Can I downgrade to Windows 8.1 if my PC never came with Windows 8.1?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:26 PM PST

I love Windows 8.1, I always have. My PC runs Windows 10 and I REALLY want to downgrade it to Windows 8.1. The thing is that the laptop never came with Windows 8.1, I came with Windows 10. So will it be okay if I install Windows 8.1 on it?

What would be a good version of Windows for me?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:07 PM PST

So I am still on Windows 7, occasionally test around with Windows 10 but I read online a lot about telemetry stuff, certain things not making sense as well and it really concerns me.

Id totally use Windows 10, but having to tweak it just to get it working well (reducing telemetry, fixing stupid UI issues) is annoying because it makes me feel like I'm trying to hold back malware. I know that Windows 7 is End of Life, and I am pretty technology literate. The main problem though is that I am never satisfied with ANY windows version.

Windows 7 has been running well for a while but due to the end of life and programs slowly dropping away its probably time for me to find another OS. Windows 8.1 is the same story.

Windows 10 is my only option, as I am not ready to move to Linux yet. Then I am in the situation where I have to find a version of 10 to use. Most of the time, there are 3 versions of Windows 10 in support at once. Currently it is 1909, 2004, and 20h2. I like the 20H2 new start menu, but prefer the simplicity of the Windows 7 one so I would use Open Shell, as well as that bringing better Windows Search and other improvements that I like.

Other than that, I have to find a flavor. In my case, I have an LTSC 2019 key. so I can choose LTSC 2019, Pro, or Enterprise.

I hear many good things about Enterprise being really well, with a lot of telemetry control and it being more geared towards schools, workplaces, and users who want control.

I don't know of any options. Just don't say "get off windows 7 and use 10 lol" because that is too plain. Explain to me what I should do and tweak in order to get the specific OS you reccommend to work well.

My focuses are privacy, simplicity, and compatibility.

    How to get winver 1909

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 04:34 PM PST

So I done a clean install today via USB and completely forgot it was going to be 20H2. I was on 1909 before and need to revert back due to certain software not working with 20H2. Is there anywhere I can download 1909 to install via USB?

    Windows sound low

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 02:58 PM PST

Hey, ive been having this problem ever since i got my new pc running Windows 10 Pro, where the volume seems to be very low no matter what. Even with sound mixer options and sound device options set to full, no apps will go above halway in the volume mixer.

For example when i blast spotify at full volume and check the volume mixer, the sound bar never exceeds over about halfway. Is there a way to fix this that i havent thought of?

    Thanks for any help.

Internet says "no internet, secured" but I have some access

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:37 AM PST

I'm on Windows 10. It will say "no internet, secured" but I actually have access to most websites. However, some websites and applications won't work, including the Spotify app, the Outlook app, the Epic Games Launcher, and epicgames.com. These apps and sites will tell me I have no internet connection. The internet service is being provided through my apartment.

I accessed router settings but nothing said anything about the internet being down or blocked. Every post I see online about the "no internet, secured" message says the person didn't have any access, which is unlike my problem. Maybe there's something about non-https sites that don't work?

I have reset my router, and diagnosed network settings multiple times. Nothing has worked.

How to receive Gmail desktop notification from Edge-based web app?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:12 PM PST

    Hey there.

I cannot figure out how to enable desktop notifications for Gmail web app, "installed" as a web app using new Edge. I DO have desktop notifications enabled in Gmail options. And yet, I never received a single mail notification. Meanwhile, my phone gets them regularly.

I'd love to use the standard Windows mail application, but although I can set a Gmail account just fine, the app does not see my labels - and I have pretty much everything organised to, and filtered to be exclusively label-based, unless I receive a mail from unknown or new source - only then it lands in regular "received" box, and only then I can see it in default mail app. Yes, I do have label visibility for IMAP enabled in Gmail settings.

Can you help me out here?

Troubles deleting "Windows Update" file ( 28go ) and Disk Cleaner shuts down.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:25 AM PST

So ... it's kinda all in the title. I am running a Windows 10 Family (version 1909 - 18363.1256) and when I run the disk cleaner, it finds a file "Windows Update" with 28 Go. When I try to run it, it either crashes before the end (the windows just disapears with no info), or it performs until the end but the windows update file is untouched !

I really hope you can help me with this, the file is getting bigger and bigger ...

    Have a nice year !

I installed Windows on a brand new SSD and got a BSOD

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:46 PM PST

I just installed Windows 10 on a brand new SSD, it all seemed to be going well until the windows initial setup crashed. As I tried to reboot I got a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION blue screen, the exact same issue what I had when booting off my old hard drive. Then the black windows loading screen froze and stayed like that.

    Starting Outlook in another domain

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:01 PM PST

I have written a batch file that starts outlook when the user logs in. I scheduled it using default Windows 7 task scheduler. The problem is that my login domain is different from my Outlook domain. In Task Scheduler has my login domain listed. So whenever I login, my Outlook prompts me for a password.

    Windows username: osdomain\user1

    Outlook username: domain2\user1

I tried batch file commands to start Outlook for a different user, but it didn't work. This is what I've tried:

    runas /user:domain2\user1 "" "%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office15\outlook.exe"

This prompts me for password but doesn't start Outlook.

I just want Outlook to start for domain2\user1, the password will be picked from the credential manager.
