    Looking for a new laptop

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 09:48 PM PST

So I am not a tech person, but ever since the oandemic everything goes online, and I need a new laptoo. I am a college student (law school, so nothing to complicated for programs and stuff). I have a lenovo yogabook that works like shit. It used to work finw but after just 2 years it is gone to not working properly. It will get rebooted every few hours go hy and it will delete all my info. Also the fact that the keyboard is digital is exhausting for typing long documents which I do pretty much always. I ended up buying a bluetooth keyboard but it gets disconnected so easily because the laptop wont work. I am tired of having to switch devices every 2 years, I know a laptop needs to last longer, especially when I really dont overwork them. So I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a new computer for me. I dont own any apple products so no IOS for me. Thanks for listening to my rant.... I am just so annoyed by this thing I want to break it every morning I start school or work

    Laptop for architect

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 01:40 AM PST

Hi everyone! My friend is an architect and looking for a new laptop since her last one is no longer working. She doesn't have a Reddit so we are using my account.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
1000-2000EUR, Germany; but the more cost effective the better
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      YES, open to Refurbished
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance/Build quality is important to me, Form/Battery life not so much [Performance 1, Build Quality 2, Battery Life 3, Form 4)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
It'd be nice to have a light laptop but not a priority
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
At least 13", preferably 15" but I don't want to pay too much extra just for the screen size
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Programs:

    CAD/3D/Photo Editing:

Archicad(most importantly), Lumion/Enscape, (planning on learning Rhino) Adobe CC Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality(had problems with my dell), longevity, SSD
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Need a laptop for my PhD I can also game on (approx. £1200, UK)

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 08:23 AM PST

Hi everyone, here's the questionnaire below. Hope you can help me! I thought I'd found the perfect machine (Acer Predator Triton 300) but I just bought and returned two in a row because both had faulty batteries to the extent that the laptop would crash even while plugged in… so I'm looking for an alternative.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

£1000-£1200 (up to £1400 Dell because of the 20% student discount), UK

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

In this order: Performance, Build quality, Battery life, Form Factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not that important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Yes, 14-16 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Photo editing (Adobe Lightroom), occasional video editing, occasional gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Up to now I've played games like things like Skyrim, Bioshock, The Sims etc. but I'd like to do more gaming on the new laptop, since it's my tech that's holding me back at the moment. I don't know anything about FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Has to have a good keyboard, inbuilt webcam, and 2 USB ports. Also, ideally an HDMI port.

    1 TB storage.

    Min. 16 GB RAM.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't know much about processors, or the difference between SSD or HDD, or graphics cards.

I'm a PhD student so this laptop will get basically constant use. I want it to be fast, I want to watch Netflix and I want to be able to play some games on it.

I always use external speakers so the speakers really don't matter.

It will likely mainly live on a desk – the only time I'll be using its battery is if it follows me to the kitchen for an hour while I cook, or to the library or a cafe for a few hours. Battery life is not important to me, nor is it being particularly light. That said, I need it to be able to fit into my backpack so 17 inches is too big.

I want this laptop to last me a good few years, so good build quality is really important to me.

I would prefer a metal chassis, but not that fussy.

Excited and grateful for your thoughts.

Portable laptop for college and gaming

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 09:47 PM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • Preferably under $1000 (the cheaper the better), USA

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • New please

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Performance, battery life (around 6 hours), build quality, I don't need 2-in-1

How important are weight and thinness to you?

    • Very important to carry around campus. Under 5lbs

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • Under 15 inches

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • I'm an information systems major (maybe minor in computer science) so I'll be doing some coding and databases so it would have to run those smoothly. Light video editing.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Genshin Impact and Stardew Valley for now. Thinking about CS:GO, Valorant, Overwatch, GTA V as well.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • good keyboard and mousepad

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • Weight and battery is important for college. Also preferably quiet so it can run during classes. I don't play much games right now but I'd like to leave the option open for when I do.

    • I don't know much about laptops but I'm thinking about Lenovo Ideapad 5. Thoughts? Open to more suggestions of course.

Looking for a laptop for games and light college work. Ideally I'd like to spend no more than about $700 but I'm willing to go up if need be, that's just sort of a loose goal.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 10:10 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I'm targeting a budget of around $700 USD in the US, but as previously stated, I'm willing to go higher if I need to, or lower if possible. $1000 USD is my absolute max, but I'd really like to avoid that.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

I'm open to refurbs if they're from somewhere reputable, but I'd prefer to avoid used.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I would rather have a more traditional style laptop. I'm not interested in 2-in-1's, so I'd prefer no touch screens. I would say build quality and performance are my two priorities. I almost always have access to power outlets so battery life isn't as much of a concern for me. My school work is not hardware intensive at all so when I say performance I mean for games, however if at all possible I'd prefer something that doesn't look "gamery" in it's build quality.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'm fine with any weight, and thickness doesn't really bother me either within reason.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I'd probably prefer less than a 17". Maybe around 14"-15" if possible?

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll be playing Diablo 3, WOW (retail and classic), minecraft, and maybe a few other multiplayer games like CSGO/Gmod and some indies. Also for what it's worth, I plan on playing the upcoming Diablo 2 Resurrected,

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The games I plan on playing are Diablo 3, WOW, CSGO/Gmod, Minecraft, and maybe some indies in the same vain as Terraria. I'd like to be able to play at 1080p 60fps, at about medium ish settings. As long as it can be played at 1080p smoothly at something around medium I'll probably be happy. I have a desktop at home for the high settings so I'm not gonna be a stickler about maxing things out as long as it can play games smoothly.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Id like a decent keyboard but I'll probably use a wireless mouse so the trackpad isn't a huge deal to me. Also, I'm really hoping to find something that does scream "gamer" so if you all know of any options that look just like a regular laptop those suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Other than that I'm hoping to find something with reasonably ridgid build quality if possible.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I really appreciate y'all's help! I'm not sure what exactly I'll be able to find in my desired price range of around $700 USD. If money was no object this would be a much simpler choice, but a lot of my money is already going into a new desktop build once my tax return hits, so I'm hoping to find something a little more inexpensive to use while I'm on the go.

    Thanks!

    Looking for a laptop or a 2in1

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 04:07 AM PST

Obligatory im not a tech person warning. I've never had a nice computer, I've never had a computer that wasn't a second hand dinosaur. My old one dropped off the back of the couch and the screen shattered. (It had a short charger and it was the only place it could reach for me to put it down) I wasn't going to buy a new one because all I do is some light gaming, but my boyfriend suggest a 2 in 1 that I can use as a drawing tablet as well. So I dont need something super heavy duty, I don't stream or anything.

I just need something that can run a few small steam games, house flipper, thief simulator etc. But the big one is Sims 3, and several expansions.

If there is a 2 in 1 that has good specs for games, and could double as a tablet for a beginner digital artist, that's what I'm looking for.

If a gaming 2 in 1 tablet doesn't exist, just a clam shell that won't break the bank.

I dont care a whole lot about battery life, since my laptop never leaves my house.

I occasional discord D&D so I need a webcam, but I can sacrifice that if needed, because I have discord on my phone.

I'd dont need a huge screen, but enough of a work space to draw

I have a wireless mouse, so a cramped mouse pad doesn't bother me.

I dont wanna spend more that $700-800 but i will if I need to, but obviously id be very happy with spending less if it got me everything I needed.

If I left anything out please ask, and if anyone has any recommendations please let me know.

Looking for a decent laptop for video editing

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 03:50 AM PST

Hi everyone, I thought I'd come here before I dig into my research to get a couple of suggestions.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      - AU$1000 - AU$1500 - Purchasing in Australia.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
-ideally I would like to buy new, but open to good value refurbs
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      - Performance is key here as I intend on running photo and video editing software. I need a good accurate screen for colour also. A solid build with good battery would be an added bonus.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      - not too important but I'd prefer it a bit lighter
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
-I'm not too fussy on screen size, but would like 13-15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-I'll be working with photo and video editing. I'll be using Lightroom, Photoshop and After Effects/Da Vinci Resolve/LR Timelapse. No plans yet for gaming, although I understand a gaming laptop may be the best bet here.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      -
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      - At least 8gb RAM, 512 SSD. Need to have a colour accurate screen and a powerful processor.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      - Its important that I can edit photos and videos at a reasonable speed. My current laptop is a pile of shit, and takes hours at a time to complete tasks such as rendering RAW timelapses. I need something that will be efficient and able to handle a decent sized workload. Capability of rendering 4K video will also be very helpful.

I understand I might be expecting too much for my budget, but I'm just hoping there will be good valued laptops out there that doesn't have to cost a fortune. Is a gaming laptop my best option?

    Thanks!

Lenovo Legion 5, AMD or Intel?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 03:32 AM PST

I am planning to buy the Lenovo Legion 5, of the models that are available in my country, the one with an AMD Ryzen 7 has an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB graphics card, and the one with the Intel processor, has an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6GB graphics card. They both are being sold for the same price. My understanding is that AMD processors are better than Intel ones, but the RTX 2060 is better than the 1660 Ti.

I want to use the laptop to do things like video editing, 3D modelling and 3D model rendering, graphic design, and product design.

Which model should I go for?

Updated Laptop Request for my dad ($1500 AUD TOPS)

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 03:23 AM PST

I originally had a request up for suggestions for a 17 inch laptop, however after speaking to my dad a bit more his needs have changed.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1500 AUD top of the budget, preferably less. Country of purchase is Australia
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Standard laptop, touch screen is of no use, good build quality is prioritized. Decent performance such as 4 or 6 core low power cpu would be substantial. Graphics card such as hd 620 or better. Battery life of 3-4 hours is enough, will mostly be used at a desk plugged in 90% of the time. VERY open to Ryzen cpu and/or gpu laptops.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not super important unless it is notably thick, but even then who knows it could be fine. Weight not very important as the laptop will be plugged in at a desk most of the time.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
He prefers larger laptops, although he seems to be ok with an above average size 15.6" laptop, 17inch is not needed. 13 or 14 inch too small. Looking for a 300 nit minimum screen at 1080p, although 1440p would be appreciated. IPS Panel heavily preferred.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No video/photo editing, no gaming, possibly very light sketchup work, along with common office tasks. Will likely be running excel, and this may be the most intensive program on the laptop. Standard web browsing, office apps, and YouTube/netflix will be used most.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Will not be gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Nice keyboard and good quality trackpad and keyboard deck will be appreciated, and if any of these are too poor quality it will be a deal breaker. Reliable build quality and good customer service would be nice. Touch screen not important. Finger print reader not important.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
8gb ram minimum, although 16 would be appreciated, or a spare ram slot. 512gb ssd MINIMUM, this is important. Decent I/O (Audio jack, 2x USB type A, HDMI @ 4k 60fps, MINIMUM). Extra USB type A ports would be nice and a micro sd card slot would be greatly appreciated and used. Hopefully the fans aren't too loud, however my dad isn't too picky about fan noise.

    Searching for a "pocket" laptop/drawing tablet hybrid(8 - 11", US, $1400)

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 02:41 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1400 USD, US (ofc).

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

I think so? As long as I can assure it's going to be fully functional and not die in a year or two.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Form factor > Build Quality > Performance > Battery Life, but they're all kind of important really.

Form Factor: I think it's called a 2-in-1 Convertible? I'm not super familiar with these kind of laptops but I believe that's what they're called. Where the hinge can flip all the way so that the keyboard is behind the screen? I imagine that's rather essential to be able to draw on it. Speaking of which, one that comes with a stylus (or leaves enough money left-over in the budget to purchase a stylus it is compatible with) and is good for drawing/writing.

Build Quality: I accidentally cracked my HP Stream 11. It feels like cheap plastic. I don't really know much about how build quality materials work but I'd like it to... not do that if possible. (The HP Stream 11 bowed over time before cracking. I'm not entirely sure how it came to this but it was a slow process. Still, I've only had it like 2 years. It was just 80 bucks though.)

Performance: I actually have two different bars for performance depending on what the budget allows. Ideally, I'd want a CPU powerful enough for PCSX2 emulation (Emulation is mostly CPU intensive from what I understand?) But short of that being possible in the budget, (or possible enough without sacrificing too many other features), the bar becomes lower (I think?). Lower performance for lower price is preferable in that scenario, but I'd like enough for video playback/streaming, web browsing, Discord, multitasking, drawing, image editing (GIMP/Photoshop), and at its most extreme light video editing (Adobe Premiere), and for all but maybe that last thing to be quick, snappy, and responsive.

Battery Life: I think 3 hours under heavy load will probably serve me fine in 99% of situations, though I definitely would appreciate longer battery life so that I don't have to mount myself to the outlet while at home.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Pretty important, I'm looking for a small form factor I can carry with me easily.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I'm thinking somewhere around 8 - 11 inches, as I'm looking for something small, sleek, and easy to pack around. However I can be talked up to something a bit larger if it's still reasonably fit to carry around with me without a bag.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I don't think I'll be doing any major video editing. I might want to use premiere but not for much more than cutting a clip or joining a small handful of clips together. Any more complicated editing I'll be doing on my desktop. GIMP or Photoshop use might be common, Clip Studio Paint or Krita for drawing as well. I might be interested in trying Adobe Animate on the thing. The biggest gaming I'd hope to accomplish is PCSX2 and Dolphin emulation, but that is lower priority than other aspects of the design.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

60 FPS, 480p (since we're talking emulating old games) - 720p max. Not that I want my screen resolution capped at 720p, just I'm more than satisfied with that in any games I were to play on this thing.

Mostly Emulation, third through sixth gen, though gaming is low priority. Could be a fun aside.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Stylus with screen capable for drawing/writing is top priority. I'd prefer USB-A ports— I don't think a single device I own is USB-C, though I suppose I could use adapter. 250GB minimum disc space, though I'd prefer at least 500. HDMI and SD or microSD support might be nice but its low priority. I like pointing sticks/nubs more than trackpads but that is very low priority. I would like it to be sturdy enough to hold up under its own weight— in other words I'd like it to not require a kickstand in laptop mode. I plan to use it in my actual lap so... there won't always be an even surface for that. Speaking of portability, something that I can read in sunlight is practically mandatory.

Actual physical keyboard keys is important to me too, not a touchpad with keys on it. Tactile feedback is important to me. I don't have a lot of experience with "bad" keyboards other than a roll-up keyboard I definitely hated, so I'm not sure what "preferences" I have in keyboards really. Although the base of my HP Stream did have a rather sharp edge that kept cutting into my arms when typing so... something with less bodily harm would be pretty nice.

Oh, and Windows 10 x64. Not ARM or Android or ChromeOS or anything like that. I'd like to be able to run 64-bit .exe applications.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I saw this thing that got the gears turning; it was almost in my budget but the stylus wasn't included and would go over budget. Also, due to lack of knowledge in the mobile CPU space, I'm not sure if it's powerful enough to emulate PCSX2, and if not, I was curious what I might be able to get to still be able to accomplish everything else I wanted to do with it, perhaps at a better price.

EDIT: Apparently drawing applications take more resources than I thought? In which case ignore everything I said about PCSX2 because it sounds like it probably doesn't matter. And now it's more like is this even possible with my budget/at this size uh oh

    Affordable gaming laptop

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:05 PM PST

Hello! My old laptop is running very sluggishly and crashes frequently nowadays so I'm looking for a new one. I would like to stay within $1,100, preferably in the hundreds even, but would be willing to spend just a bit more if need be. My biggest must is the ability to run any modern game. I don't care about having the best FPS or anything like that, as I almost exclusively play single player games. I would also like at least 1 TB memory, although more would be great. Both gaming laptops I've had have been ROG but I'm willing to try any brand. Thanks!

    Laptop for work/ light gaming

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:29 PM PST

Hi guys! I have been looking for a laptop which is not too expensive (budget around $1200). For now I have narrowed down my choices to Asus A15, F15 and Strix G15

    The configs are as below

    A15 - Ryzen 7, 1650 TI, 15.6" 1080P 144Hz Anti-Glare IPS-level 45% NTSC

    F15 - Core™ i7-10750H, 1660 TI, 15.6" 1080P 144Hz Anti-Glare IPS-level 45% NTSC

    Strix G15 - Core™ i7-10750H, 15.6" FHD 1920x1080 IPS Level 144Mhz

P.S I couldn't find alot of reviews on the asus tuf f15 on youtube or any article reviews. If anyone who is using it please do let me know how it is. Also any tif a15 users hows the thermal and the build quality.

If anyone has other suggestions feel free to drop in

Better to look at just a laptop or laptop+additional device?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:27 PM PST

I'm still undecided... I got recommendations a while back. Since then I've saved a little more so will probably do an updated request with new budget.
And if this is the wrong place to ask such a thing, I'd appreciate a suggestion for a better sub- still learning my way around reddit.
I'm looking for something that's all around general purpose. Leaning 2 in 1 because I like the idea of being able to doodle ideas for projects. And may be starting a small business before the end of the year. Numeric keypad is a must for me for multiple reasons and I prefer 15"+ screens. I don't do much gaming these days, but might still run a game here and there- I'm still a "There is no cow level" fan. ;) And will likely get Diablo IV if/when it comes out.
Then I got to wondering if it would make more sense to go with a lower cost general purpose laptop and a secondary tablet for doing the doodling parts. Because as I look at the hybrids and the size required for the numeric keypad with is a must have for me- I wonder about the ease of managing such a large device for the sake of my doodling (mainly for pottery, mosaic, sewing, woodworking type hobbies).
Suggestions? Real world experience for pros/cons for one device, vs 2?

    Thanks

Need laptop for school and light gaming ($1200 usa)

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 06:36 PM PST

I'm going to be going to school for a master's in CS. I am looking to do some light to moderate gaming, but would appreciate the ability to play newer titles as well. Most of my gaming is currently indie or older stuff (think Terraria for indie, Fallout 1 for older). I would like an AMD processor. RGB keyboard is cool but not a dealbreaker. My budget is ~$1200.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:$1200/usd
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?Would prefer new, but if it's a can't-miss then I am
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Performance, build quality, battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?Thinner and lighter is better so long as it's built well
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15in
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Games: older and indie titles from steam, but enough power to run some newer titles. Software development
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Nothing specific
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? RGB keyboard would be nice but it isn't a must-have
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I'd like an AMD processor and a dedicated GPU
