Is there a resource where I can enter my model of laptop and it tells me a list of part I can upgrade?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 01:46 PM PST

I know next to nothing about computers, not even enough to check if this question has ready been asked, so I apologize if this has been answered, I tried searching but its all jargon to me. I bought a laptop from HP but I think it came with a below useful processor? But I don't know if I can even change it out, let alone what kinds I need to look for when buying.

How to add an external graphics card?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 11:35 AM PST

I have a laptop with integrated video card. Is there a way to buy an external one and hook it up for gaming? I'm not familiar with this area of tech. My laptop is Asus UX331FA-AS51, no thunderbolt.

What could be causing a slow/lagging HP laptop with barely any programs on it? (8GB RAM, 240GB SSD)

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 10:23 AM PST

Just got this laptop from a refurbishing company on ebay. Fair enough, it was only £170, but it is running awfully compared to the £150 Acer I bought in 2016. It lags both online and offline when loading anything that requires pictures, video or ads. It lags on light gaming such as the Sims 4 and on the origin interface itself. I've even noticed a bit of lag simply when typing.

    new legion laptop frequent BSOD

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 10:13 AM PST

I got the Legion 5-15ARH05H on Black Friday, and only opened it up a week ago. I haven't been using it intensively or for very long but my laptop's been randomly restarting once or twice a day, sometimes with a BSOD and other times without. When I do get a BSOD, it's usually when I'm watching YouTube or Twitch, and I've seen 3 different error messages: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, KMODE_EXCEPTION, and IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL. I looked them up but still am at a loss as to why those occur.

I've tried updating drivers (they were all up-to-date). Also ran the hardware diagnostics and all parts pass. I sent in a ticket yesterday night.

Has this happened to anyone else? Would a factory reset work?

How would this Lenovo 5 laptop fair for gaming?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:43 AM PST

    Hey all,

I am just wondering how this laptop will fare for gaming both now and into the next few years? I am a little worried as my friend said that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660Ti is getting to be a little outdated at this point, and I don't want to be immediately left in the dust with gaming as soon as I buy this. Would like to get a couple years out of it at least.

As a note, I am not someone who needs games to run absolutely top-tier, /r/pcmasterrace quality or anything, just looking to be able to play them and enjoy them running smoothly.

Envy 15 issues (if any) ??

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:21 AM PST

Hi I am planning to buy the hp envy 15 with i7 10750h, gtx1660ti and a 1080p screen. Hp uk is offering a 3 year care pack currently, and i am also hoping to get a student discount which would make this a pretty great deal. I would like to know from long term users about any major issues with the envy in general. I have heard about battery drain, fan noise and software bugs (not sure if any of these are dealbreakers).

My alternate option is the zbook power g7 (thicker but lighter and suits my work) because i have heard highly of zbooks in general.

    Thank you.

Ps: wish you all a very happy new year!

I might finally make the switch from windows to mac

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:09 AM PST

The new macbooks with the m1 chips are very tempting. The biggest thing for me is the new fanless design on the air. Being able to have the laptop on my lap or bed without feeling guilty that I'm blocking the vents. Convince me I'm wrong

Best option to replace my P50

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 08:16 AM PST

tl/dr Do any manufacturers still use traditional Docks? Is there another manufacturer that build durable (not toughbook durable) laptops comparable to my P50? Is the 5Ghz boost on new intel CPU's actually common to reach? Is the new P17 comparable to the P50? If you were to buy a $3k+ workstation what would you be looking at?

I am an IT Tech and will be looking to replace my current workstation. Functionality is the highest priority for my device. Couldn't care less about how it looks or how bulky it may be. I have been out of the loop for hardware in the last couple few years so hoping someone is willing to assist me with my purchase. I have done very little review so far.

I love my Lenovo P50. Such a beast. Expandable. Incredibly durable. Survived drops in the field with no issues (minor crack in the bottom case). But it is time to start shopping (it took me almost a year to find my last laptop)

    • i7-6820HQ (2.7Ghz 4c/HT which was uncommon when I bought it)
    • 32GB RAM (run VM's) Expanded after purchase
    • 17" 1080P Display (Display quality is not high on my list)
    • Quattro M2000 (do not do graphics but I like having a bit of a GPU in there)
    • 3 HDD's (1 x 2.5" and 2 x NVME) added the NVME's after purchase

From what I can find so far the P17 is the closest Lenovo product. But I am wondering if there might be other manufacturers with similar Workstation grade laptops.

The only thing I really would like is a higher frequency CPU to speed up single threaded performance, a couple more cores would be nice, but everything else is great with what I have. I see the 10th gen Intels have a crazy high boost (5ghz). Guessing this may cover this base.

Bought it for $3k (CDN) 5 years ago, so I am setting a $3k budget, that said I bought it during a sale direct from Lenovo so guessing I may need to increase it to meet my demands. I have 1 year left on my extended warranty (includes accidental breakage) which was a 2 year extension to the 3 years I bought originally.

A big question for me is are there any laptop manufacturers still using real docks and not the USB docks? My fellow technicians always have issues with the USB dock. Mine just works every dam time I use it (have one at home and one at the office).

I like that my current machine was expandable. The P50 let me upgrade the RAM and install additional hard drives. I would love to have this again but it probably won't be a deal breaker.

Any info you laptop junkies may have is appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Buying Good Performing Laptop

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 08:01 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      80,000 Rupees (India)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
High Priority for Graphics cards, should be able to run games well (10xx series or 16xx series?)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      -Not important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Gaming and college stuffs. Games include some top rated games- COD, GTA, Minecraft, CSGO, etc.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
-Any FPS above 50 and static without fluctuation is very good for me :)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Very very important requirement would be that the Laptop's name in the website of purchase should not mention is as Gaming Laptop . Would be so greatful if that's met :)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      Not really :)

    Right laptop for autistic son

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 07:46 AM PST

My son is 11 and loves Minecraft. He got a chromebook and then found out that it doesn't play Minecraft.

What's the least expensive laptop I can buy that will last a few years and will run Minecraft well?

    Surface Pro 4 any good?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 07:11 AM PST

I'm finally in a position to get a laptop and I've been eyeing up the Surface Pro 4. I mainly want to play Minecraft (Hypixel Skyblock) but it'll be good for my art with the touch screen. It's an 8gb ram version so my friend have told me it should be ok for Minecraft. Is this a good choice or is there something I'm overlooking?

    Are Huawei laptops any good

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 06:59 AM PST

I've been looking for a new laptop for a while now. I currently have an old HP Chromebook I think. Bought over 5 year's ago and it's completely at the end of it's lifespan now. Battery is shot. Takes ages to load up and runs so slow and sluggish, it's time for an upgrade

Anyway I've been looking around and I've noticed quite a few people recommend a Huawei laptop. Either the d14 or d15, and from what I've heard is that they are good midrange laptop that doesn't break the bank

I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with them. How do they handle. Are the specs any good. I'll admit I'm not good with technology for my age (22) so I have no idea what I'm looking for. But from what I can tell this laptop is a great laptop and in my price range (btw £600 and £800). I don't want anything too big and heavy so these seems to fit that
