I got DoS’d because a wanna be hacker got upset with me in a video game. Help.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 05:04 PM PST

I've been booted offline. Guy decided to flood my address with traffic. I called my ISP and all they tell me they can do is send me a new modem to change my IP address, and according to the internet, that probably won't work anyway.

My buddy told me to just leave my modem unplugged for a couple hours and give it another try, and if that doesn't work, try leaving it unplugged for an entire day to ensure I make the time of day when the IP address will reset on its own.

Currently using ATT and they are useless customer support agents who literally don't even know what a DoS is.

Edit: Thanks for the insight guys. I unplugged the modem for two hours and just watched a movie. Assuming they noticed or found a new target and got bored with me. Turns out my modem's firewall settings aren't useful whatsoever. Sadly 12mb/s is the absolute fastest I can get, and I'm paying the same price I used to for triple the speed. I just live in a shitty area with nice homes.

    Thank you guys so much.

    "Man Shed"

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 03:42 PM PST

Hey all ! Sorry, if my english isnt that good, its my second langage. I am preparing myself for spring.

I want to convert my shed 16x12 into a man "cave". I want to stream and play online video games so I will need a strong connection. Probleme is its too far from my house to have a good signal from my wifi. My options are to try a wifi booster or to instal an underground ethernet cable underground. I would prefer the later. I have 3 questions that i hope some of you have an answer to. (Please please)

1- Can i pass internet signal from a wifi rooter to another rooter ? In this case from my house rooter to my future shed rooter. 2- Will I loose alot a signal strengh with a ethernet cable of about 150feet ? 3- Since i live in canada and we have very cold winter. Will this affect the cable ?

    Network Advice

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 10:01 AM PST

    Hi,

Our family runs a really small business and we're planning to open a second location. We don't have a tech-savvy guy at our office and I'm the one my mom asking me to take care of the computer stuff. I only watch YouTube videos/read some articles so I have a very limited knowledge about it. With the incoming second location, I kinda hit the wall and I don't know what's the best and secured thing to do to operate both locations. They wanna access the resources of location 1 from location 2 and I don't know the proper way to do it.

Should I get a firewall for both locations? if i get a firewall, do i have to buy vpn service? (if yes, kindly recommend a secured one) Do I have to use bridge mode on our comcast gateway and add a router?

Really unsure what to do; help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What is the best router for stopping wifi interference in an apartment?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:07 PM PST

I live in an apartment, we have a general wifi for the building that charges you per hour/day (like what hotels normally have), and then pretty much everyone in the block has their own regular monthly contract wifi in their own apartment because it's much cheaper.

We pay monthly for 200mbps internet and we're getting serious lag, followed by disconnect, when a speed test returns the following: 195.9 mbps download, 18.9 mbps upload, 30ms latency. We're not trying to stream on lots of different devices.

Apparently this will likely be due to interference from all the other wifi connections available and we shoud switch away from using our ISP's provided router. But I have no idea what is is we're looking for. Having looked at some reviews online, I've seen very expensive top-end routers only providing a slight increase on speed test results, and the people reviewing are saying it obviously depends on walls in the way and other interference. But interference is my issue that I'm trying to solve, and most people are quoting speed tests when our speed test results come back fine.

Anyone know what it is I should be looking at? Or is a new router not the solution at all? Our ethernet point is in the hallway so it's not practical to not use wifi, and we rent so not like we can get more access points installed.

UniFi AC Pro vs Nest Router/Google WiFi

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 04:01 PM PST

Hoping for some advice on this. I currently have a setup I'm fairly happy with and am wondering if I'm inviting trouble.

I work in IT and my boss let me have three UniFi AC Pros and a USG. I'm wondering if this is better or worse or worth changing from my current setup which is Nest/Google WiFi with two Google WiFi points on an Ethernet backhaul. It's fairly good and while I have 1Gbps google fiber, I average 250mbps down in my house (averaged between several locations and devices in my house).

I am not unhappy with the setup so I'm wondering if I gain anything substantial by switching to the 3 UniFi AP+USG setup. Thanks for any advice.

Other stuff I have on my network if it helps:

    Plex server box

    Pihole

2 work from home vpn setups

32 devices according to Google WiFi dashboard

New router disconnects ethernet port/internet? Is that even possible? Modem issue?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:23 PM PST

    Hello!

I'm not very familiar with routers and modems so any help is appreciated. I recently moved into an apartment for the first time.

I replaced an old CISCO router from my parents with a relatively newer TPlink (Archer A7) one. It has much better speeds and coverage. After about 1 week of use, my internet will disconnect randomly for about 20-30mins before coming back on. I initially thought this was an issue with my ISP because when the disconnection happens, even ethernet doesn't work. I'd unplug the cable from the wall ethernet port from the router and plug it directly into my computer - no signal. After several days of this, I decided to plug my old router back to see if that makes a difference. I haven't had a single drop since. I'm not really sure if the modem is involved in this case. There is a modem in the apartment that was preinstalled by Comcast but I'm using another ISP that also offers service at this location. Do they usually have an agreement with Comcast to share their modem? If not, I'm not sure where their modem is located. I'm trying to avoid booking an appointment with a technician due to covid precautions.

Could the new router provide some negative feedback which drops the internet? Perhaps I need to change some settings on the router? I'm jumping the gun a little bit right now; I plan on plugging in the new router again for a week to see if it continues to happen. But, I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask now!

    Thank you.

Fios Gigabit over WiFi is lacking with Archer A9

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 11:36 AM PST

I recently had Fios Gigabit installed. As the technician was leaving out the door he casually mentioned that I won't be getting the gigabit speeds over WiFi, only hard lined. He said I'll probably get 300-400 mbps.

I have an Archer A9, and it's supposed to be able to handle 1300 Mbps on the 5GHz band. But he's right, over ethernet, my speeds are as advertised and over wifi, I get 300-350 down and 500 up.

I have many questions: Why? I get gigabit speeds over ethernet, shouldn't I also get gigabit speeds over wifi? How do I get the gigabit speeds over wifi? Is that even possible? Do I need a new modem? Are the speeds only available over the Fios Quantum Gateway?

Thanks for any and all help!

New home build - need advice on equipment

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 06:36 PM PST

Hello all! I'm an owner/builder working on a new ranch-style home with a full basement. While everything is still relatively open, I want to run Cat6 throughout and place WAPs to cover those devices that need WiFi, like my kids' tablets. My intent is to hardwire as much as possible and provide extra keystones for future connections in rooms/areas where we may add devices.

I plan to purchase a Comcast compatible cable modem since they are our only ISP choice, and I don't want to rent their box. I have seen Surfboards recommended elsewhere, but unsure which model is best for my situation.

I figured I would need at least a 16 port switch to support the wall plates I have planned, if not a 24 port to give myself the ability to expand and also incorporate the WAPs.

Our main floor is about 5000 sq ft, so I was thinking a minimum of two WAPs, if not three. Where I am struggling is if I should consider a smaller PoE switch for the WAPs, and a smaller unmanaged switch for the hardwires, or just go with a larger switch since I still need to run electrical anyhow, and wiring an outlet in the ceiling for the WAPs is pretty simple.

I have a clean slate to work with but I'm paralyzed over thinking this so I'd love to hear some educated opinions on what I should consider - thanks!

Accessing a device over a different router on a mesh network

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 06:05 PM PST

Hi, I have an hdmi video encoder connected over an ethernet cable directly to one of my asus RT-AX92U routers.

When I'm physically close to that router, I can access the video stream generated by the encoder.

When I'm physically close to a different router on my mesh network, I can no longer access it.

The router management page still sees the device and I can ping the device from within the router's management page but I can't ping directly from my laptop.

Why is being on a different router on my mesh affecting my ability to access the video stream?

EDIT: Issue seems to be isolated to one of my laptops. Everything works well on the others. Also works well over VPN

Modem help, internet dropping throughout day

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 03:51 PM PST

My internet keeps dropping for a couple seconds throughout the day. Upstream and downstream power levels and SNR look okay, but my 705 MHz downstream channel has 1 million uncorrectables over a few days (all other channels have 0-1 uncorrectables). What could cause this high number, and is this causing my drops?

Trying to upgrade my home network for my new house, need advice?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 11:01 AM PST

Hello everyone, so I just purchased my first home and its almost done being built. I have it prewired with Cat6A ethernet to all of the rooms. My goal is to have a multi-gigabit setup(2.5Gb or better) so that I can take full advantage of my internet provided by my current ISP(Comcast) who is giving me 1200/35 and so that once my promo ends I can take full advantage of FIOS gig internet.

Currently, at my apartment, I have been using the XB7 rental which was fine for the short term as it had 1 2.5gb port that I was able to use with my PC and provided decent enough WiFI coverage. However, it is lacking a ton of control like say being able to manually select the best channel for the wifi to broadcast on to avoid interference. So I was looking into purchasing my own modem the ARRIS Surfboard S33 and was going to pair it with the ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 but I ran into the problem of it only having one 2.5gig port. So I went down a rabbit hole and from my understanding its not possible to set up a network where you hook the modem up to an unmanaged switch than to the router.

So here is the setup I did come up with you guys tell me if this will cause issues, basically, I am gonna get the modem, then I will by a managed switch specifically looking at the Unifi Dream Machine pro which I will connect to the modem with a SFP+ 10gig adaptor to RJ45. Then I will also connect the dream machine pro with SFP+ to the Netgear 5 port Unmanaged switch. Then finally use that unmanaged switch to hook up my PC, my workstation, and my Nas. That will just leave the need for a AP so I can get Wifi which should be simple enough.

I just want to make sure what I am doing is correct before dropping the money and ensure that I won't be causing a double nat type issue. I also want to make sure what I am doing is not fully overkill and there isn't a simpler way to do this. Thanks so much for the help guys and I am open to any other better suggestions.

As far as a budget I was originally only planning to spend about 1K but I am flexible to spend 2K so long as it means not resisting this for a long time

My connection goes from 300mbps+ to less than 0.15mbps every night. So does my neighbors, and the ISP confirmed this via 24 hour monitoring on our neighborhood speeds/nodes. Where I live on Long Island, this ISP (Optimum) is my only option. Really wondering what is going on.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 03:12 PM PST

Essentially, I have tried everything including having 4 techs here, replaced my modem, splitters, router, and tried numerous machines wired to the modem and WiFi. Spoke with tech and they confirmed that from their end of the CMTS, it's not just me; my neighbors are also having this slow down. I finally saw a truck outside this evening (this has been going on for weeks). On my modem status page, right now, when it's working, I get virtually 0% packet loss and 38+ SNR etc. But when the net is terrible, I get packet loss so bad, I can't even maintain a connection. Channel 16-24 on my modem status drop out completely, and the best channel is like <26 SNR.

But...by 9-10am, it gradually bets better.

Hopefully this isn't a ridiculous question, but could this be caused by frost/temp changes? It does most certainly lag a few hours after day/night begins. I originally, of course, assumed high bandwidth, torrents, games, porn, whatever at night. But there's absolutely no way someone can use enough bandwidth from one device to take down an entire node. Maybe I'm underestimating people... LOL

Anyway any thoughts appreciated. I filled out FCC/BBB complaints last week. This issue has been on/off for months but as of last week it is now persist each night.

    Can you have ethernet anywhere?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 10:14 AM PST

I will be moving soon and in my house, have always had ethernet set up with powerline adapters for playing videogames.

How would I go about setting up ethernet in an apartment? Is it possible basically anywhere, even in older buildings with no wires/ports in the walls? Can I just have a router in the same room as my PC and directly connect it via ethernet cable?

    Thanks in advance!

Should I buy now or wait for wifi 6?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 04:50 PM PST

    Howdi!

I've just seen that the Asus RT-AC87U is pretty cheap ~145$ and I'm wondering wheter I should buy it as wifi 6 is coming soon.

My android devices and laptop do not support this new technology so I'd say it may be worth buying.

What do you say? Would you buy it If you were using your ISP router?

    Thank you.

    IP Address Help

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:39 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

I want to run a few python scripts continuously but not on my main machine so I bought a few Pi 4s, 4 to be exact. I got some POE Hats and a switch. I am going to 3D print a box that will house everything so I can move it from place to place because I travel for work and other reasons. Here is what I am looking to do.

I want to be able to plug all the Pi4s into the switch and give them static IPs like 10.10.10.10 for worker 1, 10.10.10.11 for worker 2, 10.10.10.12 for worker 3, etc. I want to be able to just jack into the "cluster" with my laptop, computer, iPad, or whatever and always have the IPs be the same no matter the network I'm using. Is this possible? I also still need them to be able to access the internet as some scripts need the internet.

Any and all help is much appreciated, thank you in advance.

    Port Forwarding for Open NAT

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:34 PM PST

When I plug my Xbox into the switch it is strict NAT and when on WiFi it is moderate NAT without port forwarding.

When I use the port forward rules found on the webpage of Xbox and Call of Duty my NAT goes from strict to moderate when plugged into the switch and moderate to open when on WiFi.

I know that wired and WiFi both have different MAC address and that will make WiFi and wired IP addresses different. I have made two port forward rules for the wired and WiFi IP addresses.

How can I make my NAT open instead of moderate when plugged into the switch?

Ubiquiti ER-4 router. Want to set up separate network for cameras with no access to outside internet

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:31 PM PST

Just wondering what the best way to do this would be.

I have my main network gear hooked up via the ER-4 SFP port to a edgerouter lite switch SFP port. All on the same subnet and all having outside access.

I then turned on port 1 on the router which will connect to a separate PoE switch which I bought and gave it a new subnet different from my other one.

I just don't know how to stop all outside traffic on this new subnet but still let it access my main network when I want to see live video footage of one of the cameras from my computer. I don't want the cameras sending ANY outside network data. Too many stories of cameras secretly sending data to China or to an external cloud without the owner knowing about it. Is it as simple as not providing DNS server entries in the config?

Edit: as an example, my main network is on the 192.168.5.XXX network. The camera network is on the 192.168.10.XXX network.

The best Mesh Wi-Fi router system?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:25 PM PST

Been asking a lot of questions and doing a ton of research about doing some real and actual improvement to my home Wi-Fi. It really seems like Wi-Fi 6 mesh router systems are the best way to go even though they are the most expensive. I pay for xfinity 1000 Mbps download and 40 Mbps upload, and only get around 200 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload a couple rooms away. The router and modem I've been using is the one they sent; the XB7 which claimed to be Wi-Fi 6 fast but the lack of admin privileges and QoS Ihas me ready for a mesh router system. What is the best possible mesh router setup I could get to cover roughly 2,100 square feet?

    Network switch issues

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:14 PM PST

So I have a tplink gigabit network switch (TL-SG105E) I haven't had any issues until recently. My setup currently has an Ethernet cable running into the first port of the switch directly from the modem. The second port is connected to my pc and the third to a standalone router. I can get internet via the router connected to port 3 but no internet on my pc. If I wore my pc directly from the modem and skip the switch entirely I have no issues. I can't figure it out and would like this router to be functional, but atm I can either have a functioning router or a pc with internet.

    Help please!
