Heads up to anyone running NETGEAR equipment managed with Insight: Insight Basic is going to discontinued in March

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:03 AM PST

If anyone bought in to the NETGEAR Insight ecosystem for their home or small business and was counting on the free basic tier of Insight to manage their access points and switches, I have some bad news.

Just updated to the Insight app version that was released yesterday and was greeted by this nice red warning. Clicked on it and got this message explaining that I now have to pay if I want to use Insight. Wonderful.

I would have thought that NETGEAR would have the courtesy to keep their existing users grandfathered in to the basic plan considering it was a selling point ("This level of support can accommodate many small businesses without any additional fees.") but apparently not.

    Best mobile hotspot?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 07:36 PM PST

I'm trying to find a mobile hotspot but there's so many options and plans. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I been watching and reading alot on these devices but they're all so different. I been reading that some of these mobile hotspots don't stream over 480p. Is that the same for all? I'd appreciate all the help.

Only coax and phone outlets in my rented townhome, any way to run a wired connection?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 01:08 PM PST

So I rent a townhome with a set up I'm not used too. My router and modem are upstairs as that's where the office space and my desktop are located. However, I use my PS4 downstairs in the living room for gaming and streaming purposes but I'm limited to wifi. Despite decent speeds, my connection is typically very spotty. There are no ethernet outlets in this unit, only coax and telephone.

Without running an incredibly long cable from the router to the living room, are there other options I'm not thinking of? I'm new to this so any help would be appreciated. I have Xfinity if that makes any difference. Cheers.

How much does it cost to have Ethernet wired to one room on a different floor in California?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:50 PM PST

Looking to have someone wire Ethernet from the first story to just only one bedroom in the second story. I would do it myself but it's an incredible awkward floor setup. I live in California so how much does it cost to hire someone to do this?

For gigabit, is it better to have a longer ADSL cable or Ethernet cable?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 04:19 PM PST

Hey so my area has just received support for FTTP at gigabit speeds and I'm wondering what setup will be optimal.

Previously, we have only had 40mbps down speed, and the setup I had was a 20m Cat5 ADSL RJ11-RJ11 cable running from the Master socket downstairs and it was ran upstairs into the router located in my study, then I had a Ethernet into my Desktop. The speeds I achieved with this setup were the advertised 40mbps.

Would this setup be okay to use also with gigabit (of course I would change the ADSL cable to Cat5e), or would it be better to have a short ADSL cable from the master to the router and then a 20m Ethernet cable going up to my study?

Any help is appreciated, I have finding a lot of conflicting information online.

Wanting to upgrade my modem to docsis3.1

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 07:58 PM PST

Looking for advice to upgrade my modem for internet thru my provider. Been researching and leery after reading reviews on netgear and arris modems and faulty chips and such. Is it all hit or miss and all brands have duds that fail? Not opposed to getting a modem /router combo. But if modem part faults i am out the router and vice versa.

My isp only offers up to 1 gbps and i am probably only going up to 400 mbps for now. They told me it 400 mbps wont work until i got docsis3.1

I just changed the password to our router, and most of us got back online. My brother's computer can't, and my virtual machine can't. Are there defaults for maximum devices per router?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 07:27 PM PST

We've got an Arris Surfboard SBG8300. It's strange, because we were all connected to the network before I changed the password.

Recommendation for directional antenna for both 5ghz wifi and 4g LTE

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:59 PM PST

**REPOST because I titled it "omni-directional" last time and that's not what I meant. I got a phone call and posted in a hurry, whoops.

Hey folks,I'm getting ready to go cross country in my RV for 30 days. After that I'll be living in my RV full time but seasonally. I'm looking for the most minimal setup for getting some internet into the RV.

My PC has little SMA connectors for a little bluetooth/wifi antenna it came with. One of the things I'm looking to do is to replace this with an antenna I can easily mount on the top of the RV and point at wifi hotspots when I'm in a parking lot. I'll run the cable in this wifi scenario from the antenna into the PC directly.

I would also like this antenna to pick up verizon LTE when wifi isn't available. I'm looking at devices now ( MOFI4500-4GXeLTE and maybe Cisco C819G-4G>) and then a prepaid Verizon data plan. My thinking is I will run the antenna into one of these devices, point at a cell tower, and plug the device into the pc via Ethernet.

I don't mind tinkering, I'm looking for something on the cheap side. I'd rather avoid the rv all in-one solutions. I really am just looking for 4g lte modems and an antenna recommendation that will work with both wifi and Verizon 4gLTE.

Router with data usage by device

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 11:14 AM PST

    Hi all,

I was surprised to find my data usage went up from 50Gb a day to ~150-200 GB per day for last two days. I am going through all my devices and cleaning them up but I want to be better prepared. Can you please recommend a router which has data usage by device charted automatically in the router web ui? I just have a simple home setup with 1 pc with ethernet and the rest of devices are using the wireless. The home is pretty big so need a future proof wifi capability. My internet is with cox gigabit connection. Thank you!

Tasked with fixing our internet, 4 days of research in do I have the right idea?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:38 PM PST

We've got 4 people working from home, Zoom calls all day, wifi often drops

    Fiber optic, 500mbps

The modem and router (Zyxel, rented from ISP) are in the basement, the house has a phone jack that was converted to ethernet and is connected directly to the modem, I want to plug an access point into this jack since it is across the hall from the office, is this the right idea to fix our issue? Since this jack goes straight to the modem do I need a router instead? If I use a router will I just have two networks in the house on the same modem?

    Two Questions:

Will an access point fix our internet issues by splitting up traffic?

The router and the access point are in the same spot just up one floor, does this negate the benefits of having the Access Point?

How to wirelessly print when printer and pc are on a different modem/router

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:34 PM PST

    I have a router and a modem.

The modem contains both 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels. Although my printer connects to the wifi, it doesn't actually work(can't connect to the internet), since it's supposed to be connected to a 2.4GHz network.

The router was added because the printer didn't work with the modem. However, the PC(connected to the modem) doesn't detect the printer(connected to the router). I fixed this by bridging the router to the modem, but I lose the parental controls of the router when I bridge it.

Is there another way that my PC can connect to the printer, without bridging?

    mesh or standalone AP

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:31 PM PST

I have a Netgear wax610 and wac540 in a split level home . Both are connected to poe switches that eventually connect to Edgerouter 8 pro.

These two ap can mesh if needed. Do you guys think I should enable mesh or leave as stand alone Aps? On the wax610 I currently have disabled the 2.4 band and wac540 is running both bands. Any suggestions on how best to optimize is greatly appreciated.

Help choose sub $200 home router to replace failing router

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:26 PM PST

My current Netgear Nighthawk R7000 -AC1900 needs replacement. I've had it for about 5yrs but it's dropping connections and crashing and getting progressively worse.

I need to chose a router with very good WiFi range, AP support for future use and capable of supporting a decent amount of device connections for under $200.

Any decent Wifi 6 home router or home build options for busy wifi environments?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:22 PM PST

Currently I have a Mikrotik HAP AC which is possibly slowly failing. It covers a 800 sq ft apartment, but in Manhattan, so the wifi situation is beyond messy (27 SSIDs from where I am sitting).

I now have a surprising number of wifi 6 clients (2 phones, 2 laptops, and a desktop)l so unlike some of the prior threads there would probably be a benefit. Nothing too taxing usage wise more than 4k HDR video.

I know a lot of people on here have complained about consumer wifi 6 routers, but it also seems going the pfsense route would be tricky because of driver support. Is there anything out there that can reasonably work in a horrible wifi environment?

Looking for some help with MoCA and Xfinity

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 05:55 PM PST

Alright so to begin, we upgraded to 1Gbps plan with Xfinity late last year. Before that I had been having issues with my WiFi going in and out. Had multiple technicians come out and they had no idea what was going on or what to do - eventually I realized my room is a dead zone. It's where signal comes to die out. So I bought a WiFi adapter hoping it would cure the issue, nope it just made me realize that Xfinity is useless and refuses to help me out, last technician said if I called them out here again they'd charge me $70 (even though technically they are supposed to be coming out to help me with these issues free of charge per the contract).

So here's my issue - I do not own the home, I reside in a room at the end of the L-shaped hallway. I decided to get MoCA after learning my Modem is MoCA capable meaning I don't need an adapter for it. I bought one BUT it doesn't work in my room and ONLY works when connected to the Coax cable that goes to the Modem in the living room (which is about 60ft from my room) and there's no possible way I can connect a cable or Ethernet cable from the modem in the living room to my room because we have kids that wander around as well as dogs that love chewing things.

I contacted my ISP, they were clueless and said they'd send a technician, I told them to hold off. I contacted Amazon support (because the company I purchased the MoCA adapter from has no customer service #) and they recommended either I return it or contact the company via Amazon messaging. So I contacted them, they asked me to go hook it up to the modem, I did and the light for MoCA came on for the first time! However, they're now recommending I buy a splitter to put in the living room so I can connect the adapter to the modem in there and have it connect to my PC somehow. There seems to be some kind of miscommunication between us because they don't seem to quite understand most of what I'm saying. I'm at an impasse right now, I feel like one of the solutions would be to contact my ISP and just have a technician come out next week (but I'd have to remind them that I won't be paying for it because it states I am not to pay for it with our plan), the other is to just buy another MoCA adapter to see if that works but I won't be able to purchase another until I get paid and I've no idea when that'll be.

    Need help for wifi

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 01:51 PM PST

I live in a 5 house private estate and when the 5 houses were built there were only 2 phone lines made , so they were split up between the houses. We are trying to get better wifi but we cannot find a way, our houses ate surrounded by trees aswell so we cannot get " line of sight wifi " . I have a family of 7 and my 5 kids are all still in school and with lockdown and the virus we all need the wifi for online classes but none of us have any luck with this because of our poorly internet. If anyone has an idea of how this problem could be solved, please comment/reply to this message.

Moca Networking Questions For Rental Home

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 05:35 PM PST

I'm going to be moving soon, and with working remotely, and the number of connected devices I own, I'm considering setting up a Moca network. I've considered this because the house that I'll be renting doesn't have ethernet jacks, but does have coaxial jacks in most of the rooms. Since the rental would be less than a year, and due to the layout of the house, running ethernet along the baseboards doesn't appear to be a solution.

In my current networking situation, the apartment has one incoming coaxial jack. After that there is a splitter, with one of the outputs going to an Xfinity cable box, and the other to our own cable modem, an ARRIS SURFboard SB6190. The modem is then connected to a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X, which in turn is connected to an Ubiquiti Unifi Ap-AC Lite to provide wifi connectivity, and a Trendnet unmanaged switch for wired connectivity for other devices in the same room. That switch is also connected to another Trendnet switch in another room, via a 15 to 20 foot ethernet cable, in order for that room's devices to have wired internet access also.

From my understanding the changes to my current setup would be as follows:

    1) I would need a PoE Moca filter after the coaxial enters the house, but before the first splitter feeding the coaxial to each of the rooms;

    2) In the room that would house the cable modem, the connections would run: coaxial jack > coaxial cable > 3 output splitter with one output to the cable box, and another output to the cable modem > cable modem to EdgeRouter > one output to a switch, another to the WiFi AP, and the last to a Moca adapter. The Moca adapter would then output back to the last available jack on the splitter via coaxial cable;

    3) Any room that I wanted to connect to the Moca network would then be: coax jack > another Moca adapter > ethernet switch > connected devices.

    My questions therefore are:

    1) Is my above understanding of the network layout accurate? If not, what changes need to be made or are suggested?

    2) For the Moca adapter, I've seen both Gocoax and Motorola suggested. They both appear to be around the same price point per adapter on Amazon. What is the community's recommended preference, or are they both pretty much equal? I see the sidebar mentions Actiontec, but that recommendation appears six years old.

    3) Is there a recommended or best PoE filter? What about splitter?

    4) Is there an easy way to determine where in the house the original coaxial cable enters, and where the splitter(s) are? Are there any pitfalls or issues I should be wary of with trying to connect the PoE filter? If this happens to be in a spot that's inaccessible, say inside a wall, am I just SOL and won't be able to setup the Moca network?

    5) I've seen that the particular model of ARRIS Surfboard that I own has received negative reviews for packet loss and lag since my purchase several years ago. As far as I'm aware, I haven't experienced these issues. Should I keep using it, or is it more likely there are issues, and I'm just not noticing?

    6) I'll need to switch my internet provider from Xfinity to Spectrum. I'm assuming aside from providing them the MAC address of my cable modem, I'm good to go once I've ordered service, and that as long as the PoE filter is installed I shouldn't have any issues with them?

My apologies for how long winded this is, but I'm hoping that with any information provided I can iron out and plan most of this so the only major issue would be installing and setting everything up. If there's anything else I'm overlooking, let me know too.

Question pertaining to PoE CCTV Networking

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 04:17 PM PST

I have 5 PoE cameras whose cat 5e cables all come to a mechanical room in the basement. Is it possible, through the use of a certain switch, to get the feeds from all 5 cameras up to an NVR upstairs into the kitchen over one cat 5e in the wall? Would all functions of the NVR work from that remote location?

New to networking and PoE systems. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

    pfSense GRE Tunnel

I have 1 Static IP at home and would like more, my chosen method is creating a GRE tunnel with a Hetzner VPS running pfSense also.

Effectively, I want my Hetzner VPS IPs to point to my home pfSense and then have my pfSense home router route the traffic to my local servers, can someone assist me with the best course to go with this? I have tried multiple methods and still haven't managed to get it setup correctly.

    Home WiFi and data security

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 04:05 PM PST

I need to update our home Wifi and I'm concerned about our data Privacy. I was seriously looking at the TP-Link Mesh WiFi S4 when I started reading critiques of the company's data privacy policies. Apparently they collect user data including internet use and much more. Is this an issue with all Mesh Wifi systems? What about non-mesh routers that have an app based router management? Are they also collecting user data? What's a good wifi router to get if I wish to maintain data privacy?

Advice Needed for Wifi in Attached Studio

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 04:00 PM PST

Advice would be greatly appreciated for the following set-up: me and my partner live in a tiny 2-room attached studio that is completely separated from the main house by a relatively thick plaster wall. The main house is an old 1920's craftsman that's single-story and about 1200 square feet (excluding our studio, which is maybe 500 - 600 square feet). The modem/router are in the main house, about 20-25 feet from the studio. However, because of the plaster wall, we get a pretty poor wifi signal.

For background: the main house gets AT&T fiber with a rental modem. I hooked up a Netgear AC1750 router a few months ago in an attempt to improve our signal. It helped, but the wifi still isn't great.

My question is - what networking solution would work best for us? I'm not super network saavy, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Our only requirements/limitations are that we don't have any ethernet hookups at present, and installing through the wall isn't an option. Because of the landlords, we're not able to run an outdoor ethernet cable through the windows of the main house to our studio. We also don't have a cable hookup, so MoCA isn't an option either. I'm thinking a strong mesh network might be best for our situation?

    UniFi setup noob question

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 03:31 PM PST

Just got a new Arris modem, and some UniFi stuff (USG, switch, APs). Having trouble with step 1 - getting the controller to find the USG. I installed the controller on my MacBook and connected the MacBook to the LAN 1 port on the USG. From the MacBook I can get to the USG via web browser or ping/ssh at 192.168.1.1. The USG page at 192.168.1.1 says it has no internet connection which is weird because the modem's lights all look happy.

Wanted to try and get things configured through the UniFi controller software but it just says "no devices found" in the devices page.

Most of the guides seem to blow right past this like it should be super easy. Halp!

Edit: Borrowed a windows laptop and that is able to discover the devices ¯\(ツ)

Tenda AC9 strangling the network while downloading

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 03:23 PM PST

Hi, I bought this router a year ago to do a network inside my company's router LAN and at the beggining it worked well but after some months I found it didn't download at max speed, the speed fell from 60MB/s to 10MB/s and while I was downloading I couldn't even navigate with my browser. I tried to navigate while downloading through the main router and I can do it, so it seems is a problem from the Tenda.

I did a downgrade to the firmware and it worked some time but it did slow at some point again.
