Want to install Linux on USB

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 07:14 AM PST

Hi, I am learning Python. I am not from a programming background. I just know basic html and Perl. I saw a few videos on youtube about booting Linux from a flash drive and I don't really have any specific use for doing so. I am just curious to use Linux for first time.

It would be great if you guys could tell me which Linux distro I should choose and any tips or guide on how to do so. I know the basics of what and how to install but every video uses a different software to copy it on the usb and also the version itself is different. I would like a linux distro which would be good to learn programming and also user friendly for a first time user like me. Thanks.

    Lan and hostnames

I'm able to ssh between hosts on my LAN using IP addresses. What has to be done in order to ssh to them with their host names? Running Ubuntu and CentOs.

    Hi team,

I'm working with an OpenVPN setup and trying to get RDP working and would like your advice on the appropriate UFW rule needed for the below tun0 block of 3389 to be allowed?

There is more than one way to achieve this from what I've googled but would appreciate some advice which is security conscious.

To note these entries did not seem to work either ;)

How to run MS Office 2013 on Linux Mint Mate 20.1?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 09:31 PM PST

Hello everyone and thanks in advance for helping me.

So I shifted from Windows 10 to LM Mint 20.1 this week. My school wanted me to make my computer practicals on MS Office 2013 as my office suite as it is being taught in my computer classes. So I dual booted. But I don't want to use the slow Windows instead of crazy fast Linux Mint Mate 20.1. So I want to know if I could run the MS office suite on my linux machine and completely remove Windows. I don't want to use Wine as I heard that it can make my machine vulnerable to Windows malwares. I don't even have enough resources to run a VM smoothly. I only have 2 gb of ram. Please also tell how to remove Windows from the dual boot.

Edit: I decided to talk to my teacher and he said I can use Office online and Libre Office. If I need to use MS Office then I can use the Windows computers of the computer lab. Thanks everyone for explaining this much.

Want to install Linux; need a rundown tailored for me

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 10:50 AM PST

    Hey!

I have a few years experience in web development and MANY more working with computers, yet I've avoided Linux like the plague, sticking with Windows whenever I built a new machine or bought a prebuilt for whatever reason.

Today I want to change that and install Linux on my primary PC. Obviously I understand how to install a operating system, I've actually prepared a USB for this purpose though it won't be used as the boot device, my SSD will. However, I've heard that Linux is an entirely different beast so I want to be prepared.

I'm also looking for something that would support gaming. Yes, I understand the GIGANTIC asterisk that Linux has when it comes to gaming; a lot of games won't work, support is limited, multiplayer games have an especially hard time, but I know there's been efforts to alleviate that.

    My hardware is as such:

    CPU: Ryzen 5 2600

    GPU: RX580 8GB

    RAM: 16gb DDR4

Storage: 1 TB Hard Drive and 250GB SSD (the SSD has Windows 10 loaded on it).

Can I repair a bjorked version of Mint, or so I just have to reinstall everything?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 12:56 PM PST

Built my own system back in October. It is a duel boot with Linux Mint and Windows 10. Didn't realize I would like using Linux so much, so it has become what I use the most (mostly browsing the internet, YouTube and streaming). I set up a small partition for Mint, so it filled up pretty quick from the updates. I found ways to manually clean the drive from a website, and freed up some space by deleting temporary and old update files.

Soon, the warnings about hard drive space stated popping up again. I looked for programs that could automatically clean the drive and went with BleachBit. I ran it, but it had a lot of warnings, so I left a lot of the options un-ticked. It cleaned a little bit, but the drive space warnings were still popping up. So, I was a dumb ass and ticked all the option boxes on the program and ran it.

After it was done, it said I had 0mb space left! Tried to reboot, and couldn't get past the log in screen. Played around with the boot options, and now all I get is the terminal window, asking me my log-in and password. When I type them in, it just goes to a blinking cursor.

Is there a way to repair my desktop copy with a portable thumb drive copy of Mint, or will I have to just reinstall it back to the hard drive?

Can KDE be the new DE for low powered computers?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 08:32 AM PST

KDE is going to be the new XFCE/LXQt with a modern look.

According to an article by Forbes given here, it is clear that KDE has way less ram usages than XFCE. KDE has a modern look while being lightweight according to the article. So it can be easy for some users like me who want DE which is lightweight while being an eye candy. Earlier this week, I migrated from Windows 10 to Linux Mint Mate. I just a moment thought that KDE can be better but I think I should ask you geniuses first if KDE can be able to infuse new life in old computers.

NVIDIA card not being used as default GPU on pop OS.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 06:42 AM PST

In settings, when I go into about, it shows my GPU being "NVC1 / Intel® HD Graphics 4000 (IVB GT2)" When I already have a geforce 635m. Is there any way to use my NVIDIA card as the default? Keep in mind that I can't use the NVIDIA proprietary drivers since they don't work with the current version of steam proton.

    Webcam doesn't work

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:27 AM PST

Hi, im trying to make the webcam work on Tails, latest 4.14 version. The webcam is an old Logitech webcam, and it seems it has drivers in linux:

    http://qce-ga.sourceforge.net/

Generally, any USB camera with a USB vendor ID of 0x46d and a USB product ID of 0x840, 0x850, or 0x870 (so, 0x46d:0x840, for example), should work. See How to find the USB ID of a camera.

Great, my id says 0x46d, so it should work, but it seems I cannot install the drivers. I downloaded the source and tried to compile it with "make all" as suggested here:

    http://qce-ga.sourceforge.net/#download

    But I get this error.

    amnesia@amnesia:~/Tor Browser/qc-usb-0.6.6$ make all awk: cannot open /lib/modules/5.9.0-0.bpo.2-amd64/build/include/linux/version.h (No such file or directory) /bin/sh: 1: [: -ge: unexpected operator /bin/sh: 1: [: -ge: unexpected operator cc -I/lib/modules/5.9.0-0.bpo.2-amd64/build/include -nostdinc -iwithprefix include -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -DNOKERNEL -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -Wno-trigraphs -DHAVE_UTSRELEASE_H= -pipe -c qc-driver.c In file included from qc-driver.c:47: quickcam.h:79:10: fatal error: linux/autoconf.h: No such file or directory #include <linux/autoconf.h> ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ compilation terminated. make: *** [Makefile:175: qc-driver.o] Error 1

It has something to do with "autoconf.h". I went in the Synaptic Package Manager and downloaded the "linux-header" stuff but still happens. Any ideas?

Btw the webcam shows up on "lsusb" list as an USB device that's connected, however cheese and Webcamoid both don't detect it, so im assuming it has something to do with the driver not installed? not sure.

ExpressVPN install throttled my WiFi connection and forced me to reinstall off USB.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 08:59 AM PST

    So,

I have spent the last 24 hours looking how to setup linux etc after a virus scare on windows. I've formatted everything and reinstalled windows before coming to Linux.

I'm running linux mint mate x64 - and I honestly love it already even though it gives me headaches.

Last night, while trying to get ExpressVPN to run I was talking with chat support and after using some command line install the package - internet throttled and I couldn't load anything up except the linux mint firefox page. Every other device was fine. I have no idea what did it.

I'd also like to figure out how to do a complete scan for residual malware or rootkits that could've been present on my previous windows build - Rootkit Hunter seems to be the best, but I cant find a link with a trustworthy source code/download.

I'd also like tips on how to ensure I'm safe and secure - I'm running ublock origin, and linux mint firewall to block all incoming connections. (Will that effect an interview via zoom?)

Creating usable data from .dat and .idx files from Unix server?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 10:01 AM PST

I exported data from an Oracle EBS server in .dat and .idx format. The original server is an IBM AIX Unix box. I am able to open the files several different ways, however the usable data is combined with other unusable data (letters and numbers). I have tried Oracle Application Testing Suite, gedit, and excel so far. Is there a way I can get the usable data into excel format?

I have access to any number of distros, but my daily driver is Linux Mint 19.3; Intel 8400; x370 Chripset; NVIDIA GTX 1080; 16GB RAM; 10 TB

    Any help is much appreciated!

I have a USB microphone. On Windows I can open the driver controls where I am able to set volume, sample rate, bit depth, exclusive mode and critically loopback. The mic has built in monitoring, but it can only be controlled in the driver-- currently its always running, is there any way for me to control this?

    Deepin? Yes.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 06:07 AM PST

Hello everyone, I have been following the evolution of Deepin for a long time (since 2012) and I really believe that it is one of the best taking into account the objective with which it was created. I feel like people lower his reputation for coming from China; contrary to what happens with Elementary OS. These are the two OS that I have been following and I believe that deepin was always superior, fundamentally when it is defined by using debian as its base.

I feel that behind Deepin there is a great team of specialists working for the best.

I can understand the mistrust that a Chinese company can generate behind this, but I also believe that it contributes to the objectivity of the analysis to put this point above the rest of the operating system.

Actually the latest version released of deepin is excellent, stable, and aesthetically almost perfect. It is running on i3 4005U (old) hardware, however there are no problems.

I invite everyone to try this OS.

I hope these words serve to get rid of some preconceptions.

    Sorry for my Google English.

    A warm hug

Question about the tee unix command

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 01:12 PM PST

I've had the Linux Command Line by William Shotts for way to long and haven't got around to finish it. I recently came across the tee command but don't really understand its use case and when it would be relevant to use.

One of the examples given is

    ls /usr/bin | tee ls.txt | grep zip

how is this any different from?

    ls /usr/bin >> ls.txt | grep zip

Afaik the tee command is just reading the standard input of the ls command and also then "handing off this data" to the file "ls.txt" and to grep. I'm not really sure how tee is necessary when you can use just use redirection from the command line.

    Expand Main Partition Ubuntu Server

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 12:39 PM PST

I recently bought a new hard drive for my home sever but I need to get all the data moved from my old drive to the new one. The old drive was a 250gb drive and the new one is a 2tb drive so I need to expand the main Ubuntu partition to really benefit from the larger drive. I cloned the partitions from the 250gb drive to the new 2tb one but I still need to expand the main one. Can someone help me to do this? I am running Ubuntu Server 20.04.

How to make sure I won't catch a virus decompressing files (.7z, .zip, .rar)?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 02:12 PM PST

I know that linux viruses are pretty rare.

I know that my linux machine doesn't have any (not targeted) viruses because I didn't give permissions to any software or script shady or weird. However, I have files that I know (probably aren't but) could be compromised (cough r/piracy cough). I also know that compressed files can carry viruses on Windows. Does the same apply to linux? Should I be worried about those files?

Also. What about the execution of .iso files that are supposed to be media? Is it safe?

    Thank you for your replies.

My specs: Ryzen 7 2700x Nvidia GTX 1660 super
