/R/SuggestALaptop Stress Test Project! Submit and View Results Here! Posted: 05 Jan 2020 03:23 PM PST Laptops this gen often have thermal or TDP throttling issues where the cpus aren't hitting the clocks or temps we want. But it's really hard to know what models will be good and which ones won't be without an even testing bed. If you guys have a laptop and want to help please fill out this Google Form and submit a screenshot with your laptop results! We're testing AIDA64 + Unigine Heaven at the same time to give the cpu and gpu both a decent work out. Our fellow moderator /u/D2Ultima has created a video to help walk you through exactly what we're looking for, it's only 5 minutes long and should have everything you need to run the test. The Google Form also contains download links for the programs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4s3ghSNj8Q&feature=youtu.be Here are the results of our tests so far! Posted: 13 Jan 2021 09:42 PM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**
Anything less than 1000 U.S dollars
No
Most important performance then battery then build quality. I would also prefer 2 in 1 laptop
Preferably a not so heavy laptop. My current laptop is quite heavy amd its a hassle carrying it across campus
I would very much prefer a smaller 13 or 14 in. laptop
I would use it for college work. Using word and excel. Use zoom to join online classes and access gmail. I am just getting into drawing and editing.
I dont think ill use it that much for gaming. At most maybe roblox or the Google running dinosaur game when the wifi is down.
A good lightup keyboard would be nice
I think thats about it. Thanks for the help [link] [comments] |
Laptop suggestion for a casual gamer with a full-time coding job Posted: 14 Jan 2021 12:27 AM PST Total budget: 60,000 INR Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Ultra book, high performance, not 2-in-1, Linux ready(or at least support no driver missing issues), battery life not important How important is weight and thinness to you? 50-50 Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15 Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Linux, Programming, Training ML models (on Server/Cloud) , Light Occasional gaming - mid-tier gaming. I would also like to hook up an external monitor in the future If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Civilization 6, strategy games, (if high end : Witcher 3, Death Stranding, MGS 5) Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good key travel keyboard, reliable and long term quality. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My choices are for now : Lenovo Y540 15'inch i5-9300H GTX 1650 (65000 INR - 889 USD) vs Lenovo Thinkpad E14 14'inch Gen2 Ryzen 5-4500U (50000 INR - 684USD ) From my research: Lenovo Y540 15': (pros)
Lenovo Thinkpad E14 (pros):
One biggest drawback for thinkpad is the screen is TN 1920x1080 220nits. Any other suggestions [link] [comments] |
I'm looking to get a gaming laptop in the coming months Posted: 13 Jan 2021 10:24 AM PST Hi, guys! I'm looking to get a gaming laptop in the coming months. Is 2GB RAM completely unusable? What are the other options? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 03:11 PM PST Looking for a really simple (cheap) laptop for general schoolwork, I'm in the UK and starting sixth form. I'm looking at three options right now: Have to say, really leaning towards the first one purely based on the design and the cheaper price! Not looking to do any gaming, purely just school work and web use, like netflix and youtube. But the 2GB RAM is a little off putting, from the small research I've done it seems that it will become very slow. Would really appreciate any advice [link] [comments] |

I'm looking for a gaming laptop that is also good for recording content with my consoles Posted: 14 Jan 2021 04:19 AM PST Hello, i'm from the UK and looking for a gaming laptop within the range of £500-900. I want the laptop to be able to play games such as L4D2 but also be able to record Series X and PS5 gameplay for my YouTube. I'm new to laptops kind of. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Jan 2021 04:16 AM PST Hello guys, I recently bought a MSI GS66 laptop 240HZ 1080p 16GB RAM, RTX 2060 i7-10750h, NVME 1TB for $1999.99 CAD as sale on November 30, 2020. Upgraded it 32GB RAM and added NVME 1TB. Frames of games are fine and I only play Apex, Warzone (I lock them to 190 FPS) other shooters too like Overwatch, even Diablo III that reaches above 240 to fully use the screen which is so smooth. I play some indie games which I'm not worry about. as those goes beyond 1000 frames. And used for just normal surfing on web and such. Now they announced RTX 30 series releasing this January 26, 2021. I really want to upgrade but is it worth it though? Prices are really low for them and I can return my laptop to Bestbuy till January 16 with full refund. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks guys. [link] [comments] |
Lenovo Legion 5, 5 Pro or 7? (2021 Models) Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:57 AM PST Which do you think among the three is the best in terms of performance? I am a newbie so I do not really know the difference. I hope y'all can help. [link] [comments] |
Looking at how to price my old laptop Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:39 AM PST I am NOT selling it in this reddit just to be clear. I just don't know how to price it if I would be selling it in and I would like some opinions of people who know what they're talking about I have a Predator 17 G9-791. I bought it in 2016 for £2000. Specs include: Intel core processor i7-6700HQ @ 2.60GHz 16 GB Ram 64-bit OS 17. 3 Display full HD NVIDIA Geforce GTX970M 1TB storage on hard drive 200GB on solid state drive Weight 4.1kg Illuminated keyboard Slight damage to the audio port but still useable Missing the space bar and f key but replacements can be found online. Battery could do with replacing if not needs plugging in most of the time. Line across the centre horizontal of the screen as I once sat on my bag which had my laptop in but its barely noticeable. I can't find anything online to suggest it's current worth including the damage so if anybody could help me out that would be great. Thank you :) [link] [comments] |
Laptop for girlfriend. Used for browsing, spreadsheet/writing, watching movies. Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:26 AM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Not a set budget, but there's no need for best-of-the-best. Located in Denmark, but would appreciate input from users of other countries. Are you open to refurbs/used? No, prefer new. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Not 2-in-1. The laptop will primarily be used from home, so battery life doesn't need to be extraordinarily high. Decent monitor and sound would be good. How important is weight and thinness to you? Thinness is not important, but it shouldn't be too unwieldy. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 inches. Any bigger will be uncomfortable in the lap. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nothing heavy, but will be using some photoshopping. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Will only be used for gaming occasionally, and not anything very demanding. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard would be a plus, but not a dealbreaker. No touch-screen. DVD or Bluray-reader also a plus, but not required. [link] [comments] |

Recently got a laptop with RTX 2070 Max-Q. Should I return it and get a laptop with 3070 Max-Q? Posted: 14 Jan 2021 02:36 AM PST I bought a Razer Blade 15 with a 2070 Max-Q a few days ago. I just saw that they announced the new laptops with a 3070 Max-Q in them coming in March for Europe. How big is the performance improvement with the 3070 compared to 2070? non-gaming laptop with excellent System performance Posted: 14 Jan 2021 01:52 AM PST What I'm trying to upgrade: Dumpster-tier ASUS R540NV from a couple of years back - 4GB DDR4 RAM, 500GB HDD, Pentium N4200, 15.6" screen. It's an absolute disaster, anything more than 5 tabs being opened in Chrome results in all the memory occupied, and let's be honest, using an HDD for the system partition is just outright clowny in 2021. The processor is outmached by my Phenom II from ~12 years ago. If that's not ridiculous then I don't know what is, even if I consider that the latter is not a notebook processor. Boot time is anywhere between a minute or two. Purpose General usage - browsing, movies, music, social media and instant messaging applications, Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Office, some very lightweight programming maybe. No video games or hardcore rendering programs. Minimal video editing, emphasis on minimal, not really super-essential. What I want A 15.6" display, decent camera, and good performance - no 100% CPU usage when I'm opening a folder or launching Google Chrome. No 100% disk usage when Windows happens to update, which is pretty freaking frequent these days honestly. I'm guessing this means 8GB DDR4 RAM and a Ryzen 3/5 or Core-i3/i5 CPU from the past few years. Budget & other Around 600-700 USD, I'll be paying in HUF, that's around 180 000 - 230 000 HUF. Very high VAT in Hungary (plus import taxes and the likes), so it may be preferable to assume 500-600 USD if you are looking on the likes of Newegg, Amazon and whatnot. Models I considered in this price range I'm linking Hungarian websites for easier understanding of the price range in general. It should be fairly understandable (the specifics I mean) regardless. Any suggestions welcome. If you can just suggest the hardware (typical CPUs for this price range that I should be looking for, for instance), that is also okay and appreciated. Thanks. Looking for a Gaming laptop suitable for univeristy and travelling Posted: 14 Jan 2021 01:48 AM PST Looking for a Laptop I can use for my university and gamign, as I tend to travel from my city of my university and my home town (and vice versa). Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 800€ (Germany), if necessary up to 1000€ Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance > Battery Life > Build quality >= From factor How important is weight and thinness to you? Mediocre. I will travel by train a lot from my home country to my city where I study. Weight is less important but it should preferably fit into my bag. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programs used for my university (SPSS, Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint, GPower), Gaming (Minecraft, Heroes of the storm, League of Legends) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? see above. At least medium setting with 30fps. Anything above would be good (especially 60fps) Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Ask me anything which seems important but I forgot about. Thanks in advance! Posted: 14 Jan 2021 01:20 AM PST Hey all, I wanted your opinion on two laptops I have narrowed down to. Here is my use-case: 2-person household - 1 desktop, one work-provided laptop, 1 Yoga 910 (needs repairs, but serviceable) I need to utilize this new laptop for work, primarily browser-based with light media. I currently use the desktop for work and play, but need to switch rooms (hence the need for a laptop, but no need for ultra portability). My partner will potentially go to grad school in a couple years, and may need to use more RAM-intense applications such as R. I figured I could prioritize RAM and moderate storage over CPU, but I still kept my parameter to i7s. I'm considering either the Yoga C740 or the Thinkpad E15. I like the aesthetic of the Yoga. I also already have a Yoga, and was burnt on the parts when needing repairs. As such, aesthetic is no longer as much a priority and I rather have a reliable model with good build quality that can last at least 5 years. I also figure that should a more portable option be needed, we can get one when that time comes. Right now the Thinkpad seems to be the wisest choice. However, there is very little difference from the Yoga outside of potential build quality issues (even weight is similar!). There is no mention of a full-size keyboard on the Yoga, which raises my eyebrows. Can anyone convince me that the Yoga is a better purchase outside of aesthetics and ~$20? Also, if you have other suggestions I am all ears. I enjoy Lenovo for its reputation with midline business products but am open to other brands. [link] [comments] |

Laptop recommendations from these requirements Posted: 13 Jan 2021 09:13 PM PST Hi everyone. I recently transferred to a school to finish my Bachelors in Information Technology and I'd love some recommendations on a laptop. My school has a list of requirements listed below. Most people are recommending the ASUS VivoBook but I was curious what others would recommend. Thanks!! Component Specification: Processor Intel i5 or i7 7th or 8th generation processors which support Intel Virtualization Technology ,Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (This can be obtained freely through the School's Microsoft Imagine program*) Hard Drive: 1 TB or greater RAM: 16 GB Network: Wireless 802.11n/ac (required) Optical: External DVD±RW/CD-RW (optional) Ethernet: 10/100/1000 (optional) Cabling: Ethernet patch cable (optional) Eta: LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $800-$1500 Are you open to refurbs/used? Sure. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Just trying to make sure basic requirements are met. How important is weight and thinness to you? On a scale of 10, I'd say 6. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/a Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Will be using utility software is all I'm informed of as of now. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Looking for a gaming laptop after I sold my PC Posted: 14 Jan 2021 12:48 AM PST Hey Fellas, I made a hard decision and sold my beloved PC. I used to have a 8700k paired with a 1070ti, I really enjoyed it but with the new hardware being out I tough I should sell it while it's still worth something. One more reason I sold it is that I travel quite frequently between my workplace (in a different city) and my hometown. Carrying it between this 2 locations became pretty annyoting. What am I looking for ? I am looking for a laptop with better performance compared to my old PC. My old PC could run esports titles at 1080p/1440p above 100fps and more demanding stuff at 60fps on 1440p. Currently I have a placeholder Legion y530 (8300h , 1050ti, 144hz) which I like but a 17 inch would be better I guess. This is what I tought about:
Budget : around 1500 - 1600 Dollars. Thanks alot ! [link] [comments] |
Laptop for niece that can run small games Posted: 13 Jan 2021 06:43 PM PST Hello! I'm looking for a laptop at a $600 budget for my niece. Her laptop literally stops working if she's running roblox even on the lowest settings. Would like one that can work with zoom calls for school and one that can work at least roblox. Preferably one she can use even as she gets older towards middle school. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Jan 2021 12:24 AM PST Budget is up to 2000. I'm looking for a laptop that won't run hot and doesn't have any major issues that would require consistent repair. My current Dell XPS 15 from a few years back has horrible heat issues, and it appears that the new models do as well. I'll need to be able to use it for 16 hours a day sometime next year (my life will be hell), but I won't be using any program other than chrome during that time. [link] [comments] |
