    one drive is the worst

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 06:08 PM PST

spent a horrendous amount of time trying to un-sync and put my files back onto my desktop at a slow download speed, all because one drive decided to auto start after set it to DO NOT SYNC AND BACKUP, and after i checked DONT AUTORUN ON STARTUP and somehow both were checked back ot on when i powered my computer back on today.

Absolute trash, im just ranting because as i type this my files are still trying to get back to my desktop, as if that's not where wanted them in the first place, as i am a computer user and have bought ssd's and flash drives for local space like every other normal person with a computer.

    Start Menu Not Opening

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:56 PM PST

So earlier today my start menu stopped working and I'm not sure why. When I click on the windows symbol or the search bar nothing opens or happens, and I also can't get the settings app to launch from the task bar without getting a file system error. I've tried restarting file explorer completely, running a disk check, SFC scan, and DISM command and nothing has happened. Does anyone have a fix for this? It's making Windows REALLY hard to use :/

    Edit: I'm on Windows 10 version 10.0.18363 Build 18363

Laptop suddenly slow for no reason?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:52 PM PST

Reposting here because no one in r/techsupport responded and it's getting worse. I'm using Windows 10 20H2 (updated 2 days ago).

I have a Dell XPS 15 9750 that's suddenly lagging after years of almost never doing so. Each pause lasts about 1-15 seconds and mostly happens when I'm switching tabs or windows but it's still annoying and I'd like it to stop.

At first I thought it might be related to Antimalware Service Executable consistently using anywhere between 100-250 MB/s (I have 32GB) of my memory so I did a full scan with Windows Defender and it brought up a trojan (Win32/Occamy.C) in a .exe file I'd downloaded a day or two before the issue started. I'm fairly sure I never clicked it and Google results said it's usually a false alarm but I removed just to be sure. That didn't work, but nothing showed up on subsequent scans with both Defender and Malwarebytes so I decided to look into other things.

I've checked my RAM usage, CPU usage, GPU usage, disk usage, CPU temperature (w/ ThrottleStop), and GPU temperature (w/ GPU Temp), done a clean boot, turned off Windows Defender (which didn't end the Antimalware Service Executable for some reason), scanned my computer with rkiller, done a system restore (yes I checked for the virus again afterwards), ran chkdsk (this sped it up a bit the first time but eventually it slowed down again and a second attempt didn't do anything), and deleted various files and programs I thought were suspicious or may conflict with something. Everything is fine. Using Safe Mode was faster I think, but there was no internet so I didn't try it out for long.

When I originally posted this I ran Adobe Premiere, Adobe Audition, Malwarebytes, GPU Temp, ThrottleStop, Resource Monitor, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2 (which stutters for a few minutes about once an hour but otherwise runs smoothly), Resource Monitor, Discord, Task Manager, Firefox with 12 tabs (incl. 2 Reddit, 1 Twitter, and 1 Tumblr) and 3 extensions (uBlock Origin, Google Hangouts, and Dark Reader), and Google Chrome on Reddit while plugged in and performance was fine.

    • Storage: 577GB out of 93GB
    • CPU usage: 13%
    • Maximum frequency (CPU): 35%
    • RAM usage: 37-47% (closed everything before checking sorry)
    • GPU usage: 83%
    • CPU temp: 66C - 70C
    • GPU temp: 54C
    • Disk usage: 17%
    • Network usage: 0%

Closing everything except this tab, GPU Temp, ThrottleStop, Resource Monitor, and Task Manager:

    • CPU usage: 1%
    • Maximum frequency (CPU): 127%
    • RAM usage: 22%
    • GPU usage: 83%
    • CPU temp: 40- 44C (I was able to get it down to 31C idle earlier)
    • GPU temp: 37C
    • Disk usage: 1%
    • Network usage: 0%

According to Google all of this is fine/good. I recently replaced my battery and cleaned out/replaced one of my fans to fix a serious overheating problem I left for way too long so I've considered it might be the thermal paste, but temperatures seem totally normal since. Please help.

[Help] Poor Audio after latest Windows 10 update

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 11:44 AM PST

I have two computers with the same issue at the same time:

    • Ryz 3100 + B450M (AsRock)
    • Ryz 5600X + B550M (MSI)

Both are on the latest build Win10-2004

They both now have the same light audio tearing and snap/crackle/pop interference through all audio types (Gaming, YouTube, Playbacks) no matter what speakers I swap or whether I use the front or rear jacks.

I've gone to the mobo sites to make sure the latest audio drivers are installed (yes).

I've wiped the OS on the R3100 and tried a fresh install but it still has the same issue.

Other devices in the house (Smart TV and Tablets) have good audio.

Anyone else have this ? or found a fix for it ?

how to make wifi private on windows on a surface pro laptop

not sure which windows but it's the current windows ten I think. My wifi would say " no Internet: secured." I clearly have wifi bc all my other devices are connected.

apparently I have to make it private. it's no giving me option to make it discoverable. I do everything manually, type in codes to run the network. I re type in the wifi password. Constantly restarting it , it doesn't do anything different.

I don't know what to do now.

Revolutionary new Cortana search bar - Only from Microsoft

are you fucking kidding me? my search bar won't display anything except shitty bing results, telling me to use the search bar. please, if anyone has any idea how to make it fucking stop, i would be EXTREMELY grateful if you could point me in the right direction.

edit: i managed to fix it on my own, i noticed in windows reliability monitor that the "search and contana application" had stopped working repeatedly after a windows update, so i located the specific update and uninstalled it, now everything is back to normal. the update was for windows defender antivirus.

I can’t download anything to my ssd or any hard drive I own

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 12:53 PM PST

I can't download anything to my ssd. Anytime I download something, my computer completely freezes, it does not go to blue screen, it does not restart unless I manually do it, and it'll stay like that until i reboot my computer.

I am running Windows 10 on a MacBook Pro with a Touch Bar and when Windows doesn't crash, pressing the function key will change the buttons on the Touch Bar to Function keys. But when I try to download, and my computer freezes, then I try pressing the function keys, the buttons don't go to the Fn keys. My computer becomes unresponsive.

I have tried formatting my ssd but it still doesn't seem to work. I have also tried to run a virus scanner but nothing shows up broken. Idk what's going on. Help?

This is also happening to every drive I own. I don't want to reset my whole computer cause it was such a hassle getting my eGPU to work.

How do I create a ram disk?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 12:38 PM PST

Basically I'll be generating random files and running test, deleting them, generate more, run etc.

They'll probably live on the disk for <5minutes. I don't want to write the data onto a real disk so I'd like to use a ram disk. I know how to create one on linux but no idea what I'm doing on windows

    Windows Freezing at Circle Icon

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 09:37 AM PST

I recently transported my computer back to school. When I plugged everything back in I got past the POST to a black screen and infinite circle loop. I tried system restore, repair, and reset. All three failed to boot the computer. I then tried each ram stick, taking out GPU and unplugging all USBs. I ended up deciding to do a fresh install of windows. After install, it now freezes right after my motherboard post screen. I have tried messing with hardware as well as a system reset. When I attempt to reset windows completely through the windows troubleshooter, it says windows was unable to reset, no changes were made. I also do not have access to the command prompt since I reinstalled windows and was never able to set up user profiles. It asks for a password for defaultaccount0. Could this be my SSD? Thank you for any help, this has been a major headache and any help is massively appreciated.
