What is the best cheapest laptop for sub-$300?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 07:14 PM PST

    Hello,

Long story short, I play Runescape and recently friended someone who seems like a genuinely nice human with a bit of misfortune. I've learned they're playing the game on their phone, and in these fucked up times I thought it would be nice to just buy them a laptop to game on. It doesn't need to be elite by any means - Runescape has bare minimum requirements. Can you please recommend a decent laptop for sub-300$?

    Acer Swift 3 - Ryzen 7 4700U or i5-1135G7

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 02:51 PM PST

I am looking at the Acer Swift 3 and cant decided between the Ryzen 7 4700U or i5-1135G7. Both are $900 CAD and have 8gb memory and 512gb ssds.

I plan to web browse, stream video and maybe install WoW on it (not a big concern though). Very casual use.

Which one do you think would be better for my purposes or is the difference negligible? I would assume the Intel model is the absolute latest update of the Swift 3 just because the processor is newer. Might be wrong on that. All thoughts welcome. Thanks.

    Dell XPS 13

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 02:38 PM PST

Right off the bat I'd like to apologize if my computer terminology is off; I am not the most technologically savvy but I did my best. I bought a Dell XPS 13 back in August, right before I started my first year of college (a working laptop is a requirement for my major). Straight out of the box, it had a problem with the screen. A column of pixels couldn't show certain colors. The laptop was under warranty for one year, so they replaced the screen for free. In November, the headphone jack stopped working. At the time I was extremely busy with school so I didn't get it fixed; I just used wireless headphones or let the sound play from the speakers. A couple weeks ago, I used my laptop in the evening. The next afternoon, I opened it to find the screen totally black. No matter what I did to fix it, it wouldn't turn on. I knew the laptop was still on because the keyboard LEDs lit up. Dell agreed to come replace the screen again and fix the headphone jack while they were there (still free under the warranty). The screen was replaced last Wednesday. Immediately after the replacement I noticed issues with the touchpad; the two finger scroll didn't work anymore and it sometimes took a couple tries for me to click on something. When I looked in Device Manager, my computer told me I didn't have a touchpad connected, just a mouse (I have never used a mouse with this laptop). I called Dell again and they said they would come replace the touchpad. That appointment was today. The man who "fixed" my computer told me that the issue was actually with the motherboard, not the touchpad (I bear no ill will towards him; he did his best with what we had and it is not his fault that everything went to shit after his attempted repair). After he replaced the bottom half of my computer, the keyboard didn't work at all. The computer also couldn't connect to wifi at all. I have been told that I need to mail my computer to Dell for the latest fix. They are so far refusing to replace the computer under the warranty. My next semester starts on Monday. I am now struggling to find options for my classes because of Dell's mistakes. I have heard from a source at Dell that this model of computer was rushed to production after the pandemic hit and everyone needed a laptop at home. Mine is not an isolated case. I do not recommend the XPS 13 at all; it has caused me so much trouble and anxiety in the past couple weeks. (on a slightly better note, my sister bought the XPS 15 at the same time as me and has had no issues at all)

Should I install Dell SupportAssists updates (XPS 13)

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 02:16 PM PST

I just got an xps 13 and as is tradition with new windows laptops, windows updates had to install a bunch of stuff. However, it all installed and now, when I check for windows updates none are available but the "optional" ones (which I've been told not to install unless I have to). However I got a notification from the dell supportassist that there are many "urgent" updates that need to be installed, one of these is a bios update, when I did the windows update something happened with the bios, but I am unsure if it was an update or it just had to do something due to all the other updates/drivers being installed. Some of the recommended updates from support assist seem like they would have been covered by the regular windows "check for updates". Things like Intel UHD graphics driver, I'd imagine a graphics driver was installed with the windows "check for updates" but I don't know for sure as I didn't look through it thoroughly, I just know a lot of drivers were installed then.

TLDR: Is there a possibility that the dell SupportAssist updates would be giving me the exact same updates and drivers as running "check for updates" in windows settings did, should I install it's "urgent updates" and its just recommended updates in general even though I already ran the "Check For Updates" in the windows settings.

    Can someone please help me?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 01:48 PM PST

So I have a ryzen 7 4800h and I would like it to run at like between 3.1 and 3.4Ghz. If I set the CPU power management in the windows power settings to 99% it will run on 1.6Ghz max with 72Celsius if I set it to 100% it will run on like 3.9Ghz and 98Celsius. I tried the max megahertz option in the power management but it doesn't even change anything. Thank you in advance for your help. :)

MY brother thinks he's all techy and keeps telling me to pre-order the Samsung flex 2. Is it worth it? Its quite expensive, is there something else you would recommend?

I looked at this and I was taken aback at how cheap it was for the specs and was instantly skeptical. Does anyone know of hidden problems that aren't advertised.

Laptop recommendation for optimal use of Autodesk REVIT

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:09 AM PST

    Hello,

I keep reading articles about recommended hardware for Revit, but most of the time all high-end enthusiast laptops and parts are recommended in the articles (gaming GPUs, i9 or i7, 16GB RAM...). My budget is about 800-1000$ and I'm looking for a laptop that can run Revit for smaller projects. I'm aware that these laptops are somewhat bad in certain areas (all plastic build, no keyboard lights, cheaper panel) but can you recommend something with these minimum specs:
    At least 8 GB RAM
SSD - 512 GB or more
    15,6 display size
8th gen or newer Intel i5 cpu or it's AMD equivalent

    Thank you

Can you guide me to the laptop I need?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:37 PM PST

    Hello Thank you in advance.

I've got a 10 year old Apple MacBook Air that is starting to crap the bed a bit.

I don't play video games. At all.

    My needs are simple.

    1. I can easily download pictures and videos from my iPhone.

    2. I can use iMovie to make/edit small videos for YouTube.

    3. Must be able to use Microsoft word and publisher.

    4. Watch movies from Netflix, Amazon prime, YouTube, etc.

    5. ITunes.

I realize these might be old and there might be better systems and programs. These are just the things I've used for a decade and am most comfortable with.

I don't need a $10,000 laptop that Tarantino is using to make movies. I just need something to make silly ten minutes YouTube videos.

Any suggestions? My buddy suggested the new MacBook Air with M1.

Are dust plugs on ports generally safe?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:36 PM PST

I got some silicon plugs for the larger ports on my laptop and some of the smaller ones to, are these generally safe to use without damaging the ports?

I've also heard that they may pose a risk if left on while computer is in use.

How can I use my old laptop?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:36 PM PST

I bought a new laptop and the old one is just eating dust since I bought it. I have no intention of selling it. Can anybody suggest any good use of it where I don't have to invest any more money in it?

    Laptop suggestion

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 08:05 AM PST

Hi! I convinced my boss to let me get a laptop for work, so I'll be using it for work things (writing and such) but I'll also be using it for games and Netflix at home. So I just want something that isn't slow, isn't a piece of junk that will fall apart in a year, and has decent graphics. Budget is around 1kUSD but flexible.

I haven't had a laptop in yearrrrs. My last one was a MacBook and I liked the trackpad a lot on it but that's about all I liked about it. I don't want a touchscreen.
