How to stay safe with Win7

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 05:35 PM PST

I have my old laptop Thinkpad T60. Looks great after years in the basement. Its not compatible with Win10. And I know Microsoft stopped giving security updates. Is there advice to keeping this safe and free from issues ? Do you think AntiVirus/MAlware is good enough as security updates ? Anything else ?

Windows may have bricked my PC after trying to update itself. Help!

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:49 PM PST

My brother went to start our PC this morning and it forced an update which didn't start but instead showed a frozen blue screen. He shut it down and now when you turn it on, it loads up the Gateway screen (I can access BIOs and boot menu) then it loads a black screen with the windows logo on it and a spinning circle for a little bit. It turns black, flashes a grey "windows is updating" screen for half a second, and then the PC restarts. It does this on an endless loop.

I've loaded up a ISO USB and am trying to troubleshoot the issue.

Startup repair says it can't repair my PC

I've tried to uninstall both quality and feature updates but I get an error that says "we ran into a problem and won't be able to uninstall the latest quality update of windows."

I don't know where to go from here and I don't want to wipe my computer completely. Can it be saved? Any help appreciated.

Why do my Windows updates CONSISTENTLY fail and plague my computer with performance issues?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:42 PM PST

I can provide details but I don't even know what to provide, literally every single time my computer has a Windows update, the obly way I figure it out is due to my computer capping disc usage and stuttering every 5 seconds. I have to consistently delete the files, manually reinstall, muck about in the services and task manager tabs etc to get the update to work.

It pisses me off beyond repair and happens at the most inconvenient times. I have no viruses as far as I am aware, don't download much of anything unless through Steam, have good anti-virus and yet still something seems to be wrong. Anyone else experience the same?

Why does Windows silently background update and slow down my computer? How can I change this?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:28 PM PST

I no longer get any sort of notification or information regarding Windows updates. I simply will have an update begin installation randomly throughout the month, usually not even on the correct day (i.e. Feb 02 cumulative update occurring on Feb 12).

I only notice when it happens because my computer will be chippy and laggy, and following a task manager check I'll notice 100% disc usage constantly for the update. Super annoying and fairly sure the update will fail and repeat every time I turn my laptop on/off creating a permanent performance decrease until I manually update.

How do I change this? Stop even updating at all seeing how the bloody laptop can't do it itself and throws itself into a failure loop. At least notify me.

Has anyone else had this happen to them?! Curious because it seems like a ploy to reduce functionality, make people expand their OneDrive space and give Microsoft money..

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 06:45 PM PST

So my OneDrive is finally full, no big. However, any thumbnails of images from after it has filled up that can't sync up just don't show, even just looking at them in your regular images folder.. to say it's a little frustrating would probably be an understatement. I look at thumbnails most of the time to see what I'm looking for rather than titles as I'm sure most would.

Contacting Microsoft about it now but just curious to see if anyone else has noticed this? It seems like a ridiculous ploy by reducing functionality to make people expand their OneDrive and pay Microsoft.

Edit: Solution in the comments hope people find this useful.

    RDP without locking host?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 02:33 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

So I've only recently become aware of the Pen Remoting feature added to RDP with windows 10. This is a really great addition imo as it can potentially allow me to use pen input on my desktop through my much weaker toshiba laptops wacom panel. However it will be way easier if I could use RDP without locking the host so my laptop can essentially work as an additional monitor. Does anyone know a method of achieving this?

    Thanks in advance!

Windows 10 is Damaging my hearing (System sounds hard set to 100%)

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 02:25 PM PST

    Hi,

Windows update is annoying enough as is, but this is a danger to my health.

I have a sound system, I have a volume mixer built into windows. I can not set Windows system sound volume, it is hard locked at 100% there is not even a volume slider for it. One can only disable system sounds in control panel.

Every time I update windows, It turns system sounds back on, at 100% volume. Everything else on my computer is at 20% volume.

I might make a recording tomorrow, As my headset is also to blame for this (USB headset at 3000% volume Steel series 3h USB)

Is there any way I can tell Microsoft to stop intentionally damaging my hearing every time I update windows?

The volume my Soundsystem is set to, my choice. The volume that windows sets for itself is their choice. If this choice damages my hearing Are they not at fault?

I have adjusted all other volumes in windows, and yet, windows still sets system sounds to 100%.

There is no notification of such changes being made, the only way I find out is by damaging my hearing when windows starts blasting notification for bullshit at 1000% volume.

Any ideas? At this point, I am thinking of getting legal advice.

Also Fuck you guys who made HALO MCC, the Volume for the GOD DAMN Splash Screen is Again hard-locked at 100%. I literally have to rip off my headset on mute the volume because it's soo fucking loud.

Gee, I wonder how many other people are experiencing hearing loss from software at 100% volume...

IT HAS fucking slider for a reason 50% would be nice you stupid cunts.

I Still have pain in my ears because of Todays windows update.
