    Simple Questions - February 27, 2021

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 04:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Don't be an idiot like me.

I spent nearly 3 hours building a PC to realize I forgot to install the IO shield on the case. Please be mindful when you start building the PC. I ended up squeezing it in quite awkwardly to the case.

My little brother and I are building his first PC today!

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 09:07 AM PST

So he is working up north (Canada) 14 days on 14 days off. He studied a lot and now make a good living so he finally decided to treat himself with a good rig! The only part he paid off msrp is his gpu, he got it 100$ over MSRP which isn't that bad at all considering the hardware itself!

So we started to build it this morning, tryna show him little by little so he understand and can upgrade parts later on the road!

60Hz TV seems locked at 30fps when I plug in hdmi cable to my computer.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 09:59 AM PST

Ive heard this discussed somewhat before but couldnt really find a clear answer to why this happens. I have a Samsung Series 7 tv (not anything fancy, no gsync or hdmi 2.1) and im connecting it to my computer which has a Gigabyte RTX 3080 gaming OC. My old Xbox One X always was able to manage 60fps on this tv no problem using the same amazon hdmi cable (again not fancy lol). Obviously i checked my display adapter settings on my computer and it read that it was registering 59Hz which isnt quite right but close enough. Anyone know what i can do about this? I can provide more info if needed

    First PC in 15+ years

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 10:31 AM PST

So I've been using macs for the past 15+ years for music production. I'm switching to PC. With the current parts shortage I have decided to go pre built. Also because I haven't built a PC in 20 years. So here's my list from cyberpower.

For context I chose the ram speed and CPU because I run multiple drum libraries and for recording in general core count matters. Also. I will be gaming, however I do not want to spend 1k on a card so that's why I chose what I did.

Seeing as I have not really been into hardware for a long time (Mac user problems lol) I'm out of touch.

Will these parts give me good FPS in games like Warzone and Cyberpunk? And where did I overspend? I went with the AIO even though I've never water cooler (kind of old school here), because I've heard you should with a 5900X. Also went with 3600mghz ram because a lot of reviews suggest it. May expand to 32gb in the future

Help needed with a PC that gets rebooted after launching CERTAIN games.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:59 AM PST

    Hi all.

I've recently upgraded my PC parts, brought only my old 2 SSD's and my old GPU (1070Ti 8GB)

    Other specs:

Case: Sharkoon PURE STEEL white RGB ATX

PSU: Corsair CX750F RGB wh 750W

    RAM: ADATA DDR4 32GB 3200-16 CPU:

    AMD Ryzen 7 5800X

    MOBO: Asus PRIME X570-P

    GPU: KFA2 GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (8GB)

    Storage: SSD 250gb x2 & Samsung 970 EVO Plus M.2 - 1TB

Things i've done so far with the help/advice of friends:

    - Updated drivers on the old Windows install.

    - Unplugged GPU, plugged back in

    - Completely freshly installed Windows on m.2 and installed Nvidia drivers + used a driver updater software to make sure i haven't missed anything.

    - Stress tested the CPU for one hour: no complications

    - Benchmark tested the GPU (It's chill as ever)

I can run games like GTA V /RS3 while streaming simultaneously.

    HELP?!?!?!?

    Edit:

Also tried to switch RAM settings in BIOS to another profile (DOCP)

    Edit 2:

Tried stresstesting CPU & GPU together. No issues. When booting up Apex it's still rebooting the PC. HWmonitor is used, MSi afterburner to check temps. No issues.

Edit 3: We've used DDU to fix the right graphic drivers, we're currently using memtest86 to see what's wrong with the memory.

I'll have all the parts ready for build by next weekend, and man I'm excited to get it all set up! The 1050 ti will do just fine until GPU prices finally settle down (hopefully), but it'll definitely be nice finish off the upgrade once 30-series cards are available. Build will mostly be used for gaming/school work/light music production. Thanks for reading!

Mystery of the red VGA light

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 03:16 PM PST

Sometimes when I try to boot up my pc it starts up but there's no display. There is a red VGA light indicating there is some sort of error. Eventually (after four times of rebooting in this video) it will properly start up and go into windows, after which I can use my pc (playing games) with no trouble. This red VGA light problem can happen a couple of times like in the video, or a hundred times before it will finally boot. Video to visualize the problem.

How can I possibly fix this? I already tried different display ports/cables, unplugging all USB devices, reseating GPU and RAM, turning off the power supply and taking out the CMOS battery.

Taking the GPU out of a Steam Machine.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 03:08 PM PST

    Background:

Hello, my current setup is a Steam Machine specifically, an Alienware Alpha ASM100. I have wanted to build a new PC for a while but, the current graphics card climate has prevented me from moving forward. The device manager list a GTX 960 as the current GPU.

    Question:

Would it be possible to build around a newer GPU (Looking at a 2080ti) and use the 960 as a sort of placeholder until I can get my hands on something more powerful? Would I need any special adapters or need to look out for any incompatibilities?

    Ryzen 5 3600 vs i5 10th gen

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 12:50 AM PST

Guys I'm trying to build my first budget gaming PC and I'm confused on where to start. I know the GPU I'll be getting is GTX 1660 (budget is 1000$ max). I don't have a lot of tech knowledge some people have recommended Ryzen while others are adamant on intel. Which one is better?

Turns out an ECO switch on my power supply was creating loud fan noises.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 03:02 PM PST

Noticed a periodic loud fan noise coming from the computer after cleaning. Turns out I turned on an "ECO" switch on the back of the psu. I guess it saves 1.8 watts of power by shutting the fan off.

I hope no capacitors inside were cooked, there was fairly warm air coming out of the thing when the fan revved up.

Advice on my first PC Build

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 04:09 PM PST

Not anywhere near experienced in building PCs and I'm looking to achieve some sort of 1440 144hz gaming (Not at Ultra settings, I'm mainly into FPS's and other online games not huge story games I have a PS5 for that). Also like to stream a decent looking stream I know I wont achieve the best but I want something to start. Any advice on how I can make my build better or if you think it's overkill let me know. Thanks!

PC randomly restarting during gaming with new components

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 03:59 PM PST

I recently got a new CPU and was trying to game on it when I found that my computer will randomly restart in the middle of most games. I looked online and most people say that this is a PSU problem, but I went out and bought a new 700W PSU and it is still happening. The CPU and PSU are both brand new and I am on a fresh installation of Windows

    Specs:

    Ryzen 5 3600

    Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB-3600Mhz

    ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0

    MSI GeForce GTX 980Ti 6GB

    PNY CS900 120gb

    2 various WD 1TB drives

I don't know what could be causing this. My only other thought is that it could be a Temperature issue but the stock Wraith Stealth should be enough to stop the thing from overheating right?

I really don't even know where to start on this one. Any help is appreciated

Upgrade path for this build. All stores say upgrading GPU is a no go. Why?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 01:46 PM PST

A friend of mine has the following build. He would like to upgrade his GPU, but all stores he contacted, said he could only go as far as 1660 super. Anything above that (1070ti, 1080/1080ti or anything above is a no go BECAUSE OF THE MOTHERBOARD). Can you help me try understanding why? If it was a PSU limitation, it would make sense to me. But when it comes to the MOBO, I don't understand their reasoning.

GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Gaming X 4G

    PSU: Seasonic S12II 520W

    SSD 2.5" Crucial MX500 250GB 3D TLC SATA

    CPU: Intel Core i5-7400

Motherboard: Micro-ATX Asus Prime B250M-A Disco

    HDD: Toshiba P300 1TB 7200RPM 64MB SATA III

    RAM G.SKILL Ripjaws V 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-2400MHz CL15 Vermelha

    Thanks in advance!

Ryzen 1700 in 2021 - hold or upgrade? where to go from here? (with 3080)

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 09:58 AM PST

Hello everyone, I'm looking to see if it's "worth" (I know that's subjective, but bear with me). upgrading my ryzen 1700. It's currently at base clock speeds with the stock Wraith Spire cooler (for some reason COD: Warzone doesn't play as friendly when I try to OC.)

    Specs

I'm running the 1700 with a Sapphire Nitro+ 580x, but I have the ASUS TUF 3080 OC that I will be swapping. I'm also running 1440p/144hz with gysync/freesync (Asus TUF VG27AQ).

    Use case

I do a fair amount of gaming, but also utilize the 8/16 for productivity. I know the 5600x/5900x is better value, but I'm going to keep it to 3700x/5800x for now.

Ideally I can keep this computer for a couple more years. I'm running everything with a 750W 80+gold PSU and the ASROCK x370 Taichi.

    1. My question is: should I upgrade the 1700? If yes, should I go for the 3700x or the 5800x?

    2. Or, if no BIOS come out, is the 1700 --> 3700x worth it for my case?

    • I know the 5800x isn't officially supported, but ASROCK did release a beta BIOS, and I'm waiting to see if a stable version will be released or not. Assuming a stable version comes out, is that jump to the 5800x worth it?
    • If I went with the 3700x I would MOST likely use the stock Wraith prism cooler. If the 5800x, I'd probably grab a Noctua DH-15 (which would up the cost more). For price context, the 3700x w/cooler is $440 CAD, whereas the 5800x w/noctua is approximately $800 CAD. If you consider taxes, that's essentially double the price.

As a side note: if anyone can give guidance as to why Warzone isn't OC friendly, or if I'm OC'ing it wrong, let me know).

If is was to get the 3060ti i would most likely use the saved money to buy an AIO. Any sort of help is welcome and i appreciate all of you.

    Wifi 6 adapter for PC

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 03:11 PM PST

I have a HP system (Product name: 750-170se; Product number: N3G97AV#ABA) that that I bought back in 2015 from Costco. It has a HP 2B4B 1.04 Motherboard which has

    • One M.2 socket 1, key A
    • One M.2 socket 3, key M

Quiet a few months back I did some online research and I installed a NVME SSD installed on one of these slots. I do not remember which one was it but I remember I installed an 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 SSD 500GB. Now I want to know can I use the other slot to put in a WiFi-6 card; I mean can I use both M.2 slots together?

My PC innately only supports 2.4 ghz, though right now I have a PCI card installed for 5 ghz. But I was wondering to get new router with wifi 6 capability so now I will like to ether get a new PCI card or M.2 card for wifi 6. Please suggest which slot and brand to go for

Are there any boards that are guaranteed to work with Ryzen 5000 out of the box?

Is it just a random chance that some will have the BIOS update and some won't? I don't really want to get another CPU just to get mine to work.

    Can DP 1.2 do 1440p 165?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 03:05 PM PST

Can display port 1.2 do 1440 165hz? My pc has displayport 1.4a and my monitor I've ordered G27q-20 has a displayport 1.2.

I've read that 1.2 is used for 1440p 144hz, but I can't find anything about if 165hz 1440p is possible?

I mean the monitor is advertised as a 1440p 165, so I guess it works? Again, I can't find the answer on Google.
