Could someone explain Desktop Environment versus Window Manager versus Compositor?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 09:37 PM PST

Linux intermediate here. I know the DE thing very well (like GNOME, Unity, XFCE, LXQT etc.) but do not understand how that functions in an association with WMs or Compositors. Also the posts in r/unixporn baffle me how changing the WMs can make the DE look entirely different.

All I know right now is:

WM takes care of the app/applet windows arranging the three buttons for the user and shows the application title

    &

Compositor has something to do with animation and effects of the windows while they appear/disappear etc.

Places to discuss about latest Linux software?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:31 PM PST

Is there an place where people discuss about modern software which takes advantage of newer, "bleeding-edge" Linux features? I know Phoronix, but that's not the kind of place I'm searching for. I'm talking about software, even unstable one, highly probably not well-known, written with modern features in mind, which takes advantage for example of the latest features of the Linux kernel, or even not-kernel like D-Bus. I'm searching for a place where people talk about what's in store for the future. Is there any?

Is Linux really so secure that there is no need or means to scan for malware even if I wanted to?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:15 PM PST

Using Mint for 6 months now, used Windows before that. My friend who got me into Linux told me no, there is no need to.

But, paranoid as I am, I searched for any malware scan program in the search and there isn't even any, so, is Linux THAT secure? Are there any malware scan program I can get just to give it a little check up if I want to?

    Thanks a lot.

Cyber Security student with no Experience

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:04 AM PST

Hello, I'm a student studying cyber security and have used windows forever but I am wanting to move to Linux. I plan on learning Linux on a VM and then hopefully moving to using Linux as my host OS. Anyways, what Linux distro is recommended for somebody like me just starting out. I have some programming knowledge in a couple languages and I am fully willing to learn a new OS no matter how difficult.l

    Thanks for the advice :)

I am having an issue running Epubor Ultimate with Wine on Ubuntu 20.10.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:35 PM PST

I had Epubor installed and working fine. Some time pasted and I ran it again and it opened fine. There was a notice to upgrade so I did. Now when I double-click the desktop icon, I see it try to run then it disappears and never loads. I looked at the desktop configuration file and since this uses Wine, I really do not know what it should look like. I am thinking something in it is not right and that is why it is not loading. Here is what is in that file for all to see:

    [Desktop Entry] Name=Epubor Ultimate Exec=env WINEPREFIX="/home/alphagenius/.wine" wine C:\\windows\\command\\start.exe /Unix /home/alphagenius/.wine/dosdevices/c:/users/Public/Desktop/Epubor\ Ultimate.lnk Type=Application StartupNotify=true Path=/home/alphagenius/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/Epubor Ultimate Icon=91C3_EpuborUltimate.0 StartupWMClass=epuborultimate.exe

If this looks good, then what would you guys recommend on how to fix it?

Can't decide on a distro for my new laptop.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 10:31 AM PST

    Hi guys!
I've bought a new laptop last summer, "Lenovo Thinkpad E15" with these specs:

    -i7 10th gen,

    -16 gb ram,

    -AMD Radeon RX 640,

    -512gb ssd.

I've been using Windows 10 since I've got this laptop (5 months), because it came with it preinstalled, and I didn't want to touch it. Before this laptop I have used Linux Mint for half a year on my old device but I'm still a noob!

I use the laptop for web & android development (8-10 hours a day), and sometimes I play minecraft.
I've been thinking of PopOS or Ubuntu.

Ps. I like Gnome interface more. :)

    What do you suggest?

    Thanks!

    Need image viewer

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:10 PM PST

I'm looking for an image viewer that can open images in fullscreen mode with just a double click (w/o using the command line) and that can swap to other images in the same directory with a keyboard shortcut. I do this in Windows, and want to transfer over the same experience to Ubuntu. I've tried feh, eye of gnome, and a few others. Any ideas?

Need project ideas for reusing an old laptop

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 11:42 AM PST

I still have my very first laptop (Toshiba A300, bought in 2007) that I'd like to repurpose as a new years project; I just don't necessarily know how I want to reuse it. It's specs include: Intel Core 2 Duo T9300, 4Gb ram, two 300gb HDD, and currently has a bare bones, fresh arch install on it.

I was thinking about setting it up as a nextcloud server, but in my case, it might be a bit redundant as I use Syncthing to file sync between my main desktop and my main laptop (not the A300).

What do you guys think I should do with this old laptop as a fun little linux project? I don't necessarily know the inner workings of linux but I do know my way around the terminal.

Safest linux distros? (Safe in terms of cybersecurity and privacy)

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 02:30 PM PST

I installed Ubuntu thanks to this sub a while ago, and it is fantastic, but there are a couple things I personally don't like (they are more flaws with me rather than Ubuntu), so I'm looking for an alternative.

I went with Ubuntu since it seems to be the most trusted distro. (The main reason I moved off Windows was for privacy and security reasons, and the peace of mind that I am not nearly as susceptible to malware.)

Is there any other distro that is safe in this sense? Many distros seem to be developed by a small group of people or even just one person, and use many different libraries that were also developed by small teams/one person, which doesn't give me much confidence in how much I should be trusting them. I'd rather stick to a distro that has many people checking over its components, so if anything fishy gets in somehow, it will be discovered quickly.

The only thing stopping me from using Linux is good touchpad driver. Please help! I've tried everything

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 02:20 PM PST

I'll start with this: I HATE Windows. It's crap and I don't see why anyone who is tech-savy would want to use it (there are a very few exeptions). Anyway, I was raised using Ubuntu and have tried a couple of other distros, and the touchpad always sucks. It sounds ridiculous, but a proper touchpad driver with good scrolling, pointer movement accuracy and mulltitouch gestures are very crucial for my productivity. I've recently tried using ChromeOS on my laptop and the touchpad was way better (but had pretty bad scrolling), and the terminal wasn't Linuxish enough. I couldn't find xorg.conf.d on it. Anyway, the driver was ok, and someone ported it to Linux on Xserver so I wondered if I could install it but it failed because it doesn't support current Ubuntu. Can anyone help me? Or perhaps suggest a solution (distro, package, I'll take ANYTHING!) for a proper touchpad gestures support on Linux? I'd relly appreciate it:)

    Btw, I have tried:

    Libinput-gestures

    Fusuma

    Touchegg

    two Wayland touchpad extensions

    Deepin

ChromeOS and ChromiumOS (which were the best so far, but I want REAL Linux)

MacOS (again, not Linux at all and touchpad did't work well)

    Synaptics something

How do I remove all permission-restrictions from a Samba share?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:00 AM PST

    Hi!

In my home network, I have a Debian machine running as a file server. It has a big hard drive hooked up to it with all my personal files. This way I can access everything I have, regardless of whether I'm on a laptop or desktop.

I'm working on a project in KiCAD, but when I try to save the project file (to a folder on the Samba server), it's saying it doesn't have permissions. The server has a password on it, so I want to make it so that anyone who has access to the server will have free permissions to do anything and everything with the files. I never, ever want the server to say "permission denied" on a file access. How do I enable that?

Here's the last few lines of my smb.conf:

[sambashare] comment = My Awesome Samba Share path = /media/username/HDD1 read only = no browsable = yes writable = yes valid users = %S

What tweaks do I need to make to ensure full permissions for anyone connected to the samba share?

Is there a way to automate the volume boot running out of space

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:37 AM PST

Every now and then I need to enter this command, it is not a big deal but it would be nice if this could be done automatically by the system. Is there some software that does this or a way for this to be done without having me to enter this command and entering my password?

I do not mind entering this command but this is one annoyance that people will have when switching to Linux since Windows never asks you to do such a thing after several window updates. Would be nice to know how this can be done atomically so I do not need to assist Grandma for example every thing this occurs.

Linux not handling 2 refresh rates well

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:30 AM PST

I'm using 2 different monitors - one of them 2540x1440@144Hz and the other one 1920x1080@60Hz and so far I haven't had any luck getting my desktop to actually run at 144FPS.

I've tried GNOME, Budgie and KDE. In KDE I added the MaxFPS=144 line under compositor in the kwinrc file and that didn't solve it.

This is probably one of the last big issues keeping me from making the switch. It might not sound like a big deal but being locked to 60FPS feels absolutely awful as it ruins the smooth scroll in browsers, makes latte dock stuttery as hell and almost unusable and it seems to be causing stuttering in my games as well. The FPS graph in Path of Exile shows that it's jumping from 60 to 144 FPS at a rate of twice a second and it's incredibly annoying.

Disabling the 60Hz monitor makes everything buttery smooth.

I should probably mention: Arch btw, Nvidia driver version 460.32.03 , GTX 1070, Xorg because I can't figure out how to try out Wayland

Debian GNOME slow/poor resolution, just me?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:56 PM PST

I'm relatively new to Linux and I am trying to set up Debian 10.7.0 Gnome in VirtualBox on Windows 10 but for some reason the resolution is awful. The text in every app and even in the menus is pixelated, sometimes to the point of illegibility, in addition to the general graphics of the desktop and app icons. Gnome has also been very very slow when I tried using it at all. For example it took about 3 minutes to open the terminal and about 5 minutes to open the Firefox app. Is there any common fix for this? I have another Linux distro that runs on the same computer through VirtualBox and it has neither of these issues.

Dualbooting Fedora 33 and windows 10

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 06:56 AM PST

I want to use windows 10 for gaming and fedora for pretty much everything else. I don't have much experience with Linux, as I have only used a single-boot pop_OS! for about a month, but didn't stand gaming on it.

Currently, I only have w10 installed on my SSD.

What I plan to do, is to partition my drives this way:

----700 GB from my HDD and 150GB from my SSD are partitions used for windows.

---- ~231GB from my HDD (remaining size) are partitioned to be '/home' and '/swap' . ~72GB from my SSD (also remaining size) are partitioned to be '/boot' and '/'.

With that said, my first question is, is there something wrong with any of this? I mean, is what I described above possible? Can it cause any errors? Figured it would be better to ask this before doing anything definitive.

I am aware that, regardless of if it theorelycally working I should still do a backup from what I think it is important on my Windows partition.

Now, does anyone have a guide (video, blog post, reddit post...) with a step by step on how to do this? I mean, just to be sure i wont be doing anything wrong.

If you read it until here, thank you for you attention and I hope you have a great day :)
