/var is full in Ubuntu 20.04 - how to resolve? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 10:08 AM PST I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 and I have 9.31 GiB to /var, and it's now at 7.90 GiB full. I got a notice that says it's nearly full and I need to clean it out. I suspect it has to deal with the fact that Zoom and one or two other programs are crashing a lot but I'm not sure. I've tried looking, however, can anyone guide me on how to clean this appropriately? Edit for clarification: Here is how the system is structured (again, at the advice of my friend/roommate who was a computer person:

Is there any Linux OS optimized from Atom Z CPUs? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 04:38 AM PST Ideapad 100s 11by Windows 10 is so slow on this laptop even LTSB version. I use this for simple tasks like studying from PDFs and writing assignments. I've tried Linux before but I needed a botia32 bit image but the laptop got so hot and the CPU peaked at 100% all the time [link] [comments] |
Dual boot windows on existing encrypted lubuntu install Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:21 AM PST https://www.techsolveprac.com/install-windows-after-ubuntu-dual/ I feel like I should know the answer to this, but... I want to dual boot windows 10 alongside ubuntu on my thinkpad t440p because I need to practice powershell. Vm's are okay, but drain resources and run through battery I'm using the guide above. When I installed lubuntu, I installed it on the entire drive encrypted the drive. If I create a partition on lubuntu, will the encryption carry over to the new partition that I want to install Windows on? If not, is it possible to remove encryption from a linux drive? Why Fedora performs better than Ubuntu/Debian? Posted: 23 Jan 2021 07:54 PM PST Hello people! I'm testing some distros (Ubuntu/mint/debian/fedora) and I found that fedora performs noticeably better in terms of graphics. When I stressed Ubuntu/debian there was really hard framedrops/lag/stuttering with gnome/cinnamon. Fedora also lags ofc but only in a much heavier load. I've tried Ubuntu 20.10 with gnome(both Ubuntu and vanilla sessions)/cinnamon/kde/xfce and mint 20.1 cinnamon with all updates, the latest mesa from oibaf and kisak PPAs and xanmod/liquorix kernels. Debian unstable with gnome/cinnamon/kde/xfce and all updates ofc. Lastly Fedora 32/33 with gnome/cinnamon/kde/xfce. In my experience Fedora 32 and 33 outperformed Ubuntu/Debian even when fedora used older versions of xorg/mesa/kernel. Ubuntu and Debian, all DEs, have similar performance, nothing noticeable. Also Ubuntu/debian with kde/xfce were similar with fedora kde/xfce. So the big difference was only with gnome/cinnamon. Does Fedora use some different mesa configuration or something?? All distros used modesetting, ext4 and xorg session. CPU/GPU: Intel Core i5-7200U / Intel HD 620 [link] [comments] |

Are my kernels old, or is my root partition not large enough? (Ubuntu 20.04) Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:54 AM PST My "/" partition filled up (it's 19GB) and my computer won't boot to the GUI anymore. I can get to the base terminal but that's it. Running Gives me what looks like 3 different kernels, 5.4.0-59, 5.8.0-36, and 5.8.0-38 Using autoremove doesn't remove anything, but I literally can't install gparted to extend my root partition using the massive amount of unused space in my home partition, I get the "out of space error" I'm at a loss as to what to do, does anyone have a solution? Is there an app to change apps' icons? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 02:38 AM PST I know that you can easily change applications' icons using terminal, what I'm looking for is a UI app that does the process, basically that shows all installed apps, when you select one, it let you browse to pick an image as icon. Should I uninstall packages that have been kept back in my system upgrade? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 01:12 PM PST I installed Refind to manage grub dual boot, and whenever I "sudo apt upgrade" I get this:
Is it ok to uninstall this packages? Or should I keep it even if it wont upgrade anymore? I am in doubt if they are being used. [link] [comments] |
Can someone help me "remount" two partiotions to a new folder? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 01:03 PM PST To keep it short. I had a friend, who I'm no longer talking with, help me with partitioning and mounting two of my harddisks to where I'd like them to be. Today I realized the place they're mounted is not optimal for my use case.. I need some help either remounting them to a different directory or some very laid out instructions on how to raid0 them and mount them as a single folder.. Would prefer raid0, but I realize it's maybe a bit too much to ask strangers to help me with - so remounting them to a different directory is better than nothing. Data loss is not a problem by the way, they're both empty. As you can see, sdb1 and sdc1 is each mounted to /opt/data1/ and /opt/data2/. I need them in my home folder instead either as a raid0 in a single folder called data.. Or (what's more reasonable to ask strangers to guide me trough) simple just two separate folders. I've tried reading docs and guides, but I'm honestly too scared to try anything and maybe risk having nothing mounted at all, I need some real handholding and dummyproof steps on what to do from here. Running Ubuntu 20.04.1, no GUI. And i should mention, I'm not completetly stupid with Ubuntu.. It's just harddisks and filesystems that I'm having a really hard time to grasp. P.s. I do have webmin installed, if it's easier to guide me trough that.. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Jan 2021 10:54 AM PST I can't connect to my university's wifi (eduoram) with my Linux Laptop. It is able to connect to every other network I tried, but not this one. I can also connect to eduoram with every other device I own. Just not with Linux. I set up everything according to the documentation I found on the web. (Tried with and without the certificate and so on) I am using Zorin OS Core (which is an Ubuntu offspring, I think) and my network card is Broadcom Limited: BCM43142 802.11b/g/n Is it possible that the driver I had to manually install to get wifi running in the first place, doesnt support WPA2 Enterprise ? I currently use my old android via USB-Ethernet, but I want that USB-Socket back. [link] [comments] |

Can KVM virtual networking be configured to behave like a Hyper-V Exernal Switch? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 10:13 AM PST I have a Hyper-V server running a bunch of Debian guests right now, and I'm not satisfied with how things are working compared to when I was running on the bare iron. I'm just running a few home server type things like Plex, Zoneminder, Homebridge, etc., and everything but Plex seems to work fine for me. Right now, my Hyper-V server has a NIC dedicated to the guest OSs. I configured this to use a virtual switch called "guests" and that allows all of the VMs I create to be seen by my router, where I use address reservations to give them IP addresses based on their unique MAC address, and that allows the VMs to behave like any other real machine on my network. I'm trying to do the same thing with another machine running Ubuntu 20.04 and KVM to see if it improves my Plex issues, and if it does, I'll go with Ubuntu/KVM on my main server, but this network issue seems like the final hurdle to get over. Is there a way to get similar behavior with KVM? Is there a better way to do this that will still allow my VMs to work with the rest of my network as though they're regular machines on the same network? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:55 AM PST Hello everyone, Ive been using fish for a while now and I enjoy the overall experience. However I find that the autosuggestion feature isnt quite as logical as I would like. Ive heard that many likes fish simply because of the autosuggestion so I was a bit underwhelmed by its functionality. Im not sure if the reason is that its hard to program, if it would be to slow or that there already are addons that gives fish more intelligent autosuggestion. For example in my awesomeWM file I only have one file, rc.lua. So when I type "nvim" I would expect actually possible options to come up, however instead a suggestion from another file comes up that is impossible for me to open from the awesome file. There are many more examples when etc cd is giving weird suggestions Right now I assume that fish gives autosuggestion depending on the frequency of use of a command in the system overall. However, wouldnt it be better to have folder-dependent commands like "cat, nvim, cd" give suggestion depending of the frequency of use in that specific folder, and other non-folder-dependent commands like "pacman" can work like they do now. Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:44 AM PST In the middle of a game, my sounds suddenly stopped working. I can still hear the music, but no other sounds. Sound works fine everywhere else. I've checked settings, restarted my computer, scanned and repaired in Battle.net and re-installed the game completely, but the issue still persists. I'm on Pop_OS!, Ubuntu 20.04. Is there any clever soul who knows what the problem might be? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2021 09:30 AM PST Hello! So I'm currently trying to install Linux onto my Macbook Air 2019. Ice tried a few distros (Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and Ubuntu Budgie) however, I keep getting issues. Either it restarts in the boot process, or gets stuck and freezes indefinitely. Currently, while trying to install Linux Budgie, it has been on switching to inteldrmfb from EFI VGA for a while now, and this is the third time I've tried. Can I get some help? (Also, yesterday was my first time using Linux. I booted it on my old ish gaming laptop and I love it, so now I'm installing Linux on my macbook) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Jan 2021 08:26 AM PST I know these are stupid questions. Do I need to know C and C++ to understand Linux, Linux OS and kernel code? C++ is too hard for me to learn and I hate it. C I am fine with though. And do I need these languages to write device drivers? I don't know if I know exactly what they are and would love an explanation on that too. [link] [comments] |
Can't setup my Geary email client Posted: 24 Jan 2021 08:09 AM PST It says it has some problems with MTP/SMPT servers, even though I can set it up on other email clients without a problem? Is this some bug or something? [link] [comments] |

Problems with double boot win 10 and Manjaro KDE Posted: 24 Jan 2021 06:06 AM PST Hey, I have a problem with my double boot on SSD with Manjaro and windows 10. The windows partition cannot update itself, everyone I try it the updates are trying to get installed but are reversed. I was told in r/Manjaro that the problem is the dual boot and that I should deinstall manjaro and try the double boot from another SSD or HDD in the same machine. Do you guys have any thoughts on that? If not what is the best way to deinstall manjaro so that my windows partition suffers no harm. I rely on windows for several uni programs, so making the full switch is no option. Thanks a lot. [link] [comments] |
