[DEV] Checkout Keyboard/Button Mapper - a free and open source key mapping app for Android

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 11:52 AM PST

GitHub Repo, Play Store, Fdroid, XDA

Hello everyone! I'm the developer of a free and open source key mapping app (link) and I need help and feedback so that I can make it useful to many more people. 🎉😀

Right now it can only remap buttons that are detected through the accessibility service and fingerprint reader gestures (in latest beta). It can't remap any "special" buttons like the Bixby button or the Google Assistant button and it doesn't work seamlessly on Android TV since I don't have these devices. This is where you come in! I will need help adding support for more buttons and Android TV - no coding experience required, just know how to use ADB or be willing to learn without a ton of help from me.

    Special Buttons

I first want to add support for the Bixby button because it is a very common button that people want to remap. I will add support for other special buttons if there is someone to help.

I need to figure out the hacky workaround to detect the Bixby button since it isn't detected through the accessibility service. I've talked to someone and we partially figured out a way to detect but I don't know how universal or reliable it is and they seem to be quite busy, which makes development difficult. You would be of great help if you know how to use ADB and I know most people are very busy but it would make development much smoother if you could reply to messages within a day because quick testing and debugging will be required.

Join the Discord Server (preferred) and let me know that you want to help with Bixby support or comment in the GitHub issue.

    Android TV

Right now the app is only designed for mobile Android devices. Many people have shown interest in making the app work properly on Android TV and so I would appreciate your suggestions on how to optimise the app in a way that it can seamlessly be used on TVs. Since I haven't used an Android TV and only have access to the bare-bones emulator, I think asking the community how to make the best user experience for TVs would make the app much better than if I tried to design a (probably sub-par) solution myself.

Join the Discord Server or post issues and comments in the issue tracker to discuss and debug issues in more detail. If you join the Discord server let us know that you want to help with Android TV support so that you get notified when I ask for help with Android TV bugs and features.

I have created a GitHub Project where I track the development of all the issues and features specific to Android TV support.

    Ways to help...

    1. I mainly need advice on how to layout the app since there are a lot of buttons and menus and the app currently requires a lot of swiping, scrolling and drag-and-dropping. Let me know of any things other apps do which make the UI clumsy or difficult to navigate. Send me links to apps that I should look at as examples of how to or not to design layouts or place UI controls. Write your suggestions under this post or here.
    2. Find features and buttons in Key Mapper that don't work or don't apply to your TV.
    3. Finding and testing fixes for bugs is also very helpful! People have already found a few bugs and it would be great if more people could test whether they happen on their devices as well. Here are a bunch to try to reproduce: #487, #503, #525.
    4. Test whether the app can detect all the buttons on your remote. If there are buttons on your remote that Key Mapper doesn't detect let me and others know but I won't be able to add support for them unless someone finds some hacky workaround to detect them. The app primarily uses an accessibility service to detect Key Events and it is up to the Android system to decide which Key Events the service receives. Some OEMs prevent their custom buttons from being sent to it and so hacky workarounds are required. Often a custom button will write a specific message to the logcat whenever it is pressed or fails to function as intended. I'm not sure how ADB works on Android TV so you'll have to ask someone else or Google for help with how to look at the logcat.
    5. If there are any Android developers that want to contribute that would be great as well! There will be bugs and new layouts to work on.
    6. You can also help with stuff not related to Android TV.

    Happy New Year! 🎉

Whats a good, usable notes app?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 08:59 AM PST

I don't know why its so difficult to find a decent notes app. I want a ad-free, simple app that has basic formatting that you can title the note and write whatever, and can share to email easily.

What are popular third party apps for Quora?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 10:08 AM PST

A while ago I checked the official Quora app and it's just like the native Reddit app, I went back to using the website. Are there any other third party apps for Quora just like those for Reddit like Relay, Apollo, Boost, etc. which are for Reddit?

Thanks in advance for your help.

From your research which have you discovered to be the absolute king of speed

I'm not interested in your own personal favourite (though feel free to add that as well if you want with an asterisk)

From what I can see it is a toss up between chrome and brave but every tester and reviewer comes with their own results usually varied in final result.

I increased my battery life by using Blokada.

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 12:06 PM PST

So I recently stumbled upon Blokada, a widely known ad-blocker. But I never knew that it blocked trackers too.

I own a Poco X3 and mainly bought it because of the 5120 mAh battery. However, I used to get only 5 hours of screen on time (120 Hz).

Using Blokada, I disabled trackers from Facebook and Instagram. There are actually a lot of them. This is how sponsored ads sometimes name your device brand in the description (at least for me) to make it more convincing. They also continuosly track your phone usage, draining your battery and invading your privacy. Upon disabling them, my battery life substantially increased. I also blocked other trackers which were tracking me a lot.

After doing this, I started the day at around 85% battery. it's been 4 hours now and my battery is at 54%. YouTube was used for an hour while connected to my earbuds. Instagram was used for an hour and 18 minutes under the same. I also listened to music connected to my earbuds through Bluetooth which, by the way, remains on all the time so I can easily pair my earbuds. I did switch to 90 Hz using a third party app (for me, it's not that much of a difference).

You must also remove all battery restrictions for Blokada, including autostart (if applicable) and enable it as an 'always on VPN'. The app consumes almost no battery at all and can be kept on at all times. If any app has any issues or you want to support a developer, you can always blacklist it within the app. Note: Xiaomi users must blacklist "com.xiaomi.discover" under the 'system' to be able to check for and install software updates.

[DEV] Bazookoids - a 3D multiplayer split screen vehicle physics game

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 05:46 AM PST

    Hi all,

I thought I'd share one of my Android projects, since I think it's fairly unique and I really enjoyed making it.

Bazookoids is a quickfire 3D game where two players each control a vehicle within the confines of an arena. The aim is to chase/ram your opponent, and flip them over onto their back so that they can no longer drive. Whoever is disabled first, wins that round!

The game is played on a single device held in portrait mode, with a player at each end. You can accelerate by dragging up/down on the left half of your screen, and turn by dragging left/right on the right half. Powerups will also appear periodically, which can shake things up and make all the difference.

For those interested, Bazookoids was made with MonoGame - a great 3D API which was born out of Microsoft's XNA. This, along with Perilune - another project of mine - were a great way to learn the ins and outs of making games for Android. I also made the physics engine from scratch, which means it was really easy to tune the behaviour and feel of the vehicles to my liking.

    Thanks for looking :)

A question about Sleep for android

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:23 PM PST

    https://i.imgur.com/k8l76V9.jpg

About the feature called "sonar". In the FAQ it says:

is sleep tracking with sonar safe for your health? Ultrasound is generally considered safe if it is at normal volume. Regarding health effects, it works in a similar way to normal audible sound, i.e. very loud ultrasound can damage your hearing, whereas at low volume it is safe to hear. When using speakers, smartphones are nowhere close to be able to produce such loud sounds as to damage your hearing. We also use ultrasound that is very close to the hearing range (around 20 kHz), so the effects of the ultrasound are almost identical to hearing a high pitched sound at the same volume (expect you can't hear it at all). The ultrasound volume we use is around 40 dB – which is lower than normal speech volume. You can measure the sound level yourself using e.g. this app.

Can a smartphone speaker really produce a 20khz sound ? and a smartphone mic "capture" 20khz sounds ? Is it a bs feature ?
