Is there anything simple and good like Voicemeeter in linux?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 10:00 AM PST

Basically topic. I want to be able to modify my mic input while on a call, or while streaming. I found an excellent video on voicemeeter and I tried it on wine, but the setup is difficult for me.

So, I was just wondering if there are some alternatives native to linux (manjaro)

On my keyboard when I press 'Fn key' + 'Window Key' my Linux system shutsdown even in Login Screen. Is this a system level shortcut common for linux as this happens on Linux Mint Cinnamon and Awesome WM. But key combination not work with KDE and XFCE DE's (Desktop Environments).

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 08:24 AM PST

I check with Linux Mint(Debian) and Manjaro Linux (Arch Linux). When I press 'Fn_key + Win_Key' the system shutdown at the spot without any confirmation and interesting thing is that if I press this key combination even at the login screen (after system restart) the system will shutdown. While when I login into KDE DE and press this key combination this is not happening and same thing for XFCE DE too.. This problem occur when I am on Awesome WM and on login-screen. Many people suggested it's out of control of OS and something at kernel level. As on below image it showing something related to systemd like that.

Sometimes ago I thought it was problem with Awesome WM, but close inspection on system log reveals that 'power key is pressed' and this confuses me until now when I found the right key combination for this shutdown. Also Awesome WM developers said it's beyond the control of Awesome WM and something at kernel level. This is true, because I can shutdown even at my login-in screen as at that time no Desktop Environment or Window Manager is yet loaded. I am confused is this built-in shortcut like something related to "Linux Magic System Request Key", but based on the documentation it's SysRq key.

See it's showing Power Key Pressed

When I press the key combination in Linux Mint Cinnamon Desktop it pop this confirmation as in below picture, while KDE Desktop on Manjaro it doesn't work at all. For Awesome WM on both Debian and Arch Linux it work without confirmation. Also in login screen of both Linux Distro no confirmation, direct shutdown. So really this is any shortcut in Linux Kernel level ??

    Zip: Binary vs Text mode?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:28 AM PST

Can someone help me understand when to use the -B option to tell Zip to use binary mode versus the default mode of text? I know what a binary file is and I know what a text file is, but I don't get why you'd use one over the other when compressing something

Can't switch to Nvidia Drivers without freezing.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 10:05 AM PST

I've a computer with 1 storage HDD, 1 HDD with Ubuntu, and 1 SSD with Windows. I've recently installed Ubuntu 2.10 on Ubuntu, but I have to edit Grub with "nomodeset" as per this tutorial, just to get to the login screen on initial install.

However, Ubuntu still won't detect my second monitor. Whenever I try to install one of the Nvidia Drivers, Ubuntu will no longer load up. It'll just get stuck at the loading screen (the black screen with the circular loading symbol, and I've had to re-install Ubuntu several times already.

I've tried Nvidia-driver-460 and 450, with my only other option being 390 (aside from the Server Options). I'm afraid to try 390 because I feel like I'm just doing something wrong! I don't know what to do.

Edit: Also, for further context, I have an Nvidia GTX 970, with an ASUS Z170 Motherboard.

Trying to get an Arduino working on my arch install, but I can't figure it out.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 10:56 AM PST

Hey there, I decided to dust off my Arduino kit, and mess around with it. I got the IDE working, but I keep running into this one error, and I have no clue how to fix it. I've discovered this post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=263648, but I don't understand it. I tried following one of the command guides, but I ran into "==> ERROR: One or more PGP signatures could not be verified!". Does anyone have any advice?

Are there any small simple musl busybox source based distribution?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:57 AM PST

I am looking for a musl libc, busybox, libressl, preferably runit, (but would be okay with openrc), source based distribution. If you know of anything that fits the description please tell me. The only things I know of that fit the description are gentoo, which will take a while to get working musl busybox instead of gnu core utils, alpine, which is very close, but is binary based, and void, also binary based. If you know of anything that fits this description, please inform me of it.

edit, though I would add kiss also fits the description, but its website is down, and a lot of its packages are unmaintained.

What donation startegy do you recommend for your favorite free software projects?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:09 PM PST

So I've been using Linux for a while and believe its important to start giving back financially. However I'm sort of confused how to go about this.

I have a set budget of $X a year; and I've been compiling a list of the free software that I use on a daily basis (from distro to browser plug-ins) that I would like to financially support. I'm sure I've missed some because there are just so many I use.

But the biggest confusion is that I don't know how to allocate those funds. You could argue that I should donate the most to the project that I use the most (in this case distro and DE), but the problem with that approach is that I feel those projects already get a ton of support (relatively) and maybe I should focus my efforts on the (seemingly) small proejcts that everyone ignores.

The problem with the latter approach is that, well $X isn't a lot, and I'm giving a fraction of that to a small project. It really isn't enough to sustain the project by any means. While I'm sure the gesture will be appreciated, I'm wondering if it will do any good?

Also, what if these projects close, now I need to find an alternative and I'm out of cash also. If Antergos closes, its large enough that a replacement (like Endeavor) will fork it and come in. I'm not sure the same will happen for some of these niche phone software and browser plug-ins.

I'd be interested in hearing some feedback on how you guys recommend proceeding. Is it really worth donating to FireFox, something that I use ALL the time, but already makes 9 figures from Google? Will my pathetic donation mean anything to them?

    Thanks

Edit: If you guys want, I'd be interested in you sharing a list of the projects you donate to. Just incase I've missed something.

Edit 2: well its hypocritical for me to ask you guys to share your lists, but not share mine. Here's what i'm looking at donating to (don't judge)

Firefox, Distro, KDE, EFF, Ublock Origin, Lutris, Lineage, TOR, Signal, Libre Office, NewPipe, & Simple Tools

    Managing software built from source?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 09:01 AM PST

I'm using Linux mint + gnome, and I've already gotten comfortable with the basics of using apt. (I'm coming from MacOS, where I have homebrew, so a CLI package manager is already very familiar to me.)

I've had to add a few repositories here and there to get some of the software I wanted, once I've had to download an actual .deb, but recently, I wanted to install vimpager. I couldn't find it in the repos I already had available, couldn't find any repos I could use that it was in (probably was there somewhere, but I couldn't find it), so I eventually caved, went to the GitHub page for vimpager, git cloned it, checked for dependencies and build dependencies on the page, and built and installed it.

If I'm not mistaken, it'll now be a headache to update it or purge it from my system, having to manually delete all the files associated with it, manually check for updates, and build the latest version if updating. Am I wrong about that?

What would've been the better way to go about that? (Assuming a piece of software actually wasn't already packaged in a way I can install, and assuming it would work on my system if I compiled it myself.)

Is there a way to compile and package it myself into a .deb and install it via apt so that apt can remove/purge it for me, or to update it to the latest if I compile and package the latest version?

My knowledge is pretty lopsided. I'm very familiar with a lot of command line stuff from Mac, I use a lot of software on my Mac that originated on Linux or is inspired by stuff exclusive to Linux (Kitty terminal, gimp, Inkscape, amethyst (Mac TWM loosely inspired by xmonad), etc). But there's a lot of stuff I just don't know yet, and I've been learning a lot, but I still feel like my knowledge is very lopsided.

How did I mess up this ffmpeg command?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:04 AM PST

I have a ~19 second avi (video) file from which I only really wanted about 5-6 seconds of footage. Specifically, I wanted the footage from the :02 mark to the :09 mark, give or take.

    > file input.avi input.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 1280 x 720, 30.00 fps, video: XviD

I tried the following ffmpeg command:

    ffmpeg -ss "00:00:02" -i ./input.avi -vcodec "copy" -acodec "copy" -t "00:00:09" ./output.avi

This created an output avi file, but I would describe it as "malformed". It consisted of a random still-frame from the video for about 80% of the duration followed by the tail end of the video, a portion which should have been cut off. If I decreased the end time, ffmpeg would output a 0kb file which contained no video data.

I also tried switching to specifying the number of desired frames, but had no success there either.

    ffmpeg -ss "00:00:02" -i ./input.avi -vcodec "copy" -acodec "copy" -frames 150 ./output.avi

Through trial and error, I found that if I changed the start point to "00:00:01" and increased the end point such that it was about 8 seconds the outputted video contained no still frames and worked well enough.

I don't know much about ffmpeg, but I didn't see anything in the man page that would explain this. How did I mess up?

Java playback stream IEC958 not playing sound

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 12:12 PM PST

I've been playing Minecraft on debian for a month now and I still don't know how to get this to work. I try to change it to the HDMI (i use a TV as a monitor so I have less wires around the workspace because it already has speakers) but it stays at the default IEC958. I'm not the main owner of the computer and I share it with my dad so i'm kind-of scared to use a terminal and I'm not sudo.

Can't Exit Python Shell in Terminal

I recently installed Python3 on Linux Mint, and anytime I open the terminal it automatically starts up the Python shell without me having to type "python3". I'm trying to exit this to get back to my main system shell but anytime I type exit(), quit() or CTRL + C or D it automatically closes the terminal window without taking me back to the main terminal.

    Cannot enter recovery mode.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 02:55 PM PST

I apologize for posting twice, but I have a separate issue from my first one. I don't think it has anything to do with my Nvidia card, but I am forced to deal with it after switching to the Nvidia driver.

I can't enter recovery mode. Whenever I try, I just get stuck at the following line:

    "[*** ] A start job is running for /dev/disk/by-uuld/0633-6E8A (6s / 1min 30s)"

I've waited over an hour to see if it would go away.

It's making it very difficult to troubleshoot my driver issue. I can't login at all. I've reinstalled Ubuntu several times.

    Any cons to PureOS?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 08:33 AM PST

I think I want to use PureOS as my daily driver. I like the way it looks and feels. It's straightforward it seems.

I mean, it's based on Debian, so that's a good thing (right?). I want to use it just for browsing and virtual machines.

    Is this good enough?

Cronjobs and Linuxgsm advice for a noob

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 06:46 AM PST

So im pretty new to Linux, Ive only been using it for about 4 days now. I had installed it on an older pc to use Linuxgsm to run game servers. Using Linuxgsm I set up a Valheim server that has been running fine for the last 3 days. With that said I tried to set up cronjobs to update, backup and restart the server but i found out today while at work that the server is down. I think what im messing up is the path to the server script. Here is the instructions i use to set up the server, https://linuxgsm.com/lgsm/vhserver/ following those instructions i believe the path is home/vhserver but i used these cronjobs i found on a site that followed those same instructions. Did i do something wrong? Is there something I need to change? I think the cronjob may have update Lgsm without restarting the server after. Unfortunately im stuck at work for 24 hours (I work on an ambulance) and I cant see what really happened until tomorrow. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated

    */5 * * * * /home/vhserver/vhserver monitor > /dev/null 2>&1 */30 * * * * /home/vhserver/vhserver update > /dev/null 2>&1 0 0 * * 0 /home/vhserver/vhserver update-lgsm > /dev/null 2>&1 30 1 * * * /home/vhserver/vhserver backup > /dev/null 2>&1

Using Crontab to make sure NFS drive is mounted and system is on latest update/upgrade

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 01:14 PM PST

I'm very new at using Ubuntu and basically what I've done successfully now is running a Plex server with NFS mounted drives (a Synology drive) modifying the fstab on Ubuntu 20.04.

Now sometimes I lose power and the synology takes more time than the Server to reboot and the fstab therefore doesn't work. It might also be that the synology will reboot after updates and therefore I want to run the mount -a function regularly to make sure the NFS drives are always mounted.

I also want to run updates and upgrades reguarly to make sure all is good with the server.

The simplest way to do this I found what to use Crontab. However I suspect it doesn't work because everytime I try to search for updates/upgrades manually I get a ton of them...

    Here is what I did:

sudo crontab -e #sudo needed for actions needing admin rights

#then added at the end of the file

    0 6 * * * mount -a #mount at 6am everyday

    0 18 * * * mount -a #mount at 6pm everyday

    30 4 * * * apt update #run updates at 4:30am everyday

    35 4 * * * apt upgrade #run upgrades at 4:35am everyday

I've also tried to add the option to receive email but it would need to create a mail server which looked a bit overkill for that I want to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!
