A time waster for scam callers?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:53 AM PDT

Lately I've been getting bombarded with scam callers, asking me if I'm interested in bitcoin, stock trading, changing my electric bill, you name it.

I'm looking for an app that, when activated during a call, will say random recorded phrases every now and then. Something like, "mm-mmh", "I see", "what does that mean?", "very interesting..." and so on.

My objective is to waste their time as much as possible so that I can leave the phone somewhere while these people will be speaking with a random voice for some time without getting anywhere.

Does an app like this exist?

Is anyone having issues with Amazon and their email apps or Google search and weather network widget? Mine constantly crash for no apparent reason as of an hour ago.

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 01:51 PM PDT

Edit: as shitty as it is for all of us I'm glad its not just me and the responses have prevented me from needlessly doing a factory restore on my phone

Edit 2: Go to the Google app store and Uninstall "android system webview"

I just read a news article talking about the issue (apparently wide spread) and now my apps are working

First Android App Issues With Testing In App Billing Subscriptions

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 12:03 PM PDT

TLDR First time building an android app. Getting error messages without any hints of what is causing the issue when trying to implement IAB subscriptions. I ask some questions at the end of this post that I would be very appreciative if experienced Android devs knew the answers.

First time building an android app and working with the Google Play Console. For some background information, the project began as an Angular web app and then I used Cordova to convert the web app into a mobile app. The app is currently live on iOS and web. We charge a monthly $8.99 auto renewing subscription. Since my goal is to release our app on android as well, this means I need to implement our subscriptions again with In App Billing. Sounded easy enough and this was supposed to be a light lift because I've already handled a Stripe and IAP integration and our existing Cordova setup handles most of the platform specific code.

Unfortunately, every time I try to purchase a product in the app, I get the following message from the native playstore dialog "Error - the item you were attempting to purchase could not be found".

I am able to see information about the product in my app that I configured in the play store console like title, description, price, renewal period etc. I can also verify that the product status is active. So I don't think the error lies in the configuration of my Subscription. What I think might be the issue after reading the following post on medium is that my app is not in the Alpha or Beta track. I submitted to the Alpha track but my app has been marked with a status of review which has not changed for over a week.

This whole process has left me with quite a few questions, if anyone with more android experience could help with answering some or all of the following, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    Questions:

    1. Can anyone confirm or deny that my app must be reviewed and approved in the alpha track for these subscriptions to appear in the native google play store dialog?
    2. Once approved for the alpha track, do I need to submit and upload a bundle/apk to the google play console every time I want to test subscriptions? Does a similar review process accompany each alpha apk upload? This seems like a tedious process so I am hoping not.
    3. I submitted to the alpha track about a week ago. I've heard horror stories about long app reviews on iOS and Android, but my iOS app got reviewed for production in less than 24 hours. This had me optimistic going into this process. Is my review time abnormally long? What course of action should I take if any?
    4. I was working on writing the code that I could while waiting on the app review and started working with RTDN to listen for subscription state updates. Is there no way to configure a test and production cloud pub sub topic? We have separate dev and prod environments so this would be useful. My work around was to implement one pub/sub function that receives the RTDN message and makes http requests to dev and prod that just pass on the pub/sub message. Is this the cleanest solution for this issue or am I just just missing something? I would prefer to just have an identical pub/sub function in dev and prod that use the same topic but this doesn't seem like an option. (side note but this is still better than polling for updates when working with apple IAP subscriptions, so things could be worse. Stripe is the cleanest payment processor I've worked with so far.)

Weather app that displays both Fahrenheit and Celsius together?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 06:58 AM PDT

I'm currently using weatherbug and like that it displays the temperature in my notifications all the time, however it only displays one measurement. I'm going to be moving to the USA in the future and as such I need both to be displayed. (So I can learn easier)

    Thanks

Does SD Maid Pro clean all app cache?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:47 AM PDT

Android 9 32 bit - I frequently get "Storage Space running out" messages on my phone, and since Android doesn't let me delete all app cache at once, it's a royal pain to go through each app and clear cache individually.

I already have the SD Maid free version and it helped me with some storage issues before, but now it doesn't seem to be doing much. Will the pro version help me with my problem?

    Thanks.

1/2 my apps are crashing (Galaxy s10+)

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 02:31 PM PDT

I have no idea what triggered it, but suddenly it seems that 1/2 of my apps are crashing within a few seconds of opening. I first noticed trying to open outlook, bit immediately found the problem with multiple other apps I have tried to use (Bleacher Report, Team Snap, Prime Video, etc)

I tried searching to see if I could find anything to explain this, bit it was pretty much all dealing with how to fix 1 app that is crashing. I figure something else is going on, but went ahead and tried it...force stop, clear data and relogin into everything. That did sort of work. I could open the apps and enter my login info to get it pulled up. However, the next time I tried to open each app it was back to crashing. I've gone in to check memory and that seems normal. I'm not sure what else to check. Any ideas?

Edit: issue solved. Android system webview issue. Thanks g33k4life!!

Additional update - Google has updated this app to fix this problem (late on 3/22). You can go into the app store and update to the current version and it should be working.

Is any of the other streaming services better at playing audiobooks than the nightmare that Spotify is?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 06:18 AM PDT

My 50min kids story is broken into 40 parts for some reason. There is no way to bookmark or resume where I left (I resort to making screen-shots to "save" the current part, others suggest to hide or "like" the current chapter). If I want to download it for listening on the road, I have to "like" the album (now it's scattered around my music albums). Every time I want to listen, I have to make sure that "shuffle" is deactivated. Of course, nothing is deleted automatically after listening, I have to do it manually after every story. Even searching for audiobooks is terrible due to the splitting of every book in 100000 parts. Spotify does not care about it since 2018: "Not right now".

Is the audiobook player in other streaming services less frustrating?

I'm frustrated enough to switch service just for that.

    Remote CBT therapy

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 11:15 AM PDT

I'm in the process of launching a new app and would really appreciate your advice.
But first let me tell you why I felt the need to create the app in the first place.

    How I hated Zoom.

When the COVID craze set in a year ago, I was not ready. I don't about you, but transitioning from the life I was accustomed to, where everything was familiar and predictable, to remote work, in a matter of days, was stressful for me. And I wasn't alone in those feelings - my team also felt overwhelmed and stressed out with that sudden isolation in the constant company of the new (and uninvited) friend - Zoom.

Remember the extreme degree of uncertainty that prevailed at the onset of the lockdown? We had no idea when the isolation would end, when we would get our lives back, when we would see our friends. It took about a month for the anxiety to accumulate, and then one after another my employees started to drop out of the work process. "Sorry, I'm feeling down", "not feeling well", "can't hand that in"etc. Then a girl burst into tears during one Zoom conference, and after having a one-on-one talk with her, I realized that she was experiencing the same thing I was - anxiety and depression. And we weren't alone in that - a bigger part of my team was having a tough time dealing.

    Individual therapy.

Ok, sure, I know that the answer to those problems is psychotherapy. And yes, I had a therapist, but each session cost me, we met only once per week online, which felt insufficient to help me cope with all that crumbled on top of me. I would go to my session, whine, complain, ask for advice, and then I was again alone, on my own.

Then I tried to put myself in the shoes of my employees: they couldn't afford those costly sessions. I know that a couple of them turned to affordable psychologists from social services, but felt little relief.

I don't know, how this sounds to you at the moment - maybe a bit dramatic. But a year ago, that's exactly how it felt - almost like the world was ending.

Anyway, my team and I ended up surfing the net for self-help articles to cope with our new reality - we actually launched a daily article exchange at our morning meetings.

    Idea for the app.

That's when I thought about affordable psychological support. A service that would be available 24/7. Trustworthy information one could turn to when the anxiety kicked in.

I pitched this idea to my friend, who runs an IT-company and we decided to develop a self-help app. Later we called it "Therappy".

The idea behind the app is to build a digital supplement for the therapist visits (or MAYBE even replace talk therapy altogether).

I realize how ambitious this endeavor might sound, but I think we did a good job with our first anti-anxiety course.

This is where I need your help - can you have a look at it and give me your feedback - however positive or negative it may be.

What do you think about this idea?

Do you think it could work?

Should we start growing the content in the app, reaching out to some other problems.

P.S. I'm aware that an app like this is NOT suitable for people with clinical depression, suicidal ideation, or any other serious psychological or psychiatric conditions. Yes - people with serious conditions should consult a specialist.

App to play mp4 on desktop

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 10:14 AM PDT

I use AnimGIF app to play, on my phone desktop, endless gifs from a folder with thousands of gifs. Gifs though take up lots of space compared to mp4. It's there a similar app that plays mp4? It has to be able to randomly play a folder of mp4 files and be able to scale.. it makes my phone really interesting.

Is there an app to artificially delay app audio to match up with a display?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:47 AM PDT

    Hi.

So I recently rented a car from a so-so company and I noticed that the car doesn't automatically sync the audio from its speakers to the video on my phone screen. I like to watch YouTube videos and such when I'm waiting in the car but this delay is killing me, it's like a solid second.

I looked online and found VLC, which gives you the ability to control the delay of the audio output when you're using the app itself. As much as I like the app, I can't watch netflix on it and while it can add YouTube videos it cannot add complete playlists, at least not in my experience.

Is there an app I can use to delay the whole device's audio output so it matches up with the picture? I'm stuck with a month contract with this car so getting another onr isn't an option.
