    Did I do OK? Lenovo P1 Rev3

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 06:07 PM PST

I have been wanting a reliable workhorse laptop with high ram + memory for audio processing (and likely some future video work). I just ordered a Lenovo P1 Rev3 with the following specs. I know the video card and processor are overkill - I actually wanted to order the next model down for $300 less but it was sold out, so went with this. Regardless, the price I got with Perks at Work was around $1650 which seemed to be by far the best I could find with this configuration. Note I'm not an expert in these things though - curious if I'm right that this was a good value.

Buying 7-laptops for Cambodian University-bound students - Please help identify best from the list :)

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 05:02 AM PST

Hi! I live in the US but spent a period living and working at a school in Cambodia. The graduating class this year is 7 students and I plan to buy them all laptops as they all plan to continue to university. The school will pay for their university, but not for laptops and I know school was way easier for me when i had a laptop.

I'm not officially a Luddite, but have always used MacBooks. I have found some too vendors in Cambodia and determined shipping from the US isn't an option. I would LOVE your advice in the best inexpensive computer options from the sites below for students who need to run Microsoft word/ppt and access the internet. I am hoping to spend $2K - $3K for all 7 devices combined

    Dell g7 i7 8750h gtx1060 vs hp omen i7 8750h gtx1060 POLL

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 01:21 AM PST

Hi all, I'm looking to get into a studying and light-medium gaming laptop.

These two have peaked my interest for convenience of price and specs.

They have the similar specs allround except the Omen has a 144hz display and the G7 has a 80hz.

    Also from browing this forum, I've noted;

    • Omen runs hotter, Loud fans, but has a better display and has more ram option.

    • G7 Lacks power in comparison, bad screen quality, but is much quieter and has a better battery life.

I have found these two laptops with similar specs locally for under $1000 AUD.

What's everyone's thoughts on both brands?

Any input would be appreciated, Cheers.

    Also see the POLL I created below;

Which laptop should i go for?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 02:58 AM PST

    Hey!

I'm looking for suggestions on a good laptop to buy for gaming editing schoolwork etc.

I was looking at the Asus ROG zephyrus g14 but the cheaper one has a bad gpu, and the expensive one is... well, expensive and has some issues with The screen.

So, i found the asus TUF a15 laptops. a RTX 2060 and good specs for $1200 (my budget is $1300).
But people are saying it has some major cooling/overheating issues and it doesn't have good graphics?

Please help. I can't build a desktop since i need the pc to be portable.

I have no idea what to do, please help with info on these two laptops and/or provide suggestions for a good laptop under $1300 with a RTX gpu.

All help and suggestions are highly appreciated.

    Thanks a lot in advance!!!

Best Laptop Option for Under 2500 USD

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 05:13 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**

      Max is $2,500 USD

Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes. Was considering this as a cheaper way to get an Alienware or MacBook Pro.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? My concern is quality. I'm a working adult enrolling in an accounting program soon and want a solid laptop that I can get a few years of life out of without running into any issues. It'll be used for work and fun. If it has a good battery, awesome, if not then that's cool too, that's why you plug them in.

How important is weight and thinness to you Not important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Low intensity games (e.g. WoW) and probably office programs for school.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? This doesn't matter all that much to me. I'd be a casual gamer at best, playing games from my childhood like Command & Conquer and Zoo Tycoon but if I wanted to check out the latest hot game I'd like to be able to play it without issues, I'd like to be able to play games on Steam without any problems.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? For me it's a good mix price and quality. I'm not looking to replace my laptop every year, I want to hold on to this one as long as I can. Now, if it happens to have an optical drive that would be pretty cool too.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm very drawn to the MacBook Pro. My school store has the 16inch with 16gb of memory and a 1tb SSD for $2,600. I've wanted to try my hand at a MacBook for years but I want a machine that will last and for almost $3,000 it better give me a few good years before it goes bad but the opinions are mixed on if the MacBook Pro is the way to go. While I'd like to say I'll use the laptop for hardcore gaming, I know I won't, it'll be casual game with me being curious about today's top online games but i really need to be able to use this laptop for anything and have it last me. Alternatively, I can always purchase a refurbished iMac for $500-800 to satisfy my desire for an Apple computer and still get a really good laptop.

MSI GP 76 vs Razer Blade 15 2021

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 04:15 AM PST

Hi everyone. I am currently torn between MSI GP 76 and Razer Blade 15 2021.

    Amazon GP76

    Razer Blade 15

My main concern is between the build quality of two. For me razer seems like a better choice from material point of view, but due to low price difference between them I can't make clear choice. I would like your opinion. Any kind of help or review is appreciated.

Edit: I mainly play FPS (tarkov for instance). Weight and battery is not that important factors since I don't plan to use the laptop outside very much. The reliable build-in quality and performance is my main concerns.

Help me decide between these three laptops!

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 03:39 AM PST

So I need to buy a new laptop, and it has been kinda hard to decide which one should I go for. I've done a lot of research and it has come down to these three laptops. Also, a bit of background information.

My budget is around €1600 or equivalent in $ (so around $1800-$1900).

I work as a financial analyst, I do some programming on the side and some light gaming if I have the time (gaming is not really important, but it would be nice if the laptop could handle it).

    No MAC or Lenovo.

The laptop has to have an i7 processor or AMD Ryzen 4000, also a dedicated graphic card.

Screen size 15.6", no more, no less.

Build quality is quite important and then performance. A good battery life would be nice, but I'm not super picky about that.

So based on the above these are my three options:

    1. HP Omen 15 - AMD Ryzen 7 4800 H, NVidia GTX 1660 Ti, 144Hz screen - €1400

    2. HP Envy 15 - Intel i7-10750H, NVidia GTX 1660 Ti, Full HD screen (I prefer this to the OLED 4k, because of the shadow door effect) - €1500

    3. DELL Inspiron 7501 - Intel i7-10750, NVidia GTX 1650 Ti - €1379

I would appreciate any help with this issue. Also, any suggestion for another laptop is more than welcome.

Feel free to ask any questions.

    Decent CAD/Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 03:24 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
PHP 28000 Maximum; ideally below PHP 25000.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Used/refurbished laptops preferred.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build Quality, Performance. Everything else doesn't matter.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
As long as it fits in a relatively large backpack, everything else doesn't matter.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
CAD and Gaming. None in particular, but I have some requirements below.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Not particularly. Maybe Overwatch/Assassin's Creed at >60FPS most of the time.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
At least 2 GB of dedicated VRAM, GTX 1060 preferred; at least GTX 1050.
      i5/i7 6th gen or better.
      8GB of DDR4 or DDR5 RAM.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I am very new to the laptop market. Please excuse any absurd conditions.
I am on a budget. I would prefer used laptops due to their price.
I don't know enough about AMD, but if there's a graphics card that's around the level of a GTX 1050 or better, I'd like to consider it.
      Currently considering a Clevo N957 with a GTX1060 and 6GB dedicated VRAM.

Suggest a laptop for Gaming (800€, EU)

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 03:19 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Around 800€, Germany. However, any EU country is OK as long as the website & Customer service are in English or Spanish.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Sure. As long as they are in good conditions I don't mind!
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Out of the ones mentioned, performance and build quality are my top priorities. I will probably always use it connected, meaning battery life is redundant.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I couldn't care less about it. If it has to be extra-THICC in order to be properly cooled then so be it.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I would say 15" or above sounds about right.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Mostly gaming but also a little bit programming (Python & Matlab).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Being able to run Civilization VI and Kingdome Come: deliverance fluidly at at least medium settings would be great. Other games that I would like to at least be able to run (aka any settings are fine) are: Cyberpunk, Red dead redemption 2, Resident Evil 2 (the remake ofc) or Witcher 3.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      N/A
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I would like to avoid any Chinese brand (Lenovo & co). Taiwanese brands are fine, tho.

Current Nursing Students: Do you prefer a laptop, tablet, or hybrid for school?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 03:56 PM PST

I currently have a Macbook Air that I bought used in 2017. I need a new laptop as my current one has a horrible battery life. I have been using Macbooks since 2014 and I have liked them, but I am open to buying a non-Apple computer. I am torn between the Macbook Air-M1 and the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1. I really enjoy writing my notes over using my laptop to type notes. But I am really indecisive about whether I should get a traditional laptop or a 2-in-1 laptop that I can use as a tablet. I think that the tablet form would be very useful in Nursing School because most people I know in nursing school use an iPad and they love it. I also think that I could easily transfer over to writing notes through the tablet function. So I just want to hear other people's preference on what device to use during Nursing school. And if anyone has a 2-in-1 if they use it as a tablet often or not at all. I sort-of have a bias towards Apple products but I am trying to be open-minded about other laptops and the Dell 2-in-1 seems really redeeming. Thank you so much!!
