How to take care of my laptop?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 01:13 PM PST

Last week I bought my first personal laptop. It's Dell Inspiron 5505 (specs in the comments if anyone cares). My question is do you have any advice on how to properly use it without screwing it up too soon? For example, how can I preserve my battery for longer? Should I use a charging limiter if it is available and when should I use it plugged in and when should I use the battery? I am currently using it on battery and when it drops to around 15% I plug it in. Do you have any other advise?

    Thanks in advance guys! :)

    Do laptops need screen protectors?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 12:44 PM PST

Bought a good mid-range (non-touch) laptop I'd like to use for a few years. Is a screen protector worth buying? And if so, any suggestions?

    Adding displays beyond GPU outputs

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 12:28 PM PST

I have a Lenovo P51 with a Quadro M1200. I've just finished building my six monitor setup, but it seems like there's only hardware support for 5 displays (4 on the dGPU [DVI, HDMI, 2x via TB3] and the built in screen on the iGPU)

Is it possible to add another hardware-driven display? Afaik, the only way to add more displays is software-driven using usb 3.0, like DisplayLink. But the good adapters are expensive, and the bad ones can have buggy drivers. For both, they use a lot of CPU power, and I already hit 100% using regularly while working.

Would missing screws on laptop heatsink array increase temperatures?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 02:41 PM PST

    Hi everyone!

I bought an ASUS TUF Gaming FX504GM laptop 2 years ago, and it's always run a bit hot, but it's gotten worse I think, or perhaps I've just decided that I don't want to put up with it anymore?

So I took the back off to clear out the ventilation ducts and replace the thermal paste.

I've just discovered that on the heatsink array there are supposed to be 3 screws arranged around the CPU, and 3 screws arranged around the GPU. Presumably these would provide even pressure to push the heatsink evenly onto the CPU and GPU.

The problem is, one screw is missing from each group of three!

Would this be increasing temperatures due to uneven contact between the heatsink and CPU/GPU? Or would 4 out of 6 screws be just fine?

    Thanks!

Asking for experience on swapping Laptop-CPUs.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 02:01 PM PST

Hey everyone, i realize this might be a difficult and very possibly impossible thing to do, which is why im asking for advice and experiences.

I got a 2 year old, low-end Lenovo Ideapad 530S running a AMD Ryzen 2200U processor. What im hoping to do is track down a 3500U processor and swap that in to double my core-count.

From what i've researched, they should both run at the same TDP, 15Watt being nominal, but i can't find any documentation of anyone having tried this, which is what worries me. Im unsure if the CPU is soldered to the motherboard aswell, but Lenovo don't seem to do that to other parts on this model that are commonly soldered on other models, so i'm hoping it can be swapped.

Is there anyone that have tried this before and/or knows wheter or not it is possible? Im also a bit concerned about how much more heat it'll produce, as the 2200U already runs at 70-80 degrees on full loads. If anyone has any experience and/or knowledge on any of this, and modifying laptop specs in general, wheter it'll work or not, i'd appreciate to hear about it. :)))

    The laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad 530s, produt.number: 81H10000MX

As mentioned it's running an AMD ryzen 3 2200U (Zen+ chipset, 2 cores, 4 threads, 15watt nominal TDP) now, with 2 sticks of 2400Mhz 4GB ddr4 RAM, (making it 8GB total)

I want to swap it for an AMD Ryzen 5 2500U (Zen+ chipset, 4 cores, 8 threads, 15watt nominal TDP)

Any opinions, suggestions and experiences are appreciated!! :)

Does exist aluminium MacBook-like laptop with gaming GPU?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 01:25 PM PST

I want to buy laptop for editing photos and playing Euro Truck Simulator and Cities Skylines. I like aluminium design of MacBooks, Huawei Matebook and Asus ZenBook, but these do not have gaming GPU.

HP Pavilion, Lenovo IdeaPad/Legion, ASUS TUF have gaming GPU, but they have often rubbish plastic construction. Also I do not need full power machines as I will play mid-range games only as mentioned above, so CPUs like Intel U should be enough for me.

Also I want to avoid laptops on which you can cook (read they are too hot when playing a game, I have such experiences with my nongaming IdeaPad)

Ideal budget is around 1000€/$, but it can be a bit more (+-200€).

Big thanks in advance for your answers.

Trying to choose between these two laptops?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 01:13 PM PST

    Hi,

I am currently in the market for a new laptop. I have narrowed it down between these two choices.

    Choice One:

    https://www.costco.com/hp-envy-13.3%22-touchscreen-intel-evo-platform-laptop---11th-gen-intel-core-i7-1165g7---1080p.product.100701455.html

    Choice Two:

    https://www.costco.com/hp-envy-13.3%22-touchscreen-laptop--10th-gen-intel-core-i7-10510u---geforce-mx350---4k.product.100579401.html

The ideal laptop for me would be one that has an i7 processor with at least 16GB of ram, at least 1 TB hard drive/1 TB SSD, at least 3.0 GHz, a 4k resolution screen, touch screen, 13-14 inch ideally, and a thin/sleek design.

I like the second choice because it has the newest Intel 11th generation i7 (Evo platform), but I also like choice one because it has 4K graphics (4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) Display).

In other words, the first choice has the newest i7 11th generation Evo platform whereas the second choice does not. But, the second choice has 4k graphics (4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160)), whereas the first choice does not and just has normal graphics (1920 x 1080 (Full HD)).

Therefore, overall between those two computers, which do you guys think would be a better choice?

    Thank you!

New laptop for design, video and fun!

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 06:25 PM PST

Hello everyone, I'm looking for new gear. As my 6-year-old laptop (Lenovo G50-70) does not do 90% of the things I want and need to do - I am looking for a new one.

I do not have specific hardware requirements, because I only know general things when it comes to hardware, but my plans are: - graphic design (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) - video editing (for now in 1080p, but if it could handle 4K, it would be great) and creating animations - playing not very demanding games (I'm not a fan of The Witcher or Cyberpunk, but I would like to be able to play, for example, Yakuza or incoming Syberia) - browsing the internet (I mention it because unfortunately I'm that type of guy who can't have less than 20 cards in his browser :'v) - creating a "mobile PC" by using a docking station (something like this video )

Hardware requirements that I can tell about, based on my general knowledge: - relatively large disk (at least 512GB), SSD would be best - lot of RAM (at least 16GB) - processor that will not choke on rendering - Bluetooth(!), Wi-Fi - fast USB ports - possibility of integration with the docking station (as above) - a screen no larger than 16 inches (17+ is just too big to carry for me, the equipment should be conveniently mobile)

My budget is about 1300$, but if you find something special up to max. 1900$, feel free to post it too! (Oh, and just in case it's important, I live in Center Europe, Poland to be specific)

I will be grateful for all the suggestions and advices, because although I can find something myself, it is so hard for me to choose something specific, the more so because I do not know how it will perform under specific conditions. Thank you in advance! 😁

(And sorry for possible mistakes, it's not my native language, but I hope it's understandable as a whole)

Anyone have any experience or thoughts on the HP Pavilion Laptop - 14t-dv000?

I'd like to get a laptop for in person dnd. Use case would be roll20, discord, youtube, google docs, and maybe light gaming (OldSchool Runescape)

Here are the options that I chose for the 14t-Dv000:

    Price: ~$450

    • Windows 10 Home 64

    • Intel® Core™ i5-1135G7 (up to 4.2 GHz, 8 MB L3 cache, 4 cores) + Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics

    • 8 GB DDR4-3200 SDRAM (2 X 4 GB)

    • 14" diagonal, FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS, micro-edge, BrightView, 250 nits

    • 256 GB Intel® SSD + 16 GB Intel® Optane™ memory

    • Realtek Wi-Fi 5 (2x2) and Bluetooth® 5 Combo (MU-MIMO supported)

Any other recommendations are appreciated - looking for screen size 13'' or 14'' for portability.

Ordered New Dell XPS 15 (9500) - Upgrade parts arrived early and seeking advice on approach with upgrading/recycling RAM and the use of Thermal Pads. (First time upgrading a computer)

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 12:00 PM PST

Ordered New Dell XPS 15 (9500) - Upgrade parts arrived early and seeking advice on approach with upgrading/recycling RAM and the use of Thermal Pads. (First time upgrading a computer)

Purchased Dell XPS 15 9500 on Black Friday sale. I went with the following relevant specifications to minimize costs.

    • 8GB DDR4-2933MHz, 2x4G
    • 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD

I will receive the computer in about a month.

    Additionally I have purchased:

My goal was to upgrade RAM to 32 GB and have at minimum 1 TB SSD space.

The laptop comes with a secondary slot for an additional SSD, so I am not having to replace the included SSD. I will be replacing the included RAM.

I've referenced several DIY upgrade videos on YouTube such as this one in preparation. Much of this is very foreign to me, so I have three questions regarding how I will proceed further:

    1. After replacing the RAM, I will have unused 2x 4GB RAM that I will have no use for. Would I be able to sell these somewhere, and if so, what would be a fair price? I am not familiar with what brand/type of RAM they are beyond what's listed on the Dell Website (link above).
    2. I have purchased a Thermal Pad kit because they were recommended by most vloggers, but they've used only one or two. I would like to use all 4, so which locations could I attach them to other than on top of the new SSD? Can I attach one on top of the existing SSD? I would appreciate it if someone could pin-point the exact locations for me on the image below - as I am very unfamiliar with most things and their names here.
    3. Does it make a difference if I perform the upgrades before booting up the computer for the first time? This is in reference to set-up and hardware detection issues.

I will appreciate any insight on the matter. Thank you for your time.

Dedicated GPU working only on an external display

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 11:24 AM PST

A few days ago I bought a Lenovo Legion 5 (the Ryzen 7 4800H RTX2060 version) and I noticed right away that the laptop uses the integrated AMD graphics instead of the Nvidia one. Is there any way I could fix this? I'd rather keep the 'preferred graphics processor' option in NVIDIA Control Panel on Auto-select since I don't always need to use the dedicated card.

I also noticed that when I try to play CS:GO on a 2k external display and everything at the highest settings I get about ~250 fps but if I turn everything down and set the resolution to HD it surprisingly drops to about 150 fps.

I just bought a new laptop today (HP Envy 15, i7, rtx 2060 max q) for school and goddamn, the fan is loud as hell. I usually wouldnt mind but since its for school it would be distracting to me and my classmates so this is a really huge problem.

Ive tried disabling "fan always on" and putting the laptop into silence mode, nothing worked. especially when its plugged in it sounds like a fucking jet engine starting. Any help is appreciated!

    RAM Upgrades

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 10:53 AM PST

I have an HP 15-dw1083wm and I want to upgrade the RAM considering I only have 4 GB right now. Is it safe to replace both sticks at the same time? I'm planning on buying two 8 GB sticks and completely replacing the one stick of 4GB, and I was wondering if there's anything important I should do first.

Buying new laptop. What should I get?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 06:46 AM PST

    Hey all,

I'm due to buy a new laptop, recently been using an HP Spectre x360 2016 model. I really love this computer so far, but it's one my sister loaned me so I have to get my own.

    I have a budget of $1,400 (give or take a few $100)

I'm currently in graduate school (Pharmacy Doctorate) and I want a computer that will last me, can keep up with my workload and is portable, not bulky and looks sleek.

What recommendations do you guys have?

Why are Lenovo’s serial numbers so short?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 10:17 AM PST

Lenovo's serial numbers are very short compare to other laptop brands specially when we compare it to acer i was wondering if anyone has any information regarding how serial numbers can be made so short. For example lenovo has 8 digit serials (S4R9XXXX) for laptops, aio and desktop whereas acer dumps the whole model plus some numbers (NXHZRALXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX)
