Is it normal for an ISP to deny access to your router?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 08:13 AM PST

    Hi,

Yesterday I had FTTP broadband installed at my home. We hadn't been able to get decent broadband here at all as Openreach seemingly abandoned their plans to expand the capacity (half the street could get it and half of us couldn't). Anyway I signed up to Grainconnect in the UK and am all set up.

I noticed though the connection speed seemed a bit unstable, one minute I'm getting up to 700Mbps over ethernet and around 250Mbps over WiFi (I'm paying for a 500Mbps package) the next I'm getting around 300Mbps over ethernet and at times my WiFi speed is dropping by a large amount and only gets between 50-150Mbps.

I have my Xbox One X connected via ethernet and I've noticed my NAT type at some point went from being Open to 'Double NAT detected'. My first port of call with the issues was to switch WiFi channels etc to fix wireless speeds and to do some port forwarding to sort the NAT issues. I noticed on the router they've hooked up to the modem didn't have any login credentials on there, ok I'll just look up the model and find the default, except it didn't work.

I've ended up talking to various people from the ISP and basically they've set their own username and password and won't allow me to access the router 'in order to keep the network safe for other users' but they could port forward my Xbox for me so that it opened up the NAT and that they will also fix the speeds. Well the speeds are still all over the place and my Xbox still has double NAT over ethernet but open over WiFi, so I emailed back and said can you just give me the login credentials so I can sort it out and the tech support guy literally just emailed me back and said 'double NAT will be fine when using ethernet'. I mean I'm not that savvy with networking but the Xbox clearly shows its an issue by directing you to their support pages in order to learn ways of fixing it.

I've never known an ISP in the UK to restrict access to the router's settings etc, it just seems bizarre to me, I know some providers force you to use their hardware but it's never been an issue modifying settings, half of them tell you to do that if there's any issue anyway. I thought about just getting a new router of my own but then realised that I wouldn't be able to access any of the details in order to get it set up and connected. Do I have any argument here or am I stuck? Thanks.

    Edit: spelling

Grouping network hardware together and adding WiFi AP

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:57 PM PST

    TL;DR

Is the UAP-pro/light that much better than other stand alone access points. Specifically against the Netgear AC1300 AP

PoE powered 10/100/1000 switches, proper terminology to look for and where to find if they even exist.

    The post:

After going back and forth on how to implement home network improvements (fixes), I have a sort of next stage finalization. But it involves moving the wifi router to a point where parts of the house will be out of useful range.

Fix is to add in an access point in a central location of the house and turn off broadcasting from the router. I am looking at the netgear AC1300 primarily because I have a best buy gift card to use.

Is the UAP-pro/lite that much better than other stand alone access points? I only have 3 maybe 4 wireless devices. I would be surprised if all accessed at the same time. Everything else is/would be wired.

As for another issue, hardwiring. I already ran a cat6 line to 2 points on the main floor, one on the second floor, and one to where the access point would be going. Instead of running more cat6 to the same location 3 times over, I would prefer to find a PoE powered switch for those points. What terminology should I be looking for/using in the search bar? I keep finding PoE switches that provide power, not use it for switching.

I think it would be easier in my situation to get an active PoE switch for the network center and use the existing cat6 runs to power the auxiliary switches. The alternative being to either run 4 more lines (tight spacing) or add a wall powered switch at the points. I would rather go the PoE powred switch route for one less plugged in item.

Thanks for any help on this.

Home office emergency and Comcast can’t help because I have COVID

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 06:00 PM PST

I am an attorney and have a ton of work to finish this weekend. My whole system is cloud based so I need my home internet. Today, tv and internet went out. I reset the modem. No luck. The "online" light was off and the US/DS light is blinking. Called Comcast but they can't come to my house because of Covid.

While trying to troubleshoot, I noticed that the power light on the EVO1-9-u/u amplifier was red. I unplugged it and plugged it back in. When it came back on, it was green but there was a loud buzzing sound. I tried to use a non powered splitter and take only the input line from the amp and the output line for my modem but no luck. I also tried to take the input line and plug it directly into my modem. No luck.

Does anyone have any ideas? I am in dire need of internet right now.

Anyone have experience with Centurylink and their policies on using non-approved routers?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:40 PM PST

I was at my sister's place and she has Centurylink. The speed was actually very very close to what was advertised, 940mbps. Better than anything I've had in my life, I've never had speeds greater than 50mbps.

I also saw that the incoming connection was fiber and that the provided approved router, switch, WAP combo had an SFP+ connection, but it was not being utilized.

There was something mounted to the wall that took the incoming fiber directly, and turned it in to 4 RJ45 ethernet ports. (is this a fiber modem?) Then the router/switch/WAP (white thing pictured) connected to said box on the wall through ethernet.

    https://imgur.com/a/jjbXxsJ

This picture was taken while century link was setting up service, which is why the router/switch/WAP is not connected. This is the only picture I have.

You can see the thing mounted to the wall that takes the fiber. Sorry for the poor picture. I know what the router/switch/WAP (white thing pictured) is, it's a Greenwave C4000XG.

    https://imgur.com/a/T7bvQ2q

This is the only picture I could find of the C4000XG that shows it's SFP+ port. (Below the ethernet jacks) All the other pictures when googling it are of the C4000LG, which has a dsl port in place.

This got me interested as I'm building a new house soon and it's a perfect opportunity to pimp my home network.

I want to use my own router, switch, and WAP's. I asked century link about using a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X SFP.

I hate to be rude but they were pretty useless as my agent didn't appear to know the difference between a router and access point. They also didn't know what SFP is.

So I'm just hoping one of you network nerds can help an unexperienced, and home network interested person out.

Can I use an EdgeRouter X SFP with Centurylink, and would it be possible that they would terminate their fiber to SFP+ to go into my router?

And if not, and they use the (to me) unknown said black box, can I just connect the EdgeRouter X SFP to the internet with RJ45 ethernet from the black box?

Also, I think the black box is not a router because I tried to connect my laptop to it with ethernet and my laptop could not identify a network.

I would appreciate it so much if someone knew. I've always wanted a super fast internet connection but I'm just unsure.

    Thanks for reading!

    New Router, No Internet Access

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 07:48 PM PST

    Hey All,

I just purchased an Asus RT-AX82U Router and am having trouble setting it up. My previous was a Motorola SBG6580 (combination modem + router) which I switched to Bridge mode, connected the router to the modem but the WAN light on the new router stays red and in the router settings the internet status stays at 'DHCP Connection Failure' no matter what I do.

I've been with tech support with both Asus and my ISP (Xfinity), who have had me adjust IP settings, MAC settings, etc. but nothing gives. The ISP says it must be a compatibility issue between the modem and router, but Asus support says there is no compatibility issue with the router and the Motorola Surfboard, so I'm at a loss here.

I did name the new network with the new router the same as the old network with the Motorola, there's no way that causes some kind of issue, right? Any help would be immensely appreciated!

    Help with Shield/Grounded RJ45

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 06:41 PM PST

Trying to run a long ethernet cable through some pre-drilled holes to set up an AP. I (without much thought) purchased this shielded/grounded ethernet cable before checking out where I was going to run the cable. Turns out the RJ45 connector doesn't fit through the hole. So I decided to cut one end of the cable to run the cable through, and then installed this pass-through RJ45 connector using a 568B pinout on the end that I cut off. I will admit that I have not installed an RJ45 connector in about a decade so I'm not the best, and a bit confused as to what went wrong.

One end is grounded with a metal connector, and one end has the plastic pass through connector I purchased, is that causing an issue?

Should I cutoff the other end, and install the other RJ45 connector?

Could the shield be causing issues?

I cutoff some shield in order to straighten the cables and install the RJ45 connector. Is this even worth troubling myself over, or should I just go buy a normal Cat6 cable?

    Thoughs, suggestions?

Netgear Nighthawk R7000 slow Ethernet speed, fast wifi? How fix?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 06:19 AM PST

So the title pretty much says it all.

Over the 5g WiFi, I'm getting 200-350mbps download speed which is good, I'm paying for 400. However, on the 2.4ghz band I'm getting a slow 50-100mbps down.

Even more strange, and far more important, on Ethernet to my PC I'm only getting about 80mbps down.

I do not understand, why am I getting slow wired connections and how do I fix it? By my calculations I should be receiving very close to or not 400mbps. Is there a setting I need to switch? Thanks.

    MOCA question

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 06:12 PM PST

I have Verizon FiOS gigabit speed, and the Motorola MoCA adapters. https://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Adapter-Ethernet-2-Pack-MM1002/dp/B078HMDDVS/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=moca&qid=1611367799&sr=8-5

When using the MoCA adapters the speed is reduced from 900ish to 400ish, is there any way to fix this? I thought these adapters could handle gigabit speed.

I also tried testing the adapters with a short 3-foot coax cable connecting them, just to rule out that it was something with the coax in my wall, and even still I was getting speeds in the 400s.

Apartment Networking - Ethernet Switch connected to Ethernet Switch

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 06:11 PM PST

    Hi,

My apartment has various ethernet ports that I am wanting to use to hardwire various devices around the apartment.

This is the current setup + issue:

A ethernet switch is connected to my Nest wifi mesh system. The ethernet switch then has the various cat5e cables for each room connected to it. If I do a single ethernet plug in into the ethernet port in any of the rooms there is internet. However, I have another ethernet switch connected to one of the ethernet ports, as I have many devices in one of my rooms that I am trying to connect to. There is no internet for the devices plugged into the second ethernet switch.

I am aware of the daisy chaining concept and thought this would work properly. Can someone assist in what I may be doing wrong?

    Thanks in advance.

options for home office / School with many devices

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 05:40 PM PST

I need to replace and upgrade my home network. We have 1gig internet and a Arris Surfboard, and our house is wired with cat5e and has 16 terminations. I'm thinking about TP Link Omeda or Ubiquiti.

Option #1 TP Link Jetstream-TL-SG2428P SafeStream (is it necessary?) AP devices but wait til wifi 6 is available

Option #2 UniFi Dream Machine Pro UniFi Switch PoE 16 Go with the current wifi 6 AP devices

Any thoughts or device suggestions. Also both companies offer many different AP devices, is there any way to tell the range / quality?

    Sub $100 Home Router Recommendation

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 01:41 PM PST

I know how most of this sub feels about home routers, but I really have a simple network and after looking around it seems that separate devices without breaking the bank won't be possible. What I want: - keep it in below $100 - Gbit LAN and WAN ports because I hav symmetric 300Mbit/s (seriously can't understand why there's 100+ Mbit/s .11n routers that have 10/100Mbit ethernet) - Solid 2.4 GHz speeds (most of my devices are .11n 2.4 GHz only and in my place can only see another AP in that band) - .11ac (I happen to have a couple of devices)

    So far my options are: - Motorola MR2600 - Linksys EA7250 - Tenda AC23 - Netgear Nighthawk R6700

If you have better recommendations, own any of those, or can help in any way it's greatly appreciated!

Home Network Upgrade from Consumer Devices

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 10:44 AM PST

First, thank you to everyone that answers all of these basic laymen networking questions. While I still know next to nothing about advanced networking, I've learned a great deal! Unfortunately, the more you know the more you realize how little actually understand.

I've read that IDS and other security measures aren't necessary on a basic home network like mine. Is that correct? Also, I would like to setup a VPN to access my home network when travelling – I'd be the only user. Finally, I'd like to isolate my IoT devices with a VLAN.

    Here is my current setup:

Home: 3 floors including the basement. ~2500 sq ft. Comcast 1Gb/35 service

First floor (entertainment center): Comcast coax > Modem (Arris SB200) > Wifi Router (Netgear R6700) > GoCoax MOCA adapter/NVIDIA Shield/Samsung TV>Phillips Hue Hub

Second floor (Office): GoCoax MOCA adapter > Netgear Switch > PC/Printer/Home Security Device

I would like to move the networking equipment to the basement and end up with the following configuration:

Basement: Modem (Arris SB200) > Router > Switch > GoCoax MOCA /Phillips Hue Hub

First floor (entertainment center): GoCoax MOCA > switch > NVIDIA Shield/Samsung TV/Wireless AP

Second floor (Office): GoCoax MOCA adapter > Netgear Switch > PC/Printer/Home Security Device/Additional AP (if needed)

I'll likely be adding a small server to the basement running Home Assistant, Plex, and a NAS or I may just purchase a NAS capable of running those programs.

I've been looking at Unifi devices since this seems to be a popular choice when upgrading from consumer equipment. I'm considering the following items:

    USG

3 Unifi Flex Mini Switches (one for each floor)

Wireless AP (I'll probably go with an Unfi product but the R6700 seems to have great speed and coverage throughout my house (300/400 Mbs))

Unifi controller in a VM on my PC/

Should I be considering alternate products like the Edgerouter X or a PFSense box?

    Help with Packet Loss/Lag w/Gaming & Streaming

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 10:44 AM PST

I am trying to identify the culprit of my lag issues while playing COD Warzone and streaming video. I am trying to determine whether the issue is on my network, my ISPs (Cox San Diego), or the game servers.

    Issues:

-Intermittent (but consistent) Slingshotting and rubberbanding while in game on PC & Xbox. Warzone is indicating packet loss or burst through in-game symbols.

    -Occasional full game server disconnect

-Intermittent (but consistent) buffering on youtube

-Modem intermittently shows millions of uncorrectable codeword errors on 9 out of 16 channels (on a 10 day operating period). A cox network engineer identified this to be a line issue, although all other tests performed appear OK.

    Remedies tried:

-Tried replacing with DOCSIS 3.1 modem and new router with no change.

-Set QOS for PC/XBOX MAC Addresses on current router

    -Set DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4

-Have had 4 line techs out to diagnose issue. 1st tech replaced old line hardware. No change. Other 3 techs have indicated that all lines are performing adequetely with no packet loss. Last tech mentioned that because of the pandemic, Cox has not been able to split nodes as quickly as possible, resulting in congestion with how many people are working from home and that THIS is the source of my lag/packet loss.

I recently started using Ping Plotter to try and ID the nodes causing the issues. I am not too savvy with this tool quite yet and was hoping for some insight on the attached screenshots.

1st graph is from my COD Warzone server (ID'd through a netstat -o command, connection through port 3074 on my PC).

    https://ibb.co/vhngLwH

    2nd graph is to google.com

    Thank you!

Netgear WAX204 WiFi 6 Access Point, working with Nighthawk R7000 router?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:32 PM PST

So while browsing for new access points to install in my office, I found out the new WiFi 6 router was being released by Netgear, that has a potential bandwidth of about 2000, though on the ax band. Given that I have the R7000 Nighthawk, that does not support WiFi 6 ax, does that mean that the access point shouldnt work? Or it should work fine and has. no relation to the routers capabilities?

Best position for PC antenna for optimal Bluetooth and Wi-Fi reception

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:16 PM PST

Hi there. Had to recently reinstall Windows so I've turned it into a physical project as well. My computer has an antenna with two wires coming out the back, one I presume for 2.4 ghz, and one for 5 ghz. My bright idea was to take the antenna and run it through the wall (already an access point to do so) that it would be in the same room as my router. then I remembered Bluetooth was a thing and realized that my Bluetooth probably is being broadcast or picked up by that antenna, dunno exactly how that would work.

So I guess my question to all you guys is where would the optimal placement in my bedroom would the antenna placement be? feels like a really dumb question but at the same time I can't find the answer online readily. I honestly can't tell if it's omni vs directional. The wall for the router is towards the left and my computer is towards the front of the room. I have 20 ft of cable to play with.
