload speeds dropped from 30 down to .25. I called my ISP, and they told me the signal was fine, and that I should contact the modem manufacturer. The modem manufacturer told me that my upstream power levels are out of acceptable range, and that I should contact my ISP. My ISP is sending out a tech tomorrow to look at things. I don't know what any of this really means, any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Use one ethernet cable for two networks? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 12:53 PM PDT Hey all, I've tried searching but cannot find anything and maybe it's not possible.Basically I only one ethernet cable going from 1st to 2nd floor switch and I'm using OpenWRT to connect to other wireless network for failover but due to distance sometimes it disconnects sometimes. My question is there a way using existing cable to bring connection down to the switch? 1st floor switch has VLAN but I never set it up. 2nd floor is plain switch. Is it possible to accomplish this with buying another VLAN switch? Here's the diagram: [link] [comments] |
Inquiring about mesh wifi for future home Posted: 30 Mar 2021 04:59 PM PDT Hi everybody, I will be moving into a home in the near future and as there are no fiber internet options servicing the location, I was hoping to get wifi mesh suggestions to use alongside an Xfinity subscription. The home is 3 stories (ground floor is first floor), ~2400 sq. ft., I am considering the 200mbps download speed Xfinity deal. I currently have a modem (arris surfboard sb6183) and router (Netgear N900 wireless dual band gigabit router) that I bought on my own to use with Xfinity in my apartment. I know that in the future home, there are 3 devices I would want with a physical connection (two personal computers, and a gaming console due to streaming purposes), which would be on different floors from each other. I did a quick search and saw this suggested wifi mesh recommended. Are there any other suggestions on hardware to look into, or things to consider? Thanks for taking the time to read and respond if you do! [link] [comments] |
Home PCs can't ping on same network and VMWare networking question Posted: 30 Mar 2021 08:21 PM PDT I have two PCs on the same subnet plugged in and wired and they can't ping each other. Why is this? Also, if I want to run VMWare off of Machine A and I want that guest to talk to another VMWare guest on Machine B, why can't they ping each other? Any help would be much appreciated. Posted: 30 Mar 2021 08:10 PM PDT What I mean by "not affect the second floor" is will wireless availability still be present in the router? From the explanations I've watched, it seems like it gets passed on to the AP and the router would only allow wired connections from there. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Mar 2021 07:54 PM PDT I've tried to read as much as I can today on here, but I've just never dealt with home networking before, so I'm really sorry for whatever dumb questions I ask. I recently bought a two story, 1700sqft, house originally built in 1904, but re-renovated about 10-12 years ago. I've got AT&T fiber, and that fiber wall setup and modem is upstairs at the front of house. My media room (tv, gaming computer) is downstairs at the back of the house. We get hot garbage for a wifi signal, and I can't stand it anymore and need to fix it ASAP. There are coax outlets in all the rooms, as well as one near our AT&T Fiber setup. So I was thinking MoCA would be a good option, since running cat5e/6 cable is not going to be an option for me right now. I found the coax line-in outside the house - it immediately goes into a splitter, with one running upstairs and the other downstairs. Can I just, unplug the coax line in since I don't use it anyways? And then use a MoCA adapter upstairs near the router, and the other downstairs in the media room? And then set up an Access Point from the downstairs MoCA stuff? I'm really just trying to wrap my brain around if it's really going to be that straight forward. Also, it's definitely recommended over one of those new fancy Asus AX6600 mesh systems, right? Thanks in advance everyone. [link] [comments] |
Apparently, my house already had runs... Posted: 30 Mar 2021 03:49 PM PDT An update from my previous post How should I set up my home network? For those wondering what I did, I chatted with AT&T to see if they could send someone out to relocate the Fiber ONT to my garage since I had just bought some shelves. Att guy arrives and looks around the garage and asks what's on the wall. Turns out the house was already wired with CAT5E. One run to each room in the house and one to the living room (which unfortunately doesn't work so I add a WAX610 Netgear ap to the Master bedroom but it easily covers the lot. Getting 800Mbps Mid-day and upward of 970Mbps during the evening over ethernet on my desktop. This is over the wifi on my phone. Not bad. I was kinda disappointed I didn't get to have the experience of running the lines myself and I also wanted CAT6. But I'm satisfied with the performance and I do get to rerun one line since the livingroom one isn't working. I've tried rewiring each end 3 times to no avail. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Mar 2021 07:35 PM PDT I move away in a few months and was wondering what kind of router y'all would recommend for under $200? The place I'm moving into is only about 500 sq ft. I currently have the google mesh routers set up in my house and love them so I was thinking about buying just one of those. Any advice helps. [link] [comments] |
Gigibit router/modem recommendations Posted: 30 Mar 2021 07:03 PM PDT Should I pay $14/mo for xfinity's modem/router they offer with the gigibit service or should I buy my own router/modem? If buying one, are there specific ones needed if getting xfinity gigibit internet? TIA! [link] [comments] |
Need help blocking Internet on VLAN -- Except for one device... Posted: 30 Mar 2021 06:42 PM PDT So I have a router feeding a L2 switch with 2 vlans. The router is providing Internet to both networks. 192.168.101.0/24 - (aka VLAN 1) - ports 2-16, Internet access (Rack Pc, Apple TV, client devices) 192.168.102.0/24 (aka VLAN 2) - ports 17-24, Internal Network for A/V equipment, I do not want Internet to be accessible on this network, it is for A/V equipment to speak to one another. The thing is I need one device on the A/V network to be accessed remotely... Can I edit the DHCP server for the A/V network to distribute DNS (Or gateway?) address "56.56.45.34" or something random to the A/V DHCP clients? That way if someone accidently plugs into this network, they won't be able to access Internet? And for the one device that needs Internet access, I could set the correct config on there as a static... I don't mind using the firewall, but the objective is to keep it simple, and if I plug in my laptop into the AV network and need new firmware or something, to be able to just go into my network settings and put in the correct IP address Any one see any issues here? Switch: DLINK DGS1210-52, Firewall: ER-LITE3, Needy device: QSYS CORE tl;dr: I have two networks - one with Internet and one that should not have Internet, but I have a device (with one port) that needs access to the Internet and to control devices on the non-internet network -- any way to do with without complex FW rules? TP-Link Archer C6 orange internet light Posted: 30 Mar 2021 02:53 PM PDT Since I've had my TP-Link Archer C6, I've had problems with the wired and wireless connection. Whenever the TP-Link loses power for a short time, the router doesn't work anymore. The lights are green, except for the internet icon. The internet icon is orange. I have tried factory resetting the router, both manually and from the browser. I've also tried restoring it by using a backup I made when it was working correctly. I've also tried a different port on the home router that the TP-Link is connected to. Whenever I plug the ethernet cable into a laptop or desktop PC, the internet seems to work fine. It's not the cable, that works fine. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas on how I can get my internet to work again, please let me know! Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Mar 2021 06:28 PM PDT I just moved to a new area in my city and had to switch internet providers from Bell to Rogers as Bell didn't provide high enough speeds. I now have the Ignite Internet Gigabit package which gives me up to 1Gbps download speed and a 30Mbps upload speed. I play a lot of Apex Legends on my PC (specs below) and use a 50ft CAT.6 UTP Flat Ethernet Cable 30AWG to connect straight into my router. I've had technicians come and they said that there is no problem with my internet. What could possibly be the problem here? I've run multiple speed tests and they all show the same result of A or A+ in all categories, yet while running I see bufferbloat spikes of 200+ when there is no one else connected using bandwidth. I've also attached a video of me playing Apex Legends, showing the spikes and an imgur upload of me pinging my router and google. Posted: 30 Mar 2021 02:22 PM PDT I have a netgear cm500 modem and a linksys mesh router. I pay spectrum for 400 Mbps. Going on speed test from my phone I am only getting 100. Plugging my laptop into my modem gets 250 max. Weird thing is the linksys app has a speed test and it shows 400 but that's not the real speed of I plug into the router. Not sure what else to do. Verizon Fios router page only shows mAC Addresses? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 02:01 PM PDT Hi, I have a problem with my router provided by Verizon Fios.. When I go to the port forwarding section, the devices listed only display the MAC address, which are practically useless to me as I'd rather have a list of the IP addresses of my devices. The previous router they provided showed the IP addresses normally, so I have no clue why this one is different. The model is a Fios G3100 router. [link] [comments] |
