[Unsolved] 2.4Ghz fine while 5Ghz randomly drops saying "Connected, No Internet"

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:34 AM PST

Hi, I've been having WiFi issues for months, and have been struggling to diagnose what the cause could be. I've gone through several different pieces of equipment, and have begun narrowing down what the symptom is, but I have no clue how to fix it. I would appreciate any/all help on this.

For several months I had been noticing frequent inconsistent disconnects from the internet. Usually would notice my phone saying "connected, no internet", and my laptop would drop and reconnect as well. At this time, I was using Google Nest WiFi, which doesn't let you choose between 2.4 and 5Ghz.

Since then I have changed equipment around a few times. I am now on a Netgear Nighthawk Modem/Router. I've kept the 2.4 and 5Ghz bands separate, and have noticed the issue seems to be only happening with 5Ghz. I've used netspot to make sure the 5Ghz is running on uncongested channels for my neighborhood. To me, this implies there is some sort of 5Ghz interference happening, but if that is the case - why would my devices be able to stay connected to the router as "connected, no internet"?

I've begun hard wiring devices I can that are close to the modem/router, and have not noticed any drops on anything hard wired the entire time I've had the issue. However when my TV was previously on the wifi, I would notice it would experience the issue even though it was right next to the router (it would sometimes drop a stream, but usually I could just tell it would go back and forth between very low and very high resolution).

I'm paying for 300Mbps down and normally get around that.

I'm normally tech savvy, but so confused by this issue, and have no clue how to resolve it. Any help would be very much appreciated!

    Apartment internet

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 03:13 PM PST

I recently moved in with a roommate and would like to try to get the wall Ethernet ports working. The modem and router are currently in the living room which was apparently the only jack that works for the modem, but he didn't try the modem in the patch box. The wall ports are in every room and day cat5e on the blue and white ports, and all the cords appear to be labeled by room in the patch box and there's a 4-way splitter already.

Just wondering if you kind folks could instruct me as I don't know much about networking at all. Here are photos of the patch box, the wall ports and the modem/router.

Software to monitor home network bandwidth usage in real time?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 06:43 PM PST

I want to be able to monitor internet bandwidth usage in real time for all devices in my home network right from my PC. I'm using an entry level router which doesn't include the ability to see which devices are using which amount of bandwidth at the moment, much less a history of how much data they've downloaded and uploaded this month.

Is there any software that can do that? Sorry I'm very new to this. The common bandwidth monitor software that I've found online only show a breakdown of PC applications using the internet, but not the other devices in the network.

What is the best way to achieve consistent speed around the whole apartment?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 05:12 AM PST

Recently moved to a new apartment and we're in the process of setting up our home network. We have a Huawei HG8546M router (yellow square, forced upon us by our lovely ISP) in the office room. It has our work PCs hooked to it. We also have a gaming PC (red rectangle), which we're planing to buy a pcie wifi adapter for and use it as a Netflix / gaming machine in the living room. Unfortunately, even though the distance between the router and the gaming PC is not that great (~20m / 66ft), the wifi signal is too weak for our needs. I ran some speed tests around the apartment and found that the 2.4GHz network is somewhat easy to connect to, but we can't get more than 4mbps out of it. If we get lucky enough to connect to the 5GHz network from the living room the speed barely scratches 30mbps. Our intent is to have consistent 80-100mbps around the whole apartment, since that's what we're paying for. What do you think is the best way to achieve that?

Side note: The router has some weird restrictions. For example, only two of its ports are meant for connecting to the internet. The rest are for our ISPs TV services. We also can't touch the settings of the router locally - if we want to change our wifi name or password, for example, instead of connecting to the default gateway address and setting them up manually, we have to call tech support and tell them we want a name/pass change and they change them remotely.

Edit: I've taken my time to research every option mentioned in the comments and discussed it with my partner. So far we think we should try using our current router as a bridge and get a new one with better coverage. If that doesn't help our situation we think we'll go for an access point, which seems to us like the better option out of the all currently mentioned. We really appreciate everyone's input so far. Thank you for the well put comments. We definitely learnt a lot today :)

Slow page load, fast.com says 75+Mbps speed

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 02:16 PM PST

Hey all, I've been having issues with my tp link archer a5 in acces point mode. It was fast the first day, fast.com even says 75+ speed. Some sites load fast, other never. For example google loads, and the searches load but if I click a link it starts loading but never finishes. Not sure what could be the problem, not many options in acces point mode and it workes fine before. If I switch it to router mode I get 10-15Mbps speed. so thats not really an option.

    Any ideas ?

    Steps to put server online?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 05:12 PM PST

So I just built a home server. Pretty proud of if myself. 32TB, 16GB mem, Ryzen 3400G. Just had some installers run hard wiring through the house. I access it from my desktop using Windows Remote Desktop, works phenomenal to the point I'm writing this on it and didn't realize it at first.

Server is set to always be on. Should it lose power it automatically boots and goes back into windows. Everything is the way I want it. The only things left, completely out of my neck of the woods, are how to make this server accessible from any device I want while on the road. I travel a lot and wanted to use it as a means to store and keep important documents as well as my FLAC audio collection, etc. I have ATT Fiber with the gigabit service. Being wired I get pretty ridiculous numbers since I just came from a 100mbit setup. Does the ATT Fiber have a static IP? Is there a way I could create one? I really don't know how to take these next steps. Also is there a way to have it like a shared network drive but from outside my private home network? RIght now i have it shared to my desktop but would like to have it accessible from my macbook when I'm in hotels. I'd like to be able to access it to push and pull files or whatever I really want but not like dropbox where it all has to be synced on my laptops drive as well. I haev the base model M1 Macbook air which is only 256GB hd.

Two routers on same physical network

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 04:28 PM PST

I see info/posts on the interwebs where people say it's fine to run two routers on the same network -- they'll just be double NAT'd. Something like:

    Internet/Modem -->Router 1(192.168.1.0)-->Switch 1-->Router 2(192.168.2.0)-->Switch 2

Is this really possible? I'm assuming Router 2's WAN port would get a 192.168.1.0 address but what about its switch ports or Switch 1 and 2? If both routers are connected to both switches, how would a client know which router it should pull an address from? Or is it as simple as "Any clients connected to Switch 1 will get a 192.168.1.0 address and anything connected to Switch 2 will get a 192.168.2.0 address"? Will the two networks be able to talk to each other?

Multiple computers obtaining 1GB speed, 1 Is not. Help..

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:46 PM PST

I recently moved, My current roommates have been living at this house for awhile now. When I hooked up my computer it turned on and everything seemed normal. Then I plugged the ethernet cable into the computer and ran a speed test because my roommates were really excited about having 1GB speed internet. When I started the test it shot to about 86 Mbps then did a weird glitchy movement and proceeded downwards all the way to 17 Mbps. I called them in and we proceeded to change ethernet cables and nothing. Then we decided to change the port that was being used on the modem and still nothing. So, then we took the ethernet cable out of one of my roommates computers that was receiving the 1 Gb speed internet and still nothing changed when plugged into my computer.. So, all in all I have tried, Different Ethernet cables, I have tried different ports on the modem, I have tried a ethernet cable that was in fact working on another computer, and I have looked to see if any drivers needed updating. I'd also like to add that my computer does not have a Wi-Fi adapter. Which means Wi-Fi is not an option here.

Wifi drops from 25MB/s to 2MB/s - 5 minutes after connecting

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 02:50 PM PST

So whenever I connect to the Wifi, initially the speed is up in the 20MB/s range. But in a couple of minutes it suddenly drops to an average of 2MB/s and never recovers. If I reconnect to the Wifi, it will once again have a 20MB/s speed, but eventually drop.

Any clues as to how to fix it?

Some Coax Outlets Not Live in Apartment

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:08 PM PST

    Hey All,

The modem/router combo that I have in my apartment has to connect to a coax outlet in order to work. I've had everything set up and working just fine for over a year, but I'm looking to move my modem/router to another room. I set everything up exactly how it was before, but the modem does not receive any signal from the coax outlet in the new room.

I did some research, and found the source of the coax signal for my entire apartment. It's a single input line, and 5 output lines (corresponding to the 5 coax outlets in the apartment, I'm guessing). Three of the output lines are connected to a 3-way coax splitter, so my assumption is that only 3 of the outlets are enabled in the current configuration.

In true apartment fashion, nothing was labeled. To help me fix the issue, I tried unplugging each of the outputs individually to see which one made the modem drop in the room where I already know it works.

The confusing part is that no matter which cable I unplugged, the modem never lost signal. I even tried unplugging the input line, and the modem stayed up.

I don't know if I'm understanding how the coax runs work in my apartment. The only other location I'd assume the coax could run is inside a locked room at the side of my building. If the cables in my apartment don't influence the coax outlets, I honestly have no clue what they're there for.

Here are come pictures of what's happening:

G3100 router with ECB6200 moca adapter

Just replaced the g1100 router with the g3100 router. I have three ecb6200 moca adapters for upstairs. Each one does connect and provides internet access with good speeds. The problem is one is attached to an Xbox and lags quite a bit even when the download/upload speeds are high. The other is connected to a PCand will randomly drop the connection. What could be causing this?

    Struggling with Ethernet Through Vents

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 05:17 PM PST

Hey all. Today is my second attempt (lost count of the hours) trying to get this job completed and I'm well out of ideas. I'm trying to run an Ethernet cable from my den where I've got my networking equipment to my bedroom. (Shitty map available here).

My problem is that over the utilities closet, there's a 2 or 3 foot gap that I need to get over with my wire. I need something that's rigid enough to bridge that gap but flexible enough to get down the two relatively sharp bends that follow. The map doesn't really do those bends justice. Fishing tape is too flexible for the gap, cable rods are too rigid for the bends.

I considered pulling the duct back from inside the utilities closet so I could directly access the start of the gap, but it runs through the wall and can't budge (without doing more damage than I'm willing to do).

The map also isn't anywhere near scale. A rough measurement shows about 17 feet from the second green vent in the den to the bedroom. Anyone have ANY idea how I can get this damn cable run?

    POE/Data over cat 6a

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 01:17 PM PST

I have a cable run from my rack to my room, it's been connected to my PC for months with perfect 1 gbit connection.

Today I tried to connect my UAP-AC-PRO to it and switch the port from the backend to a POE+ Port (double checked that this port functions). It powers up the AP just fine but there's no data transfer going on. Is it possible that the cable can't handle data and power at once?

Strange random but frequently occurring issue on Virgin Media home connection

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 02:44 PM PST

    Hi,

Bit of a weird issue with my home network that I've been trying to troubleshoot for a few days. I think the router might be on its way out, but just want to confirm it - I'm an IT technician working from home, though networking is one of my weaker areas.

    Essentially I'm on Virgin Media's 350Mbps down / 40Mbps up plan.

Randomly throughout the day, devices that are connected to the internet over WiFi (Xbox One, Windows laptops, Amazon FireStick etc) will have their internet connection become very slow to load webpages & operate - to the point where it can take 2-3 mins to load Google. This issue can last up to ~ 5 mins.

This isn't down to the internet speed however, as I can run a speed test and am reaching ~310 down / 34 up.

When this happens the router's config page also takes 2-3 mins to load, so it sounds to me like an internal networking issue as opposed to something at the cabinet or with my ISP.

I can't test whether this is happening on a wired connection as my laptop is slim and has no Ethernet port, and my Xbox's Ethernet port is broken.

Interestingly when this randomly occurring slowdown happens, each device still believes it has a fully working connection to the internet (WiFi signal is fine & is providing an internet connection also).

I've checked the router logs & it's stayed connected to the internet during the times when the devices suddenly can't reach webpages anymore.

I did a tracert while the network was fine & as a standard hops 2 & 4 always timeout for all 3 tries. Fine, that's not an issue.

When the network is playing up, any of the hops at any point in the tracert will timeout.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Twitch streamer getting screwed over.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:16 PM PST

So recently due to covid i lost my job and decided to start working from home online. Things started out okay, i was able to stream every day for about 9 hrs at a time which was great! No interruptions or anything. Fast forward 7-8 months later and i cant even stream for more than 15 minutes without my dsl connection dropping. We have had trouble in the past with Frontier but recently its gotten to a breaking point where i shit you not every 15 minutes the dsl signal drops. Ive had 5 different technicians come out and told me theres nothing wrong and that it "is what it is" and if we want them to re wire the lines it will be $150 an hr for installation not including other fees. Thats some straight bullshit first of all. Secondly, Frontier Communications is running a monopoly on our area. They have paid off comcast, dish, att, and others to prevent them from serving our high demand area. The internet goes out every time the furnace kicks on, any time somebody connects a new device, any time i open spotify on my cell, any time someone sneezes too hard the net drops. PLEASE HELP ME IM LOSING MY SHIT HERE. And yes, ive tried new modems, ive tried every different setting on my router under the sun. Ive changed the band width from 2ghz to 5ghz and it doesnt help, ive tried making sure my pppoe password is correct, ive made sure my dns ports are correct. Please. Help. Me.

Help this idiot make/choose Cat6 cable for surveillance and home network

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:37 PM PST

    Hey All,

I know there is a lot of solid core vs stranded threads but I haven't found much on security cameras and home wiring together and apparently i've bought all the wrong stuff. My two goals:

    1. Mount surveillance cameras for a business. The cameras are all 20-30 feet apart and the biggest run will be around 150'. The system is PoE and the cables plug into an NVR so I need to make sure the cable runs power to the camera and works with the nvr as well.
    2. Wire my house with ethernet to several rooms and to an office outside the house. The in-house runs will be pretty short, not more than 100ish on any of them, but the run to the office will be more like 400ft or so.

So where I screwed up is I bought 1000ft of cat6 monoprice stranded cable and rj45 cat6 connectors on amazon. After cursing and failing to get the stranded wires into the connector for like an hour, i'm reading several things:

    1. the cheap rj45 connectors don't work well with cat6 gauge wire and can be a major pain/impossible to get the wires in. I've found this to be the case.
    2. I should be using solid core and keystone jacks for longer cat 6 runs and only using stranded for short jumps from the jack to whatever i'm running.

For the house this makes sense. For the cameras, can I terminate a solid core cat6 into an rj45? I have been confused on this since all the rj45 connectors I can find seem to have multiple slots for the stranded cables not solid. I need to plug the cameras in with a male connector so if I use a keystone jack, i'd need another cable between the jack and camera which seems unnecessary.

    Work VPN and home network

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:22 AM PST

The other day I was browsing the internet on my personal machine and an ad popped up telling me my IP location was one which I'm pretty sure shows on my work machine when I am on the work VPN. I went to an IP checker and sure enough it was saying that was my IP.

This confused me and made me wonder... When my work machine connects to the VPN does my whole home network switch over or just the traffic from that machine? Just wondering if this is the case, could this compromise my privacy at all, and can all traffic be monitored?

Any answers or detail on this subject greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Will a new modem help in this case?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 04:17 PM PST

We built our dream home about 6-years ago. Unfortunately we were not forward-thinking enough to consider internet. Because we are very rural, the only option is DSL through CenturyLink. It is literally the only thing we hate about our home, especially since I am working from home these days, the kids are schooling from home, etc.

The modem we have is the original Zyxel PK5001Z, and is at least 5-years old (I vaguely remember swapping it out early on with another from CenturyLink).

On their website, the CenturyLink "preferred" ones for DSL are:

    • Actiontec C3000A
    • Greenwave C4000LG
    • Zyxel C3000Z

Note that for wifi we use an Eero mesh network that is (obviously) cabled into the PK5001Z. Availability through the house is fine with the beacons. But once every few weeks we have to reboot the Zyxel as things get sluggish.

Would swapping out for a more modern modem matter at all? I have considered wading into the waters of wiring LAN ports into a few places (such as the dining room which is our make-shift office). Ultimately the limiting factor is the crappy speed we have available, but if I can make it measurably better I'll buy something newer.

Can devices in network locations access or do anything harmful to your computer?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:38 PM PST

    Here's a picture: https://imgur.com/kz2XbvL

So basically I have a roommate that lives downstairs that uses something called PPTV, some sort of Chinese streaming thing as far as my Google-fu can tell. One day I go into This PC and I see this show up under Network Locations. I'm just curious, what does this mean? Why is it there?

I dunno, maybe I'm a little paranoid for no reason. But I'm also curious why this shows up on my screen - I don't have this PPTV program at all on my computer.

Unable to connect to 5g wifi network with compatible card

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:38 PM PST

Network Adapter: ASUS PCE-88 802.11ac Network Adapter
Recently went into my router gateway and saw that my desktop PC is connected to 2.4g, while other devices on the network are connected to 5g. Upon running netsh wlan show drivers to check adapter 5g compatibility it came back with Radio types supported : 802.11ac 802.11a 802.11n 802.11g 802.11b which means I should have 5g capabilities. Upon going into device manager > network adapter > properties > advanced in order to edit the Preferred Band property I saw in a guide I was greeted with a plethora of properties I hadn't seen in any screenshots and was unable to find the Preferred Band or 802.11n Mode properties.

Here is a list of the properties displayed in my device manager: https://imgur.com/a/tqAW1hY
Any advice or points in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Also please feel free to suggest any changes to my properties to make stuff run more smoothly. All settings are default except Minimum Power Consumption, which is disabled.
Thanks in advance for the help
