    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: US$500 or so, max. Ideally under $300.

Are you open to refurbs/used? very open

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? long battery life and something more powerful than a Celeron N series is preferred. Form factor is somewhat irrelevant. As for build quality, I'm hard on my laptops so I don't expect it to last unless it's built like a tank, so as long as it's not fragile I'm good.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly unimportant.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. indifferent provided the screen is more than 1280×720

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. General productivity. A laptop which performs well running either Windows or Linux is fine (and if it saves me the cost of a Windows license, that can be a plus).

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming is unlikely

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlit keyboard is near a must. Ideally one that isn't bizarrely laid out. (If it would work well for both Excel and vi, then it's probably fine.) Inbuilt WiFi and Bluetooth are also high on the list, followed by onboard Ethernet. A pointing device that isn't frustrating to use is also a plus. If it has some degree of weather resistance, that would be a nice thing to have.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I hope I got this filled in right. The mobile version pastebin link yielded one extremely long line in which I had to figure out where the breaks should be.

And due to current interesting life circumstances that I have no intent to delve into, battery life is my primary motivator followed by a backlit keyboard. If two similar models are provided, I would likely lean towards whichever charges faster. I also do not desire a system off eBay.

I already have a Chromebook, this is to supplement for more than a web browser (and running Android apps to mimic a normal laptop gets tedious).

Need 3 or 4 suggestions, user is very specific about what they want (UK)

    Hi

MD currently has a Samsung Notebook 7 13" but the American model np730xbe-k02us, of which we're struggling to get parts for the smashed glass screen.

We're looking to upgrade him to a suitable replacement that must have the following requirements:

    • 13/14" Screen, Minimum resolution 1080p
    • Must look sleek/minimal & be fairly robust
    • i7 Processor, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
    • USB, HDMI and Ethernet ports
    • Slim, Light & Long Life
    • Easily sourcable, replacement parts in the UK
    • Must not have issues with thermal throttling (He tends to have tonnes of Chrome Tabs open, several massive Excel documents and several outlook mailboxes connected in full local cached mode. Yes, I know.)

Budget is not really an issue, we'll be purchasing two and having one available as a "mirror" to swap over straight away should there by any issues while we get one fixed.

I've been thinking probably the Dell XPS / X1 Carbon but my ultrabook knowlege is somewhat behind.

    Many thanks.

Laptop max 800 euro in the Netherlands

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 03:53 AM PST

I'm looking for a laptop to use for school since my lenovo yoga 520-14ikb died. I would like it to be at least equal in performance if not better than my current laptop.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      800 euro in the Netherlands.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I want to take it with me while traveling. Battery and build quality are most important. Performance shouldn't be less than
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Thinness not important. The weight shouldn't be above 2 kg.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Preferably a 14". A little bigger or smaller is also fine. The resolution should be at least 1920x1080.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'd mainly use it for microsoft office, mail, netflix and browsing the webs (I usually have around 15 tabs open).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
It's a little stupid but I don't want a white/grey/silver laptop. I'd like it to have a dark color. The keyboard has to be of good quality, because I use it to make reports a lot.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I tried a chromebook before but I didn't like the OS, so that is not an option. I don't know a lot about different companies that make laptops. I used my lenovo yoga 520-14ikb and liked it a lot. The touchscreen I barely used as well as the 360 degrees option it had. The hinge of the laptop broke off and I was told it can't be replaced. Other than that I can say I like the brand. Because of covid I'm working from home so I don't have to move the laptop a lot and I can still use it. I'm not in a hurry to buy something new. It it is possible for me to wait a bit for new gen's or something if that is the recommendation.

Productivity laptop, (apparently) unusual specs desired, does anything like this exist? No specific budget just want something that fits my criteria

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 09:20 PM PST

I've tried speccing out so many brands of laptops, can't find anything with this configuration, although it doesn't seem that crazy to me.

This is for purchase in the US

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

No budget limit, I'd just like to see what my options are for this configuration

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, build quality, battery life. It will be mostly plugged in on a desk but decent battery life would be nice.

Form factor doesn't matter although I'd like it to not be a 2 in 1 or have a touchscreen

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not particularly

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15 or 17 inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Professional music production/audio engineering

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No gaming. Prefer not to have dedicated graphics to save cost.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

No touchscreen. Decent I/O, although I use lots of dongles so I'm more concerned about total available bandwidth rather than specific ports. On my MacBook pro I use the 4 thunderbolts to plug in about 10 devices at once (ethernet/hdmi and a bunch of usb), ideally I'd like to have the ability for that much I/O here.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I basically want a 9/10th gen i7 or i9 (or AMD equivalent) at least 6 cores (preferably 8 or 10), 32gb of ram, 1080p screen (although higher is fine, just prefer 1080p for the cost because I don't need anything higher), 1tb ssd, no touchscreen, no 2 in 1, no dedicated graphics. Cannot find anything like that in a windows laptop.

Need help choosing between these laptops.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 02:40 AM PST

Hey, I've been looking around for a laptop these past days and need to get one before winter break ends. I walk around a lot, so I'd like something light and sleek looking (i don't really like the over the top design of gaming laptops). I need a good laptop for editing, solidworks, coding and moderate gaming. I've compiled a list of laptops that I think would suit me. Which one would you recommend? Do you have any other recommendations? Thank you!! (im in Canada btw)

    • Asus Zenbook 14: R7-4700U / 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD / MX350 (1400 CAD ~ 1090 USD)
    • XPS 13: i7 (11th generation)| Iris Xe graphics with shared graphic memory|16 GB | 512 GB SSD (1500 CAD = ~ 1172 USD)
    • Asus Zephyrus G14 : 4800HS / 512 GB SSD / 16GB RAM/ GTX 1660Ti (1400 CAD = ~ 1091 USD )

    Here's the questionnaire:

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**1400 - 1500 (CAD)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**performance is really important, form factor (ultrabook - light - i hate 2-in-1), battery life, build quality
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?**Very important. I need a laptop that I can easily carry around.
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**N/A
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**Mostly CAD (solidworks), overwatch, league and moderate coding.
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**Medium, 60 fps
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**A light laptop in my budget range that will last me a couple years. Clean look and not touch screen. I was thinking of buying a lenovo thinkpad but i hate the way they look.
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**Thanks!

Laptop that can last long term

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 08:03 PM PST

I am finding a personal laptop that can last me a long time, since right now I only have my company laptop and my Asus college laptop which I have been using for 5 years.

My Asus laptop is still working, but I am starting to experience issues with it. Sometimes it just freezes out of nowhere, and it can't connect to wifi unless the router is like 5 feet close. So I'm planning to buy a new one.

I'm not particularly heavy on any stuff but just a bit of everything - light editing in PS, not-so-heavy games (just Dota 2 right now), and a bit of file editing (word, excel, etc). I'm also planning to learn programming (python to be specific).

What would you recommend this 2020? I live in the Philippines if that helps.

Artist re-entering the digital art world in need of a good computer to run programs.

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 12:07 PM PST

I couldn't get the form to copy correctly, but I'll do my best to address each category.

Total budget: Looking to stay under $1200 USD. Under budget is pref to over budget, but I consider this an investment.

Open to refurbs/used? Maybe. Like I said, I consider this an investment in my art side business and figured it would be worth buying new, but I'm open to it.

How important is weight and thinness to you? It's fairly low on my list. All laptops are relatively portable. Once the pandemic is over, being able to carry it to the occasional cafe would be nice, but I'm used to carrying an old heavy 2014 Mac and textbooks so it's relative haha

Preferred screen size? 12 inches feels a bit too small when I saw it in person, so probably the closer to 14/15 the better. If I want a small screen, I might pick up an ipad in addition to a proper laptop 2-1.

Programs you desire to run? At the moment, I used Autodesk Sketchbook Pro. I'd like to be able to use Krita, Clip Studio. I also edit photography, but am mostly using free apps on my Mac for that at the moment. Something that has the power to run heavier art softwares would be nice, but I don't forsee anything as intensive as 3D animation in my future.

Gaming? N/A. Not a gamer, nor have desire to be. Very satisfied with my Animal Crossing thank you very much.

Any specific requirements? Something that is compatible with traditional Wacom Bamboo tablets is good- ie. It has USB ports. Touch screen/2-in-1 for drawing is a major point.

Finishing thoughts? I am currently leaning towards the Lenovo brand 2-in-1 laptops and pairing it with a Bamboo Ink pen over a Microsoft surface pro 7, after seeing and feeling the size of the devices in Best Buy the other day. Mountains of hand sanitizer was used that day.

    Thanks in advance!

Looking for a long lasting laptop in Mx, budget around 20k MXN

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 05:47 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Ideally, under 20,000 MXN but willing to spend more if necessary since I will be buying it in a couple of months. Buying in Mexico
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality is the most important feature as I want a long lasting laptop (my current laptop is 10yo). Battery life is also important, but not the main priority. Performance is not a big deal as I don't really use resource-heavy applications on my laptop, see software and gaming questions. Simple factor is OK, but if there is a 2-in-1 option, it would be fine.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not so important, I'll use it mainly at home.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
At least 11.6", no more than 14-15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'll be using mostly MS Office: Excel, Access, PPT and Visio. Some of the files used in those programs are large but most times they have not presented a problem in my 10yo current laptop. I use a lot Chrome and like to keep multiple tabs opened. I sometimes play games and use portable Photoshop. I also use it to sync my cloud files (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I use the EPIC Games platform, I mostly play Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. Those games are relatively old, I don't care much about playing them at max definition.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality is a must, also an HDMI port since I like to connect my laptop to a secondary monitor and sometimes even to my TV. At least 3 USB ports. Nice to have: touch-screen but not necessary.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Definitively Windows based laptop, I've even considered some Surface laptops but I believe they don't have the required ports.

Looking for a $900 (or lower) gaming laptop

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 11:18 PM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$900 USD or lower. I don't mind going a bit higher if the option is worth it.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Performance, build quality, battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Don't care.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    None of those programs.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I mostly play Path of Exile, Paradox games, Minecraft. I'm not sure if it's possible to play newer titles in a laptop of this budget but that would be great. Medium settings are completely fine with me. Ideally I want 60fps but I don't mind 30fps.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    None.

    Longevity is my biggest priority

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 01:20 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Ideal would be 700 USD or less, but willing to spend up to 1000 USD.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    no

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Simple form factor is probably best; I don't have much use for 2-in-1 features or things like that, and it seems like those kinds of laptops tend to wear out faster.

Build quality is really important as it relates to longevity. I want a laptop that will last as long as possible. Battery life is also important, but I can always replace a battery if need be. Performance is not a big deal as I don't really use resource-heavy applications on my laptop.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not very important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Probably no less than 15". A laptop big enough to have a numeric pad would be nice, but not a requirement.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    No.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Build quality definitely. As I said, a numeric pad would be nice, but not required. Would be nice to have 3+ USB ports and an HDMI output, but also not required.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Definitely want something Windows-based. I love Chromebooks, but they're not right for me right now.

I prefer matte surfaces over glossy.

Physical volume controls (even it's just on swappable function keys) are cool.
