Grad School Laptop: I need the ultimate multitasking laptop.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:39 PM PST

So I got accepted to grad school, yay! So that means I need to find a new laptop.

I have my Surface Pro 4 hooked up to a 4k monitor and it slows down a lot because of how many applications and tabs I have open. I run a virtual desktop for each of my 4 classes and 2 research positions. I usually have like 15 browser tabs open, multiple heavy excel sheets, word docs, pdfs etc. I also sometimes have video calls and YouTube videos playing in the background. As a result my laptop heavily slows and fans turn on to the max.

I sorta use it as a desktop alternative since I need to be able to take my work with me but also want to use the monitor while I work from home. I also hope to run two monitors too, 4k 60hz and 4k 144hz. As far as size goes I really don't mind but I don't want a behemoth gamers rise up type laptop. I've been looking at the surface laptop or surface book but don't mind using alternatives.

My budget is around 1k to 1.5k in the US. Any help would be appreciated

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I dont really care about battery life since I'm always going to be close to a plug. I care more performance, then quality build. I don't want a 2 in 1 since I have a dedicated tablet for notes.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not very important but don't want an overly large laptop. I do want a large screen however, something like the 15in surface laptop which hasa near 4k screen. Do oleds exist yet?

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

-15in near 4k like the surface laptop. I like big screens. No need for high refresh rates.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No gaming, video editing etc. Maybe some python coding but likely won't be heavy.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No gaming, I have an Xbox

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Not really. If anything I want a pretty screen.

Hp Spectre x360 2-in-1 or Dell XPS 2-in-1 for an engineering student who wants to take notes digitally?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:09 PM PST

Title. I didn't fill out the questionnaire because I already have two candidates to choose from. Basically I want a laptop that I can take notes on and use CAD and Matlab on without it exploding.

FYI I'm too poor to get both an iPad and a laptop so please don't suggest it

If you have any other recommendations please drop them below

**UPDATED 2/27/21 WITH PREVIOUSLY MISSING INFORMATION** Laptop For Podcasting/YouTubing/Voice Over Work

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 09:18 PM PST

(Updated 2/27/21 with previously missing information)

    **BUYING IN USA**

I'm finally getting off my arse and am starting to go after some things I've always wanted to do.

Dreams without goals are just dreams.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Between $800 - $1,500

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Possibly, depending on what, if any, preloaded software comes with it.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

The only thing really is for it to be a laptop and would be considered whatever manufacturer's "work horse" model, like the old IBM ThinkPad T43's. It will stay plugged in and used only for what I am purchasing it for so battery life is inconsequential.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    **UPDATED 2/27/21 WITH COMPLETE INFORMATION**

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Preferably, 15 inches but 90% of the time I'll have it hooked up to my dual monitors so it's flexible.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I plan on learning how to do video and photo editing.

Not sure on the software yet.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I will not be gaming, I'm an old fart.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Nope.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This pretty much sums it all up for me!

2-in-1 for coding in College under $2000 in Singapore

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 12:26 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Preferably below $1600 SGD, but I can stretch to $2000 if it's worth it.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Needs to be a 2-in-1 as I also plan to use it sideways in tent mode when lazing about on the bed watching shows or browsing. Battery life needs to be pretty good too, ideally 10h or more.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I don't think any 2-in-1's are heavy enough to be an issue.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Not using it for gaming, so enough grunt to do typical uni/college coding stuff and watch videos is enough.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I feel like everything should have this already but x265 (10bit included) hardware decoding would be pretty important for battery life while watching shows.

A vibrant screen would be nice (accuracy isn't important) since I'm moving from a tablet to this for media consumption.

I don't need to buy it straight away, so if there's anything that's worth waiting for before August this year feel free to recommend those too.

Which of these 2 in 1s would you recommend as the best pick for gaming.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:31 PM PST

Wondering out of these 3 which you would go with for best value for the money with gaming as the primary use.

Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel - $1925: 10th Generation Intel Core i7-10750H 6-Core Processor (Up to 5.0GHz), NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 with 4 GB of dedicated GDDR6 VRAM - NVIDIA Studio Laptop, 14.0" Full HD (1920 x 1080) widescreen LED-backlit IPS Corning Gorilla Glass 5 anti-glare display with integrated touch and stylus support, PANTONE Validated, Delta E <2, 400nit Brightness, 16:9 aspect ratio, 100% sRGB, Acer ColorBlast Technology, 16GB DDR4 Onboard Memory, 512GB M.2 PCIe SSD & SD Card Reader.

    Yoga 9 - $2299:10th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-10750H Processor (2.60 GHz, up to 5.00 GHz with Turbo Boost, 6 Cores, 12 Threads, 12 MB Cache), NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1650 Ti 4GB, 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, touchscreen with Dolby Vision™, HDR 400, 500 nits, 16 GB DDR4 2933MHz (Soldered), 512GB SSD

    Hp spectre x360 15 - $2274.99: Intel® Core™ i7-10750H (2.6 GHz base frequency, up to 5 GHz with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology, 12 MB L3 cache, 6 cores), NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1650 Ti with Max-Q design dedicated graphics, 15.6" diagonal 4K touch display, 16 GB DDR4-2666 SDRAM (onboard), 1TB SSD

If there is one I may be missing I'm open to suggestions as long as it's a 2 in 1. (I realize I can get a better traditional gaming laptop for cheaper but I'm specifically looking for a 2 in 1) Thanks in advance!

Discreet Gaming Laptop? Max 1,500 USD

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 11:22 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      - 1,500 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      - Yes, pretty much open to refurbs/used.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      - Battery life first, Performance. Non 2-in-1 form factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      - Not so much. I was considering getting the LG Gram before due to the weight of the laptop specifically when used for work.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      - 17 in screen display. Like my 6 year old Dell 7559 laptop.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      - I haven't done any photo editing, mostly programing and documentations. If not that, I'm gaming. Games that I used to run before was Steam games like Destiny 2, Guild Wars 2, No Man's Sky and other FPS games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      - I'd like to experience playing at full/excellent settings for games like Destiny 2 or No Man's Sky. I haven't really tried other resource intensive games released recently for a past year or two.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      - What I liked about the Dell 7559 was the serviceability of the Laptop. I was able to upgrade most components that I have under the latch (RAM, Wifi Card, mechanical to SSD, battery). I was also able to replace the screen without issues.
Good thermals just like the Dell 7559. Also, the battery was great with my Dell 7559 back then, I remember I used to get more than 6 hours out of it if I'm not gaming.
I also really liked the speakers of my Laptop as well. I was able to make use of this fully on meetings and concalls.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      - I guess I'm looking for a laptop that's not totally a full fledged gaming laptop, but can still run most games with very satisfactory performance. Since the Dell 7559 has been my only laptop since I bought it, I have never looked into other laptops from manufacturers like ASUS, ACER, MSI... Should I still go with Dell laptops Like the G series ones?

Thank you so much guys for your inputs.

    Gaming laptop max 1300$

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:21 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1300 USD (willing to go slightly above if there's an insane deal)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Performance, thermals, battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Should be portable in a backpack (definitely not more than 6 pounds)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15'6, not more, not less.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Laptop will primarily be used for gaming. I would like to play new AAA games on decent graphics (ultra definitely not a requirement, med to high would be nice)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

50+ fps at mid/high settings in newer triple AAA games and others, like strategy and sports games. I would like an RTX 2070 or better, cause I can get the 2060 for 1000$ and my budget would allow for a better one.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Does need to have a good keyboard cause Ill also be doing schoolwork on it. My primary goal of buying it is to have longevity, I would like to own it for at least 3+ years, thus build quality and thermals are important to keep the hardware running. Otherwise I know that in +3 years my budget laptop might not be able to play AAA games on ultra high settings but thats not what looking for and Im okay with that.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Any tips appreciated! Im not sure whether to wait for new releases like the legion 5 pro since they will most likely be out of my budget anyways

I've been canvassing Dell G3 or G5 (because my brother uses it,he does some video editing), Dell Inspiron 14 or 15 series (it looks cool to my eyes), Asus TUF or Acer in malls and pop shop.

Cabal Online can play in low specs but it suffers new dungeons so yea needs more powerful processor.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      $1300 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      New only

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

2-in-1 with a pen. Performance should be good enough to run photoshop or similar things and use streaming services. Better build quality and battery life are a plus, but not too priority.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not the most important but I'm definitely drawn to thinner and lighter devices.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Generally prefer smaller, but I can compromise on this.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'd like to get into photo and video editing but don't know which programs I would use yet. Would like it to at least run common things like photoshop or adobe illustrator

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

running minecraft would be a plus but is not mandatory.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I need to be able to use a pen and not have the screen pick up on my hand resting on the screens surface.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Problems I ran into with my last laptop that I'd like to avoid are lots of bloatware, excessive heat, and fussy hinges/frame on screen. My last laptop was some sort of lenovo ideapad of some sort. It felt overcomplicate and moody after awhile, so I think I'd prefer something more simple.

    Hope that's enough information!

$1600 Productivity Laptop Suggestion - USA

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 11:56 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
    • -Around $1,600+/-
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
    • -No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    • -Ultrabook, Build quality, battery life, performance
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
    • -Somewhat important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    • -13"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
    • -Productivity is all run on my companies VDI (remote desktop). I remote into a remote workstation capable of running AutoCAD Civil 3D. When I'm not working, I'll use it for browsing, Youtube, etc...
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    • -Playing WoW and COD, not too concerned about having a dGPU since I have a RTX 2070 that I'm going to throw in an eGPU enclosure. The eGPU will also act as my docking station when at home using my 49" ultrawide monitor.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    • -Build quality needs to be good.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    • -Currently have a 13" M1 Macbook Pro, I love everything about it except it doesn't play nice with my company's VDI client (Workspot). I'm thinking its the Rosetta translation software slowing things down in the remote environment and the Windows client being on top of MacOS. Since I bought it for working from home I need something that actually works just as well as my Windows desktop, so I need Windows/Intel.
    • I want something that has excellent build quality and great/good battery life
    • I game but don't need a laptop with a dedicated GPU since I'll be docking the laptop on an eGPU enclosure, something I couldn't do with the Macbook. So TB4 would be really nice. My monitor is a 49" 5120x1440 capable of 120hz.
    • I'm considering the Razer Book 13 and XPS 13, however, I'm reading a lot of QC issues with those laptops. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Looking for a desktop replacement (Ryzen 7 3700x, RTX 2070, 512gb NVME, 16gb ram).

Suggestions for Audio/video production laptop, $1,200

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 06:15 PM PST

    Hey folks,

So I recently bought an ASUS TUF706IU with plans to use it for audio recording/editing and video editing as well but unfortunately ran into a slew of problems (unsuccessfully) trying to get my audio interface connected to this thing and recently finding out the quality of audio produced from this laptop is dismal. It's very bad, like potato quality bad. I'm sending the thing back asap but now I'm back in the market for a decent laptop.

I have a good machine back home so I'm just looking for something to be able to take on the go, to my studio to record or be able to edit some video while I'm out and about. I bought the the Asus because it has a decent amount of RAM, processor and GPU (AMD Ryzen 7 4800H Eight-Core, 1660Ti, 16gb RAM), but I don't intend to use the laptop for any gaming, despite the name. Does anybody have suggestions for a similar laptop within this price range, that has non-spud audio quality, and perhaps has a reputation for being a good audio production PC? Price up to $1,200, a good processor for recording audio, decent amount of RAM (probably 8gb minimum) and a decent GPU for video editing. 1Tb SSD is a plus and larger screen size for clarity in edits, but could probably do with a 15".

Any and all suggestion are welcome, many thanks in advance!

Spilled coffee on my macbook - need a replacement ASAP

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 06:28 AM PST

Well yup, been beating myself up over it ever since but a couple days ago I spilled coffee all over my MacBook Pro. It shut off immediately and I got rid of as much as I could then let it sit upside down in front of a fan for a couple days. I turned it and it seemed to work but made a weird crackling noise and the battery is definitely bad, I get a little service required notification and if I unplug the laptop it shuts off immediately even though it says there is plenty of battery left.

I'm bringing it to micro center today to see if there's any shot at saving it, but not counting on it. So I'm looking for a replacement but I really don't know much about computers. I use it for personal use and grad school where I need to do some coding in R and use ArcGIS, which I did on my MacBook using boot camp. I love my MacBook and have always used apple so I'm comfortable with it and like the way it connects with my phone, so I prefer apple but am open to a windows as well. I know I can't get a new MacBook because I need boot camp and also money, but am open to an older one (the one I have currently is from 2015 but was brand new to me, bought it like new just two months ago RIP) or like I said I'm also open to a windows, but if I'm buying a whole new computer I would like it to last a while.

The only specs I know I need are 8 gb of ram and at least 500 gb of storage.

My budget is ideally $1000, but I could go up to $1500 if I really need to. I'm in the middle of a very busy time and finals are right around the corner so this has been a huge blow, and I need a new laptop ASAP, as in hopefully this weekend or even today. Any advice/recommendations are greatly appreciated! And don't be like me...keep your coffee far far away.

Any other suggestions before I buy?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 05:44 PM PST

Hi, I am looking at the Asus Zenbook Flip 15. I am leaning towards buying it, however I wanted to make sure I am not missing any laptops in my considerations. I currently have a Dell laptop that I am very happy with, so I was not sure if there are any Dell models in that similar price range I should look at, like the new Inspiron or XPS models. If you would like to see my laptop questionnaire form you can see it here. I have also heard very good things about the Lenovo thinkpad series, and I could possibly sacrifice the touchscreen if other specs make up for it, and it is in a similar or lower price range.

Thank you very much! I just want to make sure I am making the right decision, and haven't left out any other options.
