    Linux Hybrid graphics

    Linux Hybrid graphics

    Hybrid graphics

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 01:14 PM PST

Can someone explain to me how hybrid works? Is it the same way Windows handles both the igpu and dgpu?

I use a laptop with an external monitors, and when I use both as dedicated the mouse flickers on my external display, where as hybrid doesn't.

Lastly how do I tell or make my Steam games run on my dgpu?

    I use pop os 20.10, kernel 5.8. Ryzen 4600hs and gtx 1650ti.

    Partitioning Disk Space

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 04:59 AM PST

Hello, hopefully a quick query to resolve some uncertainties in my head. My computer is getting quite old now and windows 10 is running slow and taking forever to boot, so I've installed Zorin OS on a separate 2TB drive, and I followed a guide that told me to make manual partitions. I did a "boot/efi" partition at 8GB, a root "/" partition at 25GB, a swap partition at 8 GB and a "/home" partition at the remaining space. I'm wondering whether I've done this right though, as the disk usage analyser is showing my available space as being the 25GB root drive. The home folder has an available space of 1.7 TB though, which is expected.

Basically I'm wondering whether I've done this right. What is the purpose of the root dir and why have I only reserved 25 GB for it? Similarly, what is the use of the home dir and was I right to allocate all remaining space to it?

EDIT: Just to clarify, I've not actually got an issue, it's running fine. My concern is that I don't want to encounter avoidable problems at a later date so I'd appreciate guidance.

    Windows+Linux dual boot

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 07:34 AM PST

I have been wanting to properly configure a dual boot on my main pc. Currently I'm running manjaro+xfce but with bspwm. I want to get rid of my DE altogether and when lightdm failed to start after doing pacman -Syu I decided it's finally time.

What I'm trying to ask is whats the best way to setup a dual boot with windows 10 and manjaro+bspwm? What should I install first? How do I correctly set up the partitions?

I have access to my current machine via tty with ctrl+alt+2

looking for a distro with all the new / unpopular toys in linux

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 01:20 PM PST

I'm not actually a linux noob. I've been using it for the last 2 or 3 years. but i wanted to know if you guys have heard of a distro that comes with all the latest and unstable tools to try in a vm.

the things i have in mind:

    • wayland ( x must not be present if possible)
    • pipewire ( im not sure if pipewire can be used without alsa and pulseaudio)
    • ufw
    • alternatives to systemd
    • libre kernel?
    • any other **** that you think might be comming in the future for linux desktop (apparmor? firejail?)

Should 'ls [directory]' use preceding and/or trailing forward slashes, or does it not matter?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 04:37 AM PST

    I'm confused by this.

    One time he uses

    ls Downloads/

    then another he uses

    ls /home

If I had to guess, I would have thought that both preceding and trailing forward slashes were required for the specified directory, but I guess not. So does it not matter so long as you have at least one or the other? I suppose using both is possible, but not required? I did look at the man page, but I can't see any information about this there. TIA.

Is there an alternative to the timer widget in KDE?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 02:02 AM PST

Size matters! The timer widget on kde is TOO small when placed on the panel. I have tried to fix the size by changing the configuration file as suggested on some forums but got no noticeable success. I have come across another widget named "Take a break" but it isn't actually what I am looking for. I want an actual timer widget where I can see the seconds, minutes and hour. Any suggestions?

Thoughts on exposing cockpit to the web? I'm torn.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 07:29 AM PST

I recently moved from a Windows Server to Ubuntu Server. I've always been a Linux lover, so when I made the decision to go Windows Server it particularly upset me, but I thought it would make some tasks easier for me, considering I admin Windows at work. But, recently I made the decision that enough was enough, Windows is more a problem for you in terms of your server, so I made the switch. Obviously, I'm loving it, often putting in two commands for a setup that would have taken a lot of additional steps in Win16.

Anyway, not why I'm here. I recently discovered cockpit and really like it, it's a pretty handy dandy tool, exactly what I wanted for quick system monitoring. However, I originally used AnyDesk to remote into my Win Server, but from my understanding, AnyDesk doesn't work on a headless server. Once I had cockpit setup, I realized it wouldn't take much to create a new subdomain and point it towards nginx. Provided I use a domain that's not named cockpit.mydomain.com and I use a complex as hell password, I'd think I'd be fine.

Although, maybe it's a terrible idea. Yet, I'm considering that someone could just as well hack my AnyDesk, or they could have gained access to all the other web facing apps I run, from jellyfin, wiki, ombi, mattermost over the last 2 years, but those have been fine too.

Any thoughts? I'm pretty careful about what I expose to the web.

Way to disable unreliable pop_os updates?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 02:10 PM PST

I lost almost 2 hours searching for what I could have done wrong, so now when I resize any window, as soon as I release left click, cursors teleports to the top-left corner of resized windows. So I came here to ask wtf I did wrong and to my surprise, it's not me, but some update as other people have the same problem:

    https://old.reddit.com/r/pop_os/comments/l107sc/mouse_pointer_jumps_after_adjusting_window_size/

    https://old.reddit.com/r/pop_os/comments/kzv8rp/help_mouse_pointer_at_the_top_left_corner/

so I want to disable this kind of updates, breaking normal working staff and causing bugs and leave only the most important security ones.

If I'm not wrong, leaving only first choice checked under "Updates" tab in Pop_Shop > Repoman is the correct way to do it? Should I disable something else?

Two more questions I would like to ask:

    1. Is it possible and how to resize windows borders on default theme in order to have more "clickable" space for resize?
    2. On logon screen, how to focus the password field by default, so I can start typing the password immediately? Right now, I have to press enter (or click on the user) in order for it to show the password input field. I'm the only one who uses this laptop, so no need for user selection.

Dual-Booting on same SSD. Good or Bad idea?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 06:35 AM PST

Pretty sure this question has come up a lot. But I can't seem to decide.

I've been thinking of dual-booting my laptop with Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20.04. It has a 256 GB SSD and 1 TB HDD. You can look at my partitions here.

I used to run Linux under my virtual box on Windows. And it has been the worst. I've got only 8 GB of RAM, and Windows will take-up 50% of it even during idling, although it somehow manages to run games and stuff pretty fine(idk how that happens). And so, I usually allocate just 2 GB for my Linux and it runs fine for the most part but it's kinda slow at times. I've been fancying this idea of dual-booting for a long time, and I thought this is the time I should do it.

I've read multiple opinions on dual booting. Some say it's all fine and some say their entire PC just got corrupted and stuff because of Windows messing up. One guy on askUbuntu stack exchange said installing both Windows and Linux on the same system is a bad idea because they can "overwrite" it somehow. AFAIK, those run on different partitions and are kinda isolated (correct me if I'm wrong). And all those were comments from like 3-4 years ago, and I wanted to know how things are looking now. Are Windows Updates messing things up these days?

Also, I need to know how I could install Linux on a partition on my HDD and if there are any specific guides available. I can't lose Windows for multiple reasons, gaming, college and I paid for this thing so I'm not gonna let it go + Windows is the only thing I know how to use and I can't use Linux for everything + I like Windows. But I really want Linux too. And since you guys know the best, I thought I should take opinions from you people. Should I dual-boot Win+Ubuntu? Can I install it on a partition of my HDD.

    UEFI Windows btw.

How to automatically backup entire Ubuntu 20.10 system to Microsoft Onedrive?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 07:49 AM PST

I would like a way to backup my entire (virtually) Ubuntu 20.10 system automatically so that when I break it (like when I broke my Bluetooth recently) or my SSD fails I can recover a previous system snapshot and avoid having to reinstall and configure everything. Microsoft Onedrive is a convenient place for me, I would obviously encrypt the backups.

Would Duplicati work for this purpose?

Should I exclude some system temp files? - if so which ones?

Are there some system files which cannot be overwritten when the system is running? (ie are dangerous to overwrite or are either protected by a mutex or some other software locking mechanism)

Is there a better solution to my underlying problem?

autofs not functioning correctly - please help

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 01:33 PM PST

    Hi,

After couple of hours I finally give up :) I have no idea what is wrong with my config.

It looks like my server (source of share) is configured correctly, because I can check from client machine (share receiver), that it is exporting what I want:

    user@user-desktop:~$ showmount 192.168.1.140 -e Export list for 192.168.1.140: /mnt/backup_tmp 192.168.1.101 /mnt/data_file-resources 192.168.1.101 /mnt/data_archive 192.168.1.101

Looks like firewall is not active on the share source server:

user@rpi:~$ sudo ufw status Status: inactive

This is how /etc/auto.master file looks like (on the receiver machine). First two lines comes by default, so I was not sure if I should touch them:

    +dir:/etc/auto.master.d +auto.master /home/user/mnt/shares/autofs /etc/auto.misc --timeout=20

And this is how /etc/auto.misc looks like (first line comes by default):

    cd -fstype=iso9660,ro,nosuid,nodev :/dev/cdrom data_archive -rw,soft,intr 192.168.1.140:/mnt/data_archive

after restarting autofs with command: sudo systemctl restart autofs it looks like /home/user/mnt/shares/autofs is a mountpoint, but I was expecting directory data_archive inside, but it is not there:

    user@user-desktop:~/$ mountpoint /home/user/mnt/shares/autofs /home/shares/mnt/shares/autofs is a mountpoint user@user-desktop:~/mnt/shares/autofs$ ls -al total 4 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Jan 20 21:04 . drwxrwxr-x 11 user user 4096 Jan 20 21:04 ..

I have no idea, what is mounted in ~/mnt/shares/nfs and why data_archive is not there. Please help me debug this problem :)

Confused with UEFI vs BIOS for Ubuntu install

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 01:26 PM PST

I formatted my HDD which had Windows on it because I got sick of it. It worked fine for about six months until I kept running into initramfs errors for the past few weeks until the HDD crashed and it said no OS was installed. I bought an SSD and am looking to install Ubuntu on there but I do not want to have this error again. When I am going through the guide to create a bootable USB stick, it asks to specify the Target system either BIOS or UEFI-CSM. Is there a certain one I should pick and is there anything else I should look out for when doing this process. Thanks!

What's the difference between Solus and Manjaro?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:38 AM PST

As a new Linux user I they both seem the same. They're rolling release distros, they're both lightweight and known to be quite fast. The only difference I can think of is the AUR on Manjaro.

What if I don't make a swap file in the btrfs filesystem when installing arch?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:26 AM PST

I happen to lack the superpower of understand arch wiki and am unable to get a swap file working in the btrfs filesystem, tho ext4 installs work fine.

Is btrfs worth enough to just yeet out the swap file and make this sacrifice? Or should I stick to ext4? And what happens if I don't have a swap partition?

I am yet to find a satisfactory answer to help me through the swap file creation on btrfs so yeah idk

    Fluxbox call menu via keypress

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:01 AM PST

I am trying to utilize my Fluxbox menu as something of a cure all, but am not sure how to summon it using a keypress. This would be helpful so I can use it while still at full screen. I opened up the "keys" control file and added a line below the menu by mouse 3 line. I essentially replicated the way it opens up the menu by right click on desktop, but with "Control d : RootMenu" instead. It is not working however.

I'm having trouble with linux on my chromebook

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:00 AM PST

    I'm attempting to learn linux for the purpose of hacking, but when I attempted to use the following command;

    find / -type f -name aircack-ng

a lot of lines will appear, but each of them has the words "permission denied" in them, alongside varying text I don't understand. My main concern is the whole permission denied part. On top of that whenever I try the command, cd /root, it will say permission denied once again.

I am the only user on my chromebook, and even after I removed linux and then added it back, it still says this. I searched up a solution, and found varying problems. One of them seemed to allow me to get into the root directory, but when I attempted to do the find command once again, it gave me about 3 lines, each still with the words "permission denied" alongside more text I don't understand, which I assume is because of my lack of experience and knowledge in terms of linux.

Does anyone know how to solve my problem and allow me to go to the root directory and see these commands?
