New laptop basic questions - Lenovo

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 11:30 AM PST

I'm looking for some basic guidance. I am an adult going back to school. I bought a new laptop but am very much not tech savvy. I just want to make sure I care for it properly. Some basic questions I have (posting on mobile, I see people say this for formatting issues or whatever)

    1. Should I let the battery die once before charging it again to help with battery life?

    2. I assume best practice is to always shut it all the way down when not in use, but is that necessary?

    3. I don't know anything about ad blockers or virus prevention software - any help here is extremely helpful & appreciated

I'm sure I have more, I just haven't thought of it yet. I just want to ensure I take care of this computer the way I should be. If I can avoid paying Best Buy geek squad for basic help, you better believe I will! Happy to hear any other tips or things I need to know as well. Grateful for all you tech savvy non-computer illiterate folk out there.

Sincerely - Confused middle age tech illiterate adult

    SSD

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 12:58 PM PST

So just got my new SSD a Samsung 860 evo 250GB installed it in my laptop, and after waiting around setting up windows 10 again and downloading all the updates my laptop is really slow slower then when I had a HDD in, it's struggling to balance 2 tabs in Microsoft edge and my cursor is lagging around the screen any suggestions to as why? As I said I've downloaded all the updates and I've ran a diagnostic in Samsung magician and in the boot menu and it all comes back good I wasn't expecting the SSD to be that much faster but I certainly wasn't expecting it to be slower

My laptop is close to dying

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 12:51 PM PST

Hi guys. So I have this HP pavilion g6 since 8 years and it was doing its job making presentations for school 1 time a month. Now with online school things are getting bad: the 2.56 GBs of ram is always running on 90% and the CPU on 100 (i3 m350 or so) while only having 5 tabs opened. It's so noisy and hot and it's veryyy slow. I ordered a slim 7 but it will take 1 month to deliver. Do you have any tips on how I could improve its performance?

[Mr.Mobile] ASUS ZenBook Duo 2021 Review: Twice The Screens For Half The Price

Truth about M1 and why it's bad for professionals but great for common people.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:52 AM PST

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nG3P6NRmpD4

TLDW: It's a great machine for many casual users, it's silent doesn't overheat and does what its supposed to do, however once you deviate from the norm and try something unusual or very demanding the M1 will fall very quickly flat on its face due to it's architecture. It's simply not meant for demanding things, this is also the reason why you don't see a full M1 lineup on the bigger notebooks and Mac/IMac's.

    Intel or AMD?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:38 AM PST

I didn't know whether to post this on Dell or laptops but basically my laptop broke yesterday and I lost all my files RIP but since then I've been looking at laptops to buy. I don't know much about them but I've narrowed it down to a Dell with an i5-1135G7 processor and a Dell with a Ryzen 7 4700U processor. Does anyone know which one is better overall? Thank you so so much!!

edit: I also don't know whether it's worth me getting a 512GB laptop or getting a 256GB one. I usually use my laptop for schoolwork and to sometimes play games.

    LG Gram BIOS

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:19 AM PST

I just bought a used LG Gram for school, and everything is great, except the bios. I googled and ctrl-alt-f7 supposedly enables additional options in BIOS but on mine it does nothing.

All i'm trying to do is enable hot keys without having to press the fn key lol. LG Control Centre has that option but it disabled itself after a restart and having to re-enable it every boot is just annoying.

    Specs: LG GRAM 13Z970 i5 7200u Intel HD Graphics 620 8GB 2133MHz single channel 256GB SATA SSD

I spilled cocoa on my laptop keyboard

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 08:14 AM PST

This morning I accidentally spilled cocoa over my laptop keyboard. I unplugged it quickly, turned it upside down and by using paper towel, I removed liquid.

I left it upside down to dry for couple hours but nothing came out... I turned it on quickly just to check and everything is working perfectly except letter O is glitchy.

How long do I need to wait to use laptop again, I got Uni essay to write this weekend and will my laptop be fine and survive?

Sorry for being clueless, it happened to me first time.

Help. What Ram should I use, 2400 or 2666

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 07:01 AM PST

So yeah, my laptop uses a 4gb ddr4 2400mhz Ram and I'm planning to upgrade it into 8gb

But when I opened and checked it, it's stock ram was 2666. Should I buy 2666 ram or would a 2400 ram work too?

    Laptop Fan Control

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 06:39 AM PST

HP Elitebook x360 1040 G7 Core i7 10th Gen/16GB ram hooked to HP Thunderbolt G2 dock and 2x 4k monitors. Drivers and firmware are all up to date.

The laptop fan likes to kick up to medium speed, even when CPU is only 15% or under. This happens on regular internet browsing and other low resource utilization activities. I've also noticed that while WebEx meetings are running, the fan kicks on the most with that app, even though the CPU is still 15% or lower...

Does anyone have recommendations for any fan controllers or ways to lower the fan speed? I can't be the only one with this issue. In the past I've used Notebook Fan Control, but it doesn't seem to work with this model.
