5 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 157)

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 03:24 AM PST

Welcome back, fellow Android gamer, to this weekly summary of the 3 most interesting games I played this week :)

This episode includes one of the best casual puzzle games I have ever played, a challenge 2D action platformer, and a new solitaire card game from the developer of Card Thief and Card Crawl!

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 157 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

UnpuzzleX [Game Size: 56 MB] (free)

Genre: Puzzle / Logic / Jigsaw / Indie - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

UnpuzzleX is the third installment in a series of fun and relaxing logic puzzle games where we must undo a jigsaw puzzle by tapping the pieces that are not blocked by other pieces.

Throughout 250 levels, the game introduces no less than 17 unique puzzle pieces that each function in a unique way when tapped, making for a deep and engaging gameplay experience. There are also no tutorials since everything is learned by doing and the difficulty is nicely balanced. UnpuzzleX is a very casual experience too, with hints and options to skip levels we don't like.

Interestingly, since there are two different game modes, each of the 250 levels can be completed twice while providing different puzzle experiences – a smart way to get some extra hours of fun out of the same content. There is even a dark mode for playing in dimly lit environments, which is very rare to see in a game.

UnpuzzleX monetizes through occasional ads between levels. It feels like there are more ads than in the predecessors, but they can be completely removed through a $5.99 iAP that also unlocks all levels immediately and gives unlimited hints.

If you enjoy relaxing logic-based puzzle games, this is a must-play.

Unbroken Soul Lite [Game Size: 49 MB] (free)

    Genre: Action / Platformer / Indie / 2D - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Unbroken Soul Lite is a fun 2D retro pixel-art action platformer game where we fight and jump our way through hordes of enemies and challenges scattered across nine regions while trying to unravel a mysterious story.

Each region is split into smaller sections that we complete with our sword and bow, with a unique boss waiting at the end of every region. Before entering a new region, we can spend coins earned through gameplay at various NPCs to upgrade our equipment, abilities, and even buy potions that improve our strength until our next death.

The controls work decently well, with both joystick, d-pad, and Bluetooth controller options. My only gripe is that it is easy to miss-click while navigating the settings menu. The graphics aren't stunning, but the unforgiving level design and obstacles provide a fun and challenging experience rich in deaths. The game is relatively quickly completed, but there are thankfully multiple difficulty settings to pick from to make the journey take a bit longer.

Unbroken Soul Lite monetizes through occasional forced ads between levels, which can be removed through a $1.99 iAP. The non-Lite version of the game costs $2.99 and offers the same content, but without ads or additional iAPs.

Gnomitaire [Total Game Size: 120 MB] (free)

Genre: Card / Solitaire / Indie - Offline

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

Gnomitaire is a new simple but challenging solitaire card game from Card Crawl and Card Thief indie developer Arnold Rauers.

As with most great card games, the rules of Gnomitaire are simple and straightforward; with four cards on our hand at a time, we must distribute 16 randomly generated cards into four columns so that there is one heart, spade, club, and diamond type card in each column. The tricky part is that each card tells us which type of card(s) we can place on top of it. So to win, we must figure out the correct order in which to place the cards in each of the four rows.

There are no time-limits, yet the game quickly becomes incredibly challenging – especially in the Expert and Challenge game modes. The graphics are simple but unique, with a style that matches the developer's previous games. The only downside is that the gameplay does become repetitive rather quickly, although that is the case with any type of solitaire game.

Gnomitaire is a free game with no iAPs, and while the Play Store suggests there are ads, I haven't seen any myself. So if you're looking for a fun and unique solitaire card game, this is a must-try.

    Alternative BROWSER for Play Store?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 07:33 PM PST

We all know that Google Play store is hot garbage, filled with fakes, pay to win, shitty clones and other trash that's not worthy of anyone's attention. The reason it is what it is only because it's profitable to Google. You'd have to sift through dozens and hundreds of games to actually find anything decent. So my question is: are you aware of any alternative software to search and discover games on Play store? That would allow to hide certain genres, tags, smartly filter by rating, scan for fake paid for comments, and dozens of other consumer friendly features. I'm thinking of putting this on my project list, since I'm a web developer, but I figured I'd ask if there are any existing solutions on the market.

    Thanks!

Running swf (flash) files on Android? Is that still possible?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 05:20 PM PST

So basically I've been thinking about downloading some flash games and just running them directly from the phone offline with some kind of player app. However all apps I tried so far usually either don't work at all or the games aren't working properly. Did anyone else try something like this?

    non p2w multiplayer games

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 02:41 PM PST

I want some multiplayer games to play. I don't want any mmorpg but rpgs are fine. I play terraria, bombsquad, rusted warfare and codm right now. I prefer games that have no grinding but some grinding is ok I guess. I don't care if it's paid as long as it's not p2w. By multiplayer I mean it can be local only, online only or both. Thanks for reading.

Looking for a roguelike card game I played a while ago

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 08:41 AM PST

It was a free roguelike type game where you had to battle monsters and stuff, but I think the cards were the regular deck, i.e. heart, diamond, spade and cross. It might have been that the "battles" themselves consisted of something like solitaire, I'm not sure.

Does that ring a bell for anyone? Thanks :)

Geolocation game fan san over covid? Here's some ray of hope: the Forage.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:34 AM PST

I'm a HUGE geoloc game fan (used to play geocaching before they had a site, was one of the first to be level 40 in pogo, etc).

So recently I've been very sad because pogo is P2P at least now, Ingress prime just stalled, Orna's randomization is 'just too much' and not biome dependent, etc. I had a bit of fun with that that walking dead game but no one playing around me so... boring.

And then the bad news piled up. CATAN is turning out to be boring, unfinished, buggy and unloved by Niantic in the covid pandemic. We were all excited about October and now we're probably looking at July, if they even keep the project alive. And the witcher slayer? The same issue as Orna, although you can tell they have more bucks, but the POI DB isn't here, sending quests in unreachable places and forcing you to walk 1km north/west/south/east jut to press 'relocate'. There's no multiplayer angle, either, and the tech tree is finishable in a couple of months max. Strange and hints at 'prestiging' IMHO.

BUT ! This is a weird little game (think how 'a dark room' surprised you the first time, I don't want to ruin it), but 'The Forage' (currently in alpha) is really promising. No Bugs to catch, no balls to throw. A Minecraft light crafting system. Minigame. Deep lore. Original pixel art.

Currently, 1.0.0 is buggy as hell and i'd avoid it - but keep an eye on that one, I think it's going to be our 2021 sleeper geo location hit. It's a walking motivator, too, so it has that fitness angle that the other geogames have lost. It's very secretive about its algos and loot distro, so I think we can expect some really funs surprise visiting 'odd' places.

Anyways, enough rambling. I'm excited, but again the game is not finished and buggy in the beta branch. Give it 6 months but keep an eye on that gem in the rough.

What are some android games that have skills such as woodcutting/fishing/mining with level progression, like you would see in games such as Runescape and Curse of Aros?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 07:34 AM PST

Pretty much title. I really like games that have a variety of skills that can be trained up and leveled up that unlocks more content, but the only two examples I know of are Oldschool Runescape and Curse of Aros.

Do you guys stream your 'streamable' (4x say) games to your android tablet, and what's your experience so far.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:39 AM PST

Sick and tired of SLGs, IAPs, and MAU obsessed Chinese devs.

I want to stream my 4x to tablet, (Samsung tab 6), I own a stream controller , a keyboard , mouse and even a hub.

Problem: results so far have been POOR. Not so much stream speed (I get a very comfy 50mbps on ubiquity infrastructure) but in terms of overall experience. Games arent designed to be played with fingers so M+B are a must, and that takes space. Tried to play europea universalis streamed? Let me tell you, it's no fun.

Anyways, what's work best for you? What was your 'most fun' streamed experience on your table from you PC (or from whatever other service exist, I'm service neutral).

    Thank you!

Pure madness: I want to use my Samsung Tab S6 as a mirror screen (with controls enabled of my Huawei Mate 20x). Possible at all?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:20 AM PST

So - I play "Lost Crusade" which is not compatible with the Sammy tab s6 but could benefit from the big screen. So I thought - why not use my tablet as a 'screen' for my phone?

Question a) is that possible at all?

Question b) if not possible, how do you handle the lack of touch input from hdtvs when playing that kind of of game - is there a workaround of some sort?

    Thank you.

Angry Birds Journey has soft-launched in selected countries

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 11:14 PM PST

The latest entry from Angry Birds, into the mobile game market, has arrived on Android and iOS in the US, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, and Poland. Angry Birds has been through many different forms since its initial release as a slingshot game. It seems though, that Rovio now has decided to come full circle with Angry Birds Journey as they're finally going back to the slingshot style that we've come to know Angry Birds for.

The game's art style and design aesthetics should be familiar to any fans of the Angry Birds franchise as it's just a rebranding of Angry Birds Casual. Angry Birds Casual soft-launched just last year on iOS in the same regions and it did well for itself. The gameplay is much like the old Angry Birds style where players catapult the birds into structures to destroy them.

The birds are all here now with their redesigns, but players can also expect new characters to become acquainted with. The Birds all have abilities too that activate when they're fired and can create many new gameplay and puzzle opportunities. You can read more about the news here and try it out from the Play Store if you are a lucky resident from the selected countries!
