    How can I send raw commands to a dvd drive?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 11:57 AM PST

    I'm not sure if this belongs here, so let me know if there is a more appropriate subreddit to ask this. How can I send raw read/write commands directly to my dvd drive? I like the noise that it makes when it's benchmarking a disk, and I would like to be able to tell the dvd drive to read a specific sector for a variable amount of time, or attempt to burn to a sector. The software I've tried are gnome-disks and xfburn, and they give me errors and don't really let me just randomly test a specific sector of the disc. My end goal is to be able to make a sequence of sounds with my dvd drive without needing to burn a disk like normal. I got inspired by those floppy drive music videos on youtube, but I couldn't find anything in google about dvd music. Is this doable, and if not, can you explain why? If it is, I'd appreciate some pointers to good articles/tutorials. Thanks.

    Why does `cat` print characters after my bash prompt?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 04:15 PM PST

    As root:

    cat /proc/719/auxv

    With some processes, this gives me no output.

    With others, I get this:

    ``` [root@cerberus proc]# cat 719/auxv !֎ýÿûë¿d@æë3V8 À² /æë3V
    ©=֎ýéO֎ý¹=֎ý[root@cerberus proc]# 1;2c
    ```

    When there is an output, I get 1;2c after my prompt. If I hit Return, it attempts to execute this as a program.

    How does cat return anything after the prompt?

    Missing document thumbnails

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 03:30 PM PST

    I just did an install of Manjaro Architect with a very minimal Cinnamon desktop, after installation I set show thumbnails to yes in Nemo and downloaded the libreoffice-fresh and ffmpegthumbnailer packages. This gave me working thumbnails for all image and video formats as well as PDF documents.

    However, I do not have thumbnails for any office formats (.ods, .odt, .docx ect.). I did have thumbnails for these formats on my previous Cinnamon Arch Linux install so I know it should be possible. Does anyone have an idea what's going on?

    [Debian] How can I make side by side windows default to filling the space rather than half the screen like in Windows

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 08:43 AM PST

    Hi. I'm using Debian 10 Buster with the MATE desktop environment. On Windows, when I drag a window to the side of the screen to make it fill half the screen and then drag it to fill more of the screen and then drag another window to fill the other side of the screen, it'll fill all the space not taken up by the first window. On my current system, the second window just takes up half the screen regardless and I have to manually drag it to take up the proper amount of space. Is there a package I can install or a setting I can change to change this behavior?

    How can I install Pop!_OS's NVIDIA drivers without completely reinstalling the OS?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 02:37 PM PST

    Basically the title. I just bought a new NVIDIA GPU, while my old GPU is an AMD RX 580. When I installed Pop!_OS, I installed the AMD version. Is there a way to install the packages included with the NVIDIA version without completely reinstalling the OS? Can I do this with the AMD GPU still installed, so that I just have to plug in the NVIDIA GPU and have it work? Thanks!

    Customizable Distro "skin"?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 10:46 AM PST

    I'm new to linux outside of tooling around with various distros, and I'd like to get into it more. Are there any tools to make a custom distro using a GUI? My intention isn't to build it from the ground to be clear. I just intend to change the aesthetics and the programs that it ships with. I may be working on a range of computers from ARM chromebooks to Ryzen 3 Desktops. I don't care if it's Ubuntu based, OPenSuse based, or whatever, just that it's relatively easy for me to do. In an ideal world I would like to choose my options in a browser and then download an ISO to mount, but no such tool will exist or be even close.

    Ubuntu/Pop/Manjaro installer can't see internal eMMC storage on laptop

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 02:04 PM PST

    I bought a new, cheap laptop with 64GB eMMC storage and Windows 10 preinstalled. I wanted to install Linux, so I entered the BIOS and disabled the AMD Platform Security Processor, changed the boot mode to Legacy and disabled 'OS Optimisations' (which is for Windows). However, I've tried three distros and none of them can see the internal eMMC storage whatsoever, in the installer, using lsblk or under GNOME Disks.

    I read that I should disable Secure Boot and/or change the drive from RAID to AHCI, however these options aren't available in the BIOS. Right now I'm trying creating a Windows recovery bootable USB, booting to it and wiping the internal storage to see if that works. The laptop is a Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 1, right now I've got Manjaro installed to a microSD card in it, however this isn't ideal due to the slower speeds.

    Any ideas how I can solve this are much appreciated.

    Hi, I want to mount a partition in my disk, I want to mount it read and write without the need for user to be root, I also want the mount to be on startup (I think this is related to fstab). Artifacts after screen goes into power saving mode with XFX rx 580 8GB

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 12:35 PM PST

    First off, some pics: https://imgur.com/a/KXnWiQD

    Some days ago I have bought a pc with 1st gen ryzen 16gb ram and XFX 580 8GB. Today it shipped. Aparently used as media server. It is connected directly via hdmi to a fullhd monitor.

    For starters, Uefi gui always looks correct.

    It shipped with linux mint just cause, and after 3 or so minutes it went into reverse colors and locked me out... the mouse still moved and was responsive tho. Weird.

    So i've installed kubuntu 20.04 LTS and it kind of works?

    After a lot of troubleshooting, and win10 install, i have come to conclusion : it works fine with win10, I have even gamed on it... in fact, gaming works on kubuntu too. But any linux distro i tried , gets artifacts at some point or another. Sometimes under light load, but always when the screen goes blank.

    Once when i booted puppy linux i noticed that some characters turned purple, and after it booted proper - sure enough, everything was checker boarded and system was stuck.

    What i can test my VRAM with? Are rx 580 known for having bad time with linux or what?

    Is there some kind of power saving option I could turn off so that doesnt happen (i've done similar thing to realtek audio on other pc cause it buzzed)?

    Should i just return it (The price was good and mostly-windows gpu is fine by me too.)

    Ubuntu-related help needed, please.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 03:34 AM PST

    Hi, I have lubuntu 18.04. LTS installed and upgraded on my notebook system with: -Intel Atom N455 1.66 Ghz -2 GB RAm -250 GB HDD

    1) When I tried to install it normally, it gave me irq or apci error, so I disabled apci on boot menu with f6. Everything was good until when it was not. Now the netbook doesn'T shut down, it's just stuck there. (Not 10 mins, no not because of my system. I discovered it after I fell asleel and found it still "shutting off" Then it never shut off.) 2) This was okay too, when wifi became disabled. It says i have it disabled by swithc, which I havent. My netbook has one but it's not SwITCHED OFF. **I did the updates as the OS suggested me to, nothing that I meddled with.

    Any and all help is welcome. I like this distro and it suits my machine's needs on paper, I am thinking of going to antix, mxlinux, bodhi or xubuntu. Please help me . Thank you and peace.

    IMPORTANT UPDATE: When I try to reinstall lubuntu from a fresh rewritten usb, I get this error written perhaps 20 times on the screen:

    ACPI ERROR: AE_NOT_FOUND. While resolving a named reference package element - LNKD (20190816/dspginit-440)

    in addition 10 others only with variations on LNKA, LNKB, LNKC,LNKF,LNKG.

    Last error says AE_ALREADY_EXISTS

    Truly Yours, Miralay.

    Scheduling cron jobs

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 10:43 AM PST

    So I want to run a couple of scripts a couple of times a week and I found out that the way to do that is with cron jobs. The question i have is, what happens if the computer isn't on at that particular time... Does it run immediately after the computer turns on? For example... If the job is scheduled at 9 am.. And the computer turns on at 10 am, will the job run at 10 am? Or will it wait for the next scheduled time?
