Is there a reason that some flags are typed like -this, while others are typed like --this? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:09 AM PST I'm not sure if this indicates anything or is just a stylistic choice or who knows what. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:08 PM PST Is it a matter of constant tinkering and fixing things, or can it "just work" kind of how a mac does? One reason I'm so glad I switched from Windows to Mac is I was spending too many hours of my life fixing problems just to get the OS to work smoothly. I've done literally 0 hours of fixing problems in the 7 years I've used mac os. So as a prospective linux convert for privacy reasons (especially after Big Sur showing the privacy violation route apple has chosen, and I don't think it's going to change), I'm wondering how many hours of my life I should expect to waste per month with linux tinkering so I can weight the pros and cons of a switch. Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:55 PM PST I've been slowly converting my workflow to FOSS tools over the past 2 years and I'm almost to the point where I feel comfortable making the jump to Linux. The only thing really holding me back is an Autohotkey type alternative. I would like to be able to:
Does a program like this exist or can existing tools be made to create this functionality (i.e. python)? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:57 AM PST Hi everyone. I feel like this question is kind of stupid, but I'd like to know if is possible, from a computer connected to an intranet, to see the IP address from that intranet server, and connect to it later remotely. Thanks in advantage, and sorry for any possible mistakes, English is not my native language. [link] [comments] |
Commiserate about fdisk with me Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:20 PM PST I was partitioning my laptop to dual boot and I created a partition exactly in the unallocated space in fdisk. Everything looked fine, the default drive number was 5 because i had 4 other partitions being used already. Realized I forgot to create a GPT key; not even sure what this does, but I exited fdisk without writing, restarted, created GPT key, and did everything else the same. I saw that the default suggested block areas now were now the entire disk and that the suggested partition number was 1. Discouraging, but I corrected the sector values and left the partition number and hit write. It wiped all the partitions on the drive and creates a new partition where the unallocated space used to be (now, everywhere.) What did I do wrong?? ugh. I assume the GPT key changed things somehow. Before, it had detected where the partition was going. This time it knew to wipe everything? Thanks for reading [link] [comments] |
RX 590 is hotter (+10°C) on Manjaro than Windows 10 Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:04 AM PST Hi, I have Manjaro installed on a separate SATA SSD to Windows 10 on an M.2 SSD, where GRUB is located, and I can't seem to get my GPU (XFX Radeon RX 590 Fatboy) to run silently when idle as it can on W10; the GPU sits idle at ~50°C compared to ~40°C on W10, with the fans spinning at >700 RPM vs. 0 RPM.
Actual GPU usage is about the same: 0% as I type this, only Firefox open, VRAM usage around 12%. Radeon-profile reports the card is in "Performance" mode, but I can't change it to "Balanced" or "Battery". The drop-down menu below shows the GPU is set to "auto" at boot but that has core and memory clocks set to >1500 MHz and 2000 MHz! The "low" setting only lowers the memory clock to 400 MHz but the GPU still runs hotter than on W10. Is there anything I can do? :( (Edit: just logged into W10 to compare and the "GPU Clock Speed" that the Radeon Software reports is 300 MHz, with a "VRAM Clock Speed" of 400 MHz.) I guess I'm asking if it's possible to have the same "zero fan mode" that I have on W10 on Manjaro! Thanks for any help, sorry if I'm being dumb. :) [link] [comments] |

How to make meta + normal keys become the Numpad keys Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:19 PM PST I am in KDE and using Mouse navigation on the num pad and I am trying to make a meta combination become the num pad keys, this way I can move the mouse directly from the keyboard, and never have to move my hand from it, not even to the num pad, this would make my word flow, much faster, does anyone know how to do this? My pc won't boot to windows on dual boot Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:36 AM PST I had a dual boot windows 10 + pop os running completely fine. I decided to update windows directly from latest iso installer.exe . It completed 100% update status and then booted straight to Pop OS. I restarted and checked boot options, there is no windows. Also, I never had grub menu for some reason, I always used boot options whenever I needed to use pop OS. Can anyone help me with this ? [link] [comments] |
apt updrade- what is groovy? What is gvfs? Why wont it upgrade? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 11:23 AM PST Since installing Pop OS a month ago, apt upgrade doesn't upgrade some components of gvfs: apt list --upgradable:
These persist after an upgrade. Can someone eli5 gvfs and groovy as I see lots of references to these things but haven't been able to make much sense of them in quick searches. Also, I know I don't need to worry about these not upgrading, but let's say that I'm the type of person that feels some stress and a little panic when I see the same lines printed when I list upgradable even after doing an upgrade... What do I need to do to make it happen? Edit: Apparently I needed to run apt autoremove to remove some packages that weren't required first. [link] [comments] |
Adobe options with Linux - VMs/DualBoot? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 11:19 AM PST Hey, longtime Mac user here, transitioning over to a desktop built PC running Ubuntu. The problem is I'm pretty tied to Adobe for now for work, and I can't move to a new software suite. Does anyone have experience running Adobe services in a VM or Wine? Or should I just do a dual boot, and use Windows when I need to do graphics/video work? [link] [comments] |

Advice for starting local computer club for young adults, what would make you what to join? Posted: 30 Nov 2020 03:40 PM PST (Sorry if this is the wrong place to post) Hello everyone I want to create a fun, friendly and welcoming computer club that is targeted towards people who have an interest in computers but may have never gone deep into any particular subject i.e programming. Do you have any suggestions that would make the club fun, exciting and rewarding? What would make you want to join? [link] [comments] |

How do I know if a (big) copy action has completed, or is still functioning, in Ubuntu? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 09:09 AM PST I'm trying to copy a 2Tb USB drive to a 4Tb internal drive, and yes, that's going to take a long time. But I went about it in the Ubuntu interface the way I would in windows, I just copied the folder and pasted in to the new location. It seems to have started properly, but I don't see a progress window, or any indication (after 8 hours) that it's still copying besides some files and directories successfully copied to the new directory. Far short of all of them, of course. Is there some way I can keep tabs on this copy? Understand how much is done? Or should I kill it and use a better tool for something like this? If so, how do I find it and kill it, and what tool do you suggest? Thanks for any help! EDIT: Okay, after a bit more hammering away at it I ended up installing grsync, a graphical interface for rsync. It seems to be copying away just fine right now, and giving me status as it goes. Appreciate the responses! [link] [comments] |

Is there any danger in formatting a USB drive? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:29 AM PST I know, I know. This question isn't really about Linux but I really don't know where else to post this. I tried running Pop OS in a live environment, tried it, looks alright. But now I want to test Manjaro, and my USB drive is still flashed. Is there any danger in formatting a USB drive in exFAT? I just have to be really careful, because if my PC screws up for some reason and warranty will void, I will most likely stay without a PC for at least a year. [link] [comments] |
USB bionic puppy live bootable disk problem Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:22 AM PST Hi everyone, I made a bootable bionic puppy 32 bit disk and ran and installed it on my pc, but now my usb now doesn't work anymore like anormal usb. I checked a box somqhere in the installation process to make a read only disk or something to save my user data, i plugged into windows, nothing happened. Then on another linux distro i installed gparted and i unticked the box "bootable" now windows at least sees it. On the other linux distro it recognizes it as a CD by the system. All the options on Gparted for formatting and so on are dimmed, unavailable, windows command tool "diskpart" doesnt work. PLease help me, how can i retake my usb? Thank you. Best Distro to Run Off a Flash Drive? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:14 AM PST My main desktop died and I'm too lazy to get it fixed since I don't use it too often. I have my work laptop and I'm wondering if it makes sense just boot into a Linux distro on that when I need to use a pc. Really all I do some light coding, watching YouTube, browse Reddit, and play chess when I use a PC. So I imagine boring from a usb would be fine for that? So what's a good distro for this? The laptop is by no means underpowered so I don't need something really lightweight. Would Ubuntu work fine? [link] [comments] |

Update manager glitched and wiped out my system. Any ideas what happened? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:16 AM PST So I've been linuxing for a few months and am still not very good at it. Anyway, update manager started to not work properly...it'd download, unpack and come up with an error. So yesterday there was a kernel update and when I rebooted I just didn't have a computer anymore. Any idea what could have happened so I can avoid it happening again? Linux Mint. [link] [comments] |
