[USA] Less than $600, Windows, Small/Portable for basic work

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 07:40 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $600 or lower
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery doesn't matter since it'll mostly be used in my house. Priorities are size so it's easy to mvoe around the house or use in bed / on the couch.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Important.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No but it needs to be Windows since I log into stuff remotely.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
No, I already have a ~ $2K gaming PC in my bedroom, I want this to be able to easily work on stuff out of the bedroom (e.g., living room couch, bed, dining table, etc)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard and good touch pad are important.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm looking for an affordable (less than $600) Windows laptop that is easy to carry around my apartment to do work (e.g., sit in bed or on the couch) so ideally not heavy / too big. I already have a gaming PC (~ $2K) but sometimes I just want to work in the living room or something (PC is in my bedroom).

My day job (software dev) requires a Windows PC and I basically just remotely log into my work PC so most of my work happens on my work PC so this laptop doesn't need to be fancy.

    Other stuff I'm thinking about:

    1. Responsiveness for stuff like web browsing

    2. Touch pad / keyboard that is good (have had terrible touch pads before and I hate them)

    3. Portability so I can move from room to room easily

    4. Bonus points if it's easy to remotely log into my gaming pc from say the living room

    A replacement for my 2016 Lenovo Y700 17"

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 03:10 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.
      6,200₪, Israel (roughly 1900$)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Rather not.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Needs to be comfortable to use, mid-to-high performance, good battery life, built pretty studry.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not at all.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Prefer 17", can go for 15" too.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No video or photo editiong, mostly gaming on a reasonable level (not super ultra mega high end gaming, something that will let me stat relevant for the next 3-4 years).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Not any particular games (mostly single player RPGs), would prefer to be able to run games from the last 2 years on high-ish settings.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A big hard drive (at least 1 TB, can go for more).
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Looking for something that would last for 4-5 years, comfortable, doesn't sound like a chainsaw (at least most of the time) and has good battery life. I don't game a lot and I'm not into heavy multiplayer FPS games, but I want to be able to run modern video games for a while without worrying too much. I've purchased the Lenovo Y700 17" in 2016 and it still serves me extremely well, but it's starting to show it's age and I'm looking for a suitable replacement.

I understand that it's not the best time to buy laptop now but her laptop got accidentally damaged. We managed to get back some money from the insurance company so now we're on a hunt for something decent.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    4600PLN purchase in Poland

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

      1.Performance 2.battery life 3.build quality

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Moderately important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      14"-14,1"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light photo and video editing (Adobe CC), Casual Gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Payday2 (as good as possible), Witcher 3 30-45 fps, Less demanding modern games in a decent framerate

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Decent screen (not too dim, decent color accuracy for the photo editing), preferably Thunderbolt 3/4 over usbc, fingerprint scanner (it's not a must have but it's convenient), reliable build quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm leaning towards something with 11th gen i5 CPU and iris xe graphics. I know that this might cripple my gaming performance. But I'm kind of leaning towards a small lightweight laptop with egpu capability.

    2 in 1 Recommendations

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 03:07 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: c. €800, purchasing in Ireland
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Somewhat but preference for New
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? My priority would be a 2-in-1. I no longer want to be (never should have been) using my work laptop for personal use but do want the portability/convenience offered by a tablet.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Rather important, previously had a Lenovo Yoga c740 2-in-1 which while good for entertainment was very clunky to use as a tablet.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. PC Gaming is always a thought that pops into my head but by no means a prioirty, basically a nice little plus if I can run the average Steam game smoothly without sending the fans into overload but will not prioritise as it'll be the higher price bracket.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Will probably just get a Nintendo Switch at some point so not a priority lol
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen is important as well as reliable hinge quality. The Lenovo Yoga c740 had quite prominent issues with the hinges making it much less mobile than envisioned hence why I'm entertaining the idea of the detachable keyboard that you get with say a Surface Go etc
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm a young professional, personal laptop is primarily for my further education and to just watch Netflix etc while cooking / eating / chilling. I don't know much about laptops but would lean towards an AMD processor (Ryzen 7 would be nice but again likely out of my budget plus probably not that necessary) and 8GB RAM. I'm very much the person who probably needs a much simpler device but enjoys having the higher specs so would appreciate recommendations more bang for my buck. A side note to the Lenovo Yoga c740 aforementioned, bought it directly from Lenovo but battery issues followed by hinge issues led to an eventual return. Good customer support is favourable on that basis. I probably do regret not getting a Surface Go initially, I value the thoughts of this subreddit a lot so curious to hear your thoughts, thank you.

Best 'budget' large screen laptop for a student?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 02:20 AM PST

I am looking for a new laptop. I currently have a 14" Dell Latitude 5400 and it is perfect in many ways. The one thing that frustrates me though is that due to the fact all my learning is now online I could do with a larger screen. I am looking for an affordable large screen laptop (17" or 15.6") and I could spend up about £700 (I live in the UK). I only use Microsoft office, teams, zoom, web browser. I do not game or do any sort of photo editing or anything like that. I connect my laptop to a usb type c monitor so it is really important that the new laptop connects, displays and charges via the usb port via a single cable when connected to my monitor (Lenovo Q27h). I currently have an i5, 256gb ssd and 8gb ram which seems fine.

My 2017 MacBook Air recently broke and im in thinking about making the switch to PC's just for better accessibility to certain programs without having to buy additional extensions that I would need for a Mac. Im a college student that does light gaming (sims and Minecraft mostly) and obviously I would need a built in webcam and mic. My main concern with PC's is longevity, everytime my family has used a PC it would be riddled with virus's a couple years in and would have to be replaced (although to be fair the last time I owned a PC was about 7 years ago). I would just like a general opinion on if this is as big of an issue anymore and if it would be worth saving a little money for a PC or if I should just invest in a Mac for longevity sake.

Looking for a laptop for primarily casual use with some gaming/streaming mixed in

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 10:48 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      -Around $800 USD or so
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      -Not exactly
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
-Performance, build quality, battery life, form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
-Not at all. I don't really travel with my laptop so it'll pretty much always stay plugged in
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      -N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-Minecraft and maybe other games in the future, OBS for casual Twitch streaming, and drawing programs
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
-Mostly Minecraft and I'm not super picky on FPS as long as the game plays well
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-Backlit keyboard, at least two USB ports, good speakers (I watch a lot of streams and videos and use almost exclusively the laptop's built in speakers), a color accurate screen
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-My previous laptops were a Dell Inspiron 15 3000 and an ASUS TUF 15; all bought off Amazon. I currently own the latter but I plan on returning it because of the screen's color accuracy and I can't tolerate how the audio/speakers are. I'm not sure if I want another ASUS laptop because they apparently tend to not have an fn lock, which makes it annoying when adjusting the volume. However, I'm open to all options

A laptop for programing around 1000€

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 06:28 PM PST

Hello world, As this pandemic makes our job less and less office bound im trying to find a nice laptop so that I can try and travel while working. I have decides to invest up to 1000€ (100€ up or down is fine) into a laptop that can handle average programing tasks (i do FE development mostly). So far the best option that I found is the thinkpad T14 (in the us so id have to have some one bring it to me as I live in europe). It fits the price range (currently on discount) with 16gb of ram, a lower power consumption 400nit screen, 256gb of storage and the ryzen 7 amd cpu. What do you guys think? Is this the best value for money hardware that I can get?

[USA] Under $800 Laptop for All-Round Student Use

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:08 PM PST

    The Form

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Total budget is about $800, USD, and country of use / purchase will be USA. If we can score lower that's great, as I'd like to have enough to throw in an external hard drive to make up for a budget small SSD, etc.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Likely not, would prefer new. Important to have warranty (about 3 years) with mail-in service, and would also prefer to have ability for computer geek to work on it.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
This is going to be an all-round computer for a household with very limited access and knowledge of technology. Laptop is necessary for portability, as it must be "taken" to wi-fi locations. The ability to add a CD/DVD drive for access to older media is helpful (via USB). Would like it to have a built in CD/DVD drive but an attached drive is okay.
    • Build quality is important as is reliability. This will be the "main" (good) computer in the household, accessed by children in a learning environment (although old enough to follow rules). This computer will be transported to wi-fi locations via vehicle and likely in a backpack on campus, so bumps and dust are likely to happen with life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not a major issue, but may be factored in to a final decision.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Likely around 15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Am not sure on this; school just says, "We have Chromebooks, they are using Google Docs, we don't really teach computers here." Read: Even the school staff don't know computers well.

    • From experience we are looking for 16gb RAM, but if the computer comes with 8gb on a motherboard that is expandable, that's fine. Would prefer to have a motherboard that is expandable for RAM.

    • The laptop will be used to view 4K dash cam video, but the screen just needs to be 1080p. A 1080p screen should be enough to pick up license plates, etc. if necessary.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
4K dash cam video will be viewed; just looking for a 1080p monitor onboard the laptop and enough "guts" to view the 4K dash cam (recorded at 4K, viewed at 1080p) without it hanging and buffering constantly.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
We are looking for a screen that is likely 1080p, to avoid having to purchase an external monitor for a little while. We don't need a 4K monitor at this time; that can be expanded to later.

    • Motherboard with option to expand RAM, and likely going to put 16gb onboard. It's fine if I have to put it in, as long as it doesn't void a warranty.

    • Nice option would be to have 2 hard drive spaces.

    • Nice option would be to have NumPad (like 15.6" laptops are generally equipped with).

    • Optical drive would be fine as an attachment, but fine as an onboard as well.

    • We will be using the laptop for viewing of 4K dash cam video; we will likely be downloading the footage from a microSD card to an external hard drive.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Have been recommended a Lenovo E595 with 256 GB SSD, but the screen is subpar and we don't have a quote on a better screen yet.

    • Have also been recommended a Lenovo Legion 5 computer for a bit more, and it at least has an advertised 1080p screen (of some flavor, but folks warn it needs to be troubleshooted).

    • Open to AMD and Intel Processors.

    • Open to both onboard graphics and/or graphics card, just as long as they support the 4K video nicely.

    • Thinking of Windows 10 OS, probably Windows 10 Pro, but if there is a better OS to learn, open to that. Would like it to flow smoothly between operating systems so that if something is created on the personal laptop it can make it nicely to the school Chromebook if needed.

Appreciate your thoughts! Happy to answer questions but it may take a bit.

Low-mid gaming laptop, also for school work (US, $1100, maybe a bit more)

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 09:42 AM PST

Helping my son buy a laptop. My budget is $1100 US, but he's been saving and might chip in a few hundred if he feels it's worth it. He wants a gaming laptop, but his gaming interests are a few years old.

    Thanks for your help!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1100-1400 US
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
New would be best, but a decent warranty on a refurb would be OK.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      performance > build > battery > form
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not at all. It's basically a desktop replacement.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      >= 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Gaming (see below), but not super new games, maybe some stop-motion video editing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Subnautica, Terraria ("zoomed out really far"), Minecraft
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A decent keyboard would be nice, although I can always get an external one if necessary. I think he would like a touch-screen, but I don't think it's required.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      N/A

Laptop for small business management, remote medical record program use

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 03:36 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 2500 CAD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Battery life and build quality important. Touch screen ideal.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~14-15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Durable for commuting, 2-in-1 would be ideal
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    • Looking for a durable, fairly light laptop that will relatively long-lasting. Using for a remote medical records service (Avimark) and small business management, with storage primarily needed for word, excel, and PDF documents.
    • Minimum needs: i7 8th gen, 16GB RAM, 1TB Hard Disk SSD, Windows 10 professional

I posted a couple weeks ago but after getting great advice and doing a lot of research, I've updated my post.

I feel like these would be good options:

    ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 4 (14") - 8th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-8665U Processor with vPro™ (1.90 GHz, up to 4.80 GHz with Turbo Boost, 4 Cores, 8 Threads, 8 MB Cache), Display Type 14.0" UHD (3840 x 2160) IPS, anti-reflective, anti-smudge, touchscreen with Dolby Vision™, HDR 400, 500 nits; Memory 16GB, Hard Drive 1 TB SSD

    and

    Yoga C940 (14") - 10th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-1065G7 Processor (1.30 GHz, up to 3.90 GHz with Turbo Boost, 4 Cores, 8 Threads, 8 MB Cache), 14.0" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, touchscreen, glossy, 400 nits; 16 GB LPDDR4X 3733MHz (Soldered), 1 TB PCIe SSD

    I looked at the c740 but I don't like that it doesn't have a thunderbolt 3.

I like the idea of a higher quality screen and more ports in the X1 but I realize the trade off for battery life may not be worth it. The C940 seems to have a much better processor and more future proof but may not be super noticeable for the work I'm doing.

    Appreciate any opinions!

Huawei MateBook 13" 2K Fullview Laptop (256GB) or Apple MacBook Air 13-inch with M1 chip, 7-core GPU, 256GB SSD (Space Grey) [2020]?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 03:13 PM PST

I'm new to laptops and interested in buying one. I have narrowed it down to these two. They are both around the same price and within my budget, but I can't decide on which to buy. Can anyone here help me or at least point me in the right direction?

I'm in Australia with a budget of $1500 AUD.

I would like a new laptop as opposed to a refurbished or used one.

I have no priorities in terms of performance, battery life etc.

I will be using it mainly for schoolwork.

The weight and how thing the laptop is doesn't matter to me.

The only thing I would want in particular would be a good looking screen.

    Thank you.
