Posted: 24 Jan 2021 03:56 PM PST Just curious really I guess! I have some rules set up for my NAS (UPnP disabled) but that's it - nothing set up for my Hue, Nest thermostat and a few other IoT devices. I understand it's not required somehow due to how these devices connect to their respective servers, but how does it work? How is it different from initiating a connection to my NAS which does require ports to be forwarded? [link] [comments] |
Can CAT5 wiring be used as CAT6? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:05 PM PST answered Apologies in advance if this is a dumb question. I am currently building a house which is supposed to be wired with CAT6 throughout. The wire they just ran says "CAT5" on it. Do I need to bring this to the builders attention and make them rerun the wire? Printed on the wiring it says "60% Dual-shield CATV cable CE & RoHS sweep tested to 3.0GHZ" [link] [comments] |
Higher packet loss with ethernet than Wifi Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:06 AM PST Hello, I have been struggling with packet loss for a very long time, so I was checking why that was happening today. I am in another room away from the router with an extender. My PC is connected to this extender through an ethernet cable, but my laptop is not. I was using ping plotter on both devices to check the packet loss, and I realized that on my PC (where I use ethernet) has higher packet loss than my laptop which uses wifi. Laptop packet loss : https://imgur.com/a/efXRwjW I tried connecting to my router directly through an ethernet cable, it was difficult because it is hard to access that room from my room, however I saw only a tiny bit of difference. I am curious to see why this happens, if anyone has any ideas? My house is a pretty old house, and the cable that connects our router to the whole network system goes all the way to the basement, which we assume is badly built since the house is very old. could that possibly be why? Or is this %100 on the ISP's end? Any help would be appreciated, thank you! [link] [comments] |
Getting kicked out of servers wile using ethernet cable but not wifi ps4 Posted: 24 Jan 2021 02:28 PM PST I have been dealing with getting kicked from online gaming while on Ethernet cable for a while now. For example, let's say I play Zombies on Cold War using my Ethernet, it kicks me out of the match around round 30 every time. The same goes for warzone. I'll get kicked out of the chat party first, then a couple of mins later I will get kicked offline completely. I don't lose complete internet connection, I just get kicked out of the server. This happens with every game I play. I switched to wifi and it did not kick me anymore but I have a nice router and modem set up and it sucks that I can't use my Ethernet cable. The wifi tends to be a bit laggy also. I have tried many things from basic rebooting, restoring to factory settings, port forwarding, using different cables, switching the Ethernet ports, etc. I even spoke with Netgear and they could not tell me what was wrong. Modem and router are not even a year old. I am looking to get a PC soon and I don't want to deal with the same issues. Any help or advice? I am out of options. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2021 06:06 PM PST Hi there, I live in a apartment where it comes with free bell Wi-Fi where the router is located in a closet and in every room there are ethernet ports/outlets in them and they work great. Unfortunately the WIRELESS signal is not strong enough in my room and I'd like to set up a wireless access point in there. My question is can I run an ethernet cable from the ethernet port/outlet in my room to the input of the POE injector that came with the AP and then run a ethernet wire from the POE output to the access point. I've seen lots of videos of people using switches and then going to the input and I'm confused on if I can't just go from the Ethernet outlet to the injector. Thanks [link] [comments] |
RJ45 Joiner on PSTN over Cat5e Posted: 24 Jan 2021 06:56 PM PST While running some cable up in my ceiling space I noticed that my telephone line coming in on cat5e is just joined to the cable from the port where I have my dsl modem with a punchdown joiner directly over the cupboard where my main switch is. It would be quite handy to have my modem in this cupboard too as it's very central in the house for wifi and would shorten the line by about 20m, which I figure couldn't hurt the speed. Conceptually, setting aside me screwing up the physical implementation, would removing the PSTN line from the punchdown connector and putting an RJ45 on allow me to then use a straight-through connector and a patch cable to drop it down to a modem in the cupboard below? Cheers folks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2021 04:40 PM PST I'm working on drilling through the top plate in my attic for some cable routing through the wall. It seems like I've made it 6" and I haven't gotten through yet. How thick cam these top plates be? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2021 06:51 PM PST Apologies if this problem has already been solved. I have spent a lot of time on this page and other forums trying to figure it out, and am still stumped. I am also fairly ignorant about networking beyond the basics, so apologies for that too. I moved into a new house about a month ago. I have Xfinity internet, no TV service, no phone service. Xfinity sent me a Gateway (Technicolor CGM4140COM), which I have set up in my living room. WiFi is working like a dream. My fiancee and I each have a desktop PC, which we'd like (and in her case, need) to connect to hardwired internet. After researching options, I bought a pair of Actiontec EBC6250 MoCA Adapters. Each room in our house has a coax line, but not ethernet jacks. The house has a MoCA filter installed in the crawlspace, where the coax lines come in from the street. I plugged in the MoCA adapters, enabled MoCA in my Gateway's admin tool, and everything worked great for a few weeks: we had fast internet on our desktop PCs. Last week, we had a big windstorm and lost power for a few minutes. When the power returned, the Gateway restarted, the WiFi came back online, but the MoCA adapters were no longer transmitting internet via ethernet to our PCs. MoCA remains enabled on the Gateway. The Power and Coax indicator lights on the MoCA adapters light up as soon as I plug them in. The Gateway recognizes when the MoCA adapters are plugged in because it shows them as "connected devices." But neither adapter is sending internet out via the ethernet cables. I have tried adjusting as many settings as I can understand on the Gateway and on our PCs, I have reset the Gateway to factory settings and then re-enabled MoCA, I have had several calls and text chats with Xfinity support. I cannot solve this problem. I have read in the last few days that perhaps Xfinity's Gateways aren't actually set up to do MoCA, or that the coax splitters in the house might not be rated for the right frequencies to allow MoCA. If either of these is correct, I am puzzled as to why these MoCA adapters worked for so long (at least three weeks). They continued working through a few modem resets and numerous PC reboots. Only after this momentary power outage have they stopped working, and I can't get them back. Anyone have any ideas about what's going on with out setup, or about how to fix it? [link] [comments] |
Can someone tell me the best available setup? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:57 PM PST I'm looking to buy the best available modem/router combo (or separate if recommended) for gigspeed service up to 940mbps. Any help is appreciated! So far im looking at the new orbi, or the cax80. Any advice? RCN 940mbps service. , maybe an 1800 sq ft apartment. Not alot of devices. No gaming. I just want to make use of what I'm paying for in terms of service. And have a router I can keep for 5 years or so if i buy a bigger house. [link] [comments] |
Turn USB3.0 external harddrive into NAS/accessible from gigabit switch/router? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:41 PM PST Will keep it short, I have an external harddrive with one of those usb 3.0 am(or micro b) to usb A 3.0 Port and I want to turn it into a NAS. Additionally I will buy a gigabit switch and gigabit router anyway so is there anything I have to keep in mind? I mean how would I even connect the external harddrive to the Switch/make it accessible in my home network given the fact that USB a doesnt fit into RJ45. Instead of plugging it into the switch I could plug it into the routers usb 3.1 port but dont I need something like a controller/device that handles data transfer? I( believe the router had something about NAS or Samba in the spec sheet). [link] [comments] |
Android USB tether RT-N66U won't work. ideas? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 01:03 PM PST At home I use my Android as a wifi hotspot. (unlimited data) I want to use my RT-N66U for my network. I am unable to USB tether my phone to my router. The router does not get internet connection. I followed tutorials and everything seems fine. When i connect my phone on my pc I get internet. So the USB tether seems to work. What is easiest way to get this to work? Buy a new router which is capable of USB tethering. Or are there other solutions? Phone: Xiaomi Poxo X3 with custom rom. Ethernet speeds are worse than my wifi speeds Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:57 PM PST I purchased a new NETGEAR CM500 and an Asus RT-ax3000 on january 4th, 2021. I recently switched ISPs and my ISP is telling me with my cable internet that I'm getting my 200Mbps download as provisioned. I have been troubleshooting this since January 22nd, 2021. When I noticed that my ethernet speeds were less than 10Mbps in state (kansas) with a ping over 200ms. While on my cellphone with LTE data off on my 2.4Ghz band is getting 190Mbps with a ping of 30ms in state. I initially thought my router was the fault, but from what I can tell after looking through my routers settings its not the routers fault. After reading through some documentation for the CM500 I noticed that the ethernet indicator when flashing says that the ethernet connection going to my router is not good and that if the light is a solid green the connection is good. Maybe I'm reading this documentation wrong but this would explain the poor speeds if the port isn't running at its expected 300Mbps. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:56 PM PST I had their 4G LTE gateway and recently go their 5G one (rebranded Nokia Fastmile). Man, they killed the features on it with their custom firmware... The settings are basically SSID/password and wifi on/off. No pass through, DMZ, DHCP settings, firewall, parental controls, VPN, etc etc. Hoping they come out with update firmware with more capability or we learn how to "root" the gateway. Wiring a house to connect two AP's? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:51 PM PST Hello all, Looking for opinions, advice, and ideas on best ways to wire a house with CAT5e or CAT6 so I can hardwire a Ubiquiti Dream Machine with a second (and possibly later on a third) Ubiqiti AP? The house is three stories (finished basement, first floor and second floor) Preferably the dream machine will be in the back of the house to cover the backyard and pool area / patio as well. The AP will be on the front end of the house, preferably on the third level by the family room area where most internet usage will be. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:49 PM PST Need a wifi access point for my home 1500sq feet, I was looking at unifi 6 lite because I have a couple wifi 6 devices, what about ac1900 is anything about that better than 6 lite other than it doesn't have wifi 6? [link] [comments] |
Archer C6 can't access WiFi from phone but other devices can. Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:47 PM PST My network work perfectly with ethernet however I have problem with WiFi. First I had a hidden SSID but a public guest network. In this configuration only my laptop could access the hidden WiFi and the other devices only the guest network. Then I tried disable the guest network and making the regular public with no password and now I can connect with my TV but not the phone (but still to the guest network) I have tried rebooting the router. Any ideas or thoughts is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:44 PM PST So a few years back saw a bunch of videos and CEs promises of a fantastic new way to do wiFi via visit le and (invisible) light https://youtu.be/wqH9KX9o0vg But haven't heard anything recently...is this a classic vaporware idea? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:40 PM PST I'm looking to transfer files between a Mac and a pc via Ethernet, both systems have 1 Ethernet port. They also have Ethernet to actually get Internet. Is there a way to use one switch to meet these needs? Or do I need a switch for each computer? Or a better way to achieve this? The Mac does have WiFi but I prefer hardwired. The pc doesn't have WiFi. [link] [comments] |
Which poe injector for unifi 6 lite ap? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:01 PM PST I dont know too much about this stuff, i have a frontier gigabit and their router which i think is non poe? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 06:10 AM PST Hi, I have a setup where my ISP provided router is a genexis drg700, and connected to that I have a ubiquiti unifi ap-ac lite for wifi. The wifi in the drg700 has been diabled. I recently got a PC which I want to connect via LAN, but when I connect the PC to the router, the wifi loses connection to the internet. I think there might be some IP conflicts or similar, but I do not know how to access the configuration of the Ubiquti AP. I can only find the AP using the app on the phone, but the settings are very limited. The PC is only connected via LAN. An alternative could be to provide the PC with a static IP, but im not sure what the values should be. Edit: Found the specs of the router supplied by the ISP. Apparently my router can only handle one device via cable, even though the router have 4 ports... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jan 2021 02:20 PM PST Currently have a TP-Link AC1750 and Arris sb6190 setup and I'm consistently running in to connectivity issues. My 2.4ghz network will occasionally "drop" and overall signal strength seems spotty. I have issues keeping a connection in Zoom calls both on the floor above and even 20 feet from the router. Both with the 2.4 and 5ghz networks. Any recommendations on a decent home setup? Really just to suit a work-from-home scenario with two people and the occassional streaming. [link] [comments] |
Can't log in to Arris router/modem with 192.168.0(or 1).1 Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:49 PM PST Firefox just says connection timed out though it worked fine about a week ago with no abnormal changes that I can remember. Unplugging and replugging it in didn't work, so should I try resetting? [link] [comments] |
Archer C7 vs C80 - which one for me? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:19 PM PST I bought an Archer C7 very recently without noticing the new C80 that's available. I'm still in the return window. I'm relatively satisfied with the C7 but our apartment is quite big with full brick walls and an elevator shaft in the middle, causing a lackluster signal in certain farthest away points. I'd like to have coverage everywhere. Due to constraints, the router is at one end of the apartment, while the other is roughly 20-25 meters away. Which of these two routers provide better coverage, speed and stability over both 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz with 5Ghz being the preferred band. I won't tinker with other firmware (OpenWRT etc.), I just want the best performance out of the box. We have 2-3 devices non-5Ghz compatible. [link] [comments] |
Having trouble with home wifi - trying to figure out if it’s a router problem or a device problem Posted: 24 Jan 2021 01:29 PM PST I should preface this by saying that I'm not tech-savvy at all, but I really need help. We live in a two-storey house. Our router is in the lower south-east corner of our house, while our living room is upstairs on the northern side of our house. Unfortunately we're not able to move the router. The router is a Netgear Nighthawk - I'm not sure the exact model - and it's about 5.5 years old. Over the last six months or so, my husband and I have noticed that we're increasingly having trouble getting wifi signal on our iPhones (both bought within the past 18 months), and we often have to move quite close to the router to get signal. However other things on the network, such as our internet TV and an iPad bought last year, don't seem to have any issues. Is this more likely to be an issue with our router coming to the end of its lifespan, interference (although we didn't have this problem when we first moved in) or something else? [link] [comments] |
UDM has worse range than router it replaced, settings to try before returning? Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:14 PM PST I just got my Ubiquiti Dream Machine set up earlier this week. I got it to replace an older router that does a decent job covering the house, but doesn't reach out into the front or back yard far enough. Getting the UDM was going to make it easier to add APs to reach more of the yard. Unfortunately, the UDM itself has worse range than the mid range router it's replacing. I'm pretty disappointed with that, as it means I'll likely need more APs than originally expected, and it's not going to be easy to run the required CAT6 in the house. If I have to do all that anyway, I might as well go the TP link AP route. Are there any settings that I should try before sending it back? I have the 5GHz band set to max power. The next thing I had in mind to see if it helps is to split the 5GHz and 2.4GHz to different SSIDs (they're combined by default). Not sure if that would help at all, but the last router had them separated. [link] [comments] |
