Complete Guide and Link Hub for beginners! Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:20 AM PST Hello! a few months ago I installed Linux and was a complete newb. I've learned a lot since then and would like to share my knowledge in a detailed post. # What distro should I use? For most people, I will recommend Manjaro, Mint, or PopOS LTS. Do you want all of the latest stuff and ready to sacrifice stability? Manjaro is for you. You want your system to just work but not look like windows? PopOS. You want it to be stable and look like windows? Linux Mint. If you've got PopOS and wonder: "where's the minimize button?", refer to this. Manjaro users, if u ever have an issue, the Arch Wiki will be there for help. If you have decided you want Manjaro but don't know which download to get, ill keep it simple: GNOME for good looks, KDE for the semi-windows-like look, or low-end systems. If your system is really low-end, the XFCE edition is good too. # How do I install software? Well, you can use the GUI that each distro has. For Mint it'll be the "Software Manager", for PopOS "The Pop Shop", and Manjaro users will have "pamac". You can use the terminal package-managers too. Mint and PopOS use apt, and Manjaro uses pacman. The number of commands can be overwhelming, but you only need a few. If it's not in your package manager, go to the website of the developer and get it from there. Most of the time, it will either come as an appimage, which you can run like an exe; a run file, which again, like an exe; a .deb file, only for Mint / PopOS (Debian based distros); or a tar file (like a zip, or rar) which is most likely to contain one of the above. # Gaming If you wanna run a windows-only game, Lutris is your answer, as long as the game is not on steam. To install it on Mint / PopOS, use this, and on manjaro just use pamac. To use lutris refer to TLE's excellent guide. Steam games are easy. Simple go to the steam settings and enable "Steam Play". Epic Store games are also quite easy. Just use Heroic. You can learn how to use it here. Useful resources: https://github.com/AdelKS/LinuxGamingGuide # Office Unfortunately, Microsoft Office software barely works on Linux. You can look for guides, but most of them are not likely to work. The only method I know of is this. This guide is for Debian-based distros only tho (Mint / PopOS), so Manjaro users will have to try to follow it and slightly modify the instructions. NOTE: names of packages might not be the same. winbind seems to be a part of samba. You should use "Libre Office" - a great alternative. Just make it look office-like: go to one of the libre office apps, press "settings" -> "user interface" -> "tabs". Remember, if you have questions, ask them here! (if anyone spots something wrong I'll be more than happy to correct it. just point it out in a civil mannar) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:43 AM PST I wanted to install ubuntu on external drive so I can use it anywhere I want. I followed this post: https://www.58bits.com/blog/2020/02/28/how-create-truly-portable-ubuntu-installation-external-usb-hdd-or-ssd everything worked, I was able to boot to ubuntu, I actually already set up everything I wanted, then I noticed I'm unable boot back to windows 10 (I need it for my work) so I followed step F in the guide and currently while I'm able to boot into windows I'm unable to boot into ubuntu again. on my laptop in boot device selection when I choose external drive nothing happens and when I tried same thing on my desktop I get error device is not bootable. not sure what to do now, I guess step E didn't work, maybe I should try it again, but honestly it is little confusing to me as this is only part I don't actually understand what I'm doing. I'm hoping I will be somehow able to make the drive bootable again so I don't have to set everything all over again. [link] [comments] |

Installed program not showing up Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:43 AM PST Hello, I just installed Bitcoin Core on Ubuntu 20.04 by in the following way. I downloaded, verified and extracted bitcoin-0.21.0-x86_64-linux-gnu.tar.gz from bitcoin.org. I then installed it in /usr/local/bin with the following command sudo install -m 0755 -o root -g root -t /usr/local/bin bitcoin-0.21.0/bin/* I can start Bitcoin Core by typing the command bitcoin-qt in the terminal, but if I click in the bottom left corner on those dots that show all your programs Bitcoin doesn't show up. I can't figure out how I can make it show together with the rest of my apps, sorry if this is super obvious! Thanks [link] [comments] |
Do I realy need my backup on an external HD when migrating? Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:23 PM PST Right now I'm trying to make a backup from my important HD with all my important documents and stuff I can't dowload later. I thought about to just make a big folder on my biggest HD that doesn't need to be wiped from Windows and org all that stuff later. Now I watched a video in which the guy said that I need to use an external HD that isn'T pluged in while installing. Is this realy nessesary? Can't I just use the HD I'm sure it doesn't need a full wipe? [link] [comments] |

Is there a faster filesystem for USB drives? Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:05 AM PST Fat32 is horribly slow on my Linux machine. What kind of filesystem are you using for your USB sticks (and is compatible with Windows)? [link] [comments] |
Best minimalist productivity programs? Posted: 26 Jan 2021 01:24 PM PST Hey there, I'm looking for simple, minimalist (perhaps terminal based) programs to handle task management and to-do lists. Right now I just have a bunch of separate folders with txt files for tracking progress on important tasks and projects but it's getting messy. Are there any good simplistic programs for managing that? P.S. I found jrnl and it's awesome. I'm looking for programs of that nature to improve overall productivity. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:08 AM PST Does anyone know how to change the name permanently on your network interface card? It's always been wlan0 but now it's zx56xx972 Or something weird like that. I'm running parrot OS so Debian type commands would be helpful. Appreciate any help. -FLo [link] [comments] |
Some Noon questions about Fedora Posted: 26 Jan 2021 03:49 AM PST Greetings everyone. I come from Arch/EndeavourOS land. I have few newbie questions about it. I have not used an RPM-based distribution in any real capacity so please excuse any "stupid" questions.' With that all of the ways, if you have any answers to some of the questions I have, please tell me about them. Thank you all for commenting and I hope to see you all later.
I hope you all have a splendid day. [link] [comments] |
How to disable mouse acceleration and control the cursor speed for all devices? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 08:54 PM PST I want to disable mouse acceleration for all devices? I added following configuration but it resets when I remove and plugin in the mouse. I /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-mouse-accel-disable.conf
Is there an easy way to just disable mouse acceleration and set the cursor speed permanently. Is there a way where I can just do that for any mouse without creating a udev rule for a specific device ID or name? [link] [comments] |
[Help] KDE - hardware volume wheel not working with PipeWire Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:17 AM PST I've recently (this morning) switched from Manjaro KDE to ArchLinux (with a KDE desktop). All a great success, except for my audio stack (which has always been a problem for me). I've noticed that PulseEffects has moved from PulseAudio to PipeWire as it's backend, so I've decided to try using PipeWire. It's working great for me with the exception that my hardware volume wheel changes the volume on the wrong device. If I open pavucontrol, I can easily change the output volume to my headphones (or speakers) with the volume sliders under that particular hardware. When I play with the volume wheel, it changes the virtual device called "PulseEffects Sink" which, though has a volume meter consistent with actual volume, doesn't actually affect what comes out of my headphones. The same thing happens when I click the mute button - the "PulseEffects Sink" device is muted but the volume meter below it isn't muted and neither is what I hear. Does anyone know I can get my volume wheel working? [link] [comments] |

OBS won't recognize GPU encoding Posted: 26 Jan 2021 05:51 AM PST Hello! I use OBS and own an RX580. in OBS, there is only CPU encoding, and AMD GPU encoding does not appear. I use Arch Linux, the latest kernel, and GNOME if that matters. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:32 AM PST I have just setup my proxmox machine on Debian Buster and I am looking to add some VMs too it, I have an IP assigned to the proxmox node itself and I do have another additional IP to which I am yet to add. I've been reading online and it seems like I need to have bridges between the node and the VMs. My question is, what networking information do I need to assign to the bridge interface on the node and does the exact same network information need to be added into the VM? What needs to go where? Thanks [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Jan 2021 10:01 AM PST Hi everyone, I wanna start learning linux, I have used it before, I used Kali, but I just used it because of a course for hacking and didn't go that much in depth, just some tools and explaining them, nothing like what is cd and what it does. And wanted to ask someone more advance in this domain, where should I start learning Linux beside making Linux my main OS? I just know about Bandit on OverTheWire. [link] [comments] |
Building new non-gaming desktop computer Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:55 AM PST I'm find myself in the need to replace my 10 yr. old Dell desktop. I am familiar with the Linux desktop, currently running Gentoo, and have build numerous Windows systems for other clients. But in order to save time, I'm getting lazy in my years, and I'd like to know if there's any single website that I can find if the parts required are Linux compatible, most importantly native Linux driver update support. I know that I can search by manufacturer and I know that there are many how-to build sites, but I've never seen one where they mention the possibility of driver update availability. Yes, kernel updates sometimes cure this condition, but I'd still like to have the ability to do so myself. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Problems with MyPaint and GIMP 2.10.8 Posted: 26 Jan 2021 01:24 PM PST I am an old Windows user and used in GIMP with brushes from MyPaint. When I installed the program in Debian I realized that it comes with the MyPaint Brushes options, but they are not implemented. I tried to install them via terminal and it installed the MyPaint drawing software and not the brushes, eliminating GIMP. My question is if there is any way to download only the brushes, as they were very useful to me. [link] [comments] |

How to have separate scaling between two HiDPI monitors? Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:34 AM PST Hello, I have two monitors, one is 3440x1440, and the other is 4K. I am having a bit of trouble with scaling things. I am on Pop! OS. I was previously using the fractional scaling, which seemed to allow me to do have separate scaling between the two monitors (to clarify, I want to have 100% scaling on the 3440x1440, and 200% on the 4k), but then I noticed that when I did that, for some reason, it increases the resolution on both of my monitors, it makes the ultrawide 6880x2880, and it makes the 4k 5120x2880. I don't really want this, because it makes gaming a little bit impossible. I should specify, that in the display settings, the monitors still show as their proper resolutions, but in the Nvidia X Server Display configuration, there it shows the monitors as having the larger resolutions. As soon as I turn off fractional scaling, they go back to their proper monitors, but then everything is far too small on my 4k monitor. And I can't set the 4k monitor to scale to 200% without also setting my ultrawide monitor to 200%, but then that makes everything too big on my ultrawide. Please help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:18 AM PST Hello, I just installed Artix Linux together with xorg and i3wm. I added "exec i3" to my .xinitrc so when I type "startx" i3 starts up, but the problem is that everything looks glitched out and text doesn't display properly. The mouse shows up normally so I'm not sure if there is a problem with my configuration or i3. I don't know what I have to do to fix this issue and there doesn't seem to be much about this online. Why is it doing this? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Need help partitioning my main drive Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:08 AM PST Solved tl;dr: Skull fucked my main hard drive, now it's blank and I'm running MX on a usb and need help repartioning my entire drive to have 2 bootable partitions and anything else that is necessary. OK the long version- I downloaded pop!_OS and loved it, however with a growing interest in development and Linux in general, I decided it was best to download a second OS (which I chose MX) in order to do anything risky on that way I could use pop as my daily driver. Found out that pop being encrypted meant I couldn't repartition the disk so I said fuck it, I'll just do an auto install of mx and set aside 150 GB or so for pop and reinstall it after. Well being the noob I am, something screwed up upon the install and I got a notice saying grub failed use mx boot repair tool to fix, did that last night and followed instructions on google, and then tried again to boot, booted straight to bios, plugged usb back and went to see what was going on, upon opening gparted my entire SSD is unformatted. I don't care about recovering files or anything like thiat, just have no idea what a standard partition scheme looks like or how I should format everything, because currently it won't even try to write the OS onto the disk because I don't have an efi partition (or any) for booting. So I need to know all the partition sizes and formats and all of that if anyone is willing to help, because google is surprisingly limited for re writing an entire drive on gparted, they just have stuff for creating bootable USBs that as far as I can tell require significantly less partioning since my harddrive was divided into like 6 things before My rig is a 2019 Razer Blade Stealth 13 with an MX 150 Graphics card and 500 gb SSD, I;m happy to provide further information if needed. What noob-friendly distro is recommended for this computer? Posted: 26 Jan 2021 11:48 AM PST It's a laptop with an i5-8250u, 4GB of 2133 MHz RAM and a 5400RPM HDD. It struggles to run Windows 10, I can't have Word and a single tab of Chrome running without something crashing or very severe slowdowns. I'd also appreciate if the UI resembled that of Windows or macOS. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
