No image file available when attempting to restore using Macrium Reflect?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 03:58 PM PST

I created an image of my hard drive to an external hard drive. My laptops hard drive was then wiped, and a clean instal of Windows was done (while it was sent out for a repair).

I'm now trying to copy my image from my external hard drive to the laptops hard drive, in order to do a full restore.

I'm using Macrium Reflect (Free) v7. I plug my external SSD in, click the "Restore" tab in MR. However, there is no "Restore Image" option like there is shown in the instructions. There is a "Browse for image file" option, but I don't know what I'm supposed to select.

When I navigate to my external SSD, I see the following directories: boot, Program Files, Program Files (x86), Users, Windows. Within Users is all of my data, within Prog Files is all the expected data, etc.

What do I select in order to do a system restore?

I also have a rescue media copied to a flash drive. I have previously (successfully) used that to copy the backup to a brand new cleaned HD. But I can't find what I need to do when the installed HD currently has Windows installed already.

Alternative to robocopy? I need to speed up the process

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 09:10 PM PST

    Hi!

I'm migrating a File Server from 2003 to 2016 using robocopy for copying the files. I'm using /mon:1 parameter for so it detects changes and copy them to the destination server.

The problem is that this is a very active File Server (the company works 24/7) and has a few large shares that are used by a lot of people. Anytime it detects a change, robocopy runs a WHOLE new cycle instead of just copying the new file, making the process very slow. From what I know, this is the expected behaviour. I'm using the following:

    robocopy "\\source\" "\\destiny\" /e /zb /copy:DATSOU /mir /secfix /r:3 /w:3 /V /fft /mon:1

Also tried using /MT and /log. And also, tried running multiple robocopy with subfolders (I have around 40 robocopy's using /mon:1 at this time). Although when I run a lot of robocopy's the processing of files tends to slow down.

The cycle would take around 10 hours to finish (not because of lot of new files, just because it runs a whole new cycle and it checks all files).

The company can't set a manteinance windows for 10 hours stopping all actions on File Server. So I'm looking for another approach, I'm sure there is one but I'm quite new with this topic.

Any help is welcome. Thank you in advance!!!

Is there a native method of automatically installing optional updates?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 05:56 PM PST

Optional updates can be pretty handy, but regular Windows' option of automatically updating doesn't seem to include them. Having some script or something to push them would be nice.

Win10Pro Update causes mouse to blacken screen

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 05:31 PM PST

I recently did a Windows Update and now when I move the mouse or use the trackpad, the screen goes black while over a program or app. I am on Windows 10 Pro OS build 19042.746. It will not go black if I use the touchscreen. Nor does it go black if I use the mouse on a secondary monitor. Does not go black if used on the desktop alone. If you need more information, please let me know. Thanks. This is driving me crazy!

Edit: My device is a Lenovo Yoga C940-14IIL. 16GB RAM. Intel i7-1065G7.

    Issues with Windows Hello Fingerprint

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 04:22 PM PST

Few weeks ago I had to reset my password because I forgot it (and my fingerprint didn't register after a few attempts). Ever since resetting my password, using fingerprint to sign in isn't an option in the sign in screen. I was going to try removing my fingerprint from the Sign In Options menu, but it won't let me remove it. So I said "fuck it" and deleted the files inside the WinBioDatabase folder, but when I try to set a new fingerprint it tells me "this fingerprint is too similar to the one already registered" even though there's nothing in the fucking database folder. Any help would be appreciated.

My power options only have four categories, and I only have one power plan ("balanced"). My external drive keeps getting disconnecting and requiring a reset, and there are no power options to stop it happening.

Is there a way for a window to slide across a screen if you drag and let loose of it?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 03:52 PM PST

I use a touchscreen laptop with 2 external monitors. It's a hybrid 2 in 1 laptop (HP Spectre x360) that folds back into a tablet, so I'm thinking of buying an external keyboard and using the laptop as a monitor only. One thing that I'd find cool is if I could use my hands to send windows sliding into either external monitor I'm using. As of now, if one selects a window it simply stays static after it is moved and released, destroying my fantasy and the immersion of being a high-tech hackerman.

If no such solution exists, would there be a way to change that within Windows itself, such as by adding some code? If not, would it be possible on a Linux system? Currently learning in an IT field anyway, might as well make this my first personal project.

    Frequent freezing of Windows Explorer

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 08:28 AM PST

It's nearly every time I click a file, or right click. The window freezes, states it's not responding for about 30-60 seconds and usually frees its self.

But this happens so often it's driving me nuts, all other programs including Task Manger work, and nothing indicates a high load on RAM or CPU or anything.

Please help, everything I find online seems to point in the direction of how to unfreeze it, instead of treating the source. Malwarebytes yields no viruses or problems :(

    • CPU: i7-9700 3.6 GHz
    • RAM: Corsair Vengence 16GB LPX (2 x 8GB, DDR4)
    • MOBO: Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E

    My laptop randomly restarts..?♻

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 12:10 PM PST

I should mention that not too long ago I got a nasty virus and had to reinstall Windows (but kept all my files). Since reinstall I did have flickering issues, random restarts and for some reasons fans are slightly spinning non stop when on AC power. Is this worth doing proper clean reinstall? Heat doesn't seem to be an issue and the event log doesn't tell me anything productive...

International Data Privacy Awareness day and Windows 10

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 02:21 AM PST

Today is International Data Privacy Awareness day.

For Windows 10 users, new and old, now would be a good time to check in on what kind of data you allow to be sent to Microsoft.

Head on over to Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics & feedback

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/diagnostics-feedback-and-privacy-in-windows-10-28808a2b-a31b-dd73-dcd3-4559a5199319

This settings page allows you to adjust some settings at a very course level, including items related to inking and typing.

Additionally, you can request that data about your device be deleted. Some of this data can be viewed here: https://account.microsoft.com/privacy/

The choice is up to you. Please make one today and help others do the same.

P.S. For those inside the Xbox ecosystem, similar privacy and data settings also exist. Seek them out and change them as you see fit.

League of Legends on Windows Server 2019

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 11:34 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm havin' issues with runnin' LoL on Windows Server. It's freshly installed, enabled .NET 3.5, graphics drivers updated, everything runnin' smooth, tried Rainbow Six Siege and Rocket League, but for some reason LoL keeps throwin' that I'm missing d3dx9_39.dll. I downloaded it separatly and inserted both 32 and 64-bit versions, tried to update whole DirectX, unfortunately microsoft made it quite hard for me, because removed all SDKs and installers from their website, tried to reinstall .NET, run lol as admin, compatibility mode, nothing works. I'm writin' here as last chance. Also tried to run directx test, no issues. Thanks for any help.

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 06:01 AM PST

    Hi,

Hi, one of our machine with Windows 10 automatically changed license form Enterprise to Professional. I have manually added the right key and then the problem was resolved.

Is there a way to find out why is this happened? I did not find anything helpful in event viewer.

    Any help much appreciated.
