Have AT&T Fiber 1000, but only getting around 300 down. Any quick tips? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 02:25 PM PST As the title says, I have their Fiber 1000 plan and I am not getting advertised speeds. I'm hardwired directly to the router. There's an integrated speedtest when you log into the router, that shows about 970~ down and up. However, my wife's PC is only getting roughly 300 down and up to an AT&T server in Houston, TX through speedtest.net. Wife's computer is fairly new, I would assume it has a 1 gig NIC. She has a 6th gen i7 so the CPU won't be bottlenecking it. We have a 100ft Cat6e cable as well so it shouldn't be limiting in anyway. We switched to a different server on speedtest that's near our area, the download speeds went down to 250 and the upload actually went up to 940. Not entirely sure what's going on here. There's no antivirus installed besides Windows Defender, I disabled IPV6 on the router too. There's a TV, a Google Hub, a chromecast, plus our phones on the network, but they aren't taking much bandwidth at all. My OnePlus 8 Pro actually gets around 400 down and 600 up on wifi. I tried resetting the router and all the basic troubleshooting tricks I can think of. I do not think it's AT&T's fault, as the router itself is getting 1 gig, so it's somewhere along the way from their router to my wife's PC, or her PC itself. Is there any advise on how to fix this? Speeds are alright for me and her, it's about 45 MB/s on steam so it's still fast. But I'd rather get what I'm paying for. Should I buy my own router? Or are there any tips and tricks y'all know that can help. Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments] |
Are there any decent routers left? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 07:15 AM PST I'm in the market for a new router and have done a fair amount of research. I'm having difficulty finding a suitable choice not for lack of inclusive features on any specific model, but for the addition of Trend Micro's privacy invasion on almost anything decent. I'm sure many of you know of them by now. The router I have now is an older Asus RT-AC56R. It's reliable, gets the job done, but I can't activate the large majority of features without enabling Trend Micro. I will not under any circumstance agree to their insane EULA or TOS enabling them to collect almost all data traveling through my router. Not happening. That being said, are there any good routers available that DON'T have Trend Micro or a similar system attached? I don't want a debate whether they're good to have or it's not that bad, I'm not willing to compromise; I don't want them or another similar service involved in my internet usage. [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to use a switch to connect both a PS4 and PC from the same Ethernet cable? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 04:19 AM PST The title has the core question really, My scenario is I have a single Ethernet cable (CAT 5) running through my attic to my office on the opposite side of the house, I have a PS4 here also for when I stream. I wish to have an Ethernet connection into both the PS4 and PC but trying to avoid running a second cable from the router. If it can be done via a switch, what are the downsides/upsides? If it cannot be done, are there alternatives? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Newby to HomeNetworking needs help with QoS or getting a new router. Posted: 03 Mar 2021 12:23 PM PST Hi! So let me explain. We got a new TV, LG with WebOS. After 1 year (straight after the guaranty was over) it started dropping internet and whatnot. So we got a new router "Archer 9C" it solved the dropping of signal for a time, until the (what i "assume") wireless card of the TV died, so then i got a MI Box, it works perfectly, to the point i could be a chill for the company. Whenever he downloads something heavy, (Game updates and such) the GUI of the router basically loses track of his PC as it no longer sees it as a wired connection and basically ignores the QoS rule. My son's PC is behind a powerline adapter tho, as the router is way too far from his room, in his end it works great, but as i said, when he does something bandwidth-heavy, he lags the whole network. Any solutions or ideas are welcome, ty for reading. [link] [comments] |
Looking to upgrade. What is the best router for lots of devices? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 12:08 PM PST Current Setup
I just switched to 1 gigabit internet this morning and I am looking to upgrade my router to make sure all of my devices are getting good and consistent speed over Wifi. I have a lot of active devices at any given moment because I have a large family of gamers with multiple gaming PCs and I know it is probably pushing my router to the max during my prime time usage. Any recommendations? My spending cap is probably around $450-480. [link] [comments] |
Constant jitter but ISP tech can't find Posted: 03 Mar 2021 03:25 PM PST Hello all I'm looking for help. 1 month ago I started experiencing issues with my internet. Voice chat would be choppy and lag in game. I started speed testing my setup and I stated getting odd results Test 1= 25ms ping 40ms jitter 35mbps down 7mbps up Test 2 = 17ms ping 3ms jitter 40mbps down 7mbps up Test 3= 20ms ping 36ms jitter 34mbps down 6mbps up (I want to add here, I ping tested my LAN and have a ping of under 1ms) These tests were done seconds apart on a 100mb/10mb service. I called my ISP and they sent a tech out. He went through all the connection points and tested them and he had 0 issues. I've swapped out modems and same issue I've swapped out routers and same issue I tried changing all my cabling and same issue. I am at a loss and have no idea where to look further. Is it possible my router is wonky and causing issues? Anyone else have any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Is it worth changing my ISP? And Nighthawk R6700 questions. Posted: 03 Mar 2021 01:29 PM PST Hello internet friends! This is my first post here in this incredibly helpful sub. I'm just looking for some simple advice on my current ISP and router. I currently have Verizon Fios 100Mbps up/down. I'm using whatever modem/router Fios forces you to use and have it connected to my Netgear Nighthawk R6700. I run ethernet to my PC and also to a switch in the living room that's connected to my TV and PS5. All other devices (phones, laptops, tablets, Tv's, etc) are connected via wifi. I currently pay about $55usd a month for my current internet package. I have the option to switch to Optimum 940Mbps up/down for $45usd. Both ISP's say they're fiber lines. I have a weird white Verizon box hooked up to what looks like a coax cable and a wall outlet. Not sure exactly what is it or how it pertains to my internet but it's completely separate from my modem and router. I am wondering: 1) Is this worth switching to considering its much faster for less money. 2) If I do switch should I also upgrade my Nighthawk? 3) Do I need to buy a modem or does the Nighthawk handle both and if it does handle both is it still better to have a stand alone modem rather than have the Nighthawk do both jobs. Thank you for any help and advice. Homenetworks and internet in general isn't my strong suit but I know enough to get by generally. Sorry for formatting its my first time posting here and I'm on mobile. [link] [comments] |
Very confusing stuff from an Ethernet cable. Affects all network operations... Posted: 03 Mar 2021 06:18 PM PST I have an Ethernet cable, that usually runs 200 down, 160 up. Today, it's doing 11 down, 0.07 up. The connection is horrid. The little "Ethernet" icon in the bottom right, fluctuates between "Identifying network" (Ethernet icon with triangle and exclamation mark) to 4 bars of wifi.... and occationally, proper connection to Ethernet. I've unplugged, replugged the cable. Flushed DNS Checked my firewall I honestly don't know what else to do... can anyone help? Win8, Realtek PCIe cable, also have a LAN card.. [link] [comments] |
Researching for wired modem (+ a linux OS) Posted: 03 Mar 2021 05:55 PM PST Hello reddit ! What I'm searching for is a modem which has a SFP+ port , at least 4 Gibabit (or more) ethernet ports, and is performant enough to stream something like HD to 4K videos directly in my local network (HDMI over ethernet). My provider supposedly offer 10G/s of downstream, but I don't think this is going to be the choking point anytime soon anyway... I've seem the https://eu.store.ui.com/collections/unifi-network-routing-switching/products/udm-pro So as anyone had good/bad experiences with that class of devices that could help me make my choice ? Thank you very much for your time. [link] [comments] |
Possible to block one device from another? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 10:50 AM PST I'm attempting to "fix" a potential issue but I'm not sure if my plan is possible or feasible. TLDR at the end. I, like many people now, work from home full time. I got a message from my companies network engineering group that my device was running bittorrent software and they cut my VPN until the problem was rectified. After some troubleshooting they are saying that a device with ip 192.168.1.17 was actually making the call, and somehow crossing into our network. I kind of think this is a load of crap, but I digress. I went through my access logs and that IP was assigned to my Android TV (completely stock, nothing interesting installed) at the time. I'm wondering if it's possible to block my TV from talking to my laptop without blocking it from everything else. I've tried some searching, but the problem is I don't know what exactly to search for to get the correct procedure. I'm hoping that this can isolate the TV until I can figure out what's going on with it (or at least prove that there's nothing wrong with it) TLDR: Can a consumer grade (Netgear nighthawk), stop one device from talking to another device on the network [link] [comments] |
Would using routed Ethernet cables to close the distance between powerlines be worth it? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 05:17 PM PST Unfortunately with the way my house is structured, running a cat6 though my U shaped house with bricks walls and 2 levels will be very difficult and will involved exposed wires which I will never be allowed to do. Fortunately I can at least run a cable much closer to the destination closing maybe half the gap. Currently I have a 1600av2 powerline that gives me 50~mbps +-30 which is quite annoying. This would be reasonable to do right and this isn't a dumb idea? I assume all I need is the cat6 cable, crimple tool and the Ethernet heads. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Mar 2021 08:57 PM PST So I want a mesh router that has two SSID for 2.4ghz and 5ghz. I'm tired of one ssid network that decided what band the item uses. Posted: 03 Mar 2021 08:47 PM PST Goal is to overhaul the current network, and make it a bit of a project. Went ubiquiti hardware: - USG - gen2 cloud key - 8 port poe switch - AP pro Going the enclosed media cab that goes in wall.
Have a 1gb connection, hoping to hardwire 2 offices and other rooms down the road. Main goal is to hardwire my office. So the question is, did I miss anything obvious? [link] [comments] |
Confusion over wifi 6 card speed with AC router Posted: 03 Mar 2021 08:45 PM PST I just recently got upgraded to 500/500 with my ISP, and was reading that wifi 6 routers are not worth upgrading to. My wifi router is an R7800 and should be more than capable of 500/500. I'm confused over if it's worth buying a wifi 6 adapter card. I know I won't be getting the wifi 6 ax standard with just the card, but are these wifi 6 capable of fast speeds connecting to an AC router? For example the Asus AC68 is 3x3 card with a theoretical speed of 1.3gbps. Can current AX cards reach or exceed this without an AX router? [link] [comments] |

MoCa Adapter and Arris NVG468MQ Gateway Posted: 03 Mar 2021 08:25 PM PST Hi all, I have an older house with coax and am looking to use MoCa to wire up some of my rooms. I'm having some issues with device connectivity when connected through MoCa and networking is not my strong suit. I tried searching, but wasn't able to find anything. I'm thinking I'm missing some details or I misunderstood how this was supposed to work. Diagram: This is my current upstairs setup and my desired scenario downstairs. https://imgur.com/a/XybNqYT Setup: I have FIOS through Ziply fiber (formerly Frontier) and it comes through my ONT and ends up at a Arris NVG468MQ gateway. As I understand it, this has MoCa built in, so I shouldn't need another adapter (might need one for better speeds if I'm understanding things correctly). I purchased an the Actiontec Bonded MoCA 2.5 Network Adapter that I have directly connected over coax to the Arris gateway. I then have a laptop connected to the adapter via an ethernet cable. I've also tried connecting it across coax terminals in my house with the same result. Also, the coax lights on both devices are green and I see the device as connected in the modem's web UI. Problem: No internet connectivity when trying to browse or use internet capable applications. I'm able to ping 8.8.8.8 as well as www.google.com. When I connect the same device directly to my gateway via an ethernet cable, no issues. Things I've tried: I've tried restarts of the devices, manually setting IP addresses and DNS, but no luck. I've messed around with some settings, but nothing too drastic. TLDR: I have an Arris NVG468MQ gateway connecting to a Actiontec Bonded MoCA 2.5 Network Adapter via coax that's connecting to a laptop via ethernet. The internet seems busted, but I'ma ble to ping things. Connecting the laptop directly to the gateway works fine. [link] [comments] |
Lag while watching Disney+ on WiFi, when my Xbox is plugged via ethernet Posted: 03 Mar 2021 08:20 PM PST Does anyone know why I would lag on my Xbox when someone in the house is watching Disney+? Disney+ is running on a TV that is connected wirelessly and the Xbox is directly plugged into the router. The odd thing is, only when I stream movies do I have lag. I can have 2-3 Xbox's on, all wired, and be fine. I can have 3-4 computers running wireless while watching Youtube, streaming music, etc, and everything is always fine. I have 1gb internet. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Mar 2021 07:53 PM PST Hello, I have a Netgear C7000 that keeps throttling my wifi speeds. I used to be able to stream multiple 4k streams at once, but as of late the connection has gotten slow to the point where I sometimes cannot even do 1080p on Youtube. This is on multiple devices so I know it's not a single case issue. I've been reading some people attach fans to this modem/router combo because apparently it gets hot so I don't know if thats a common issue. If that's the case, should I turn to router's bridge mode on to where it only acts as a modem and get a new router OR should I replace the entire thing? [link] [comments] |
ethernet connecting to incorrect device Posted: 03 Mar 2021 07:56 AM PST so i recently bought a new gigabit tp-link NIC because my old lan port had died and had noticed an increase in latency compared to before. I went to the internet options and had noticed that my pc was being connected to the incorrect device. sky-booster is a wireless access port which i had setup to increase wifi range. shortly after my lan port died i temporarily used a usb wifi adapter thing and connected to the sky-booster but now it is permanently stuck on sky booster, it used to have the generic name network. my current setup is the powerline adapter(netgear) coming to the switch(netgear) and the switch then splits of into the various devices. There is no direct connection between the sky booster and my pc at the moment. I have uninstalled the NIC in device manager removed and replugged the NIC [link] [comments] |
Internet slowed down to half, what am I doing wrong Posted: 03 Mar 2021 07:42 PM PST I xir9have xfinity and the basic internet package. I just purchased my own modem and router. The modem is a neatgear cable modem CM500. The router is a speedefey AC1200. Ever since I got these my 2.4ghz has dropped by half. The 5 ghz is what normally my 2.4ghz was. Which was about 120mbs. When upstairs and watching any streaming network, it buffers a lot. We never had this issue with the modem/router combo xfinity gave us. But when we got our own it's just issues. My test results were better 40-65 mbs on wifi on 2.4ghz. 5ghz was average 120mbs. Wired was about 90mbs. [link] [comments] |
a good software to check the traffic of all the devices on my wifi network? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 07:29 PM PST No, I'm not interested in checking whether my brothers are looking for adult content or anything like that, or controlling what my girlfriend is doing, the issue here is that me and my family are having inconsistent lag spikes, and we have to restart our modem regularly because of it (third world problems, nothing we can do, our ISP's modems are cheap and bad, and even installing an extender doesn't work) As of late the problem escalated, and I want to discard any malware/virus/backdoor/etc on our devices before complaining with our ISP (again). Is there any software I can download/pay which can tell me the network's traffic in real (or almost real) time? The closest I found was "network utilities" for android which tells me which devices are connected to my network, but doesn't tells me traffic or anything. That helped me check if we had an intruder on our network, and thankfully we don't have any Thanks in advance and sorry my english [link] [comments] |
comcast XB7 + goCoax 2.5 - no connection Posted: 03 Mar 2021 07:29 PM PST Hi all, I'm trying to set up a MoCA connection from my XB7 gateway and not having much luck. The XB7 has moca enabled (2.0), but the status says "Unconnected - no devices". The Moca light on the gocoax is not lighting up. The current route is coax1 -> router; coax2 -> gocoax -> pc. How do I go about debugging this? (I switched the devices between the two coax ports to make sure both are working) Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Mar 2021 07:20 PM PST Attempting to do some tracerts to isolate ping and jitter issues I've been having. Seeing some "abnormal" ping spikes when doing a traceroute to www.google.com One had a hop of 158ms, many others are spiking to 50-70ms Could these be problematic? Also, noticing that the problem almost always happens when my ISP gateway is having a ms over 1. Would this be a gateway issue? Other ping spikes are in my ISP routes. Also, it's ALWAYS timing out at the 7th hop (except for one time). It times out only at the 7th then the 8th and so on is fine. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Mar 2021 07:11 PM PST I can't really find anything on this. All the posts I search are about upgrading from WiFi 5 to WiFi 6 (802.11ax), and the consensus I'm seeing about that is no and that it would only be a 25% increase but only near the max potential speeds for these bands anyway. At my speeds though (110 Mbps is what I pay for so I don't know how I'd get more) on 5GHz, would the jump from WiFi 4/802.11n to WiFi 5/802.11ac be worth it/increase the speed, or not considering I'm not near the max theoretical speed of 802.11n (300 Mbps) anyway? Would there be any other benefit if not in speed maybe like signal quality or range? Would this be significant/worth it in real world situations? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
