Grad School Laptop: I need the ultimate multitasking laptop. Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:39 PM PST So I got accepted to grad school, yay! So that means I need to find a new laptop. I have my Surface Pro 4 hooked up to a 4k monitor and it slows down a lot because of how many applications and tabs I have open. I run a virtual desktop for each of my 4 classes and 2 research positions. I usually have like 15 browser tabs open, multiple heavy excel sheets, word docs, pdfs etc. I also sometimes have video calls and YouTube videos playing in the background. As a result my laptop heavily slows and fans turn on to the max. I sorta use it as a desktop alternative since I need to be able to take my work with me but also want to use the monitor while I work from home. I also hope to run two monitors too, 4k 60hz and 4k 144hz. As far as size goes I really don't mind but I don't want a behemoth gamers rise up type laptop. I've been looking at the surface laptop or surface book but don't mind using alternatives. My budget is around 1k to 1.5k in the US. Any help would be appreciated

Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:09 PM PST Title. I didn't fill out the questionnaire because I already have two candidates to choose from. Basically I want a laptop that I can take notes on and use CAD and Matlab on without it exploding. FYI I'm too poor to get both an iPad and a laptop so please don't suggest it If you have any other recommendations please drop them below [link] [comments] |

Need a programmer/photographer’s laptop. Posted: 27 Feb 2021 01:26 AM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
£800 - £1200
No
Performance, Battery Life, Build Quality, something that doesn't have bad fan issues
Not Important
Docker, Kubernetes Containers, Programming IDE's, DA Vinci Resolve, Lightroom, Photoshop, Capture One
HDMI Ports, Good WiFi Drive, Ethernet, Good Keyboard, Multiple USB ports for external storage access
I'm going to be using this thing a lot so would like something that is able to handle a lot of work and multiple processes at once.. nothing with fan/thermal issues as i might not always be using this laptop at a desk. I'm torn on whether to just get a MacBook Air but the new usb4/thunderbolt only ports and lack of Ethernet access is a turnoff Thanks for your suggestions. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Feb 2021 09:18 PM PST (Updated 2/27/21 with previously missing information) **BUYING IN USA** I'm finally getting off my arse and am starting to go after some things I've always wanted to do. Dreams without goals are just dreams. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Between $800 - $1,500 Are you open to refurbs/used? Possibly, depending on what, if any, preloaded software comes with it. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? The only thing really is for it to be a laptop and would be considered whatever manufacturer's "work horse" model, like the old IBM ThinkPad T43's. It will stay plugged in and used only for what I am purchasing it for so battery life is inconsequential. How important is weight and thinness to you? **UPDATED 2/27/21 WITH COMPLETE INFORMATION** Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably, 15 inches but 90% of the time I'll have it hooked up to my dual monitors so it's flexible. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I plan on learning how to do video and photo editing. Not sure on the software yet. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I will not be gaming, I'm an old fart. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nope. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This pretty much sums it all up for me! [link] [comments] |

$1300 USD (willing to go slightly above if there's an insane deal)
Performance, thermals, battery life.
15'6, not more, not less.
Laptop will primarily be used for gaming. I would like to play new AAA games on decent graphics (ultra definitely not a requirement, med to high would be nice)
50+ fps at mid/high settings in newer triple AAA games and others, like strategy and sports games. I would like an RTX 2070 or better, cause I can get the 2060 for 1000$ and my budget would allow for a better one.
Does need to have a good keyboard cause Ill also be doing schoolwork on it. My primary goal of buying it is to have longevity, I would like to own it for at least 3+ years, thus build quality and thermals are important to keep the hardware running. Otherwise I know that in +3 years my budget laptop might not be able to play AAA games on ultra high settings but thats not what looking for and Im okay with that.
Any tips appreciated! Im not sure whether to wait for new releases like the legion 5 pro since they will most likely be out of my budget anyways [link] [comments] |

Suggestions for Audio/video production laptop, $1,200 Posted: 26 Feb 2021 06:15 PM PST Hey folks, So I recently bought an ASUS TUF706IU with plans to use it for audio recording/editing and video editing as well but unfortunately ran into a slew of problems (unsuccessfully) trying to get my audio interface connected to this thing and recently finding out the quality of audio produced from this laptop is dismal. It's very bad, like potato quality bad. I'm sending the thing back asap but now I'm back in the market for a decent laptop. I have a good machine back home so I'm just looking for something to be able to take on the go, to my studio to record or be able to edit some video while I'm out and about. I bought the the Asus because it has a decent amount of RAM, processor and GPU (AMD Ryzen 7 4800H Eight-Core, 1660Ti, 16gb RAM), but I don't intend to use the laptop for any gaming, despite the name. Does anybody have suggestions for a similar laptop within this price range, that has non-spud audio quality, and perhaps has a reputation for being a good audio production PC? Price up to $1,200, a good processor for recording audio, decent amount of RAM (probably 8gb minimum) and a decent GPU for video editing. 1Tb SSD is a plus and larger screen size for clarity in edits, but could probably do with a 15". Any and all suggestion are welcome, many thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Spilled coffee on my macbook - need a replacement ASAP Posted: 26 Feb 2021 06:28 AM PST Well yup, been beating myself up over it ever since but a couple days ago I spilled coffee all over my MacBook Pro. It shut off immediately and I got rid of as much as I could then let it sit upside down in front of a fan for a couple days. I turned it and it seemed to work but made a weird crackling noise and the battery is definitely bad, I get a little service required notification and if I unplug the laptop it shuts off immediately even though it says there is plenty of battery left. I'm bringing it to micro center today to see if there's any shot at saving it, but not counting on it. So I'm looking for a replacement but I really don't know much about computers. I use it for personal use and grad school where I need to do some coding in R and use ArcGIS, which I did on my MacBook using boot camp. I love my MacBook and have always used apple so I'm comfortable with it and like the way it connects with my phone, so I prefer apple but am open to a windows as well. I know I can't get a new MacBook because I need boot camp and also money, but am open to an older one (the one I have currently is from 2015 but was brand new to me, bought it like new just two months ago RIP) or like I said I'm also open to a windows, but if I'm buying a whole new computer I would like it to last a while. The only specs I know I need are 8 gb of ram and at least 500 gb of storage. My budget is ideally $1000, but I could go up to $1500 if I really need to. I'm in the middle of a very busy time and finals are right around the corner so this has been a huge blow, and I need a new laptop ASAP, as in hopefully this weekend or even today. Any advice/recommendations are greatly appreciated! And don't be like me...keep your coffee far far away. [link] [comments] |
Any other suggestions before I buy? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 05:44 PM PST Hi, I am looking at the Asus Zenbook Flip 15. I am leaning towards buying it, however I wanted to make sure I am not missing any laptops in my considerations. I currently have a Dell laptop that I am very happy with, so I was not sure if there are any Dell models in that similar price range I should look at, like the new Inspiron or XPS models. If you would like to see my laptop questionnaire form you can see it here. I have also heard very good things about the Lenovo thinkpad series, and I could possibly sacrifice the touchscreen if other specs make up for it, and it is in a similar or lower price range. Thank you very much! I just want to make sure I am making the right decision, and haven't left out any other options. [link] [comments] |
