Upgrading mobo, how do I activate windows?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 12:43 PM PST

I've got windows 7 on my ssd (retail not OEM, I think) that I've been using for years. It's time to upgrade the mobo, ram, and cpu. I've heard reports of windows being recognized on their ssd while others have to do a clean install. Some people boot from a flash drive, too. I'm just kind of lost.

I'd like to upgrade to 10, also.

How do I go about this? Do I upgrade to 10 before or after the hardware upgrade? I have no idea where my activation key is for 7.

    Windows 10 Photos not rotating

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 08:38 AM PST

Occasionally I dump all the photos from my and my wife's phones on my PC and archive them, and normally I have to rotate a few using the built-in Photos viewer in Windows. This time, for some reason, all the photos from my wife's phone will not rotate. I have checked the permissions and they are all the same as my photos (which do rotate). Why could this be happening? It's driving me nuts.

Windows 10 gets stuck on boot

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 06:14 PM PST

One day I booted up my PC and it got stuck on a."Please wait" screen with the loading circles stuck and nothing happens, it got stuck before I was even able to do anything, I'd force it to shut down by holding the power button then powered it back on, same thing happens and I shut it down and power it on again, this time it brings me to recovery mode and from here I've been forced to just boot in safe mode, back up what I need, then wipe the PC completely and start fresh, nothing else works (safe mode networking does not work at all while regular safe mode does).

It works great for a while but several months later it happened again and I had to repeat the above process, safe mode, backup files, wipe PC, I was then able to use the PC fine again until today just now when I restarted it and once again got stuck on the cursed "Please wait" with the loading circles frozen and not moving, I'm going to back up my files since then and wipe again but I'm really getting fed up with this, this problem has happened multiple times now regardless of any updates I've installed in between.

I'm wondering if there's any known cause of this or if it's something I'm doing wrong but if I remember correctly, the first time this occured was after having forcibly shut down in the middle of a windows update, which I've done my best to avoid since then.

Is there a way to have duplicates of the same audio device in Windows, but with different settings/volume levels?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 05:48 PM PST

Yes, I'm aware, this is peak laziness on my part - but I have multiple pairs of headphones that I use with my computer regularly. They all have different impedance and sensitivities, so when I switch to a different pair I always have to re-adjust my volumes in windows.

I was wondering if there's any way to duplicate the audio device, so I can set up the volume for each device, name it after the pair of headphones in question, and then just select the right device every time I plug in a particular pair?

In other words, let's say I have two headphones, Headphones A, and Headphones B which are twice as loud, and whenever I use them, I plug them into my headphone jack at the front of the PC. I'd like to be able to duplicate that headphone jack in my sound settings, so that I have two versions, Headphones A, and Headphones B. The only difference being the names and volumes - with it being the exact same jack in use.

(By the way, just as an unrelated site note to the mods here, the flair box when creating a new post is bugged out and appears half off screen, making it impossible to select a flair. This is using old Reddit, both in Chrome and Firefox. I had to inspect element and manually adjust the positioning of the box just so I could select a flair to be allowed to make this post.)

Mac Tri booting 2 win versions boots wrong version of windows.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 05:38 PM PST

I have a Mac with 3 partitions (OSXMavericks, win7, and win XP)

after I installed windows XP I can not boot windows 7.

If I try to go to the os x system preferences and select the partition called BOOTCAMP (the one with windows 7 installed), it boots windows XP and then os x preferences changes the disk to WINXP what am i doing wrong? selecting the WINXP partition also boots windows XP. Holding the option key at boot gives me recovery windows and Mavericks partition option. If I open bootcamp preferences pane in windows XP i get an error saying bootcamp preferences pane failed to load. HELP.

10 years of Mac switching to PC - First day impressions

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 04:35 PM PST

Sorry if this is long, I figured I'd try to give as much detail as possible.

Growing up I used a PC (it was the family computer), but when I was 10 my family got an iMac. This was the point in my life where I started really getting into technology and I started learning and becoming more comfortable with the Mac OS. When I was 12 I got a Macbook Pro for Christmas, and that only furthered my love for the UI on the macs. Eventually that MBP got old and started running slow, so I figured that I needed a new laptop for college. I didn't hesitate and bought the newest model of the MBP (it was the 2017 or 2018 model I'm not 100% sure, I just know it was the newest model that wasn't the one with the touch bar). I loved using that thing. It was everything I loved and it moved so much faster than my old MBP. I knew it inside and out and could do whatever I needed to with it. However, after my freshman year of college, it was apparent that at some point I needed to get a PC in order to run the CAD programs necessary for my major (Architectural Engineering). So, I recently decided to purchase a Dell XPS 15 7590. Specs are:

    • 9th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9750H (12MB Cache, up to 4.5 GHz, 6 cores)
    • NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 1650 4GB GDDR5
    • 16GB DDR4-2666MHz, 2x8G
    • 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD
    • 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) InfinityEdge Anti-Glare Non-touch IPS 100% sRGB 500-Nits display
    • Cost: $1,249

And it came in the mail today. Excited for my first PC, I opened up the box and started it up. While setting it up today, a few things stood out to me that I wanted your guys' input on.

    1. The display. I understand that FHD isn't the best display out there, but I was pretty disappointed with how the display looked. The matte display was a different look and not something I was used to. The colors seemed off and it reminded me of the cheap computers that I used to use in middle school (those were also Dell, so I guess that makes sense). But I think it's just the comparison of the colors on the MBP that's making me feel disappointed. Not sure if a glossy display would help, but it really made me appreciate how much clearer the picture was on my MBP.
    2. The sound. My friends always told me how good the audio was on my macbook, but I never really thought that myself just because it's the only machine I've had. I realized what they were talking about today when I loaded up spotify and played a song. I was shocked at how poor quality it sounded that I thought something had to be wrong. This won't be a huge issue for me as I usually use headphones anyways, but it's always nice to have the option to play music out loud from the laptop as opposed to a speaker or headphones.
    3. The trackpad. The trackpad on the macbook was everything. From the smoothness of the steel face to the easy clicking, it was always smooth and worked well for the design work I would do on the side. The trackpad on the XPS 15 felt clunky and the clicking was rough, leaving my fingers irritated at times.

For the most part, I think I just need to get used to the new machine and UI. 11 years of familiarity with a certain type of computer isn't going to switch over overnight. I was just expecting the new laptop feel that I got when I upgraded from my 2012 MBP to my 2018 one.

So if any of you guys have experience with the switch and/or advice for me, I'd love to hear it. I'm just trying to get comfortable with the machine now, but I'm open to returning it and getting a different laptop if you think that is best. If you need any more information let me know, but thanks in advance!

Almost everytime my laptop goes to sleepmode it won't turn on the normal way, and I have to restart my laptop, what can I do?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 12:34 PM PST

    hi,

Everytime my laptop goes to sleepmode, because I was inactive for a while or i closed it, my laptop screen won't turn on. I can see it still "works" because the lights on my keyboard and my mouse are lighted, however I can't see or do anything.I have to hold the power button to shut it off and restart it again.

    Some info:

Acer Swift SF314-54, Intel I5 @ 1.60GHz. Windows 10 home, OS build:18363.1316. If I need to give more info please say it.

I looked online but the solutions i found were not really for my problem. English also isn't my first languague so maybe I searched wrong.

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it!

Microsft Store thinks game is still installed

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 03:48 PM PST

Hello, I downloaded Forza Horizon 4 a while ago on my pc. I had an issue where I couldn't open the game, I went to uninstall but when I tried it keep giving me errors. I tried to fix it but nothing worked. I then just decided that I will delete the files myself. After deleting ever Forza file I can it still says "play" on the Microsoft store. How do I get the store to think the game is completely uninstalled?

Thanks a lot for your time.

Can someone please tell me where i can get a genuine copy of windows 7

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 01:43 PM PST

I've looked everywhere and every time i install it it says "this copy of windows is not genuine" and it also comes with viruses. This computer can't run windows 10. it has a Pentium D 3 GHz. It crashes on the installer. I don't feel safe using the computer with a non genuine copy. who knows what other viruses are hiding.

Lock a files location in windows 10?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 09:43 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I would like to know if there is a way to lock the location of a file at a specific place. I would like to be able to click and drag a file into a folder and it automatically copy it, instead of moving the original to a folder. I work in insurance and have some regulatory forms that have to get sent out with every file and I am getting tired of copy and pasting a form multiple times a day. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Have a good day!
