    Simple Questions - January 07, 2021

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 04:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    Finished my first ever build!

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:55 AM PST

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone on here who helped me! I'm so excited. I finished installing windows at 2am so I can have my first "real go" tonight! Can't wait. Excuse the GPU cables, do look a bit messy and the unicorn vomit, I haven't configured them yet!!

Scalpers Waiting in Line to Buy GPUs

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 08:39 AM PST

Please just stay quiet and don't be bragging out loud about having buyers lined up for $400 profit. Also microcenter, do a better job, if you hear someone talking like that, especially with current stock, kick them out. The way to combat the scalping is to make it harder for them to obtain cards in as many ways possible.

I missed out on a 3070 today by one person and that person was a scalper. This is a salt post.

I am kind of proud of myself

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:28 AM PST

For the past couple months, the fans of my graphics card were broken. First, one didn't work, then the next started making noise and broke as well. I used a different fan this time, just a small, USB-powered desk fan to cool yourself, just as a last resort till I got new fans.

Today, these new fans arrived and without even looking up tutorials (which is kind of dumb, if you don't really know the ins and outs of your graphics card) I disassembled it, replaced the fans and reassembled it, even switching out the thermal paste correctly.

It's the first time I have done something rather "dangerous" with my PC, meaning, until I get a new one in June, I couldn't have used this one to its full potential.

FYI, the GPU is a 6-year-old Radeon R280X.

After Jayz and GN's recent vids I decided to grab a surplus Aeron. They were right. Do your back and ass a favor and ditch the gaming chair.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 08:12 AM PST

So yeah, I've been rocking one of the "gamer" chairs now for about 3 years. Since I finally got my home office set up and am working from home full time / doing grad school online I've been spending a lot of time in that chair over these last 36 months or so. But I've been developing back pain and the flat seat has felt like sitting on plywood after 8-10 hour days in the office. I wound up grabbing a refurbished Herman Miller Mirra 2 (similar to Aeron) off Ebay after watching these videos:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Yhc6mmdJC4&t=1775s

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qe7kqOUwJ38

Spending several 8+ hour days now in this chair I have to say they were damn right and the chair is absolutely the most underrated part of your set up. So if you're like me and you spend many long days every week with your ass parked in a chair infront of your PC's, do yourself a favor and invest in a good task chair.

Some chairs I looked at in review before purchasing the one I went with:

    https://www.steelcase.com/products/office-chairs/leap/

    https://www.hermanmiller.com/products/seating/office-chairs/aeron-chairs/

    https://store.hermanmiller.com/office/office-chairs/mirra-2-task-chair/1453.html?lang=en_US

    https://www.staples.com/Staples-Hyken-Technical-Mesh-Task-Chair-Black/product_990119

    https://www.autonomous.ai/office-chairs/ergonomic-chair

    https://www.hon.com/chairs/ignition

Any of these chairs will be much better for you in the long run than a flat bottomed, poor posture inducing, edgy looking gamer chair.

Pic of my AK Racing next to the Mirra 2. (I know cables around desk need to be managed, been working on the PC a lot lately and haven't gotten back to it)

    Rant about my PCBuilding experience

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 04:23 AM PST

I've been really lucky and really unlucky this year on what comes to building a PC . Managed to order and get a 5600x and an RTX 3080. My 5600x was defective and had to RMA it.(Lots of BSOD. Never managed to install windows) My Rtx 3080(MSI Gaming X) came with a broken backplate and had to RMA it . They gave me a new 5600x . The Rtx 3080 is now on its way to MSI to do some tests to know who's fault is that a Graphene(Plastic) backplate arrived broken.

Brand new dream build, but no signs of life when pushing power button. What to do now?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 02:51 PM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

    • msi z490-a pro
    • i9 10850k (lga 1200)
    • (2x8) Corsair ddr4 3600 MHz
    • psu bequite 630W (80 pluz bronze)
    • geforce 3060 Ti
    • noctua nh-d15
    • old (2006?) ATX midi tower chassi

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Just put together this build. My excitement was replaced with sorrow when pushing the power button resulted in nothing. No cpu/chassi/gpu/psu fans turn on. No debug lights on mobo. Monitors show nothing. No beeps. The only life form I found was a red small led on gpu, when I removed the pci-e power cable to it but still had it connected to mobo.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Removed gpu, removed 1 of the rams, removed all hard drives, disconnected all fans, but still nothing. Tripple checked power cables, and front panel cables. Took out cpu checked for bad/broken pins, but can't see anything wrong.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

    Thoughts:

    • My psu does only have an 8-pin cpu power cable, which means that I have not connected anything to the 4-pin "cpu pwr 2". Google suggests that this is only need for extreme overclocking. Could this be an issue after all?

    • Perhaps my psu is underpowered?

    • PSU and chassi are from my previous build and several years old, are they not compatible?

Please help, I have no idea where to go from here. Thank you!

EDIT: Added photos of front panel wires.

    Is a 850w gold psu enough for a 2080s and 2060s? (3D rendering)

Hi wanted to upgrade my psu and was wondering if 850w would be enough to for the cards under max load. I have a 2600x in my build if that helps

After years using only mac, finally realized the dream of having my own PC

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 02:05 AM PST

Hello everyone, just wanted to share a little bit about my build and its background:

I was as many people may relate, that teenager that would game a lot on PC/console, and I even had my own as a bday gift when Intel Quad was the bleeding edge (to help with timeline, was a little bit later than the first F.E.A.R./Dead Space game), was great and as any build it was not catching up after 2 years. My family was fine on money but was quite hard to convince my mom to dump couple hundreds (BTW, I'm not from US so PC parts weren't and still are not that affordable) on pc parts mostly for gaming with no real argument regarding school.

So I was drifting towards consoles, since it was a little bit more affordable and I didn't need to share as much with my brother (with the console I would have extra options instead of competing every single time for the PC in order to play something).

Life happens, I needed a laptop for college, which of course it was very underperforming on games but was fine as long I would run stuff on Low/Medium 9which made me go even more to the consoles side), plus I needed to move countries/cities couple times for my studies, so it was laptops all the way (and with the help of a scholarship I was awarded, I could afford a MacBook at that time).

It was with me for 6 years (and sold last year during one of the lockdowns here), which I was using the laptop provided by work. From time to time I would wonder about a gamer pc, but was always afraid to pull the trigger. Now after being a little bit more stable at work, I was wondering again and decided to get my very first build and assembled it from scratch (with the help of 2 different videos and manuals just to be sure I wouldn't screw up haha). Just wanted to share the feeling of finally doing that after 15 years, and I'm still looking around games to play :D

    Changing User name under (C:)

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 07:09 AM PST

When I was booting up my new computer, I was forced to restart it during the initial Windows "hey how ya doing, let's set this thing up" phase. After a reboot, everything went smoothly. However, the one account I have on the computer used the first 5 letters of my email address as my User name under the (C:) drive. I can deal with it I suppose but I wanted to know if there is an easy way to change it without affecting much of my system or losing files.

I've read I have to possibly make changes through the registry, which I am trying to avoid as to not damage anything. Is that my only option to correct the name? If so, does anyone know how I would go about doing that? Windows 10 Home by the way. Thanks.

1440p 144hz vs 4k 60hz for productivity and everyday use?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:37 PM PST

I own a gaming PC that I only use for competitive FPS titles (CS:GO, Quake, Diabotical etc.). I currently have a 1080p 240hz monitor hooked up to it since I value frames and fluidity over gfx when playing.

I recently got a new Macbook M1 as a daily driver and I'm looking to get an external monitor for it.

After using a 1080p monitor for decades, I think, for everything non-gaming, an upgrade is due.

I'm going to use that monitor for 99% non-gaming tasks, office work, browsing the web, light photoshop and music production and maybe the occasional gamecube emulator.

My question now is: is it worth sacrificing the refresh rate and going for 4k 60hz or will this be very noticeable (i.e when scrolling pages etc.) in the overall user experience and fluidity?

    Should I opt for a 1440p 144hz instead?

Unfortunately, due to COVID, all the retail stores are closed for weeks to come, so I cannot check it out in real life and judge them at the store.

My budget would be around $700 max.

    Any input is appreciated

Should I wait for my GPU to come (UK)

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:14 AM PST

Im going through the process of my first ever PC build and don't know how long I should expect to wait for parts. I've pre-ordered a Sapphire Pulse 5600 XT from Scan.co.uk that was meant to be dispatched on 30th Dec, but it still hasn't been picked/dispatched yet. I've called them a couple times but they've said Sapphire haven't got back to them regarding when they'll be in Scan's warehouse. I'm pairing the 5600 XT with a Ryzen 5 5600X that's already arrived, but it doesn't have an integrated GPU so I can't get the PC running until i have a GPU. Should I just buy a really cheap (£30-£50) one to use for now and have as a spare/backup option? Or should I wait for the 5600 XT from Scan? (I'm also okay with changing to another graphics card, max budget £400)

    Thanks in advance!!

Worth upgrading from i7-6700K to 5900x?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 02:10 PM PST

I'm gaming on a 1440p 165hz monitor that is GSYNC compatible.

I have a RTX 3080 installed. Currently 6700K, 16GB ram, Z-170 MB, etc. I'm not noticing any hiccups, but I know that my FPS could go higher in some titles.

I primarily game and use discord with friends, no streaming, no video editing, not much else.

I play about 50% FPS games and 50% a little bit of everything else.

I have the 5900x in hand and I could install it once I get a MOBO, but I'm wondering if I should just sell it to someone who actually needs it.

Will I see a significant enough performance bump? Should I put the 5900x in or just save my cash?

    GTX 1650 or GTX 1050TI ?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:38 AM PST

Hi, my videocard just died 2 months ago and i was struggling to find a new one not so

My first options were : 1.Gtx 1650 super , 2.RX 580/570 since im on a budget and its also enough for what im playing

The problem is that in italy where i live, all these cards are out of stock, also on amazon.it are either out of stock or sold by some third seller on a doubled price like 300-400 euros.

The only cards i have found on amazon which are still in stock and can be bought are :

    1.GYGABYTE GTX 1650 OC D6 ( https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N1656OC-4GD-rev-10#kf ) at 156 euro

    2.ASUS GTX 1050TI Pheonix ( https://www.asus.com/it/Motherboards-Components/Graphics-Cards/All-series/PH-GTX1050TI-4G/ ) at 135 euros

So i have to forget about other cards since are out of stock forever here and i cant even find them on other sites and i have to choose between these two

    My computer specs are:

    motherboard: AsRock h77

    cpu: Intel i5 3570 3.4GHz

    550w XFX power supply

ram: 8 gb dual channel memory corsair

video card: ? which one of these 2 you guys recommend me to buy , or maybe i have other options from which i dont know about ? thank you.

New build - keep old ram or upgrade?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:03 PM PST

I am creating a new build (gaming, video editing, VFX, photo editing) and I was wondering if I should buy new ram or just keep my current ram? My current ram is corsair vengeance 64gb (x4 16gb) DDR4 3200MHz C16 (16-18-18-36). Is it worth buying new 3600mhz ram for the 5900x? I have been reading about AMDs infinity fabric and 1:1 ratios, etc. So I am not sure if I am overthinking or not. Here is the rest of the full build I am planning on:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5900X

    GPU: Nvidia 3090 FE

    MOBO: B550 MSI Tomahawk

    PSU: 850W EVGA

How can I improve my basic office prebuild with only around $200-$250?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:02 PM PST

The prebuild in question is an ATC-705-UC52, and was first released in 2016. None of the parts have ever been replaced (that I know of).

    Current Build:

    - Intel i7 4790 processor

    - 1TB HDD

    - 12 GB DDR3 Memory RAM

    - 300 Watt PSU

    - PCIE16x(1) slot

The PC currently has no GPU, and I was wondering how I could upgrade this unit? I want to use it for the Unreal Engine 4, and for at an average of medium level graphics for games. A smooth baseline of 30-40 FPS would be nice as well, since the PC barely outputs 20 FPS on a good day. I was thinking of adding a 970 GPU, and upgrading the RAM to 16GB.

What would be some recommendations of what I could do with my current budget?

I am a very stupid man. Can anyone help me out here?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 01:45 PM PST

So, in all of my brilliance, I thought I'd build a gaming PC with a buddy of mine. I understand the software aspects, research the prices, get the best look for the money, etc. and he knows how to put the pieces together.

So I began my purchase process, and I picked up a Ryzen 5 5600x (you may know where this is headed) and an Asus TUF Gaming X570 Plus WiFi motherboard.

The BIOS will not work. The machine won't boot. There's no flashback button (why Asus? That seems easy to include right?) and I have zero older processors to draw from. Seeing as I'm still short the RTX 3080 to do this build, I'm hoping I have time to find a solution, but also have no way of knowing whether or not the BIOS update works because... well I don't have anything to display graphics.

Can someone help me out here? Does Microcenter or Best Buy do this? Another alternative I'm missing that doesn't include returning the parts I already got?
