    Simple Questions - January 20, 2021

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 04:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

‘Building’ a desktop set for my grandad to play Microsoft flight simulator 2020. Want to see if these are all good pieces.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 02:13 PM PST

So first things first, my grandad who was a pilot his whole life can no longer fly and wanted me to get him a good setup so he can play as realistic of a flight sim that he can play in VR. Preferably 4K. I'm very uninformed when it comes to pc builds so that's why I'm posting here. I've compiled a final list of everything he needs and want to see if anyone can help to make sure I'm not recommending the wrong equipment.

For the desktop, found a build that seems like a good deal. Comes with a 3080 in it.

For the VR, this is what I found the best overall option for quality and price.

And for yokes and pedals etc... this is what he chose.

All in all I just want to make sure it will run vr and everything is compatible.

NO RGB. No Glitz. No Glamor. Just a window into the Abyss. Meet Dark Sapphire, my first PC build.

If someone had told me even three years ago that I would build a PC one day, I would have told them they're bullshitting me. I'm one of the least computer-savvy people I know. But I knew the day would come where I would have to upgrade from my (now 8-9 years old) geriatric prebuilt laptop. I wanted to play games. I wanted to start anew on a clean slate. And I wanted to do it right. So I saved up some money and spent months researching, starting from getting to know the general functions of the components, to comparing brands and asking for feedback.

This sub has been tremendously helpful to me. I think I learned the most from first-time builders who took the time to explain the mistakes they made, and what to be aware of. Little things like remembering to remove the plastic from components, to ALWAYS refer to the manuals, or just to be patient during assembly. I waited almost a month before I started putting together my PC, mainly because I didn't have my new desk yet, but also because I was scared. Even when I first unboxed the case, I started freaking out thinking I couldn't do it (I asked my dad for moral support/help, god bless him). But in the end, it somehow turned on without any problems. (Edit: deleted a video link here)

I still don't think I'm the best person to ask for advice, but I will say this: Believe in yourself. If my dumb ass can do it then you can too. Just take your time and stay calm. (Also watching PC assembly videos and taking rigorous step-by-step notes ended up being super helpful.)

(Also I opted out of all the peripheral lighting/RGB stuff because I kinda... think it's overkill ahahahaha)

Is this really common, or is it just me?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 10:29 PM PST

Can anyone else agree with me when I say that right after building the gaming pc you've been wanting to build for months, you suddenly just.. wanna stop gaming?

Like you spend weeks or even months trying to figure out which parts and which combinations are best going to suit your needs.

You anticipate building a pc you've dreamt of building forever now. You spend $1000+ on it.

    You build it.

You probably have (what feels like, at least) the best 2-3 days of your life just gaming on this AWESOME pc YOU built from "scratch"

Then suddenly. Boom. You just don't wanna use it anymore. You suddenly just have no interest in gaming. In fact, all you wanna do is build ANOTHER pc..???

This is a crazy experience. I never knew it would happen, but now that it IS happening.. it's kinda disappointing.

I have 16Gb of ram in 2x8 config, should I get 2x16Gb sticks of ram and end up with 48Gb or 2x8Gb and end up with 32Gb?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 07:13 AM PST

    - RAM is HyperX Predator 2x8Gb 3200MHz CL16
    - Mobo is Maximus Code XI
    - CPU is 9900KS
The applications me and my dad run on my computer are quite RAM intensive, as well as the games I play are usually ultra heavily modded, let alone the times I play games while running other applications.

TL;DR: 16Gb just doesn't cut it for me and my dad's use of this rig.

Should I get 2x16Gb (Same clock same CL speed) and end up with 48Gb or 2x8gb (Same clock same CL speed) and end up with 32Gb?

Thank you very much for your time and help!

Edit: I'm pretty confident that even 32Gb would be rather little (Not little but you know, he'd use more if he could lol) for some of my dad's programs, especially considering the amount of background programs he usually uses. For me however the only time I'd see 32Gb bottlenecking would be in some extreme google tab RAM rape while running some game with 700 mods installed, else, I don't see any major reason for concern with 32Gb for me lol.

    Need monitor help

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 01:33 PM PST

I built my first PC last year. All the credit goes to this sub that I was even able to think about doing that.

It was for a triple monitor simracing rig. Last week I was setting them up properly, when one of my AOC CQ32G1 monitors got cracked. Absolutely devastating, especially at this time with tax and national insurance due, alongside the January slump for a self-employed person. But I'm going to have to replace it, and I'm getting a little worried about them going out of stock.

Had a quick google, and I'm seeing some cq32g1s described as QHD, and some as WQHD, what is the difference, I'm pretty sure that mine are QHD, but they need to be the same for a triple set-up. What is the difference between these two? There is a 50 quid increase to the WQHD

Corsair Vengeance RGB not showing up in iCue, but is doing it's job as RAM

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:59 AM PST

I have 4 sticks of corsair vengeance RGB pro 3200mhz cl16 4x8. They are all working and my computer is showing that I have a total of 32gb of ram, but I am unable to control one of the sticks in the icue software. It is not even recognized and it's saying that the slot is not occupied. In the Bios all of my Ram sticks are identified as corsair besides the one that I'm having issues with. It's getting recognized as "unknown." Although it is performing and doing it's job as a stick of memory, I would like to change the RBG on it as it is just cycling through rainbow. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Tried everything to get PC to post

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 01:02 PM PST

As the title suggest, I've been trying all day to get my new build to post, everything turns on, fans spin, rgb glows but no post. I've tried two monitors and two cables, nothing. I have a B550m motherboard and a 5600x, so I thought it could be that I need to BIOS flashback, but that hasn't done anything either. Feel like giving up for unless anyone has any solutions.

Is 110°F too high for my idle CPU?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 03:10 PM PST

I got a new computer from CyberPowerPC in December and I noticed that it will lag really bad if I have multiple programs open. I have a Ryzen 9 5900x and an RTX 3080 with 32g of 3600 DDR4 ram. I also have the ASUS TUF Gaming X-570 motherboard. I have a 360mm Corsair AIO Cooler as well.

When I look in my BIOS under the monitor section it shows my RAM set to 3600 and my CPU temps.

    CPU Temperature: +44°C / +111°F CPU Package Temperature: +55°C / +131°F Motherboard Temperature: +36°C / +96°F CPU Fan Speed: 2242 RPM CPU Optional Fan Speed: 939 RPM

All the Chassis Fan Speeds, AIO Pump Speed and PCH Fan Speeds are set onto Ignore.

I also noticed that my AIO PUMP in BIOS says N/A. Anyone know how to fix that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated since I'm not too tech savvy.

I'm wondering if my build is too much since I want to make it somewhat cheaper but still run efficiently. I chose some parts on pcpartpicker pcpartpicker.com/user/ghostlyvaro/saved/#view=hnbh3C Help would be appreciated, I'll probably need to research a bunch more.

New PC build seems slower then expected

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 06:58 AM PST

So I bought a new pc a month ago with pretty good specs. I got a rtx3070, a 3700x , 16 gb ram, but when I try to play cod cold war zombies for example Nvidia geforce experience recommend me playing on the ultra settings 4k with raytracing and dlss on.

I tried playing it but the game gives me 20 fps. Only when i turn raytracing off. it get to +-60 but it still feels bad. Temps doesnt seem to go over 60/70 degree C

I tried PC mark and it basically tells me most of my stuff is underperforming with my ryzen 7 on 18th precentile.

    UserBenchmarks: Game 93%, Desk 89%, Work 100% CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X - 78.9% GPU: Nvidia RTX 3070 - 114.9% SSD: Samsung 970 Evo NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB - 339.6% RAM: G Skill Intl F4-3200C16-8GTZR 2x8GB - 67.2% MBD: Asus ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING

What should I do to get better performance out of my build ?

    *Update:

i noticed my gpu was running at PCIe 3.0 x 4. after switching the card to a other slot that delivers PCIe 3.0 x 16 another new mysterie is happening. all my audio is gone.

    Can I upgrade this build?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 03:01 PM PST

I upgraded my pc last year and I've been dropping a lot of frames again in CS:GO, as much that my screen starts to tear and it just doesn't feel smooth to play anymore. I used to get a steady 250-300 before, but recently its dropped to 100-200. I've tried everything to make it more playable, cpu is already enabled turbo and hyper threading and all other programs are disabled during playing/deleted.

Now I'm wondering if I can upgrade my processor in order to resolve the issue. The problem however, is that the inside of my pc looks like complete garbage and me not having any knowledge around it. Last year I sent my pc to get the upgrades, but I was wondering if this is possible for me to do at home, and some help with the upgrade.

    Inside of my PC: https://gyazo.com/6a469988930b891096f8435d5c58dac7

I upgraded to this current build:

    CPU Intel core i5 10600
    RAM 16GB DDR3
    Motherboard ASUS prime H410M-A
    Graphics card Nvidia RTX 2060
Power supply Masterwatt lite 230V 600W

I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU to a i9 9900, if that's possible with this current build.

Ultimate budget build - seeking GPU upgrade help

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 11:56 AM PST

I have achieved the ultimate budget PC.

    OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit

    MB: Gigabyte EP35-DS3

    CPU: Xeon X5460 3,16 GHz (4C/4T) (modded 771 to 775)

    HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm + Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 7200rpm (500 GB each)

    RAM: DDR2 8 GB - 6400

    GPU: Geforce 9800GT

Nice black case with blue LEDs for power and HDD activity, CPU fan, 2 system fans, total cost... around 100 €. It runs games, I didn't try to max it out, but I know this will run Fallout: New Vegas, GTA V, Valorant, Battlefield 4, maybe some other things.

Problem is, this GPU only does DirectX 10, and you know how that works. Some DX11 games work, some, like Rocket League for example, after they switched to DX11, won't even start. I got the GPU for 5 €, so I can't complain, and it will do for the things I want to play right now (NFS: Most Wanted 2005 on Max settings with a smooth framerate, Fallout: New Vegas, GTA V), but after I finish those, what could I do with it?

What do you think is a reasonable upgrade, of course, being something cheap, like the Xeon processor for example, cost me 15 €, but it runs a lot of stuff. So, what do you think is a good GPU that doesn't cost a lot and will do games? I don't need it to do 3D software or anything like it, I mostly browse and game. I'm not really familiar with GPUs of this era, I had a 8600 GT which got damaged, so I switched to a 8400 GS which was rubbish, and the 9800 GT is a MASSIVE upgrade to that (over 500 % better) and it actually does play games reasonably well. Now I'm looking for at least a 200-250 % upgrade.

6.5 years later and still not a modern upgrade haha

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 05:34 AM PST

    Picture album https://imgur.com/gallery/1Kzit0X

TL;DR: $600 upgrade, i7-4790k, GTX 1070, 16GB DDR3 RAM. Built the original rig in summer of 2014. Replaced everything but motherboard and case this winter of 2020. Glad to be back to the "master race". I can now run everything I need at 1080p 60 fps.

So I replaced my old i5-4670k with a used i7-4790k for relatively cheap hyperthreading and to keep an 1150 socket. The 4790k has a light overclock at 4.6 GHz / 1.213V / max ~70° C. Thanks to u/Alag28 for comboing his 4790k with a H100i AIO from r/hardwareswap. Also bought a used EVGA GTX 1070 from u/epsiblivion to replace my GTX 770. Replaced my 2 x 4GB G.Skill kit for 4 x 4GB of Dominator Platinum DDR3 memory for aesthetics from u/vivi562 and added another 500GB SSD. The white PSU cables are made from Corsair and bought off Newegg. Bought 5 used Corsair SP120 fans off eBay and painted the rings white.

Side note: The past 6 years I've had two EVGA power supplies fail on me, both gold rated and well reviewed. Once in 2015 and again last month. The old PSUs were EVGA NEX 650G and 550GS. I started the RMA process with EVGA in 2015 but if I recall right, it was a pain and I never followed through. This time I picked up a deal on a Corsair RM750x. Trying to future proof for an RTX 3000 series card after undergrad.

Also selling my old i5-4670k, GTX 770, Corsair H60 AIO, 4x4GB G.Skill DDR3-1600, dm if interested.

Gigabyte B550 Vision D vs. ASUS X570 Prime Pro

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 07:01 AM PST

Hello all you beautiful people, I can't decide and I've been going over the same specs for almost 2 weeks now and I still don't know which to get. I'm not a huge hardware guy but I know enough to get around most conversations.

As the title suggests I'm going between these 2 and every time I think I made I decision I end up retracting it and continue in my spiral. I am trying to do a simple, clean, white/black theme which is what I've wanted since I built my first PC almost 7 years ago now. I finally have the means to do so, so that's what I'd like.

    Edit: Differences of note:
Vision D - Wifi/Bluetooth, two 1gb (i think it was a gb) lan ports and I think a RAM speed (RAM still confuses me), easier to qflash, oh and thunderbolt 3 (haven't looked into this much)
Prime Pro - it's an x570 so the 2nd gen 4 pcie slot (i think?) and I think something with a newer gen usb slots and this has 6 SATAs not 4 like the Vision

Link to some comparison website (pangoly) for the mobos.

I'll be switching to team red and have my Ryzen 5 5600x ready to go. I do have a MC close which typically has the ASUS mobo in stock but the Vision-Ds seem to be hard to get, or I'll have to wait a few weeks for shipping, not that worried. Now I know the BIOS flash part should be taken into the equation and it seems that it's easier on the B550, then the X570, but again, I have a MC close and 30 bucks won't kill me (if I can't borrow a gen 3 amd to update the ASUS... I think...) so it's kinda moot.

I am planning on getting an AIO, not sure on the size, I currently have a 460x Corsair Case but may upgrade that to the newer 465x as that one comes with 3 LL120s, which typically go for like 130 bucks anyways. Why not pay 20-30 bucks more and get a new case? Most likely looking at 8x4 Corsair Vengeance RGB RAM (white). I currently have a 1080ti, which probably won't get replaced until the GPU marked unfucks itself. Umm.... idk what else to say...

    Help?

Oh, and I love you. That was it.

Building a new PC an no signal

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 03:56 PM PST

I know this is very common and I've tried all the steps and even but all the old specs together and made sure they do still work. I am upgrading my cpu when MOBO and whenever I try to turn it on there is just no signal. With the old build gpu lit up and fans weren't at full speed but with the new stuff the light isn't on and fans are at full speed. So maybe it's something with the GPU? PC very loud since I swapped my full tower for a mid tower.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 08:45 AM PST

So I recently bought a bunch of upgrades for my PC, including a new case and new fans. Due to the global shortage of the newly released components I currently have my old setup in the new case, with the new fans.

I used to have a Corsair 750D airflow, with 2 exhaust and 2 intake fans. I currently have a 4000D airflow with the same setup. I replaced 2 stock exhaust fans for a NF-A12 and a NF-A14. My intake fans a two NF-A14's.

The problem I'm having is noise. I usually play with stereo speakers and the noise, mostly from my Aorus RTX 2080 TI Extreme, has become almost unbearable..

I've setup the case fans to optimize noise and airflow. The GPU operates at 80-84 degrees Celsius during games like Mount and Blade Bannerlord and Steep.

I have always had full tower PC's, so I'm unsure if this is normal for mid tower PC's or not?

Let me know what you're experiencing! Thanks!

Why are used used GPUs so expensive on eBay compared to r/hardwareswap?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 09:46 PM PST

I know there's been a GPU shortage and prices are increasing, but the prices on eBay are actually insane. I'm seeing 1070s with plenty of bids going for $350+ and some have even went over $400, which was their original selling price when they released 3 years ago while it goes for about 200 dollars on r/hardwareswap. I'm also seeing GPUs like the 1080 and 1080 ti bid for 100-150 more than they do on hardwareswap.

Does anyone have any idea why there is such a large price discrepancy and why people are willing to pay over MSRP for a used 3+ year old GPU? I'm even seeing bids like these where a 1070 is bidding for over 600 dollars. Are these bots or something? Surely no one would actually pay 600 dollars for a 1070.

I have a 3070 FE. My PC works fine until I load a game, when the game is loading or shortly after, my monitor says “DISPLAYPORT No signal” or “HDMI no signal”. Then my entire pc crashes, when it does regain signal, it takes me back to the startup motherboard screen.

I have tried multiple cords, uninstalled my gpu drivers with DDU, and it's not the monitor because it works with another computer. I'm all out of ideas and very frustrated. Any help please?

Looking to purchase a Dual Rank ram kit, Is there a list of models confirmed that are Dual Rank?

The RAM is going for a 5600x build.
