Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:09 PM PST Hello! I currently have a computer with Windows 10 Home, and I am currently looking to purchase a new computer. I have heard that with Windows 10 Pro, you can use a thing called the Group Policy Editor to prevent your computer from installing quality updates. Can somebody help me understand what this entails and whether I understand this correctly? I don't want to spend extra money for nothing, but if Windows 10 Pro will help me be able to receive security updates without having to install any quality updates, I will GLADLY pay WHATEVER the seller is asking for. I'm a little confused while Googling around about this issue. One particular website says that with Windows 10 Pro I can delay the updates for an entire year, but then when I read the article it says I can only delay the updates for 30 days. Isn't there some way to entirely disable policy updates and only receive the security updates? If not, being able to delay quality updates for a year is infinitely preferable to receiving terrible unwanted updates every few days and might still be worth the extra money. However, I'm a little confused as the why the article claims that I can delay them for up to a year but then later claims I can only delay them for 30 days. I am also curious about what additional features are included in Windows 10 Pro. Generally, when I get a new computer, I go through and change as many settings as I can to get the computer as close to Windows XP as I possibly can. I don't want to pay a bunch of extra money for a bunch of extra features that I'm going to have to spend a bunch of extra time and effort disabling features that I don't want on my computer. Just looking to have the simplest version of Windows possible which will update and change itself as infrequently as possible. I just want something basic and simple that will stay the way the way it is. Can anybody help me understand in what ways Windows 10 Pro might be a good or bad decision regarding my goals? Would I be better off buying Windows 10 Pro so that I can use Group Policy Editor, or Windows 10 Home since it doesn't have all the extraneous features of Windows 10 Pro? I'm not super techy minded. I'm not a complete moron with regards to technology, but it's probably easier if you assume I am. :-P [link] [comments]
Windows 10 Audio Issue When Using Headphones Posted: 26 Jan 2021 06:02 PM PST Hi, my laptop with Windows 10 on it has had an issue with playing audio recently. Whenever there isn't any sound playback for a while and I then play something with sound, it plays really loudly and is very distorted. I've already turned off audio enhancements, but I'm not sure what else to do. [link] [comments]

Need HELP with Windows+Hostsman Posted: 26 Jan 2021 01:33 PM PST Hello, I'm a noob-user (kinda) and I need your help. I recently installed HostsMan on my Windows 10 computer and activated some sources with like 100,000 entries. My son went to computer and deleted the program and now I don't know what to do to restore my computer how was before. I tried: - delete the hosts file from windows/system32/drivers/etc but it gives me an error, don't know how to do it. - use command prompt with "inconfig /flushdns" but was stuck/freezed and I closed it. - tried to make a new hosts file and copy-paste into hosts file but "windows says I don't have the acces??" (dude I'm the administrator..). Please...I don't know what to do anymore. I don't want to reinstall the windows now because I have calls where I need my computer working ok and I don't have the time for this. Any help is really appreciated! Thank you! Laptop lagging after 30-40min no input Posted: 26 Jan 2021 01:19 PM PST Hi, I have a weird problem. If I leave my laptop on and give it no input for +- 30-40min it starts lagging horribly. By lagging I mean: slow response to input, slow loading time, lagging screen, ... It doesn't matter if it is a game or just word. It still functions: I can open close programs, play vid, type,... The only thing that seems to stop it after it happens is a full restart. any ideas? Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:28 PM PST Hello, so I just started having A LOT of windows problems on my ssd. Tried to do all the dism and sfc commands but all programs still needed admin rights to open. Basic programs like task manager won't even start... Well, what the solution? FRESH INSTALL... NO Looks like after a clean install on my brand new NVMe, updating windows and installing steam, discord, etc, windows is corrupted AGAIN! No task manager, no MS edge, no nothing. I have 3 more hdd plugged in, B:\programs, D:\Data, E:\Games. D is the only one MBR tho. My question is, what's corrupting windows?????? My old ssd is unplugged, my usb windows image is 20H2, got BIOS on UEFI mode... Should I try to do a fresh install again without any extra hdd plugged? Only the NVMe? I don't think having other hdd can corrupt windows in such way. Is it possible that microsoft account syncing could restore corrupted files from old windows? I've installed windows so many times in multiple personal and clients PC and something like that never happened. Windows Setting "Other Options" missing. Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:01 AM PST Hello, I use Windows via bootcamp, which disabled the Windows indicator to show the volume level when I pressed the icon keys. I had another indicator, a mac like thing, which now is gone too, same goes for keyboard brightness. Any ideas about how to fix this? I saw that there was a software to hide the volume popup... maybe that could actually help me re enable it, but I'd like to avoid installing something just to change a minor setting. Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:39 AM PST So, I have a Dell 7550 Laptop running Windows 10 Enterprise 1903 (18362.1139). I try not to run any Windows Updates on it, because they always seem to break something. I haven't run any updates that I know of since 12/3/2020, when I plugged in my iPhone and it automatically installed the driver. With that said, my wifi mesh is the Asus ZenWifi AX (XT8) and standing next to one of the nodes, connected to the 5ghz wifi, I get 500mbps download speeds on all devices (Dell laptop, iphone, AppleTV, Macbook Pro). I work out in a garage about 20 feet away from the nearest node. And up until last week, I was getting 250+mbps download speeds on this new Dell 7550 Laptop. As of last week, it now barely gets 10mbps download speeds on the 5ghz wifi. Upload speeds are also abysmal compared to what I used to get. It gets 100+mbps download speeds on the 2.4ghz wifi. And nice upload speeds too. I tested my iphone in the same location, on the 5ghz wifi, and I am still getting 250+mbs download speeds on the iphone (the iphone is literally sitting on the keyboard of the Dell while getting those speeds). I tested my other work laptop, an HP z-book, in the same spot on the desk as my dell, and it is also getting 250+ download speeds on the 5ghz wifi. Steps I've taken to try to resolve this on my Dell laptop:
Any ideas? What am I missing? What could have changed in the past week? [link] [comments]

Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:07 AM PST Hi all I have an old usb audio interface. It's an M-Audio M-Track (not sure if it's mark I or mark II). It works fine. However, I'm having power problems with the connection to my pc. Basically, when I start up the pc, it powers on. Then after I get through the bios screen, as windows is loading, it goes off. If I unplug it and plug it back in when windows is on it is fine but it's really annoying me. I've tried a few things so far..... I've changed the usb controller settings in device manager so that windows does not turn off to limit power. I was originally using the windows assigned drivers for it so I installed the manufacturer drivers. I tried the drivers for both the mark I and the Mark II. Then I tried both of those drivers in compatibility modes for windows 8 and windows 7. My pc is Asus X570 tuff gaming mb, amd Ryzen 7, 64gb patriot viper ram, serbrent 1tb nvme m.2 pcie4 ssd and a sapphire pulse 5500 8gb graphics card with windows 10 pro. Please help. It's driving me nuts! Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
so I stopped using the new Microsoft Edge, and the Alt-Tab issue is gone now. Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:00 AM PST I've been testing for hours, and I didn't have the issue anymore, that explains why not everyone has it. just informing everyone since Microsoft isn't planning on fixing this until 20H2 as this comment says on GitHub. Reinstalling Windows with user data on separate drive Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:40 AM PST Hi, I'm hoping someone can talk me through this - I started having some glitchy behavior on my machine and was forced to hard restart on multiple occasions when things would freeze and nothing else would work. So I tried resetting windows, it seemed to be ok for a day or so and then same behavior started up again today. I feel like a re-install is maybe the best option at this point, but wanted to check about my set-up. A while ago I transferred my user account location to my D drive, in case I had to do just this sort of thing, but now I'm concerned that re-installing is going to have me create a new user profile. I just want to keep what I have on my D drive for that and it seems like things could get messy. Any advice on how to make this a seamless process? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
